TESCO KNOCKNAGONEY ROLLS OUT THE NEW GO-TO SHOPPING TROLLEY AUG #19 AUGUST 2016 / TROLLEY GOOD SHOW
F
The need for specialist trolley seats is one recognised by families with children with disabilities and special needs. The current lack of adapted and adequate facilities means many families are unable to bring their children shopping with them – resulting in both children and families being deprived of valuable time spent together.
irefly by Leckey, the Lisburn-based manufacturer which has transformed lives for disabled children and their families across the world with the now famous Upsee walking harness, is transforming shopping trips following the launch in Tesco Knocknagoney of its GoToShop trolley seat invention. The GoToShop Trolley has been designed to make shopping easier for parents and carers of children with disabilities and more comfortable for the child and comes with a secure 5-point harness, padded seat and open front for easy transfer. Tesco Knocknagoney is pleased to announce that they have 3 of these specialist trolleys available for use in-store. supermarket to introduce the GoToShop trolley. The Bangor mother explained that the importance of the shopping trolley could not be underestimated. “For parents of disabled children, it is the little things that make a big difference.” She added “Shopping trips can often be a major - if not impossible task - for parents and this trolley is exactly what is needed. Shopping used to be such a stressful experience for me, but the new trolley makes a genuine difference. It’s great to see that supermarkets across Northern Ireland and beyond are recognising the vital need for these trolleys. “I asked my local supermarket to offer the trolley and they were very obliging, so I would encourage families to ask their local stores and join the #everysupermarket campaign.”
LOCAL BUSINESSES HELP TO PROMOTE THE IMPORTANCE OF EMOTIONAL HEALTH #19 / AUGUST 2016 / EMOTIONAL HEALTH This summer East Belfast Community Development Agency (EBCDA) is working together with local businesses, churches and community service providers to promote emotional health and suicide prevention.
O
ver the past three years, several similar campaigns have been done across East Belfast including partnerships with local bars, bookmakers, shops and sports clubs. This project is different in that it will target people from Eastern Europe with information published in five different languages: Polish, Slovak, Lithuanian, Latvian and Czech. Leaflets in these five languages will be distributed to shops, cafes, churches and other community venues which are regularly used by people who are from Eastern Europe. The leaflet gives the message “Your Emotional Health is Important” and lists sources of support which offer bilingual or translation services to those who do not have English as their
first language. EBCDA’s Suicide Prevention Development Officer Clare Flynn explains: “We have done many similar projects in the past targeting different groups – for example, we have worked with Glentoran FC on several occasions to get information out to local men. For this project we decided to target people living in East Belfast who are originally from Eastern European countries. There is evidence that people from minority backgrounds are less likely to access services if they are having emotional health issues. The reasons for this could include language barriers and a lack of awareness of the services that exist including the statutory health system. We also took into account

COMMUNITIES URGED TO APPLY FOR £500,000 AWARDS
Local community groups and individuals are being encouraged to apply for a social enterprise awards scheme. The Housing Executive has recently launched the second round of its Social Housing Enterprise Investments awards, with a £500,000 fund. that when someone is emotionally distressed it can be really hard for them to express how they feel in their own language, let alone in a second language. For this reason we chose to have the information printed in Eastern European languages and to only list services which offer bilingual staff or interpreters as standard.” East Belfast Independent Advice Centre (EBIAC) are one of the organisations displaying the leaflets and they are also currently working with the Migrant Centre NI to offer interpreters for their clients. MEW LIGHT ON THE HORIZON FOR EAST BELFAST #19 / AUGUST 2016 / THE LIGHT SIDE
T
Mew Island lighthouse Optic will have a bright future as the ‘iconic gateway’ to Belfast Waterfront, with the appointment of local Architects Hall McKnight and support from East Belfast Councillors.
itanic Foundation have announced that Hall McKnight, a Belfast & London based Architectural Practice, have been named the winners of a competition to design a structure to house a 130 year old lighthouse optic. The firm was chosen ahead of 11 contestants to create an iconic structure to protect, preserve and provide public access to the Mew Island Lighthouse Optic, which will be located in Titanic Quarter. The competition was organised in partnership with the Royal Society of Ulster Architects, who provided advice and guidance to help Titanic Foundation run a high profile design competition, putting design quality to the fore for the project. The competition received a great response with 12 prestigious International firms submitting proposals. Ciarán Fox, Director, Royal Society of Ulster Architects commented, “The approach taken to appoint the architect for this project allowed the client to see a wonderful range of creative ideas. The focus was on design quality and the ability to see the project through from concept to delivery. What we build tends to be with us for a long time so getting the design right at the front end is an investment which pays for itself many times over. We hope that this project can add to Belfast’s cultural landscape for generations to come.”
Over the last year, Titanic Foundation and the Commissioners of Irish Lights have been awarded a first-round pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund for saving, restoring and displaying the old optic from Mew Island Lighthouse, which is a very rare hyper radial Fresnel lens, possibly the largest of its kind ever constructed. This award, along with early support from Ulster Garden Villages, and more recently a commitment, in principle, of £85,000 from Belfast City Council’s Local Investment Fund will allow the project to progress to the second stage of the HLF application process. The optic which is 130 years old, seven metres tall and weighs approximately 10 tonnes is a unique heritage object with significance to Belfast’s economic, maritime and industrial past. The optic will be restored and housed in a new interpretive structure, designed to last for 100 years and made to resemble a lighthouse lantern room where it will add a remarkable element to the Titanic Quarter public realm. It is estimated that at least 100,000 visitors per annum will view the optic. With free public access it will tell the story of lighthouses, their technological development, their light keepers, and their role in the proud maritime & industrial heritage of Belfast and Ulster. Titanic Foundation’s Chief
Executive, Kerrie Sweeney, said: “Hall McKnight really captured the beauty of Mew Island optic. It’s an amazing piece of scientific heritage and requires a design that allows the optic to be appreciated visually and intellectually, near and far. It was a very competitive process and we were thrilled by the response. I’m delighted that Hall McKnight & Belfast City Council are both now on board to deliver the new landmark for Belfast’s waterfront”. The winning firm Hall McKnight, said:” Hall McKnight are delighted to have won this design contest. We are excited by the opportunity to help the public and visitors to engage with the valuable marine heritage of Belfast, and hope that our proposals will allow the craftsmanship and beauty of this unique object to be clearly presented to a new audience”. Mew Island lighthouse, on the outermost of the Copeland Islands, is one of the tallest lighthouses in Ireland. It is an important Aid to Navigation at the southern entrance to Belfast Lough, built at a time when Belfast was the world-centre of linen, ship-building and rope-making, and one of the most important ports in the World. The lighthouse has recently been modernised, reducing its operational footprint and converting it to solar power. The optic is the internal apparatus which gave Mew Island Lighthouse its traditional revolving light.

