EAST BELFAST GROUPS SHARE GRANTS BOOST A unique form of therapy using scuba diving is giving people with learning disabilities in east Belfast a boost to their confidence and mental health, thanks to a grant from Big Lottery Fund. CQUA-PSYCHOTHERAPY has received a £9,156 grant from Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme. It is part of a Big Lottery Fund grants roll out today of £761,601 to 86 groups across Northern Ireland. (See separate attachment for a full list of awards) including three groups in the East Belfast area sharing in a total of £28,801 from Awards for All. Acqua-Psychotherapy in east Belfast delivers a unique therapeutic experience to people with learning or physical disabilities using diving. The £9,156 grant is being used to provide aqua therapy sessions for adults with learning difficulties from across Belfast. Christina Cushnahan, psychological coordinator from Acqua-Psychotherapy, said: “Water therapy would be a commonly used tool but using scuba diving is something new that our

organisation is bringing to Northern Ireland. “We are working with small groups of people with learning disabilities who attend day centres across Belfast. The experience of being in the water regularly and doing something so different that they wouldn’t normally get to is do is exciting for them. I want to spark something inside them that’ll make them feel good and proud of themselves. With the funding we are able to run weekly sessions at the pool and we see improvements every week for the members of the group. I’m in the water with them and talk to them during the activity about how they are feeling. I can see their communication and social skills improving as well. It’s also very relaxing and calming for them. Diving can be seen as a difficult task for anyone and an activity that most
people have never tried before, so when they try it and are able to do it, they feel proud of themselves — that they have accomplished something — and their confidence grows and grows. This confidence stays with them when they leave the pool and helps them take on other challenges in their lives.” Elmgrove Primary School in east Belfast is using the £9,700 grant it received to deliver Barnardo’s training courses. The training will provide parents with information to support their child’s learning and a programme for parents whose children are starting school. The project will be delivered to parents from Elmgrove Primary, Euston Street Primary, Dundela Infants and Sandbrook. The Beth Johnson Foundation – Linking Generations Northern Ireland brings together different generations to build communities for all ages. The £9,945
grant is being used to bring older and younger people together in east Belfast to do activities. The project is linking Kirk House care home and supported housing complex with young people from Gilnahirk Primary School, Our Lady and St Patrick’s College and Scouting and Guides NI. Joanne McDowell, Big Lottery Fund NI Director, said: “The Big Lottery Fund’s NI Awards for All programme funds health, education, environment and community projects that help people bring about positive change in their lives, improve health and well-being, develop skills and create safer communities. The application process is simple and accessible and shall remain so, making it easy for applicants to successfully apply for small pots of funding that can have such a big impact on local communities and lives.”

PERFECTING PANCAKE PRODUCTION
ALLIED BAKERIES UNVEIL £1M+ INVESTMENT IN EAST BELFAST FACTORY Allied Bakeries, makers of some of Northern Ireland’s most popular* baked goods, today unveiled a complete overhaul of its Sunblest pancake production technology to service its growing operations at the East Belfast bakery site.
AS PART of its commitment to Northern Ireland, the bakery has invested more than £1m extending and modernising the entire pancake plant, including the purchase of robotic packing equipment, for its popular Sunblest brand. The industry-leading packing equipment is one of the most advanced in Ireland and was unveiled to Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Jonathan Bell MLA when he visited the East Belfast bakery. Peter Henry, General Manager of Allied Bakeries Ireland, said: “The shopping habits of our customers have changed, and as a result the demand for our pancakes has significantly increased since last year. We invested in cutting edge equipment to produce our best-selling* pancakes which consumers are increasingly finding more compelling. It also enables us to keep shelves continuously stocked for all major Northern Ireland food retailers that

A Bike For Life The recycle project; a social economy project of East Belfast Mission has recently been working in partnership with the H.E.A.R.T. Project on their first ever Bike for Life course. THE TARGET audience was
a group of older ladies who are generally active but had little or no experience of cycling. There were 12 participants and The H.E.A.R.T. Project used the premises at Corpus Christi College; the college also loaned them bikes and helmets. Unfortunately for some of the ladies, the bike saddles were too high, even at the lowest setting and the crossbars were an added issue and even the Belfast Bikes were not appropriate. Leader Ann Pendleton told us, “The ladies needed to feel safe and confident so we had to try to source some smaller bikes”. So, a last minute call to the recycle project in Hillview Retail Park Crumlin Road seemed to do the trick and both leaders, Ann Pendleton and Siobhan Skates were delighted to find that Michael Lowry, Bicycle Workshop Manager was very keen to
we supply.” Speaking about the announcement, Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Jonathan Bell said: “Since opening here over - 60 years ago, Allied Bakeries has produced some of our favourite home-grown bakery products such as Sunblest pancakes. It has gone on to become the largest plant bakery in Northern Ireland, servicing not only this region but also the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. This announcement is good news for retailers and it demonstrates Allied Bakeries’ commitment to the high quality produce that our country has become famous for. “I have been impressed by the stateof-the-art equipment I have seen here today. Allied Bakeries is a vital employer in East Belfast, employing more than 330 staff from the local community, and its continued success is testament to the hard work and dedication of all the com-
pany’s employees. I am delighted to undertake the official unveiling of the brand new Sunblest production technology.” As well as overhauling the Sunblest pancake equipment which enables the bakery to produce over 2.5 million pancakes per week, Allied Bakeries has modernised and upgraded elements of the entire bakery and has also made a significant investment in training leading to the continued development of a multi-skilled workforce. Peter Henry added: “The investment we have made has led to increased output, improved ergonomics and health and safety for our staff. We currently work with all major retailers in Northern Ireland (servicing them via almost 1,000 deliveries daily) and also those in the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. As a result of this investment I hope we can increase our customer base, especially beyond these borders.”

“EBM is always keen to work with other organisations to help where we can and this is a fabulous project promoting health and wellbeing and also encouraging confidence building and social interaction.” assist their plight. Leader Siobhan Skates said, “Because they could sit on the bikes more comfortably and they were able to place both feet on the ground, they had in instant boost of confidence and some went from no cycling to instant cycling which was special to see”. They facilitated their sessions with the mantra being “Safety, Comfort and Fun”. Aspects they covered included safe and comfortable clothing; fitting of helmets; carrying out an M-check; safe braking; balance riding; slow riding; figure 8’s and circles. Ann further commented, “We had a few ‘soft falls’, but nothing only pride was dented. We progressed outdoors after the initial session in Corpus Christi Hall and enjoyed a lovely cycle around Musgrave Park while soaking up the fresh air and buds of spring”. The project has successfully applied
for the preliminary stage of the Active Belfast Grant Scheme with their proposal of the ‘Wheely Inclusive Cycling Project’ and it is their intention to re-gather the group in mid-June, and also encourage more ladies to join them. Aside from the ladies, they have a number of other interested cyclists of differing ages and ability – both men and women – ready to kick off in June. Cathy Megahey, PR Officer at East Belfast Mission said, “EBM is always keen to work with other organisations to help where we can and this is a fabulous project promoting health and wellbeing and also encouraging confidence building and social interaction. Bikes from the project are sold through most of our Restore shops, at a fraction of the cost for a new bike. They are of great quality and are given 30+ safety checks and necessary repairs prior to going into the shops”.
CANCER FOCUS Northern Ireland is urging people to have a
clear out over the coming weeks – and at the same time help raise vital funds for local cancer patients and their families. Your local Cancer Focus NI charity shop will welcome your donations of quality clothing, accessories, books, CDs/DVDs, toys and knickknacks with open arms. Angela McGrath, Cancer Focus NI Retail Development Manager, said: “I love the changing seasons – it gives you an excuse to have a good old weed out and get rid of the things you haven’t looked at in ages. Instead of leaving your unwanted bits and pieces gathering dust, the customers in our charity shop would be delighted to give them a new home. Our shop is really popular with thrifty shoppers and stylish people who love a vintage look, so we need to continually re-stock our shelves with desirable bargains. We offer a full range of goods at a fraction of their original price but we need continued support from the local community to make donations to help meet the high demand. So when you’re spring cleaning please think of us. Your donations will contribute to cancer services and help local people who have been affected by the disease,” she said. “If you have never been to our charity shop, drop in today and you’ll discover a high street gem. Whether you’re looking for vintage chic, retro trends, smart tailoring or a special gift – they have everything you need for your must-have collection.” All the money raised by Cancer Focus NI stays in Northern Ireland and provides a wide range of services including counselling and family support, bra and swimwear fitting for mastectomy patients, art therapy, Beauty for Life and stop smoking sessions. 2015 Overal Spirit of NI Winner Jay Beatty with Guest Judge Louis Walsh.
THE SEARCH IS ON
SEARCHING FOR BELFAST’S
Unsung Heroes The 2016 Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards with Specsavers has just been launched and now judges want to hear who you think deserves to be crowned the Spirit of Northern Ireland in 2016. THIS ANNUAL awards ceremony, which will again be televised by UTV, seeks to honour all those who make a real difference everyday across Northern Ireland. Last year’s overall Spirit of Northern Ireland winner was Lurgan lad Jay Beatty who stole both fans and players hearts when he won the Scottish Premiership goal of the month award. Celtic-mad Jay who has Downs Syndrome was presented with the Overall Spirit of Northern Ireland award by former X-Factor judge Louis Walsh, for his work in raising awareness of the condition. Back in February 2015, Jay received
97 percent of the votes for his spectacular half-time shot, which hit the back of the net during Celtic’s victory against Hamilton in the Scottish Premiership ‘Goal of the Month’ award. This year, organisers have introduced a range of new categories to help ensure that all of the remarkable and inspirational people living in local communities get the acknowledgement they deserve for the selfless contribution they make to life in Northern Ireland. Judges are searching to honour winners across ten categories in total which are now open for nomination.
“The Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards encapsulate all that is good about this fantastic part of the world and for us it’s important to recognise truly exceptional individuals and give them an evening they will always remember.” This year’s categories are: Unsung Hero, Overcoming Adversity, Spirit of Youth, 999 Hero, Charity Champion, Spirit of Health, Spirit of Education, Caring Spirit Award, Spirit of Sport and Overall Spirit of Northern Ireland Award. The unique Northern Irelandwide search will give recognition to those whose good deeds have previously gone mostly unnoticed - ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things to help others and people whose uplifting stories of selfless acts will touch the hearts of all who read them. Whether for demonstrating a spirit of compassion, neighbourliness, charity, enterprise, courage or devotion, all nominations are welcome. All those who submit nominations will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 eye-care voucher and a VIP experience at the awards, including an overnight stay at the Culloden Estate & Spa, courtesy of Specsavers. The Spirit of Northern Ireland
launched a new Disability App, available free on Android and iOS, to provide quick, basic information for youth leaders on 25 different disabilities that affect children and young people. The App provides accessible, valuable information and guidance for youth leaders enabling them to effectively include boys who may display a disability or a particular special need. The App can be downloaded free by anyone working with young people. To find the App, go to the app store and search for BBNI or DISaBility. The Information is also available to download in leaflet form on the BBNI website www.bbni.org.uk