MARIE CURIE’S FLAGSHIP EVENT WALK TEN IS BACK #19 AUGUST 2016 / A WALK IN THE PARK
alk Ten event is now in its sixth year, during which time it has raised over £500,000. This money has had a huge impact on people, and their families living with a terminal illness and has enabled Marie Curie to continue to deliver its nursing service in the community and at its specialist hospice in based in East Belfast. In addition to its nursing service, Marie Curie has used this money to develop and deliver innovative services that can help support more people living with a terminal illness. The services include the Helper Service that offers companionship and emotional support and the creation of a dedicated information and support telephone line (0800 090 2309) that offers useful information about living with a terminal illness and how to access expert nursing care. Commenting on this year’s Walk Ten event, Ciara Gallagher, Head of Fundraising, Marie Curie NI said, “Walk Ten is a fantastic event and one that is always brilliantly supported by the public. Walk Ten is a great excuse to get together with friends, family or colleagues for a beautiful 10K walk around Stormont. The great thing about Walk Ten is that it’s a very sociable event. Participants take part at their own pace and we actively encourage
walkers to bring a picnic, so they can relax and enjoy the live entertainment and firework finale after their walk Any money raised from the event will be used my Marie Curie to help more people living with any terminal illness.” This year’s event will be supported by Forestside Shopping Centre. This is the first time the Marie Curie Walk Ten event will have a headline partner. Forestside has participated in the event over the years and having witnessed the impact the event has on the walkers the Centre took the decision to become more involved. Forestside Centre Manager, Lee Cutler said, “We have been working with Marie Curie for a number of years now and have come to understand how important the charity is to the wider community, but more particularly to our customer base. The Centre has been supporting Walk Ten for a number of years now; we’ve entered teams and supported walkers with an array of hospitality offerings. We’ve seen first-hand how important Walk Ten is and the impact it has on people of all ages. Some participate to remember a loved one, others do it as a way of thanking the charity for the support that it provides and some just turn up to lend morale support to friends and family. So, this year we decided to get fully behind the event. Our aim is simple; to make the 2016 Walk Ten the best ever by encouraging as many people as possible to participate and in turn helping to raise more money for Marie Curie.” Registration for Walk Ten is now open. Walkers can sign up by visiting www.mariecurie.org.uk/walkten or for more information call 028 9088 2060.

EAST BELFAST T AREA GROUPS SHARE IN GRANTS BOOST FROM AWARDS FOR ALL
his is part of a Big Lottery Fund grants roll out today of £847,374 to 101 groups across Northern Ireland including £39,172 for the east Belfast area. East Belfast Alternatives Limited is a restorative justice community based programme that works to help tackle antisocial behaviour and community disputes. They are using the £7,776 grant to improve the employability and personal development of young people aged 16-24 years through a Give and Take: START programme. Daniel Black (19) left school with no qualifications in 2013. He was very bright but he found that school didn’t engage him and he didn’t put the effort in. “Mainstream education just didn’t suit me. My mates were messing about in class and taking off school and I followed them. I was easily distracted and didn’t do any of my coursework for my GCSEs so I didn’t do well. I left school and basically did nothing for a long time. I was getting into trouble. I felt hopeless, wasteful and bored,” he said. But as Daniel watched his friends start jobs and apprenticeships and saw them doing well, he started feeling that he wanted something to work towards. “I had gained a bit of maturity as well over the last couple of years, so I wanted to make a change. I was able to get a Christmas job last year but then it hit me about a month later: What am I going to do now? In January it was clear to me that what was wrong with me wasn’t all that complicated, I just needed a job - any job - and that would give me some hope for the future.” As the eldest of seven children, Daniel was starting to feel some responsibility to be a role model as well. Concerned about him, Daniel’s parents put him in touch with East Belfast Alternatives, a restorative justice community based programme that works to help tackle antisocial behaviour and community disputes. Daniel has

been doing well in the project funded by Awards for All and is getting his life back on track. “Maths and English are easy for me here at East Belfast Alternatives because this format suits me much better. It’s less formal, and more focused. The classes are very small and everyone who is here wants to be here. We have a great, friendly and informal relationship with the teachers. I get out of bed these days without complaining to come to these classes. I have met a lot of new people, and people from different backgrounds, including Abdulla from Somalia and people from different areas of Belfast. Everyone is here for different reasons, so it’s interesting.” According to Ashleigh Roberts, East/South Belfast START Coordinator, Daniel has good chance of getting an apprenticeship in joinery in September with a local contractor after he passes his Maths and English exams. Daniel said: “A good chance means I will get it because I’m not going to lose out because I didn’t try hard enough. I’m working hard and looking forward to having a useful job.” Daniel has become a role model to his friends and his younger siblings. “I have been encouraging them to stay in school and try to do well. They can relate to me more and they listen to me. I didn’t have anyone close to my age to look up to so hopefully I can be that person to my friends and family.” Ashleigh Roberts said the courses and laptops funded by Awards for All have made a big impact on Daniel and the other people taking part. “There has been such a change over the last few months with Daniel. He is less shy and more confident and he has had his horizons broadened through meeting a lot of new people. I’ll be delighted to see him placed in an apprenticeship in September and on his way to a rewarding job.”

AFTER A NASTY ANKLE BREAK BACK IN 2006 AND AN OPERATION INVOLVING INSERTING A PLATE AND SCREWS, ISABELLE SUFFERED FROM PAIN AND SWELLING. IT WASN’T UNTIL SHE READ ABOUT NORTHERN IRELAND FOOT & ANKLE CLINIC THAT SHE PAID THEM A VISIT AND BEGAN TO FEEL AND WALK NORMALLY AGAIN
y name is Isabelle, I broke my ankle in February 2006 when I missed the last step on the stairs and as a result in the words of the Hospital Consultant “it was a nasty break” I required an operation involving the insertion of a plate and screws through both sides of my leg and my ankle as well as screws through the base of my foot. From that I have always had pain and swelling in my ankle even though I had several physiotherapy sessions. I have tried all types of orthopaedic
insoles on the market with little or no improvement. I also had a limp which I was conscious of. Then in February of this year I saw an article in our local magazine. I read about the Northern Ireland Foot & Ankle Clinic in Glengormley who had developed a special insole which helps people with ankle injuries. I made an appointment to see Mr Hallowell who assessed my ankle and gave me a sample rocker insole to try out. I immediately felt I was walking normally for the first time in 8 years.
Mr Hallowell then took a cast of my foot to have a rocker made to suit me. I got the rocker insole about a week later and I have been using it since March this year. It has made an amazing difference to my walking and has greatly reduced my pain. On a recent holiday I was able to walk further than at any time in the last 8 years and was completely pain free. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has foot or ankle problems you will not be disappointed.

BALLYHACKAMORE CREDIT UNION READY TO ASSIST WITH BACK TO SCHOOL COSTS Many families in Northern Ireland struggle with the significant costs associated with sending their kids back to school. School uniforms, school books, school bags...the list is long, and costly, when it comes to getting your children kitted out for the new school year. And it’s almost that time of year again. So whether it’s uniforms, bags, books or fees, a Back to School loan with Ballyhackamore Credit Union can help take the pressure off your purse-strings now, or throughout the school year. We will ensure everything is clear and straightforward, so you can get on with the organising, with the knowledge that you can manage the cost, your way. Research commissioned by the Irish League of Credit Unions in 2015 highlights just how hard it is for some families to cover all of the costs of getting their children ready for the new school year. 71% of parents believe that covering Back to School costs is a financial burden, and 6 in 10 parents admit that they will have to sacrifice spending on other household items to cover those costs. The research also highlighted that for those who needed to borrow to pay for back to school items, they found themselves in debt for an average of £320. Families, particularly those with more than one child attending school, can find it extremely difficult to meet the costs that a new school year brings, and keep up with the demands of children who want branded, more expensive items. But before being lured into borrowing from high cost lenders, speak to Ballyhackamore Credit Union about loans that are fair and reasonable, and less expensive than those of money-lenders, pay-day firms, credit cards and other financial institutions. A spokesperson from Ballyhackamore Credit Union said: “We are aware how much of a financial burden the cost of sending children back to school is for many families. Here at Ballyhackamore Credit Union we want to do all we can to help our members. We would urge parents to shop around for the best value in back to school items like school books and uniforms and even check online for better value and discount options. We also recommend that you check what you have left over from last year and then make a list of everything you need to buy and stick to that list.” She continued “At such an important time of year for children, we want to help take the pressure off families who otherwise might rely on high-cost credit, or payday lenders, to get what they need. Our Back to School Loans are designed to suit your needs… how much you borrow, how quickly you pay it back, and how often those repayments are, weekly or monthly, can all be tailored to suit you.” VISIT WWW.BHCU.CO.UK, OR TALK TO A MEMBER OF STAFF TODAY *COST OF FINANCE FOR A £500, 1 YEAR FIXED INTEREST RATE LOAN, WITH 12 MONTHLY REPAYMENTS OF £45, AN INTEREST RATE OF 12%, A REPRESENTATIVE APR OF 12.64 %; THE TOTAL AMOUNT PAYABLE BY THE MEMBER WILL BE £532.77. DAVID SAYS
It was clear from watching Isabelle walk that her ankle movement was very limited and that the limitation was causing her severe pain. These chronic ankle injuries are relatively common and they follow a familiar progressive pattern from an initial injury to chronic foot and ankle pain. Some of the patients I see have had surgery and some are trying to avoid having an operation. The limited movement of the ankle puts stress on all the surrounding joints so that often the patient attends the clinic with foot or knee pain rather than ankle pain. The rocker is designed to reduce this stress by re-establishing/mimicking the normal ankle movement. Happily since we started making it the feedback has been very positive. We are currently trying to find what other conditions it may be useful for. My hope is that we can get the device accepted into the mainstream of orthopaedic devices so that it can be offered to patients after surgery. Currently many patients are given rocker bottom shoes which can be bulky and are not always user friendly

This is typical of the type of feedback we’ve been getting with the rocker, it’s always very gratifying to hear that patients are experiencing a really positive result.

£200K BOOST FOR EAST BELFAST GROUP #19 AUGUST 2016 / LOCAL AWARDS
Men in east Belfast are gaining new skills and improving their well-being, thanks to a grant from Big Lottery Fund.
Ballybeen Men’s Motivation group has been awarded £199,740 for their four-year Men’s Shed project. It is one of four projects across Northern Ireland that are receiving grants totalling £1,051,936 today under our People and Communities programme (see separate table for list of awards). The Ballybeen Men’s Shed Project is supporting men in Ballybeen in east Belfast to improve their health, wellbeing, skills and confidence. The project is building on their existing men’s shed pilot project using ideas from local men. A new dedicated space is being created with equipment for men of all ages to come together and take part in activities they choose. The project also includes an informal drop-in service, intergenerational
workshops, a physical and mental well-being programme, and a work skills programme to support the men back to work. The project will visit other men’s sheds to share their learning. Joanne McDowell, Big Lottery Fund NI Director, said: “I am delighted to announce the first four grants awarded under the People and Communities programme, which is investing £60 million over the next five years to support voluntary, community and social enterprise groups to work with local people to make the changes they want in their communities. “We want to fund great projects that work with local people, build on a community’s strengths, and are well connected to other services and activities in the community. We
are looking forward to seeing the positive impact these projects will make to people and communities across Northern Ireland. Remember this programme is open for five years so groups have plenty of time to work with local people to develop their project idea. You can call our People and Communities advice line on 0300 123 33 31 at any stage to discuss your idea.” The People and Communities programme offers grants of between £30,000 and £500,000 for two to five year projects. HOMEWORK IS NOW A BREEZE THANKS TO LEARNING BREAKTHROUGH #19 AUGUST 2016 / LOCAL BUSINESS Madeline has transformed her life after a programme with Learning Breakthrough. From low concentration, fidgeting and and frustrating homework sessions to a happy girl with top marks and commendations, her mum Judith tells her wonderfful story.
t age 7 my daughter Madeleine was diagnosed with Dyslexia after an Educational Psychologist assessment. She was also referred by her GP to an Occupational Therapist to help with tying her shoe laces, using a knife and fork etc. From P3 she had an IEP which was revised every term. She attended the school SENCO for one to one lessons and we also paid privately for Madeleine to attend the N. Ireland Dyslexia Centre. Madeleine still fidgeted, couldn’t sit still, was easily distracted and had no consequences of her actions. She was very disorganised, just read the words on the page like a list and didn’t understand the story. She couldn’t retain spellings and basically wrote as little as she could get away with! Every evening homework was a battle and would never have been

completed only for myself or her Dad sitting with her throughout. A game of cards would result with the cards being on the floor!!!! It was all a big strain on the family life, not just for us but for Madeleine too. We noticed she was becoming more and more disinterested in school. After years of struggle to help Madeleine to read and retain spellings etc we found Susan and the Learning Breakthrough Programme. In January 2012, Madeleine’s primary 6 year, we started the 12 month programme doing 15 minutes of balance and co-ordination exercises twice per day. After a few months we noticed improvements in Madeleine’s concentration, memory recall and motivation. As we continued we noticed improvements in all the areas that had previously caused us concern and best of all, Madeleine was happier. Madeleine is now in high

school and got top marks for her class in both Maths and English! She was commended by her teacher for being so organised and a pleasure to teach - not a report expected for our child with Dyslexia! We have no doubt that this result would not have been possible without the Learning Breakthrough Programme. It was hard work at times but worth every minute and penny invested. We would not have completed the programme without Susan’s unending support, encouragement and guidance. We really have a lot to thank Susan for. We would recommend the programme to any parent who is struggling to help their child through the battleground of trying to learn with Dyslexia.

THE MOST DANGEROUS PARASITE? PROTECT YOUR DOG.
PAGE 15 Expert Advice
PATRICK MCKEE BVETMED BSC MRCVS
Local Vet
“
Last month, I talked about the amazing world of dog worms, (parasites are fascinating!) but in this email, I wanted to warn against a particularly dangerous worm and now in summer, protection is important as we’re in an especially risky time of year:
3 months with the correct wormer. Some dogs should be wormed more often and we are happy to discuss the right product and interval for your pet with you at any time. We even send you a free text or email reminder when your next worming dose is due.
This worm is especially dangerous to dogs as it lives in the lungs and major blood vessels around the heart. It releases anti-clotting factors into the dog’s blood causing it to be unable to clot. This causes breathing difficulty and uncontrolled nasal, lung and abdominal bleeding. It is life threatening.
Comprehensive worm protection for your dog costs from as little as £6.90 for a collie sized dog. That’s less than 8p per day for peace of mind. None of the readily available treatments in supermarkets, pet shops or online will treat for this lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum).
The especial risk in catching it is by eating slugs and snails, even really really tiny ones which could be on a leaf or in the grass or under the hedge.
Please help us to help you keep your canine companion safe by giving them the right worming treatment at the right times.
Most of our pets are keen to be sniffing around outside and are not averse to consuming interesting organic morsels, we’ve all seen our pets happily eat things outside and we wonder where the attraction is. Even dog food bowls or grassy vegetation contaminated by small slugs are risks. We recommend that dogs should be wormed at least every