You can find out more about fostering at www.adoptionandfostering.hscni.net. on Thursday 14 April at 7pm in East Belfast Network Centre. EBCDA has been working with youth workers, young people and Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People to develop a “young people’s agenda” for East Belfast, inspired by Belfast City Council’s “Belfast Conversation.” Contact Jonny Currie, Community Development Director, at jonny@ebcda.org or call 9045 1512 for more information.
Awards with Specsavers will culminate with a glitzy grand final taking place on Friday, May 27 at the luxurious five-star Culloden Estate & Spa resort in Holywood. Each year, local celebrities flock to this event, eager to hear and support the remarkable achievements of the finalists. Last year, the audience was filled with a host of household names including stars of Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Holby City, Game of Thrones and Northern Ireland’s very own gripping drama The Fall, who all mingled with the nominees and stopped for the obligatory selfie. Specsavers Northern Ireland Chairman Brian O’Kane said: ‘We very proud to once again be sponsors of the wonderful Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards. We have been involved with this fantastic event since 2011 and are already looking forward to celebrating Northern Ireland’s unsung heroes. Each year, we are totally blown away and moved by the stories of courage, kindness and selflessness
that emerge from these awards. The Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards encapsulate all that is good about this fantastic part of the world and for us it’s important to recognise truly exceptional individuals and give them an evening they will always remember.”
To make a nomination, simply explain in 50-100 words why this person is worthy of a Spirit of Northern Ireland Award and email to spiritofniawards@ sundaylife.co.uk or fill in a form available at a local Specsavers store. The closing date for nominations is Friday April 22. Tickets for the gala awards ceremony cost £60 which includes dinner, table wine and entertainment and can be purchased from JPR, Sylvan House, 232-240, Belmont Office Park, Belfast, BT4 2AW; by phone at 028 9076 0066 or e-mailing: mail@jprni.com

participate in the production and performance of a bespoke music video, with the aim of inspiring and motivating through the medium of film and moving image. Joan Burney Keatings, Cinemagic Chief Executive said: “The evening celebrated the breadth of creative talent that exists among our young people here in Northern Ireland, which simply needs to be unlocked. We wanted to work with new groups across Belfast and further afield to help introduce them to the unique opportunities at Cinemagic, through a host of tailored programmes that brought different cultural backgrounds together to work on a common goal. In doing so we have helped young people develop personal skills such as teamwork, confidence and communications as well as contributing to young people’s understanding and acceptance of cultural diversity” Junior Minister Emma Pengelly said: “Cinemagic provide young people with exciting opportunities in the creative arts. By taking
part in filmmaking process they are encouraged to build working relationships and friendships with people from different communities and backgrounds. I am delighted that OFMDFM have provided support to this project through our Together: Building a United Community strategy. The showcase clearly demonstrates that we are helping build a united community in Northern Ireland where we all can all live, learn, work and socialise together free from prejudice, hate and intolerance. Junior Minister Jennifer McCann said: “By tapping into young people’s creativity Cinemagic are helping them reach their full potential. By engaging in various different creative mediums the young people have grown in skills, capabilities and confidence. At the same time, the shared experience has increased their understanding of each other. They have built friendships which may not have naturally developed due barriers of background, clearly illustrating the importance of such projects.”

Cucou’s official relaunch party was a huge success. The venue was the Cucou Property offices on the Belmont Road shared with GMC Mortgages (all under one roof, so that’s handy). The theme was Birds, Eggs, Nests, Balloons, Property,Estate Agents and Mortgages! And Champagne! Many thanks to all the clients, customers, traders and agents who attended. A special thanks to High Sheriff of Belfast, Alderman Jim Rodgers OBE who officiated at the launch.

TWO AGENTS
Cucou Property Consultants is different in that the company is an estate agent and consultancy who work with local agents, not against. Marketing Manager Jill Spence quoted “We work with local agents and all our sales listings are also placed with one of a number of “partner” agents we feel is best capable of achieving a successful sale with us. You get two agents for the price of one!” Cucou removes the need to wonder which agent to use, or getting 3 or 4 round to give valuations. They will provide a valuation free of charge, and fully explain all costs and benefits including service standards, contract types and marketing fees on behalf of their partner agents. Cucou also “nests” with GMC Mortgages, so everything you need is under one roof.
DIFFERENT
A bit like the bird, Cucou places its egg (your property) in another agents nest, in order to ensure success! And as they work with lots of agents, there are no geographical limits! Very different! If you are buying, Cucou have a wide network of partner estate agents hence a larger protfolio of properties at their fingertips. The team can also help you search for exactly what you want in your desired location and then organise your mortgage through GMC. Cucou also provides a letting and management service. If you would like to hear more about what Cucou can offer you visit their website on www.cucou.co.uk or give them a call on 028 9065 5999

a number of learning and speech difficulties and was getting a lot of support through school, speech therapy, occupational therapy etc. Ryan, like most children with speech and learning difficulties had a lot of temper tantrums, sleeping issues, difficulty interacting with other children and as parents we always had to be careful when taking Ryan out to cafes, shopping etc as he would get upset very easily over the slightest thing. I hate to say it now but it was safer to not take him out most of the time. It’s hard now to recount all the problems but he did have quite a few difficulties. When Ryan started the programme we started to see changes with him within a few weeks. His personality really started to change and he became less frustrated with things in general, less temper tantrums and he started to be able to communicate with us better but also with others outside his family circle. After a few months on the programme we witnessed him have an actual conversation
with an adult for the first time ever, where both Ryan and the adult knew what each other was talking about! This was a major milestone for Ryan as he always became hugely frustrated when people didn’t understand him. We also had glowing reports from his school, speech therapists and occupational therapists who have also seen great improvements in Ryan all round. Ryan’s concentration greatly improved which really benefited him in school. I really think the programme helped with this as it was clear how as soon as he started to focus better on the exercises this correlated with his improved focus in school work. Socially now Ryan is great and we can do so much more with him and without any nervousness. His sleep patterns are absolutely normal and tantrums are pretty much non-existent. Ryan still does present with some delayed learning issues but he has made so much progress in all areas whilst on the programme. We had great delight to hear from his teacher last month that
Ryan’s reading had advanced by a full year between June and September this year. He had no additional therapy over the summer other than the programme and some reading at home. Again Ryan’s confidence and his overall personality has completely changed in the last 18months and we are so thankful for all the support from Susan and the learning breakthrough programme. Susan has been fantastic at giving us additional support, words of advice and suggesting other exercises that help Ryan with his concentration and helping with his co-ordination. Ryan’s occupational therapist also shadowed Susan for a time and then started employing a number of the exercises from the programme into Ryan’s OT sessions. I think this is absolute testimony that the programme works. There’s probably lots of other really obvious changes in Ryan that I’ve missed, I would recommend the programme to anyone who has children with similar issues.