How Does Your Garden Grow? By Aidan Campbell After all the excitement of the Euro 2016 Football Championships (not to mention the commendable efforts of the Norn Iron team) I thought it was a good time for something a bit more sedate. The time was when there many garden centres (or garden nurseries) in East Belfast that grew flowers and vegetables. They are shipped in from abroad now. Is your house on the site of an old greenhouse?
Kingsden Park or Camlin’s Nursery
After turning into Kensington Road from Knock Road and passing the Marie Curie Hospice, the first turning on the right-hand side is Kensington Gardens. Once the Knock district contained a number of garden nurseries, one of which was Kingsden Park or Camlin’s Nursery, although the site is mostly built-up now. The Governor of Northern Ireland, Earl Granville and the Countess Granville (a sister of the Queen Mother) visited Camlin’s Nursery at Knock in 1951 to inspect carnations named in their honour. Ernest Camlin, right, is pictured with sons Davvie, centre and Ernie at rear.
Larkfield Road Nursery
An earlier generation of the Camlin family had established a garden nursery at Larkfield Road, Sydenham not far from the railway station and that too has been developed with housing. Camlin’s were famous for daffodils and staff member Peggy McCausland holds a lovely bunch in one of their large greenhouses in 1950. This photograph was taken by Ernie Camlin who was known locally for his adventures as a ‘frogman’. Peggy explained that she was not usually this well dressed for work but was nicely turned out for a Spring article in the Belfast Telegraph.
Hillmount Nursery In 1984 Lord Lyell was Minister of Agriculture and he paid a visit to Hillmount Nursery Centre along with local radio and TV horticultural personality Crosbie Cochrane to view the season’s latest pot plants and meet Trevor Mercer and a youthful Robin Mercer. Hill Mercer (Robin’s grandfather) bought a small holding at Gilnahirk in 1940 and the first greenhouse was built in 1942. Before coming to Gilnahirk, Hill had rented some land and greenhouse space from Mrs. Molyneaux at Dundela and Mrs. Watson at Rosemount on Knock Road from 1936 until the move to Gilnahirk. Hillmount has gone from strength to strength and in 2015 celebrated 75 years in business.
George McMullan
Not a garden but an allotment. George McMullan had worked for Belfast Corporation for many years as a tram driver. His hobby was horticulture and here he stands on a summer day in 1984 at his Belmont Road allotment (now the site of Clonallon Court) amidst lots of colour. He was very experienced at growing chrysanthemums and tomatoes and often won cups, rosettes and certificates for his entry at local gardening competitions.
Knock Nursery
Proprietor William Magee is pictured, standing to the rear and wearing a hat, with the substantial workforce at Knock Nursery in around 1910. The nursery was on a large scale and covered over 7 acres. It was located at Ballyhackamore and extended from the Upper Newtownards Road at the front, to King’s Road at the rear, and the boundaries were beyond Knockhill Park on one side and Pasadena Gardens on the other. William Magee seems to have been well respected in the area and was responsible for much landscaping of the gardens of large properties around Belfast including Belfast City Hall grounds.
Cregagh Nursery
This is how the site of Cregagh Presbyterian Church looked from Ardenlee Parade in 1920. The small building to the far right is the ‘Iron Church’, first occupied in March 1902 and the foundation stones of the present Cregagh Presbyterian Church were laid in 1928. Previously the site was occupied by a garden nursery. In the 1923 Belfast Street Directory the proprietor of Cregagh Nursery is listed as J.C. Stewart, engineer who lived next door at Foxvale House.

o tie in with Northern Ireland’s Year of Food and Drink ‘Seas, Rivers and Loughs’ month, Belfast Metropolitan College is thrilled to be delivering the city’s first Fish Frying apprenticeship scheme. Belfast Met tutor Ben Polley, said: “Belfast Met in partnership with John Dory’s Award Winning Fish and Chip Shops is thrilled to be able to deliver Belfast’s first Fish Frying Apprenticeships. Supported by Seafish, this programme recognises the skill of employees whilst adding a valuable qualification framework to this
thriving local industry. Our Fish Frying Apprenticeship Scheme was launched in October 2015 and apprentices are currently working towards a FDQ level 2 Diploma in Fish and Shellfish Industry Skills. The qualification involves gaining practical skills in John Dorys shops across the city. We are hoping they graduate from Belfast Met with great skills in seafood preparation, excellent fish frying knowledge and the ability to provide exemplary levels of customer service. As Belfast Met celebrates its 110th year we can look back and see that trades and skills are very much embedded

in our heritage…from the shipbuilding and textiles…and now fish frying. The College’s heritage and legacy is something we plan to highlight this year through various events including the launch of our brand new Linen Lounge restaurant which will be opened to the public in the Titanic Quarter campus this October.” As well as fish frying and traditional subjects, Belfast Met’s Apprenticeship Programme provides training in a range of other areas such as accountancy, IT, or civil engineering. New research from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has revealed that 68% of UK adults have thrown food away in the past month. Over two thirds (36%) said they have discarded food as it was past its use by date. Other top reasons for throwing food away include buying too much and not eating it (30%); and not having the chance to eat food before it went off (23%). Kevin Hargin, head of Foodborne Disease Control at the FSA said: “Every year, we throw away seven million tonnes of food and drink from our homes. Much of this waste is unnecessary, and a better understanding of how to freeze food safely could go a significant way towards tackling the problem. Our research shows that many of the fears the public has about freezing food are unfounded and we need to ensure they know the facts. 31% of the people we spoke to said that more information about how to safely freeze food would help them to reduce their food waste.” FOR MORE INFORMATION ON FREEZING FOOD SAFELY, VISIT WWW.BELFASTCITY.GOV. Past Tense Treats of Warrenpoint has become one of only 878 entrants to be awarded a 2-star Great Taste award for its delicious Salted Caramel Chocolate Brownie at this year’s Great Taste Awards 2016. Great Taste, the world’s most coveted blind-tasted food awards, which celebrates the very best in food and drink, judged over 10,000 products before announcing the Great Taste stars of 2016. “This win is a significant first for Past Tense Treats, as we have only recently launched our products,” explains Managing Director of Past Tense Treats, Jackie Reid who also owns successful sandwich manufacturing company Deli Lites Ireland with husband Brian Reid. We have put a great deal of effort into ensuring our handmade products are of the highest standard, and winning a prestigious Great Taste Award has been incredible. We are hopeful that this will increase our success as a newly established business, and that customers will be drawn to our products as a result of it.” Judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. Great Taste 2016 will reach its exciting finale on Monday 5 September, when the world of fine food gathers at the Royal Garden Hotel in London to find out the Golden Fork winners for each region at an Awards Dinner, with the final applause reserved for the Great Taste Supreme Champion 2016.

MAKING A T SPLASH ON TWO WHEELS FOR CHARITY Declan Cunnane, Northern Ireland Chest, Heart & Stroke Chief Executive (right) and Jeremy Gardiner, Stroke Survivor and Gran Fondo 5th place finalist (left) take advantage of the fountains at Custom House Square, Belfast to ‘cool down in the warm up’ for NICHS’s Step Up Cycle on 1st October 2016 along the North Coast.

HEALTH
he two keen cyclists came together to train for NICHS’s Step Up & Ride Cycle which will take in the best of the stunning North Coast. Starting and finishing in Portballintrae, cyclists will pedal their way through Bushmills, the famous Dark Hedges, the Antrim Glens with views of the notorious Torr Head, before passing the Giant’s Causeway on the way home. Jeremy, from Cherry Valley is encouraging novice and experienced cyclists alike to join them in 70km or 100km distances and explains how he became passionate about cycling “I started cycling in April 2014 (when I turned 40) as a way to get fit. It started with a group of 5 friends who used to head out on a Sunday morning for a few hours, covering around 30 miles with no real goal in mind. With the first Gran Fondo legacy cycle taking place in June 2015, we (me and friends) decided to sign up and give ourselves a goal to focus on. It was at this stage that my enjoyment for cycling took off. Having a goal, enabled me to breakdown my training plan into sizable chunks, which in turn increased my motivation because I could watch myself become a stronger cyclist. The day itself was excellent, having closed roads is something every cyclist should experience at least once in their lifetime. The sense of achievement was exhilarating, inspiring me to achieve more. For me, cycling, gives me energy, offers me a place to focus on what I’m doing at the moment in time and forget about all the stresses that are going on around me. There’s nothing more relaxing than you, the bike and the road.” Although Jeremy sounds like novice
cyclist turned exceptional by coming 5th out of over 2000 cyclists in this year Gran Fondo, his story is even more extraordinary. Jeremy continued “Whenever anyone talked to me about having a Stroke I made a couple of assumptions, which now I know are completely false. Firstly, people who suffer a stroke are of a certain age and demographic and secondly, people who suffer a stroke are not physically active. I’m not sure where I got these ideas, but on the 6th April 2016, my view dramatically changed. It was 7pm and my wife (Catherine) and I had been travelling home after having been out for dinner at a local restaurant. I was driving, which now seems crazy, but while on the way home I started to feel nauseas. On arriving home, I said to Catherine, I think I will go out for a run to clear my head. After changing into my running gear I stood up about to head out, when I got a buzzing sound in my ear. It was really strange; I’ve never had anything like that before. Then, totally out of the blue, my balance went. My body lost control and I fell to the floor. Not knowing what was happening, the only thing I could communicate was that there was something seriously wrong. That moment began a ten-day investigation in hospital, going through multiple tests to find out that I had taken a Stroke in the Cerebellum part of my brain (effecting my balance), which was potentially caused by a hole in the heart, an issue I’ve had since being a child without being aware. The challenge for me, however, in coming to terms with this event has been firstly, I’m only 42, and secondly, I’m physically fit.

MY FIRST EYE TEST ry Rosema rs McWatte I am often asked by parents at what age a child should come for their first eye test. All parents seem to realise the need for children to go to the dentist regularly for checks. Unfortunately when it comes to eye tests many parents wait until they suspect their child is having difficulties. But don’t expect your child to tell you if there is a problem as it does not work like that.
Children assume that the way they see is normal as they will not have known anything different. Most children will have vision screening done at school at the end of P1. However, the earlier any problems are picked up the better the outcome. If problems are not picked up at an early age, your child may have permanently reduced vision in one or both eyes. This is why opticians like to check all children at least before they start nursery school, if not sooner.
· It is best to take your child to a local optometrist, who you trust, for a sight test. · This is free under the NHS for all children under 16.
Taking part in the Step Up & Ride is a personal acknowledgment of firstly, that this happened to me and secondly, that it can happen to anyone at any point in time. So I’d like to invite all my fellow cyclists out there to join Northern Ireland Chest, Heart & Stroke’s North Coast Cycle to help raise funds and awareness in order that we can be better educated, to have our assumptions challenged and also that we have the right care and support for the thousands of individuals who have been permanently impacted through an event like this.” Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke’s Chief Executive, Declan Cunnane explains further about the Step Up & Ride Cycle “NICHS celebrates it’s 70th Anniversary this year and has launched a new programme of events called Step Up, where ordinary people do something extraordinary together. I am delighted to be taking part in the Step Up Cycle along with Jeremy, who is an outstanding example of an extraordinary person overcoming adversity. NICHS has been at the forefront of the battle against the biggest health risks Northern Ireland has faced in the last 70 years, but the battle is far from over. The fact that many more people are surviving heart attack and stroke, and living with respiratory conditions, means that our support services for families are in more demand than ever before. We pride ourselves in being the only local charity tackling heart disease, stroke and lung disease. In seven decades, every penny we have raised has been spent in Northern Ireland for the benefit of local people.”
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) in NI have released the first NI specific report into the daily salt intake of adults, which found that people are consuming an alarming 43% more salt than they should be. The report, which has been published as an official statistic as part of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS), estimated the salt intake of adults, aged 19-64 years in NI, over a seven month period in 2015. The average salt intake was found to be 8.6g per day - 43% higher than the recommended maximum limit of 6g per day, with men eating more than women. The FSA can identify from the wider NDNS that white bread, meat products such as bacon and ham, and foods such as cooking sauces, soups and condiments are the biggest contributors of salt in people’s diets in NI. To increase people’s awareness of the salt content of foods, many businesses are using front of pack nutrition labelling. This colour coded labelling system means foods are coloured red, amber and green, to show people at a glance what is in their food.
FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON SALT AND IMPROVING DIET VISIT: HTTP://WWW.NHS.UK/LIVEWELL/GOODFOOD/PAGES/SALT.ASPX Regardless of whether or not you have any concerns about your child’s eyes but especially if there is a family history of wearing spectacles from a very young age or squint or lazy eye, then do not wait for the vision screening at school. Your child does not have to be able to read or talk to have a sight test as we have pictures and other age appropriate tests. With kids we concentrate on things like muscle balance and 3D vision. We also give advice to children and teenagers about maintaining good vision, including the importance of spending time outside as well as how they use their electronic devices in this digital age. So from toddlers to teenagers, make sure you bring your kids along for their regular eye tests.

NATURAL WAVES
If you have straight hair braid your hair the night before on damp hair , the next morning take the braids out brush the hair and add a little gloss to create a natural waved look. If you have natural wavy hair, Scrunch a little texturizing polish into wet hair, then blow dry. While you’re drying, use your hands to gently scrunch your hair to create natural waves.
Sabrina
After the summer holidays your hair is going to need a good detox or deep conditioning treatment particularly if you’ve been out in the sun mainly or have chlorine buildup in their hair this can make the hair look dull and feel dry.
HALF BUN
Use a wand to add light waves to your hair, then grab a hair tie and make a messy knot on top of your head, add a little texture dust to create volume and a tousled texture.
TOUSLED PONY
Let your hair be it’s natural self or you could give it a loose wave, then throw it up into a super high pony. Add some hair spray and tease your tail for a trendy first day at school look.
YOUNGER KIDS!
Children’s hair and scalps are even more delicate than adults so after weeks of sun exposure, chlorine contamination and general abandonment, a much needed trim is in order. Trimming away any dehydrated ends will keep their hair looking thicker, healthy and full of vitality!!
School Time - Advice On Head Lice
MULTI BRAIDED BUN
Section your hair into your preferred number of sections, then braid each section of hair. Swirl the ends of each braid into a bun and secure with hair pins.
BACK TO SCHOOL DON’T FORGET TO BOOK A
SIGHT TEST FREE TESTING FOR KIDS
FREE BACK TO SCHOOL GIFT FOR EVERY CHILD HAVING AN NHS EYE EXAMINATION IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER.
TWISTED UP TOP KNOT
Pull your hair back into a high pony. Then twist the pony around until it’s tight and forms a knot. Wrap another hair tie around it and you’re good to go. A great and quick look.
MESSY MAID BRAID
which is a big trend for autumn/winter 16. Strong cuts and shapes are coming into trend right now: bold bangs, centre partings, and the pixie cut this is a great way to get rid of damaged hair. If you feel it too much of a big change plan to get at least plan to trim off a few inches. After all, split ends are not the best accessory for that first day of school!
Head lice are very small whitish or grey-brown insects that range from the size of a pinhead to the size of a sesame seed. Signs of head lice include: Small white eggs or nits in the hair behind the ears or at back of the neck / An itchy scalp eeling as though something is moving in the hair How to get rid of head lice and nits Treatments are available to buy from pharmacies and supermarkets: • Lotions or sprays that kill head lice – these can be very effective • Removing head lice with a specially designed comb – this is suitable for everyone and relatively inexpensive, but needs to be repeated several times. It is important to carefully follow the instructions that come with the treatment you choose a pharmacist can advise you on the treatments if you’re not sure which is best for you or your child.

BACK TO SCHOOL HAIR
Women who colour their hair should take extra care, bleached hair can go brassy through exposure of the sun, it would be a good idea to bring your colour down a few tones to soften out the colour and to help the hairs condition. Some tips of changing your hair would be to try changing your beach waves for a nice structured cut,
Pull your hair over to one side and make a regular or fishtail braid, secure the braid at the end and pull it around the front of your hairline adding some hair pins to help it stay in place, then secure it with hair pins behind your ear and pull out a few layers to make it look undone.
HALF-UP SIDE ‘DO
Bring the hair back from above the ears and twist that section off to one side. Keep it in place with a hair pins or a fashion accessory, then bring the rest of the hair off to the same side for a casual-cool look.