with over 100 entries across the 16 categories, far exceeding our expectations, this is testament to the City’s business sector. On behalf of the Council I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each of our finalists, and of course this year’s worthy winners. Every year it is clear to see that new standards of business excellence and innovation are being achieved, and this event is the perfect platform to give much deserved recognition. I was particularly pleased to see the high number of new start-up businesses enter the new business category this year, which I will take as a sign that the new council area is offering a great environment and location for a new business to flourish. Now is the time to invest in Lisburn & Castlereagh City, Northern Ireland’s best connected, business friendly City, with an entrepreneurial and outward looking Council commit-
ted to business growth. Amongst those honoured were Business Person of the Year, Paula Jennings of Stepping Stones NI, who also took the Best Social Enterprise Business award, and Trailblazer BBQ Ltd, who received the Best New Business accolade. Prof Lester Manley, Founder and MD of Trailblazer BBQ Ltd, the world’s first fully functional, towable BBQs, said: “We are blown away and feel incredibly lucky to have won this award after a couple of years of hard work. Our strapline at the moment is ‘now you can’ and now we have!” The sold out black-tie ceremony, which was hosted by Q Radio favourite Stephen Clements, also featured a sensational after dinner performance by Strictly Come Dancing professional dance duo James and Ola Jordan.

compered by the actor & journalist Ivan Little, saw the shortlisted entries showcased by rehearsed readings and accompanied by live illustrations by the acclaimed local artist Patrick Sanders. Belfast Community Gospel Choir provided musical delights. Launched in association with the National Trust, Young at Art and Arts & Business Northern Ireland, this Belfast-based competition was open to writers of all age groups, with or without writing experience. Entrants were asked to submit a short story or poem, no longer than 1,000 words, in a style of their choosing – with one proviso; that they used Belmont Tower as their muse. Formerly a primary school, Belmont Tower is over 100 years old and has
belonged to the National Trust since 2013. The purpose of the competition was to promote local community engagement and to raise awareness of Belmont Tower as a historic landmark and creative hub in the East Belfast area. The final winners were selected by award-winning novelist and journalist Linda Grant, who was impressed by the high standard of entries. The winner in the children’s category was Mick McGuiness (Campbell Junior School) with his imaginative piece entitled “Belmont Tower Terror”; which tells the story of the mystery disappearance of Miss Cartright, a former teacher of Belmont Tower and her pupils. The winner in the adults category was Peter Keilty with his inspiring
monologue on the evolution of Belmont Tower against a backdrop of key moments in history. The winning entries will be reproduced on National Trust postcards illustrated by Patrick Sanders. Shortlisted entrants in the adults category included Anne Irvine with “Connections” and Karina Moore with “Belmont Beauty”. Shortlisted entrants in the children category included Arthur McNeice (St. Joseph’s Primary School) with “Escape from Belmont Tower” and Mia Gribben (Elmgrove Primary School) with her CS Lewis dialogue. Recognition was also given to Julie-May Noteman for her play “That Rings a Bell”. Thank you to all those who took part and contributed to making Towering Tales a resounding success!

LEVEL GROUND
ENJOY LOVELY FOOD & GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE A FUTURE The incredible East Belfast enterprise making a huge impact on young people and catching the eye of world renowned celebrity chefs in the process!
EVEL GROUND Coffee Shop is a non-profit making enterprise launched in September last year and located in Dundonald Elim Church. Situated on the East link Road Dundonald, the modern cafe boasts state of the art interior design, large widescreen TV and provides a warm friendly environment for a satisfying meal, lunchtime snack or just a quick cuppa and a catch up. The coffee shop is fully accessible, child and baby friendly and caters for all ages. We believe that all individuals have the right to experience life to its fullest potential and to be treated with the consideration, respect and full recognition of his/her dignity and individuality. We provide a safe, loving and fully accepting environment where young people with learning difficulties are taught all aspects of the hospitality industry. Until Level Ground opened, there was no local provision for young people with learning difficulties to access work experience and training for employment in the hospitality sector. We have formed and developed strong relationships with Torbank, Longstone and Killard Schools. We began with 3 full time students and now have 3 part time students and 3 on day placement with us. Each student has an individual programme tailored to their ability and aims for their future. They have all achieved their Level 1 Food
L
Hygiene, Basic First Aid and Life Skills certificates. Our chef can award up to Level 2 Catering. In addition to training in hospitality our students have ‘classroom days’ where we, in conjunction with other agencies, aim to improve the long-term employability and increase self esteem and confidence so that they can develop skills and achieve qualification that will enable them to move into further training or employment. As a result of the project, we have already seen huge development with our team becoming more ambitious with experience and as their ability and confidence increases it is a joy to watch. Such is the notoriety of Level Ground, we recently hosted celebrity chef Marc Pierre White who paid a surprise visit to the coffee shop in March. Employees provided him with a cuppa and home made muffin before taking him on a guided tour. Marco was incredibly enthusiastic about the enterprise and urged the people of Belfast to make it their duty to visit. We have excellent parking facilities and are close to local schools, the Ulster Hospital and local entertainment. We would be delighted to welcome you and are confident you’ll find Level Ground a vibrant place to visit.

IN JUNE 2015 I was knocked of my bicycle by a tractor. I
sustained severe injuries throughout my whole body including fractured femurs one of which was fractured in 6 places. I also sustained fractures to my right foot and ankle. I spent 17 weeks in hospital after which I attended for regular intense physiotherapy. As well as physiotherapy I was also regularly taking strong painkillers. My mobility was greatly reduced as it was painful to walk and I had to use crutches to support myself when walking. My Physiotherapist told me about the Foot and Ankle Clinic in Glengormely which had developed a rocker insole which was specially designed for people with painful or injured ankles. I made an appointment and went along to see if they could help. The Podiatrist David Hallowell examined me and gave me the background to how the rocker had been developed. He also let me try a sample device which immediately reduced my pain and allowed me to walk more easily. He took casts of my feet and about two weeks later my rocker was issued. The difference has been amazing! The first thing was the pain was greatly reduced, for the first time since my accident I could a walk without crutches. My mobility has been greatly improved and this has gone a long way towards giving me back some quality of life. I told David that out of a score of ten I’d give the rocker eleven.

DECLAN SWOPS HIS CRUTCHES FOR A ROCKER
“
My mobility has been greatly improved and this has gone a long way towards giving me back some quality of life.
“
After sustaining serious injuries in a bicycle accident, Declan’s recovery needed a huge turnaround to improve his mobility. A visit to the Foot and Ankle Clinic in Glengormley took things to the next level thanks to a revolutionary rocker insole.
DAVID SAYS
“I am always delighted when a patient gets a result like this. We spend a lot of time developing these devices and it really makes all the effort worthwhile when we see patients like Tony doing so well. It’s also a testament to the Tony’s determination to regain his mobility. I’ve always found that unless the patient is motivated the whole treatment process becomes very difficult”. SJ’S BIKINI BODIES GROUP PERSONAL TRAINING AND
FITNESS STUDIO FOR WOMEN ONLY A brand new fitness studio has opened on the Castlereagh Road. We met with the two trainers behind the venture, Susan and Rachel, to get some of their extraordinary background and experience and to learn what they have in store for people who come for the classes which are open to all women of all ages, sizes and goals.
SUSAN
RACHEL
Susan has been a personal trainer for ten years and has ran her own bodybuilding gym in Saintfield for the last three. She has specialised in training women of all ages and sizes throughout her career including one lady who started at 26 stone and came own to 14 stone in 18 months and another who is 72 and works with Susan on her muscle mass and to help her arthritis, as well as prepping a girl to compete in NIFMA. After meeting her trainer & coach Ian Young at her gym in Saintfield, Susan has been a bikini competitor for the last three years and won her fist competition in 2013 follow by six shows in 2015 including NIFMA Bikini (2nd place) NIFMA Body Art (2nd place) UK BFF Bikini (3rd Place) Irish Muscle Power Bikini (3rd Place) IBFA Bikini (First Place) which then took her to the world championships in Rome where she secured a 7th place. Susan is also a brand ambassador for Eve Dee bikini designer’s brand - Anatomy of Stage. Been recently featured in Ulster Ink magazine and is also a sponsored athlete by Panacea probiotics as well as soon stocking their products. Susan aims to compete again this April in IBFA & PCA.
Rachel’s background was initially in performing arts and dance. But although she was active through this, she felt she needed to work on her diet and change her lifestyle and so started working with personal trainer Gillian Bradley who inspired her to move into weight training and circuits. Such was her passion that she went to to achieve first place in her first ever show NIFMA Transformation category followed by Irish Muscle Power and again she is set to compete in the PCA Irish Open later this month. She also came first in Jodie Marsh Miss Transformation and appeared on the website as part of a tie in with Jodie’s products.