DUNDONALD STUDENT COMES SECOND IN MAJOR NATIONAL COMPETITION
PICTURED
Belfast Met’ student Matthew Owens who came second in the Adobe Certified Associate World Championship UK & Ireland Final held at Adobe’s EMEA headquarters on 16th June 2016
Matthew Owens, a student on the popular Foundation Degree Interactive Design course offered by Belfast Metropolitan College, was the first and only competitor from the island of Ireland to qualify for the Adobe Certified Associate World Championship UK & Ireland Final held at Adobe’s EMEA headquarters on 16th June 2016.
The Adobe Certified Associate World Championship is a global competition that identifies and honours the next generation of design professionals using Adobe software. The Regional Final brought together the 20 finalists at an event hosted by Adobe UK on June 16, 2016 to determine the UK & Ireland Champion. The 2016 UK & Ireland Champion won the trip of a lifetime (sponsored by Prodigy Learning) to represent the region and compete at the final round of the World Championship in Orlando, Florida. Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) certification demonstrates proficiency in Adobe’s digital communication tools i.e. Creative Cloud. ACA is a prerequisite qualification that students need in order to succeed in the
high demand areas of digital communication and media. The Adobe ACA Championship is now in its fourth year and is open to students who can enter by taking an eligible Adobe ACA exam during the year. The Championship is operated in the UK & Ireland by Prodigy Learning. Matthew completed the qualifying exam as part of his Foundation Degree during a ‘test fest’ hosted by Belfast Met where students were invited to sit the exam and gain a valuable qualification alongside potential qualification for the UK finals. The Garden was funded by the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs. The project was made possible through the contribution of monies raised from the carrier bag levy, known as the Challenge Fund initiative, and with the proactive staff and children of Dundonald Primary school, funding was allocated to create this wonderful garden. The Wildlife Garden has been designed to attract a greater variety of plants and animals into the park by creating important micro-habitats where they can thrive. Tracey Connolly (Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council’s Biodiversity Officer) and Ian Hamilton from the Parks Section helped Mrs McGonigle and her Primary Seven Gardening Club to lead this project to fruition.

#19 AUGUST 2016
HARe + BEAR
ARCTIC HARES & POLAR BEARS By Heidi Wickham
18TH AUGUST 2016 UNTIL 8TH SEPTEMBER
Whalley Fine Art presents this exhibition that encapsulates a new series of works by Heidi Wickham mainly as the title suggests; Arctic Hares and Polar Bears, with a series of other animal related paintings.
T
he “Arctic Hares and Polar Bears” exhibition is a culmination of making drawings that I love, along with the more worrying information concerning the rapid decline of the Arctic ice sheets that these nobel creatures depend on. I have been predominantly a drawer of animals since I was a child. Once I moved to Ireland in 1992 , I was looking for the physical and emotional room to kick start my career in fine art. When my youngest child had started pre school, I started working again, mainly making art in community groups. In 1999 I built a workshop in the garden, and although I was still teaching art, I devoted more time to my own practice. I draw animals because that is what I love. At
one point I had quite a menagerie including dogs, cats, chickens and guinea pigs. I now have just three cats and bees. Like writing , I believe that one should draw what you see. I watched my animals everyday and drew them over and over again until I was so familiar with their shapes , I could allow my line to become looser and more confident. I always had a fascination with bears and the polar regions. I’m a keen hill walker , and have hiked in snow and ice here and abroad. As a charcoal artist, I can stay within the world of monochrome quite comfortably as the medium lends itself to stark contrast , so I love the white of the snow and the beauty of dark outlines of trees or buildings in that landscape.
Although the anatomy of each animal is different, it wasn’t too big a transition to move from cats and hares to bears. It’s the feel of an animal’s bulk or muscle that I attempt to capture. The bears are the most powerful killers on land, but there is something so beautiful about them that I try to translate in a look in the eye or a ragged fur line. I didn’t intend to anthropomorphise them , but once I place in an eye and it looks right back at me , I feel a connection has been made and this drawing is now a portrait. I collect photos of bears I find wherever I can. I use them to start the process, but like all obsessions, the inner motivation takes over and the drawing becomes it’s own unique thing.

A CHAT With Heidi
WHEREABOUTS ARE YOU FROM AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST?
I was born near a place called Abergavenny, in the shadow of The Skirrid in The Black Mountains. We moved a few years later and my childhood was spent in the Surrey village of Windlesham.Having qualified from Bristol Art College, I really started selling work around 2000, nearly 8 years after arriving in Ireland.
WHAT TYPE OF WORK DO YOU LIKE TO PRODUCE AND WHAT IS YOUR PREFERABLE MEDIUM?
I have always preferred using charcoal to make my drawings, it’s not that I don’t like colour, but the basic and rawness of making marks with essentially what is burnt wood, frees me from all the process involved with other mediums. Charcoal is what we used in prehistory. There’s no brush between you on the canvas, I use every part of my hand to draw, pulling the charcoal over the surface and then paring it back using an eraser or tool.

HOW DID YOU START PAINTING POLAR BEARS?
CONTACT WHALLEY FINE ART & FRAMING THE COURTYARD 378A BELMONT ROAD BELFAST BT4 2NF

I really only draw animals. I draw bears because I like the shape of the head and the outline of the body. In polar bears , the heads are quite disproportionate to the body,
I love that. I want to create a sense of bulk and mass with my bears, fully owning the canvas, but still with a benign sadnesses. I never draw them with teeth bared or in any aggressive way. They are the primary hunters on this planet, but I try to make them passive in my work.
WHAT’S YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH WHALLEY FINE ART?
Stephen Whalley approached me two years ago to be one of his gallery artists. He liked the work I was making and so I sent a few pieces to the gallery when he was in Holywood. They proved popular, and so we’ve been steadily working towards a solo show over the last couple of years. I am very happy to have work with Stephen, as I am from the UK , is a connection back to my roots too, dealing in sterling reminds me of home! I’ve lived in county Sligo for 25 years , longer than I’ve lived anywhere, and it’s my favourite place on earth.
HAVE YOU ANY HOBBIES AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
When I’m not making drawings, I volunteer with my local mountain rescue team. I’m ten years in it now, and it provides the perfect antidote to the solitary lifestyle of an artist. Switching to a team mentality, as well as the great exercise, helps me
feel less isolated. It has happened that in the middle of a drawing, I’ve gone to a callout, only to return to the drawing hours later once the rescue has concluded !
HAVE YOU A FAVOURITE ARTWORK YOU CAN REMEMBER PAINTING?
Many years ago , I made a drawing of a cow. It was a turning point in both confidence and technique. Even though I have made better drawings since, I won’t forget that one.
DO YOU COLLECT ART YOURSELF AND WHAT TYPE OF WORK DO YOU LIKE?
We collect local artists work , and often will get something small whilst travelling. Our walls are covered with other people’s art ! I love drawings of course, but a picture just has to have the right feeling. If you’ve ever caught the eye of someone over a crowded pub, you’ll know what I mean.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
The future is bright. I am having a new studio built this summer and the hares, bears and such will continue to bewitch me. Later this year I’m having a solo in Sligo based on beekeeping. I am on the cairde festival team and we stage an open submissions art show each year which takes a lot of time and effort , and training continues with the rescue team of course