TEAMWORK
Susan and Rachel met last year while competing at a show and have been working together ever since. When Susan opened the studio in East Belfast, she knew Rachel was perfect. She knows the ethos inside out and is very much a believer in the team spirit when working towards personal goals. So with these shared foundations of training and fitness combined with nutrition, Susan launched
SJ’s Bikini Bodies with Rachel with a view to creating a welcoming, comfortable, non judgemental and approachable space for all to come and work at their own levels with the experts. Girls come to classes and the spirit, friendship and escapism is as much of a factor as the individual goals for all involved. All ages, all sizes, all goals - from beginners to advanced - there is a class for you. The main focus is on a healthy living lifestyle change - with balance. So there is a 360 degree plan to cover all aspects and that includes nutrition guides and recipes. But that doesn’t completely rule out any treats you like in your diet. You can work around them. It’s all about building confidence and changing the way you think about fitness and food. There are morning and evening classes as well as boot camps - all built around times that suit you and where you can join together with like minded people who are ready and willing to welcome another member to the group no matter what your age, size or shape.

people in East Belfast, and to make a commentary on the use of public space. During the workshops participants will help create individual Wish Trees, the trees will then be combined with pieces made by other groups to make a forest installation that will be showcased in Connswater Shopping Centre. The artists are using forests and trees as subject matter to represent the importance of our individual ‘roots’ and the intertwining branches of family trees. The tree also has a nurturing value as an object of shelter, and as a source of fuel and building material. The artists are currently looking to work with a range of groups that are based in east Belfast, especially those that are aimed at younger adults, older people, women’s groups and groups that represent our migrant population. If this is something you would be interested in getting your local group involved in or would simply like some more information please
Wish Tree Project
THE WISH TREES is a community inspired project addressing issues of belonging, change and personal aspirations for the east of the city. Deirdre and Lesley are planning to work with local people to make a vibrant sculptural forest installation that will be publicly showcased this summer. Through a series of workshops and collaborations with community groups this forest of ‘Wish Trees’ will reflect the personal dreams and hopes of the workshop participants for east Belfast. The regeneration of many parts of east Belfast is providing much needed open spaces that while aesthetically pleasing to the eye also promote social interaction. But as well as realising city planners utopian vision; public space should also reflect a communities local character and personality. So the aim of the project is to use visual art as a mechanism to provide a safe platform for discussion and awareness around social issues relevant to
Wish Everyone Was Happy
Creative Exchange artists Lesley Cherry and Deirdre Robb are currently working towards a thought provoking art project called The Wish Trees. The project will take place this summer and aims to celebrate the aspirations of our community and support local regeneration of East Belfast.
contact Deirdre Morrissey at creativeexchangeartists@gmail.com. The Wish Trees is part of Creative Exchange Artist Studios 20th anniversary events. Active since 1996, Creative Exchange has been providing artists workspace and community engaged projects in east Belfast for 20 years. During March this year both Lesley and Deirdre were invited to speak and show their work at The Women’s Work Festival by Festival Director, Charlotte Dryden, to coincide with International Women’s Day. The festival initially addressed the role of women within the music industry but working alongside Paul Kane from
The Over the Hill Music Collective, they decided to widen the remit of women in the arts by inviting visual artists to take part. The event consisted of a panel discussion addressing the role of women within the arts and the under representation of them within these realms. The panel consisted of Professor Ros Jennings from Gloucestershire University, Lisa Flavelle from Belfast 89FM, musician Liz Kelly, as well as video work from Cherry and Robb’s ‘Pausal’ Installation. The festival ran from the 4th to the 11th of March and featured veteran DJ Annie Nightingale, Music Journalist Jessica Hopper amongst others.

Chris Ledger, Chief Executive, Arts and Disability Forum, commented; “Disabled and deaf people can have fruitful and successful careers in the arts and the grant scheme recognises this and supports artists to develop work of extremely high artistic merit. The scheme is open to artists in all artforms and with all types of disability including unseen conditions such as diabetes, dyslexia, epilepsy and mental health conditions.” Fionnuala Walsh, Head of Participatory Arts, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, added: “Congratulations to all fourteen artists. These grants are given in recognition of the artists’ work to date and to provide them with the necessary support to take their careers to the next level. CYCLISTS
If getting on your bicycle in the better weather is your plan then maybe you need to consider the best eye correction for that. Prescription cycling specs which wrap around are available and come with interchangeable filters for different light conditions. Even mountain biking goggles can be supplied with prescription.
SWIMMERS
Perhaps you are looking forward to a dip in the pool and so prescription swimming goggles might be useful for you. They are now very affordable and look just like ordinary goggles. I know several patients who find them invaluable. Snorkelling and diving masks with prescription are also available.
GARDENERS
SUMMER IS IN SIGHT
Once Easter is over and the clocks change our thoughts begin to turn towards summer holidays and the activities we hope to be enjoying in the longer summer evenings.
Don’t forget to protect your eyes especially when cutting and strimming grass. Safety glasses to wear either on their own or over the top of your glasses are on offer.
EVERYONE
We all need sunglasses, every person, young and old, to protect our eyes in the sunshine. If you
don’t wear glasses then still make sure that you look out for sunglasses carrying the “CE” Mark and British Standard BS EN ISO 12312-1:2013.
DO I NEED SURGERY?
A wide range of prescriptions including varifocal lenses can be put into many fashionable, on trend, sunglasses frames. Maybe you have not yet tried prescription sunglasses, or perhaps the ones you have need modernising and updating. (Be aware that scratched lenses no longer offer full sun protection.) Is there someone you need to tell about prescription sunglasses who you have seen perching a pair of sunglasses on top of their normal glasses? Just ask your optician about any of these products to get the best advice for your eyes this summer. HAIR COLOUR TRENDS
OPAL RAINBOW COLOUR BLOCK
SPRING / SUMMER 2016
Spring summer trends are bringing in styles that are experimental, edgy, and fashionable, normally people look to celebrities and imitate their hairstyles, but now thanks to other sources like the internet, people are influenced by Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook. People are being more adventurous and having more fun with their hair.
Red hair is a big trend this season, through different variations of it as seen on the runways from bright orange , Fiery to cartoonish reds whether its bright or bold red these tones work better on medium to light skin complexions. Ronze is another red tone hitting the spotlight, it’s
Babylights will be big this season suited to those looking for a more natural tones, it’s a colour technique which consists of very fine highlights or lowlights throughout the hair, creating
RED HEADS
made up of a mixture of copper, red and browntones this colour works stunning on warmer skintones but can suit all complexions. Rihanna have been seen with Ronze hair while Nicola Roberts opts for bright orange look and Florence and the machine supports a cartoon like red.
BABYLIGHTS
You can create this look with different levels of intensity. These looks have been trending on the internet and has exploded on to the scene. These colours are stunning placed through the fringe or as a dip dye on the hair to create a statement look as seen more recently on

Gwen Stefani. These tones are designed for pre lightened hair, the hair needs to be a pale blonde for the colour to work best. I would recommend that it be done by a professional colourist they can advise you on how to achieve these different looks.
PLATINUM BLONDE We have seen this trend slowly progressing last year, now it might just be the new hair obsession this season. You can have it retro glamour like gwen stefani or more edgy like rita ora 80’s dark roots look. Platinum blonde hair suits some complexions
a multi-dimensional look within the hair fashioning a natural look. Jessica alba, allision williams and roasamund pike show off different interpertations of babylights.

and eye colour more than others as long as it’s the right shade that suits their skin tone. Fair skin people can wear mainly any blonde from icy tones to pastels shades, while platinum hair on darker skin looks chic and stylish. This looks work great shorter hair styles (shoulders length and above) as well as darker brows as it adds more definition to your features and creates a fashionable contrast with your blonde hair.
DENIM
Blue black hair has a new twist to it, on trend are variable tones such as steel blue, purple, grey tones through the hair which creates a dusty distressed look , this look is

very versatile and you can wear it as a pastel shade or intensive tone to cater to your style goals. It works perfectly through dark hair as an ombre effect or as statement pieces through the hair. This look is upcoming from denim resurfacing on the catwalks and it has filtered through to the hair, this has to be one of my favourites look for this season and as an added bonus denim goes with everything!

SUSANNA DEMONSTRATING HER EXTRAORDINARY MUSICAL TALENT
GIFTED EAST BELFAST MUSICIAN REACHES THE FINAL OF BANK OF IRELAND UK’S CATHERINE JUDGE MEMORIAL AWARD Susanna Griffin from Belfast has been shortlisted to play in the national final of Bank of Ireland UK’s Catherine Judge Memorial Award.
Pupils from Campbell College Belfast took part in an I.T workshop as part of the Bring IT On programme delivered by IT3Sixty in conjunction with the Department for Employment and Learning and Belfast Metropolitan College.
SUSANNA GRIFFIN, a pupil from Strathearn School, Belfast has been shortlisted to play in the national final of Bank of Ireland UK’s Catherine Judge Memorial Award in the Great Hall, Queens University, Belfast, on Saturday 16th April. Now in its tenth year, the Award, which is part of the bank’s wider schools programme, aims to support a new generation of musical talent and is presented annually to an exceptional solo classical musician who wishes to pursue third-level music education. Pictured is Garth Farmer, Castlereagh Bank of Ireland UK branch manager, finalist Susanna Griffin and Heather McIvor, Music teacher at Strathearn School.
The multi-faceted initiative includes direct outreach into schools, with more than 5000 students in 150 schools hearing a tech careers presentation or taking part in an employability workshop. Nearly three quarters of those who attend the careers presentation say they are more likely to take up a career in IT as a result. Indeed applications for computing-related degrees in Northern Ireland have increased by more than 90% over the last seven years, demonstrating the impact of programmes such as Bring IT On. To build on its success and reach a younger audience, Bring IT On has now been joined by Junior Bring IT On, designed for 8 – 12 year olds. On the website, would-be tech wizards can practise being cyber detectives in an online game; take their first steps in web design; and learn about the world of tech though quizzes and competitions. At the same time a programme of Cyber Security Workshops has been going out to junior schools: more than 500 10 – 11 year olds have found out about staying safe online, beating cyber-bullying, and a day in the life of a cyber-professional.For more information on Bring IT On events and activities to inspire young people about the digital industry go to www.juniorbio.com or email enda@it3sixty.com
“THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED REPLACE OUR STOLEN IPADS!” A happy ending to what was a terrible story in the last few months. As we reported, a break in at Cregagh Primary School in February resulted in the theft of 3 iPads and 3 laptops. The community rallied round instantly and a fund raising initiative kicked in to help the pupils replace the items. And as you can see from the smiles above, the initiative was a success! The local community engaged with this story, organising collections, fund raising events and getting the story to local media. So the pupils can now get back to enjoying their school day with all the technology they need at their fingertips. From the school and the pupils, thanks to all who helped make this possible.
GGS Ulster Youth Choir Selection Congratulations to ten of Grosvenor’s Grammar Schools top choristers who have been selected onto either the Ulster Youth Choir or Ulster Youth Training Choir following a workshop conducted within the school on Thursday 10th March. The auditions took place within the GGS Music department when Alan Leech, a professional singer and vocal tutor with the Ulster Youth Choir, showcased a choral workshop with Grosvenor’s elite Chamber Choir. All of the pupils involved thoroughly enjoyed the experience and benefited greatly from Mr Leech’s technical training and relaxed, humorous approach. Following the workshop and upon consideration by Mr Leech of those who auditioned, a number of pupils have now been offered a place to attend a summer residential course with the Ulster Youth Training Choir, namely: Sarah Myles, Libby Duncan,
Connswater Opticians Helps Children Be Seen On Our Roads The Connswater Specsavers team has donated 120 high visibility vests to help young children in East Belfast be seen better on our roads.

The giveaway marked Specsavers’ sponsorship of Road Safety Week and aimed to highlight the importance of being visible to motorists and to keep young people safe. Greenwood Primary School, Victoria Park Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School and Orangefield Primary School each received a set of 30 vests for use by their pupils. Specsavers store director, Paula Cunningham, says, “To be safe as a road user and as a pedestrian you have to be seen and this applies especially to children as they make their way to and from school. It is particularly important that all pedestrians take precautions and wear high visibility clothing when out and about in the dark. Our optical assistant Stacey Wallace was delighted to visit each of the schools to deliver the vests and we hope they will be used over and over again.”
Eva Wardlow, Amy Cullen, Ruth Milligan, Amy McMillan, James Morrison and Ben Stacey. This course will take place at Campbell College Belfast from 16th – 22nd July, culminating in a concert entitled‘Earth Song’ on 22nd July. What is more two additional pupils, Stephen Hedley and Thomas Parke, have been afforded the honour of an invitation to attend a residential course with the Ulster Youth Choir from 24th - 30th July. Again taking place at
Campbell College, this course will also conclude with a concert on the final evening, this time entitled ‘As Dreams Are Made Of’. As well as the pupils themselves, however, sincerest congratulations are also extended to Grosvenor’s Head of Music Miss Rosemary Foster, without whose dedication and guidance the school’s choristers would be incapable of achieving the heights which they have attained in recent years.

How to beat the bag tax in style by Oscar & Joy PLUS upcycling tips from Jill @ ReFound
HOW TO BEAT
THE BAG TAX
One of the biggest changes in retail across the UK and Ireland has been the disposable bag tax. Oscar & Joy show how you can beat the tax in style.
THE PROBLEMS caused by disposable bags are well documented, including increased carbon emissions, problems with litter & landfill, and damage to marine life. Fortunately the bag tax – which was specifically introduced to change behaviours – has led to a 90% reduction in single use bags. This in turn has helped create a cleaner, greener environment, and encouraged all of us to think more carefully about how we use our resources. That’s great news, but at an individual level it has created a new problem. What do we do when we forget our bag? Not to mention the inconvenience of lugging around several large jute totes before we even reach the shops. Fortunately a solution is at hand with the Flip & Tumble 24/7 reusable bag. Designed in the West Coast of America, and available in 10 different colours, these compactable shopping bags exude Californian
BAG IT UP >>>>>
cool. As the name implies, the 24/7 can be used anywhere at any time. Each bag is made from ripstop nylon which is light, strong, and extremely compactable. When in use the 24/7 will hold around 16kgs. When no longer required it will fold to roughly the size of a peach, with a strong double fold to keep it firmly in place. This makes it really easy to use. Simply pop one in your handbag or pocket, and next time you make an impulse buy, or pick up some last minute groceries, the handy 24/7 will be there to help. Its convenient, environmentally friendly, and tax free. With this blend of superior function and design it is no surprise then that the trusty 24/7 has been expanded into a whole range of colourful compactable products, from cross body backs to backpacks; not to mention the popular travel pouches, produce bags and bulk food bags. Exclusively imported from California.
All the products are available at Oscar & Joy, 94 High Street, Holywood. 028 9042 5483 or online @ www.oscarandjoy.com

There is so much you can do with just about every item, the only barrier will be having the tools and skill to do some of the upcycling you might need! If you keep it basic however, there is plenty you can do very easily; Repurposing old picture frames into chalk boards or corkboards, Save old glass jars and tins to use as herb garden containers; or attach to a wood panel to hold pens and paints, Update furniture by giving it a makeover with wallpaper, paint or even fabric coverings, Get an industrial look by adding castors to a coffee table or vintage box – makes a great toy box! Stepping out of your comfort zone, you might like to try: Sink storage unit: cut a hole in the top and back of an old dresser

and plumb the sink into the top. It’s a really funky way of using old mahogany or dark wood pieces If you have a random set of chairs, you could try painting them the same colour and reupholstering the seat pads. The shapes might be different but they are held together by the colour theme – a nice quirk for your dining table. Lights are one of the easiest things to upcycle. You can create a quirky light out of just about anything. But you do need some wiring skills! Or buy the ready-to-go flex and plug. Of course, some upcycling doesn’t necessarily require any action – just use it in a different way. It’s as simple as that. You’ll never look at your waste in the same way again!