ART IN THE EASTSIDE
SYMPOSIUM
T
his is the Art in The Eastside project and is the brainchild of Creative Exchange Artists’ Studios who have delivered five similar billboard projects since 2009. The project presents art in a high profile setting - placing works of art at traffic junctions and along busy roads. This creates an outdoor gallery, bringing art to the locality and adding a splash of colour to our streets. It is a vibrant outdoor art project and the only one of its kind to be delivered in Northern Ireland Art in the Eastside is a key visual arts event in the Eastside Arts Festival 2016 and Creative Exchange’s 20/20 project happening throughout August. As this year Creative Exchange celebrate 20 years as an arts organisation in East Belfast, 20 original artworks from renowned local, national and International artists will be displayed on the billboards. The project will be a celebration of the artists who have been involved with Creative Exchange over the past 20 years. While some of the artwork is purely abstract other images relate to issues surrounding social justice, recent politics, local culture, feminism, and domestic narratives. 4 additional billboards will be dedicated to local groups who worked with artists Lesley Cherry & Deirdre Robb at the ‘Wish’ workshops which encouraged participants to look for a positive future for East Belfast. Participating artists are; Gerry Gleason, Shiro Masuyama, Victor Sloan, Peter Richards, Jill Quigley, Colin Darke, Martin Boyle, Emmanuele Panzarini, Ted Pim, Colin McGookin, Zan Dani, Deirdre Robb, Paul Moore, Susan Gorsen, Lesley Cherry, Stephen Millar, Ray Duncan, George Robb, Tom Phanerstill and David Fox.
Another element of the 20th anniversary celebrations will be a Symposium titled ‘The Real Cost of Regeneration’ which will be held on Thursday 18th August at the Engine Room space, Portview Trade Centre. The aim of this event is to encourage debate and discussion around arts regeneration within our city especially in East Belfast. Due to low rents and the availability of large buildings, artists and cultural initiatives often populate areas which once thrived with industry but are now considered economically deprived. The impact of this often leads to gentrification, and the development of many new communities within the area. However there are many pro’s and cons to this model which the symposium hopes to highlight. The Symposium will include a panel discussion, open debate and a series of short presentations/workshops. The panel of experts consists of Maurice Kinkead, Chief Executive of Eastside Partnership, Architect Michael Corr, Director of PLACE, Katy Radford, Project Manager & Senior Researcher Institute for Conflict Research and Noel Kelly Chief Executive Visual Artists Ireland. Creative Exchange member Lesley Cherry will chair the panel. Lunch will be served from 12 to 12.30, event runs 1pm -3pm. This symposium is free to attend and open to all but it is necessary to RSVP by emailing creativeexchangeartists@gmail.com. To end the 20th birthday celebrations on Saturday 20th August Peter Richards Director of Golden Thread Gallery will chair a conversation with a selection of artists from the 20/20 exhibition alongside exhibition Curator Sarah McAvera. Afterwards performance collective beyond will hold one of their Performance Art events in the space.

Throughout her career, she has garnered numerous awards, including the 2016 Golden Fleece Award (hosted by the Lilias Mitchell Foundation); Clare Morris Open Exhibition Adjudicators Award, and the RHA Annual Exhibition Keating/McLaughlin award. She is a member of the prestigious Royal Ulster Academy of the Arts, and her work is held in numerous public and private collections. However, her recent claim to fame came in 2012, when the writer E.L. James featured Jennifer’s work in her publishing phenomenon Fifty Shades of Grey. The unexpected association with the New York Times best-seller raised her profile internationally and was the inspiration for the creation of a new limited-edition piece of print work.

Occupying two floors, a monthly themed exhibition programme has been scheduled for the first floor, while the ground floor is arranged Salon Style, with the intent of displaying as many amazing artists as possible. The gallery has a friendly and fuss-free atmosphere and the owners, Ann and Ken Bartley, would welcome people to pop in to see the works for themselves. ‘There’s no hard sell in this gallery’, says Ann. ‘Art is such a personal choice, and I truly believe that you have to love an artwork before you buy it. But not everyone is aware of the huge range of styles available, so we would love people to come in for a browse, and maybe experience something they haven’t seen before.

EAST BELFAST M&S EMPLOYEES SET TO MAKE THEIR MARK FOR ACTION CANCER
M&S EMPLOYEES FROM 18 STORES ACROSS THE PROVINCE, THEIR FAMILY AND FRIENDS, ARE TAKING PART IN MANY NOVEL FUNDRAISING EVENTS INCLUDING A ‘GRAN FUNDO’ EVENT AT THE M&S NEWTOWNBREDA STORE AT FORESTSIDE SHOPPING CENTRE WHICH WILL INCLUDE A CYCLE CHALLENGE AS WELL AS A SPONSORED WALK.
M&S employees are making their mark this summer as they support M&S Northern Ireland’s charity fundraising campaign, with the aim of raising £100,000 for Action Cancer’s counselling and therapeutic services. Customers too can get involved in the many fundraising activities being organised in support of the campaign, including a ballot to win an A Class Mercedes car, sponsored walks, in-store sponsored cyclothons and exercise classes, bag packing and kids’ entertainment. Speaking about the challenge, Ryan Lemon, Head of Region for M&S in Northern Ireland
said: “I’m delighted to be joining so many employees in getting involved in this summer’s charity challenge. Whether it’s planning fundraising in-store, or sponsoring participants, there is a chance for staff and customers alike to be involved.” Dougie King, Head of Fundraising and Communication at Action Cancer added: “Currently there are 63,000 people living with a cancer diagnosis in the North. By 2030 100,000 people in Northern Ireland will be living with a cancer diagnosis, which means that Action Cancer continues to develop and expand its counselling and complementary therapy

STARBUCKS TO OPEN
BARCLAYS ‘CLIMB EVEREST’ EVENT RAISES OVER £8,000 FOR FRIENDS OF THE CANCER CENTRE
NORTHERN IRELAND’S FIRST DRIVE-THROUGH STORE AT CONNSWATER Connswater has signed a deal with global coffee house chain Starbucks that will see the company open its first ever drive-through store in Northern Ireland, the retail scheme’s owners Killultagh Estates announce.
C
onnswater has signed a deal with global coffee house chain Starbucks that will see the company open its first ever drivethrough store in Northern Ireland, the retail scheme’s owners Killultagh Estates announced today. Starbucks has confirmed that it will open a 3,300 sq. ft. store in the east Belfast retail park before the end of this year, with construction expected to begin in early October, subject to planning permission being granted. The news comes as Killultagh confirmed that it intends to invest £200,000 in a transformational landscaping project which will result in significant improvements being made to the connectivity from the Retail Park to the Shopping Centre in conjunction with the Belfast City Council’s Greenway Project. The landscaping project, which is also subject to planning approval, is due to be completed by January 2017. Its completion will coincide with the opening of grocery retailer Lidl’s multi-million pound expansion at its store in Connswater, which is also scheduled to open in late January. Laura McCarthy, asset manager for Killultagh, said: “The decision by Starbucks to choose Connswater as its first location in Northern Ireland for a drive-through store demonstrates the
services free of charge, at Action Cancer House and at 11 locations in the community across Northern Ireland. “A cancer diagnosis affects the whole family, and so included in our services is counselling for children as young as 5 years old, sometimes using art therapy, as well as other interventions provided by our professional team. We are very appreciative of the fundraising and awareness raising support of M&S staff and customers, because it enables us to support even more families impacted by a cancer diagnosis, in the weeks and months to come.”
RYAN KEE, DIRECTOR OF RETAIL AGENCY AT LAMBERT SMITH HAMPTON, AND GERRY MONAGHAN, MANAGER OF CONNSWATER SHOPPING CENTRE AND RETAIL PARK
confidence that retailers have in the scheme and its strategic location in east Belfast. We are also looking forward to the opening of Lidl’s new 23,000 sq. ft. expanded store early in the New Year. With such positive activity taking place we believe that now is the right time to invest in the wider project and to connect our Centre to the work that Belfast City Council is doing as part of the Connswater Community Greenway, with a new urban walk way and pedestrian crossing. We are always striving to improve the shopping experience for our customers and this project will play an important role in that.” Ryan Kee, director of retail agency at Lambert Smith Hampton who acted on behalf of the landlord on the Starbucks transaction, said: “Today’s announcement will no doubt be welcomed by Connswater customers and the surrounding catchment. It is an exciting development for the scheme and we anticipate that this activity will act as a catalyst to attract other multinationals to consider Connswater and the potential that it represents. We are already in advanced negotiations with a number of well-known retailers for positions in the scheme and we look forward to further deal announcements in the coming months.”
A team of 11 colleagues from Barclays has raised over £8,000 (£8,388.75) for Friends of the Cancer Centre by running up Stormont hill in East Belfast recently a grueling 181 times. They completed the challenge, which in terms of distance is equivalent to the vertical ascent required to conquer Mount Everest from sea level, 8,848 metres, in just less than 6 hours. Friends of the Cancer Centre, which is based at Belfast City Hospital, has been funding life-saving and life-changing projects for over 30 years. In the last year alone, Friends of the Cancer Centre has put nearly £1.4 million back into the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre.