It will be the world’s most authentic Titanic-themed hotel. Titanic Foundation, with the help of a £4.9m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Heritage Enterprise programme, is supporting the restoration of the Drawing Offices. The scheme, which will include three pavilions, will be publicly accessible for tours, events and exhibitions. Both projects are due to open in 2017, creating 100 new jobs. Kerrie Sweeney, Chief Executive of Titanic Foundation, said:“The Harland & Wolff Drawing Offices are one of Northern Ireland’s most significant and important historical buildings. It is a building of global significance where over 1,000 ships were designed including Titanic, Britannic and Olympic. Today marks a key milestone in its long-awaited resto-

WORK BEGINS
ON WORLD’S MOST AUTHENTIC TITANIC HOTEL Work has begun to fully restore the former Harland & Wolff Headquarters building and Drawing Offices in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter. The iconic buildings, where RMS Titanic and 1,000 other ships were conceived and designed, will include a new boutique hotel and public heritage space.
ration. It’s almost 30-years since the Drawing Offices were used as a commercial premises, but now, thanks to the support from Heritage Lottery Fund and the partnership between ourselves and Titanic Quarter Ltd, we have the opportunity to bring them back to their former glory. This will give the public the opportunity to experience over a century of innovation and exceptional craftsmanship and allow the redevelopment of the rest of the building into a unique hotel.” Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Jonathan Bell said: “It is exciting to see that one of Belfast’s most iconic buildings where men created, designed and built thousands of ships including the Titanic will be rejuvenated and returned to its former glory. Northern Ireland’s tourism package is continually growing. Like that of Titanic Belfast which has become a ‘must see’ attraction for visitors to Belfast and Northern Ireland, I have no doubt that this project will be another great addition to our tourism offering.” The boutique hotel will be operated by the same company behind Liverpool’s hugely successful Titanic Hotel in the city’s historic Stanley
Dock area. Since opening in 2014 the hotel has won many awards, including winner of the ‘Luxury Hotel of the Year’ award at the 2016 Luxury Travel Guide Global Awards. As a listed building all redevelopment work will maintain the building’s character and appearance, and safeguard its special architectural interest. Further details of how the new hotel will look will be released later in the year. In its heyday Harland & Wolff’s headquarters accommodated 500 workers, including Thomas Andrews and Lord Pirrie who were part of the company’s famous management team. Built in three stages between 1889 and 1922 it was partially restored in 2008 by Titanic Quarter Ltd for use as its HQ building and office space. Located on Belfast’s Queen’s Road, the building is adjacent to Titanic Belfast and the slipways where Titanic was built and launched. Since it opened in 2012 Titanic Belfast has attracted over two million visitors from 124 countries and generated £105m in additional tourism spend for the Northern Ireland economy. It’s estimated that half a million visitors have come to Northern Ireland with Titanic Belfast as their primary reason.

A SPRING IN THE STEP FOR FIRST TIME BUYERS Spring is in the air and that should be a good thing for first time buyers, thats according to James Duggan Estates in East Belfast
The first quarter of 2016 saw the lower end of the housing market in East Belfast dominated by investors and buy to let landlords trying to beat the new stamp duty laws being introduced in April 2016. This in turn made it difficult for first time buyers to compete. Now that the new laws in relation to stamp duty have came into effect, we at James Duggan Estates believe that we will see a slight slowing down on the investor market which will ultimately allow a bit more freedom for first time
buyers competing in that market. So if you are a first time buyer and have found yourself a bit frustrated over the last couple of months stick with it as now is the time to buy. If you are unsure of your options, why not give our office a call on (028)90 925050 where one of our friendly and experienced staff would be more than happy to help you. We offer everything under the one roof to make your house buying process as simple and stress free as possible. Our services include

‘Shock’ at Executive’s £90,000 bill for IN graffiti REACH 42,000 HOMES EAST BELFAST EVERY MONTH AN EXPLOSION of graffiti across North Down, including Holywood, has cost the Housing Executive almost £90,000 in the past two years alone, it has emerged this week. The housing body has had to spend the five figure sum on removing graffiti from its property in the various estates it is responsible for across the borough. While much of the graffiti can be put down to common vandalism, some of it has also contained sinister threats against named individuals and to express support for or opposition to various paramilitary groups. Local DUP MLA Alex Easton MLA has expressed his ‘shock’ at the mounting cost of the graffiti, which emerged in response to a question he put to Department of Social Development Minister, Mervyn Storey, at Stormont. It was revealed that during the financial year 2012 to 2013 the Executive spent £43,267.15 on graffiti removal around the borough and during the year 2013 to 2014 this rose to £45,080.23. Mr Easton said he was ‘deeply shocked’ to discover that the Executive had spent over £88,000 on removing graffiti from its properties across North Down over the last two financial years. He added, “At a time when departments are struggling to find money with cutbacks, the last thing the Housing Executive needs to be doing is having to waste money removing graffiti put there by silly individuals who are costing the ratepayers of North Down a lot of money.
PRICE PROMISE
“This is money that could be spent in a better way, such as providing homes or indeed doing essential repairs to infrastructure. “Those responsible for graffiti need to wise up and stop this as they are hurting the ratepayers of North Down. “I believe the only way to reduce incidents of graffiti is to impose tougher fines and community service on those caught and make them remove their handiwork.” Mr Easton’s Assembly question asked the Minister for Social Development to detail the cost of removing graffiti from Housing Executive properties in North Down in each of the last two financial years. The minister replied that the Housing Executive had advised him that the cost of removing graffiti from their properties in North Down was as follows - 2012/13, £43,267.15 and 2013/14, £45,080.23. In May intimidating loyalist graffiti was daubed on a gable wall in Bangor’s Clanmorris estate just days after a man was violently assaulted by a masked gang wielding hammers in the Abbey Park area. The terrifying threat included the words, ‘Next time it’s a bullet,’ and was claimed to have been made by a group called ‘Loyalists Against Drugs’ whose name was also daubed alongside the grim warning. The graffiti appeared after a man was attacked by a gang of masked men as he walked along a nearby road and had to be taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

MCWATTERS BAKERY Here is the bread server from ‘McWatters Bakery’, based in Cromac Street, doing his weekly rounds at Chesham Parade, Cregagh in July 1939. The wee children on the cart are (from right) Sidney and Iris Dodsworth and Eric Reardon. McWatter’s Bakery was founded in 1880 and acquired by Inglis & Co in 1954. Their premises were demolished in the 1970s. Horse-drawn transport was very common for delivery men of all types which included bread, milk, coal, fish, laundry and of course household scrap. This bread cart has the very latest pneumatic tyres.
This was once a popular saying in Belfast which described something or someone that was really good. Years ago I remember the bread man calling weekly at our house in his big van. He pulled out long trays from the back of the van and they were full of all types of bread, cakes and biscuits. Most of these familiar bakery names no longer exist. Following on from a recent edition of Loop, which looked at the milkman, here are some images and stories about the bread man in East Belfast and surrounding area over the past 100 years.
BLOOMFIELD BAKERY In 1918 ‘Bloomfield Bakery’ was located at 379-383 Newtownards Road between East Bread Street and Bloomfield Avenue. Here is deliveryman John McCrea in 1920. He drove a team of horses and his daily route involved a trip over the Craigantlet Hills to Newtownards. Bloomfield Bakery was acquired by Inglis & Co in 1933 and the production of bread ceased. The old bakery was demolished and a biscuit factory built on the site in 1937. In 1959 the Rank Hovis Group acquired the business which was eventually closed in 1982.
DAVID H STRAIN David H. Strain (below) grew up at Oughley townland in Co. Down and served his apprenticeship as a baker at Newtownbreda in the 1850s. His first business partner was John Wilson who was connected to the family who founded the Ormeau Bakery. Their business premises were at 1-3 Cromac Street, on the corner of May Street (far left). The business was still in operation in 1910 and the Belfast Street Directory records ‘Wilson & Strain, Ltd., Bakers and Confectioners, Wholesale and Retail Flour Merchants. Tel. Address, “Steam, Belfast.” Tel. No. 1034’. In 1918 the site is recorded as being occupied by Ulster Bank Ltd, Cromac Street Branch and by 1931 the Post Office had constructed a new Automatic Telephone Exchange called ‘Telephone House’. In retirement David H. Strain built houses for letting at Galwally Park and Shandon Park.
ROYAL BAKERY - RAVENHILL George Stewart MBE, (standing far left) founded the ‘Royal Bakery’ at 64a Ravenhill Road in 1903 in an area known as Lagan Village. He was also a brother-in-law of Samuel Brown who owned retail premises at 227229 Woodstock Road. In this old photograph of the Royal Bakery staff, taken in the 1920s, they are making up boxes of oranges and buns probably for a church outing or a similar social occasion. The Royal Bakery was acquired by Inglis & Co in 1959.
BAMFORDS NEWTOWNBREDA
A new ‘Bamford’s Bakery’ shop (left) was opened in 1959 at ‘The Inns’, Newtownbreda. Once the bakery was established and generated a sizable volume of bread products the customer base was expanded to include other grocery shops and eventually a string of Bamford Home Bakery and Dairy shops. The Bamford shops were well spread out and included sites at Newton Park, Ormeau Road, Donegall Pass and Dundonald. There were eventually eighteen outlets which took a lot of hard work to manage. The two delivery vans shuttled back and forth from the bakery all day long topping up stocks at the shops. As well as the retail trade a clientele of hotels, prestigious restaurants, cafés, clubs and bars was developed along with health food shops and supermarkets like Crazy Prices and Supermac plus convenience stores such as Spar. But the local bakery industry was rationalising and Bamford’s Bakery closed in the 1990s. Aidan Campbell has previously published 11 East Belfast local history books entitled: Beaconsfield, Knock, Cherryvalley, Gilnahirk, Castlereagh, Cregagh, Stormont, Sydenham, Belmont and East Belfast Revisited Volumes 1 & 2. Newtownbreda is Aidan’s latest local history book. Aidan regularly gives illustrated talks to local groups and societies. The books retail at £10.00 each and most are available at Hillmount Garden Centre, Marie Curie Hospice, Hamilton News Cregagh and The Wingrove, Ballyhackamore with profits donated to local charity. AWARD-WINNING KITCHEN CAFÉ OPENS ITS DOORS IN EAST BELFAST
EXCITING times lie ahead as the team is bolstered with the addition of the multi award-winning and inspirational Chef, Joery Castel, owner of the Boat House, Bangor, which was recently recognised in The Sunday Times Top 100 Restaurant List. Consulting on the new venture, Joery brings his internationally acclaimed flair and inspiration to the more casual eating experience at Canteen’s Kitchen Café, as he does to The Boathouse.Speaking about the new venture, Barry Heaton Head Chef said “Our ethos has and always will be to source our products locally and seasonally where possible and we hope our diners will enjoy the menu we have created from local produce which is very keenly priced.”
Formerly located in Belfast’s Saint Anne’s Square, Canteen has opened its new kitchen café on the Belmont Road. The award-winning eatery promises to bring the same dedication to exceptional coffee and fantastic food to its new home. The newly crafted menu will feature producers, including Abernethy Butter, Leggygowan Farm Goats Cheese, Cavanagh Free Range Eggs, Rockvale Farm Chicken, Coffeys sausages and Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt. Canteen will be offering an ‘All Day Menu’ and promises is everything you would expect from a Kitchen Café, whether it’s something light or something hearty that takes your fancy. You might have difficulty choosing from the Boathouse Seafood Chowder, Chickpea Falafel, Smoked Salmon Linguine or the chef recommended Hearty Venison Stew. Canteen has long been renowned for providing exceptional coffee, and in 2013 was listed as one of the top 50 coffee houses in the UK. The
new venue will continue to host the ever-popular Coffee Masterclasses and Canteen Supper Club as well as a range of other new events, soon to be revealed. This child-friendly venue will be a welcome addition to the bustling Belmont Road and with an extensive menu, including Gluten Free and Vegetarian, free Wi-Fi with fantastic event and conference facilities. There is even a dedicated children’s area with a selection of toys and books to keep the little ones amused. Canteen, Belmont Road is open Mon – Wed 8.30am-5pm & Thurs – Sat 8.30am-8pm and is located at 10 Belmont Road, Belfast, BT4 2AN. Evening opening invites diners to ‘Bring Your Own Wine’ on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm.

ASDA DUNDONALD’S SHARON CHAMPIONS YEAR OF FOOD SHARON MCBRATNEY, Community Champion (CC) at Asda Dundonald is spearheading the drive to ‘eat local’ as she embarks on a year-long programme of activity as part of Asda’s support for Year of Food & Drink. and shop at Asda. “Year of Food & Drink gives a new dimension to our community work,” said Sharon. “Learning more about Asda’s commitment to the local food industry, and seeing how it is brought to life on our shelves, is vital as we can share this at a community level and play our part in supporting NI’s agri-food sector. From school visits, healthy eating sessions, fundraisers and involvement in events such as Balmoral Show and Open Farm Weekend, this training has primed us to bring a ‘local flavour’ to our community work throughout NI’s Year of Food & Drink.”

THE award-winning Mourne Mountains Brewery has broken lent to announce a brand new and very limited edition chocolate Belgian stout named Chocolat Chaud. MASTER BREWER Tom Ray has created

of Asda’s 16 Community E ach Champions have been trained to make sure they’re fully up to speed with Asda’s local sourcing policies and procedures. This included a guided store walkthrough to identify the local ranges which are amongst the £300million of produce Asda annually sources from food and drink producers across the island of Ireland. The training is important as the CCs are regularly involved in local community work, visiting schools, engaging with senior citizen groups, fundraising and volunteering – with the focus on supporting those who live close to
a very special stout using raw cocoa nibs in the mash to give a deep, chocolately flavour. Orange peel and cloves late in the boil have added some Belgian spice to the brew and it’s been fermented with a fruity, continental yeast. The result is a robust and warming stout with plenty of body. Founder of Mourne Mountains Brewery, local entrepreneur Connaire McGreevy said: “Our last two seasonal beers, Pumpkin Porter in the autumn and First Noel at Christmas were both extremely popular and we want to keep up the momentum in the new year. “We decided to get the ball rolling with
Chocolat Chaud which is an intriguing brew with complex and somewhat unconventional flavours. We think it makes an excellent alternative to Easter eggs for adults, You’ll have to get your hands on a bottle before it’s too late though, it is a one off, limited run brew and will only be available in bars, restaurants and off-licenses across Northern Ireland while stocks last. In addition to their seasonal specials, Mourne Mountains Brewery, based in Warrenpoint, produces five core beers available in bottles and on draft: Mourne Gold pale ale, Red Trail red IPA, Big Rock wheat beer, Mourne Mist pilsner and the award winning East Coast IPA.