AROUND THE PRE SEASON TRAINING JUST where did the summer go? Or should we say where was the summer? It seems no time since all those end of season dinners, but on Saturday 13th August , its back to ‘porridge’ for our local Intermediate Clubs, as they kick off the new season – apart from Glentoran, who of course started their campaign one week earlier. It’s therefore perhaps time to have a quick look at the various comings and goings over the close season. For Glentoran in the Danske Irish Premiership, Harland and Wolff Welders in the Championship and Dundela in the new Premier Intermediate League, there is of course the transfer window, in that any further comings will need to be in the coming weeks, but there is no such restriction, not until March 2017 anyway, for some of our Northern Amateur League clubs. HARLAND and WOLFF WELDERS Not a lot of movement at Harland and Wolff Welders, where two of the three new signings are goalkeepers, after Michael Dougherty opted to join Crusaders and Tony Galbraith left for Lisburn Distillery. There should be goals, though, from new acquisition from Ards, Danny McKee who helped himself to five in Saturday’s 11-1 friendly romp at Holywood FC. The Welders, too, face two trips to Drumahoe to meet Institute in the coming weeks, in the Championship and then in the League Cup; the Shipyardmen having come out of the hat first but had to forgo home advantage with Tillysburn Park not having floodlights. Players In; Samuel Johnston, Goalkeeper, Linfield; Stephen McClelland, Goalkeeper, Mossley FC; Danny McKee, Striker, Ards.Player Out; Michael Dougherty, Goalkeeper, Crusaders; Tony Galbraith, Goalkeeper, Lisburn Distillery. Opening Fixtures; Saturday 13th August – Dergview (h) Saturday 20th August – Institute (a) Saturday 28th August – PSNI (h) Tuesday 30th August – Institute (a), League Cup DUNDELA Dundela almost dropped out of the third tier, leaving it just a little close for comfort last term, and thus it’s not real surprise that managers Stephen Gourley and David Murphy have been seeking new recruits during the summer. The most notable new signing is the return of Ben Roy, who was scoring goals in the Premier Division for Carrick Rangers last season, having left the Duns a few years ago to go to Ards. Another new boy with Premiership experience is Matthew Ferguson, son of Glenn the former Ballymena United manager. Also in is ex Ards midfielder Ben Browne. James Sofley, too, on loan from Ards last season, is now a permanent signed up Dundela player, although the Duns have lost TJ Murray, also a valuable ‘loan ranger’ last term, who is back in the Premier Division, on loan, with Carrick Rangers.

Joint manager Stephen Gourley is happy with his squad, as he told the Loop, “Getting Ben Roy back was a big signing, it showed players that we really meant business. I’m happy enough with the squad, though we could maybe do with maybe getting another two or three in – but again, it’s all very well having the players here, it’s what they do out on the pitch that counts!”. Jamie Jackson, however, is back in training but is still a few weeks away from full fitness. Players In; Ben Roy, Striker, Carrick Rangers; Lewis Roy, Defender, Grove United; Matthew Ferguson, Midfielder, Ballymena United; Ben Browne, Midfielder, Ards; James Sofley, Striker; Thomas Healy, Defender/Midfielder, Ards (on loan); Ryan Leitch, Midfielder. Curtis Brown, Defender; Jordan Morrison, Defender, Dunmurry Rec; Jordan Clarke, Midfielder/Striker, Nortel. Opening Fixtures; Saturday 13th August; Donegal Celtic (h) Saturday 27th August; Abbey Villa (a), Steel and Sons Cup Tuesday 30th August; Ballinamallard United (a) League Cup. EAST BELFAST East Belfast have largely retained the squad that came so close last season, being squeezed into third place in 1a after losing their final game against Lisburn Rangers. East, too, organised a successful four team Festival of Football tournament, won by Glentoran. Players In; Nathan Coulter, Defender, Dunmurry Rec; Taylor Evans, Midfielder, Lisburn Distillery; Craig Campbell, Striker, Ards Rangers; Justin Nicholl, Midfielder, ex Alloa Athletic. Last Season; 3rd in 1aPlayers Out; Dean Cousins, Orangefield OB; Warren Pinkerton, Ards Rangers. A WINNING START FOR THE GLENS AS NOVO MAKES COMPETITIVE DEBUT
GLENTORAN got their campaign off to a winning start with a one goal success over Dungannon Swifts at the Oval; a game that will be remembered more for Nacho Novo’s competitive debut, off the bench, rather than the entertainment served up. It might have been Nacho’s baptism, but for skipper Elliott Morris, it was appearance number 615, playing this time behind a back three of Calum Birney, Jonny Addis and Marcus Kane as a back three. The middle third consisted of Aaron Smyth, Ciaran Caldwell, Eric Foley, Aaron Harmon and Ross Redman, whilst leading the line up front were Jonny Smith and Stephen O’Flynn. The Glens made a promising enough start and after just two minutes, Ciaran Caldwell was brought down just outside the box. Up stepped new recruit Eric Foley
but his free kick sailed into the side netting.Dungannon responded and had a chance eight minutes later, only Ryan Harpur’s effort didn’t trouble keeper Morris. That apart, Glentoran were looking the more likely, without exactly sending the pulses racing. Jonny Smith hoisted one over on 19 minutes, and then had a half chance on the edge of the box, but Swifts netminder Andy Coleman saved comfortably. Foley went close again with a well struck effort that flashed wide of the left hand upright, before a fine move down the left involving
Ross Redman, Aaron Harmon and Smith finished with ex Carrick Rangers blazing the ball horribly high and wide of the target. On the half hour, the impressive Redman swung over a teasing cross which just eluded the Glens front line. Then, from the other side, an Aaron Smyth cross was met by Smith but the forward couldn’t quite get enough purchase onto the header and Coleman gathered easily. Then just before the break, Birney couldn’t direct his header onto the target, after climbing to meet a Smith corner. The second session, alas, appeared to be following the same template, with Dungannon looking content to sit back and allow Glentoran a territorial edge. The two ‘Smiths’ combined but Jonny’s shot, from Aaron’s cross, was blocked by the Swifts defence. The Glens did have the ball in the net on 49 minutes, only Smith was ruled offside as he finished off a Caldwell cross. Caldwell, too, screwed one well wide of the left hand post. On 66 minutes, manager Kernaghan at least unleashed Novo, on for
SIROCCO WORKS Apart from the appointment of Tommy Kincaid as the new manager, the big news from the Sirocco Works is that the new refurbished Dixon Park is finally officially open. Glentoran doing the honours in what was a soggy baptism; the rain, and the goals were pelting down, with the Glens running out 8-0 winners So maybe not the weather, or the scoreline, Sirocco might have liked but they will be well pleased with the impressive turnout, especially on such a wet night, many of them there to catch a first glimpse of Nacho Novo, the marquee signing Glentoran made the previous day.. Last Season; 7th in 1c Players In: Lewis Irwin, Striker, Bloomfield; Nathan Duffy, Midfielder, Dundonald; Neil McLarnon, Striker, ex Lisburn Distillery. young Smith and just two minutes later, a left wing corner from the ex Glasgow Ranger posed problems but the visitors managed to clear the ball out for another corner. The stalemate was finally broken on 73 minutes; O’Flynn knocking down Foley’s raking pass for Caldwell to lash high into the roof of the net. Six minutes later, Redman again made ground down the left, releasing Foley who set up O’Flynn but keeper Coleman was alert to the danger. Dungannon, with nothing to lose, gradually came out of their shell and it took a handy clearance from Harmon, as Jarlath O’Rourke knocked the ball into the Glentoran box. On 89 minutes, there was a glimpse of Novo’s class as he bamboozled a defender down near the bottom right hand corner, but his flighted effort sailed just wide of the far post. Then, into stoppage time, Novo seized onto a long punt from Morris, but his shot fizzed well wide of the right hand post.