The official Giro D’Italia Big Start legacy event returns to Northern Ireland on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June for the second edition of the Gran Fondo.
During 2014 over 950 volunteers helped deliver the Big Start Giro d'Italia, one of the cycling world's elite and iconic events and one of the three Grand Tours, along with the Tour de France and Vuelta a España Following the success of last years Gran Fondo, the 2016 event will be a special experience with fully closed roads, two challenging cycling routes, post ride party with wood fired oven pizzas, pasta dishes and Italian beer and wine. This exciting weekend will also feature activities for families and friends at Titanic Belfast Giro Expo and photo opportunities with the Giro D’Italia Trophy. Volunteers will carry out a range of roles including Marshalling and Meet and Greet and will open up the opportunity to see behind the scenes, get closer to the action and play a role in making this popular event a huge success. Sinead O’Hanlon from Newry is once again volunteering at this prestigious event. Sinead said: "The Giro D'Italia coming to Ireland was such a wonderful event for the province and to be part of something so unique was great. I like to cycle and watch professional cycling on TV so this was the perfect opportunity to help out.” Sinead added, “We were marshalling early morning in Keady a few hours before the race was scheduled to pass us - but the lovely couple who owned the house we were outside invited us to their home for breakfast. This was very welcome and very kind, it demonstrated the nature of the Irish people.” Civil Service North of Ireland Cricket Club (CSNICC) are celebrating after winning three awards at the recent Belfast City Council Sports Awards. Mike Hodgins won the Pathways to Clubs award which deservedly recognised Mike’s hard work in the local schools cricket programme. CSNI Under 15’s were awarded the Junior Team of the Year following their Graham Cup success and Gary Wilson won the Male Sports Personality of the Year. CSNICC Chairman Ivan McMinn said: “It is a fantastic achievement for the club to win three awards at this prestigious event. The work which we are undertaking with local schools is part of our strategy for the long term growth of our Club and this would only have been possible through the foresight and determination of Mike and we are grateful for
the financial assistance from Belfast City Council to help us deliver the programme. This investment in our youth has been further recognised by the success of our Graham Cup winning Under 15 team who won the Junior Team of the Year Award. Gary’s recognition as Male Sports Personality is a further testament to the increasing profile which cricket has in our city. This success gives the whole Club a boost as we look forward to the start of the 2016 season.” The Belfast City Council Sports Awards were held on Friday 18 March, at Belfast City Hall. DUNDELA CLINCH ‘MUST WIN’ TIE AT SWIFTS
Photos courtesy of Andy Gray | Clockwise from below: The teams come out at Glen Road Heights | Dundela players celebrate with their fans | Lee Lenaghan fights for the ball | Dundela’s Colly Smith clears the danger
AFTER the previous week’s disappointing defeat at Glebe Rangers, this was one that Dundela simply had to win and the Duns responded with this fine victory over Sport and Leisure Swifts at a damp Glen Road Heights.
SPORT AND LEISURE SWIFTS 1 | DUNDELA 3 However, they didn’t quite make up as much ground as they might have hoped, with relegation rivals Dollingstown getting a point at home to Tobermore, while Newington YC won at Portstewart. Yet Dundela almost gifted Swifts an early opener, when Lee Lenaghan’s sliced clearance dropped just wide of Jonny Sergeant’s post. The returning James Sofley had Dundela’s first real offering but blazed his shot over the bar. It was the visitors who were now exerting all the pressure and they gained their reward when skipper Mark McClelland bravely flung himself at the ball, to head home at the near post. At the other end, the Duns defence was holding firm, restricting Sport and Leisure to a few ambitious shots from distance. Granted, Darren Gallagher had a chance to put Swifts level but screwed his shot wide before realising the referee’s assistant had raised an offside flag. Dundela were still looking the more likely but Matty Kerr’s free kick was capably dealt with by keeper Magill, and Sofley hoisted another effort over the bar. Joint player manager Stephen Gourley, too, found himself in the unlikely territory of the Swifts box, but could only find the side and not the back of the net. Sport and Leisure lived dangerously once more when keeper Magill had to be on guard, in ushering over an effort from Scotty Collins, which had threatened to dip just underneath the crossbar. Then, just before the break, Lenaghan lashed a free kick just the wrong side of the upright. Swifts made the brighter start on the turnaround, but it was Dundela who came closer; Magill once more springing to the
LOUGHGALL 2 | H&W WELDERS 2 HARLAND and Wolff Welders failed to really capitalise on Ards’ unexpected home defeat by Dergview, having to settle for a point against Loughgall at Lakeview Park. The Welders might not meet the criteria for promotion into the Premiership, the prospect of clinching the Championship 1 title would be anything but a consolation prize, but the Shipyardmen are 4 points behind leaders Ards; each with 5 games still to play. A win at Loughgall, given Dergview’s victory, would have cut that gap to 2 and had Gary Smyth’s side really breathing down Ards necks. There was little between the sides in the opening half, though the scales seemed to tilt the Welders way when Loughgall’s Gary Henderson saw a second yellow turn to red. Nevertheless, it was the 10 men who had first strike; Jamie Rea pouncing on a handling error by keeper Michael Dougherty, but while the ball cannoned off the post, Warner Mullen was on hand to smash home the rebound. A minute later, too, the Welders were also down to 10; Dan McMurray shown a straight red for his reaction after being initially fouled by Mullen. The Shipyardmen, though, levelled matters on 69 minutes, with Scott Davidson scoring from the spot, after he had been sent tumbling by Nicky Hudson inside the box.
rescue as Sofley got onto the end of Collins’ deflected cross. Even so, it needed a smart stoppage from Sergeant to protect the Duns slender advantage, although they were given a boost when Kevin Lynch was redcarded after a lunge on Smith. Dundela wasted no time in exploiting the numbers game, with TJ Murray continuing his good goalscoring form, heading in a set piece. Sport and Leisure did their best to respond but Sergeant managed to arrest the flow of attacks with some fine saves. However, even Sergeant couldn’t keep the Duns out of jail then
Loughgall, however, regained their lead with a penalty of their own on 76 minutes; Mullan firing the ball home after Darren Nixon had brought down Daniel Ryan. The Welders looked like tumbling to what could have been a costly defeat until salvaging a late point when Davidson’s shot took a wicked deflection off Mark Carson on its way past wrong footed keeper Gareth Buchanan. A match, though, that the Welders really should have won, but they just couldn’t break a stubborn Loughgall down – a Loughgall side, too, that were thumped 7-0 by Knockbreda on that very same Lakeview Park earlier in the week! H&W Welders; Dougherty, McMurray, Armstrong, Nixon, Spence, Deans (K Devine), Davidson, Boylan, Middleton (S Devine), Harris (Rainey), McMillan.
E BELFAST 1 | RATHFRILAND RGRS 4
The Division 1a title now will be a hard ask for East Belfast, though they remain on course for promotion into the Premier Division, despite Saturday’s 1-4 defeat by leaders Rathfriland Rangers. East are now 4th, 6 points adrift of second placed Lisburn Rangers, with 3 games in hand. Paul Kirk’s Lisburn, too, have still to come to East Park. It was third time lucky for Rathfriland, as they had already lost to East twice earlier in the season – beaten 4-3 at East Park in Round 3 of the Border Regiment
Cup, and then 2-1 at Iveagh Park in the league back on March 12th. This time, though, East, not for the first time of late, made it hard for themselves, with two players, Ross McCaughan and Stuart Beattie sent off. As assistant manager Paul Wilson lamented, “It’s the same old story, two sent off and you can’t expect to win games with nine men!” Rathfriland took the lead through Conor Larkin on 20 minutes, but back came East through Ryan Oliver. Ten minutes into the second session, however, Ross McCaughan was sent off for what looked like a harsh second yellow; more a case surely of the two players tangling with each other. The East mood didn’t improve when James Costello gave Rathfriland the lead for the second time; East insisting that the Rangers man who laid the ball on was in an offside position. Jonathon Scannell headed in a free kick for Rathfriland’s third, and it really was all over once East’s ten were reduced to nine; Stuart Beattie shown a straight red for speaking out of turn to the referee. The visitors added a fourth, with another ex Irish League campaigner Ally Wilson scoring from the spot. So, disappointment for East, but there’s still a lot to play for in the coming weeks. East Belfast; Currie – Graham, McNaul, McCaughan, Davison – Oliver, Gill (Belshaw), Beattie, Pinkerton – Tumilty (Holmes), Wright (Robb)
Gary Largy headed in from a corner. That set things up nicely for the final quarter. Having built up a head of steam, ten man Swifts went all out for an equaliser, but this inevitably left gaps at the back, one of which was capitalised on by substitute Matty Burrows, cooly slotting in the visitors’ third 10 minutes from time. Yet it might not all been done and dusted had Sergeant not pulled off another late save. Dundela: Sergeant, Collins, Whitford, Smith (West), Gourley, McClelland (c), Lenaghan, Murray, Kerr, Manley (Dornan), Sofley (Burrows).

NEWCASTLE 3 | SIROCCO WORKS 2 DISAPPOINTMENT for Sirocco Works who seemed to have rescued a point against promotion chasing Newcastle at Shimna Integrated College when Kurtis Hanna grabbed an 92nd minute equaliser – only for the Mourne Men to snatch a dramatic last gasp winner 2 minutes later! Sirocco remain in the drop zone, but have more than enough matches in hand to dig themselves out of trouble, although having to negotiate such a hefty backlog will present its own problems. Works opened the scoring through Kurtis Hanna, and they could have consolidated that lead just before half time only Hanna this time was superbly denied by the keeper in a one on one. And worse was to follow, with Newcastle breaking with a telling sting; the cross being headed into his own net
by defender Leigh Cassidy. So instead of two up, it was one a piece as the sides went off at the interval. Instead, Castle inched in front for the first time 10 minutes from time. Things degenerated further when Ryan Bickerstaff was sent off five minutes later. Newcastle must have thought it was merely a matter of seeing out the remainder of the game, only to be rocked back on their heels by that Hanna equaliser two minutes into stoppage time. However, there was to be another sting in the tail, with the home side grabbing the winner with virtually the last kick. Sirocco Works; Reid – Neill, Cassidy, McGrath, Allen (Higginson) – Ashe, Stewart, Fleming (Anderson) – Hanna, Bickerstaff, Forsyth. Sub (unused) Frame. “We recently sold one property and purchased another through James Duggan Estates. The transition was problem free due to the friendly and professional service we received. Great consideration was given to all aspects of our move, almost on a day to day basis. Staff had a good knowledge of the local area and we were happy with the way the presentation of our property that was portrayed. We are happy to recommend this company at any time”
