STARLINGS FLOCK TO NEW BRIDGES FAMILY PRACTICE T

he facility, originally called Bryson Street Surgery, located on an interface, at the corner of Bryson Street and Newtownards Road, was in danger of being closed or relocated because it was in such a poor state. Closing the surgery, with high levels of health inequalities in the area, would have been disastrous for the local community who rely on it. Thankfully the facility has been reinvigorated, thanks to significant funding, and will positively impact on patients and local residents. The practice now has: interview and treatment rooms, children’s play and waiting area, facilities and access for wheelchair users and minor surgery capabilities. East Belfast residents will recognise that the

artwork entitled ‘Starlings.’ Welcoming the redevelopment of Bridges Family Practice on behalf of the GPs who occupy the building, Dr Christine Hunter said: “We are very happy to be back on the old site in this fantastic new state of the art facility. We are committed to continuing to deliver a very high standard of service to everyone in the community. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Landmark East for their dedication and support for the project, Hall Black Douglas for their commitment and attention to detail when designing the building and Deirdre Robb for the beautiful artwork”. Maurice Kinkead, Chief Executive of Landmark East commented: “The aim

new building has retained one feature - its unique, curved wall. In order to maximize the visual impact of the wall EastSide Partnership, Landmark East’s parent company, secured £15,000 funding through the Northern Ireland Executive’s Urban Villages Initiative to commission a piece of art for the wall. The Department for Communities assisted in the administration of the procurement of an artist, design and construction of the artwork. Deirdre Robb, an artist from local visual art collective Creative Exchange Artists Studio, was selected to design an artwork to make a visual impact. of Landmark East is to contribute to the physical regeneration of east Belfast by buying run- down or derelict properties in disadvantaged areas and bringing them back into use. Bryson Street Surgery was in desperate need of re-development and was a critical project for Landmark East to become involved with. We are delighted that we were able to secure the funding and redevelop the Bridges Family Practice, ensuring a vital community asset, shared space and necessary facility was improved and retained for the people of east Belfast. We are also delighted that Deirdre Robb has created such a wonderful piece of artwork; something for everyone in the local community to enjoy for years to come.”

I was delighted to be selected to create artwork for the new Bridges Family Practice. The starling murmuration is like a community working together and that resonated with me when thinking about the Practice, a place where the community comes together in shared space. Starlings fly together in unison for a number of reasons for safety in numbers, to keep warm and exchange information – in a sense they form and protect their community. Community cohesion is an important part of this new building and the notion of the starlings working together can further reinforce this notion”.

Bridges Family Practice on Newtownards Road in Belfast has undergone a major redevelopment to become a state of the art facility thanks to £1 million funding secured by Landmark East from The Northern Ireland Executive’s Social Investment Fund. A vital community asset, Landmark East celebrated the completion of the building today and launched ‘Starlings’, a specially commissioned artwork for the building.

04 Helping Hands Charity Challenge

Asda Dundonald Community Champion Sharon McBratney has helped to raise much needed funds for local Autism and Aspergers support group - Helping Hands. Helping Hands Autism Support Group was formed in 2008 by parents who wanted to build a better future for their children, who had a diagnosis of Autism and Aspergers syndrome.

haron joined Helping Hands Chairperson Caroline Birch and Debbie Scott, a local mum and supporter of the charity, for a sponsored 24 hour sit-out outside Asda Dundonald. Organised and managed entirely by volunteers, Helping Hands supports the families of children affected by Autism and Aspergers Syndrome with activity clubs and advice sessions. This is the second time Asda has supported the charity sit out – which raised over £1500 last year. Sharon said, “The support Helping Hands gives local families is really important so I was delighted to help with this year’s 24 hour sit-out. The encouragement we were given

from Asda customers, colleagues and Helping Hands volunteers kept us going no matter what the weather. Here’s to another successful sit out!” Caroline from Helping Hands commented, “We are really grateful to Sharon and all the members of the general public who have supported our organisation through this event. Helping Hands currently helps over 135 local families, and we want to expand on this number as we move to our new site in Dundonald. The money raised from the sit-out will go towards vital building work on the centre, and help us offer new services, such as summer programmes and respite sessions.”

rmy Reserve officers and soldiers from 206 (Ulster) Battery, Royal Artillery based at Coleraine and Newtownards had the honour of firing the celebratory traditional 21 Gun Royal Salute, a tribute echoed at similar events in London, Cardiff and Edinburgh. Today Gun Salutes mark special, usually Royal, occasions, but the ceremony originated when the firing of a cannon as a Salute indicated the friendly intent of an empty chamber and Gun Salutes were fired, both on land and at sea, as a sign of respect and welcome. This month Defence Relationship Management which works through the Reserve Forces & Cadets Association in Northern Ireland to support the relationship between employers and Reservists invited guests from the worlds of business, medicine and education to enjoy the occasion. Regional Employer Engagement Director, Athene Gordon, said, “The Royal Salute is a

wonderful demonstration of the high standards of military skills which are a trademark of our Reserve Forces, but we were eager also to tell employers about the vast array of independentlyaccredited training currently available to Reservists. In a great many cases such training is of direct relevance to civilian employers and its monetary value is well understood by them. Employers are also quick to appreciate the value which a highly focused, self-motivated, physically fit Reservist can bring to the civilian workplace. The valuable support which many employers already give to Reservists is genuinely appreciated and we continue to work with employers to develop mutually beneficial partnerships. In addition to giving general advice on responsibilities and benefits, we can assist employers to develop Reservist HR policies and are happy to look at ways in which we can tailor opportunities for employers to meet their goals.”

Could Titanic Belfast Be the Best Attraction in Europe? Titanic Belfast has been nominated alongside Buckingham Palace, La Sagrada Familia, The Eiffel Tower and The Roman Colosseum to become Europe’s Leading Visitor Attraction at the World Travel Awards.

The world’s largest Titanic visitor experience has been nominated in the prestigious awards, which have been nicknamed the ‘Tourism Oscars’. It is the first time an attraction in Northern Ireland has been nominated in the awards 23 year history. It is now competing for the top spot in Europe against the following leading attractions - the Acropolis, Athens, Buckingham Palace, England, Guinness Storehouse, Dublin, La Sagrada Familia, Spain, Ribeira do Porto, Portugal, The Eiffel Tower, France and The Roman Colosseum, Italy. To prove that Northern Ireland is home to Europe’s leading tourist attraction, the iconic Titanic Belfast needs local support. Since opening in 2012, Titanic Belfast has established itself as a world-class attraction on the local, national and international stage, having welcomed over 2.8 million visitors. It was recently included in Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Travelist of 500 of the world’s most striking locations, featuring everything from imposing temples to hidden gems, after only three years in operation and was named the ninth best rated museum in the UK Travellers’ Choice™ awards, announced by TripAdvisor. #18 / JULY 2016 / AWARDS FOR ALL

East Belfast Area Groups Share In Grants Boost From Awards For All Young parents in east Belfast have better support and training, thanks to a grant from Big Lottery Fund. East Belfast Area Youth Project has received a £10,000 grant from Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme. It is part of a Big Lottery Fund grants roll out of £693,133 to 82 groups across Northern Ireland. (See separate attachment for a full list of awards) including four groups in the east Belfast area sharing in a total of £30,992 from Awards for All.

E

ast Belfast Area Youth Project works with young people under 25 in inner east Belfast. It is using the £10,000 to provide parenting classes, accredited training courses with childcare and a weekend residential for young mothers. Kimberly Hewitt, 22, from the Newtownards Road area has three young children. She was introduced to the East Belfast Youth Project group in Walkway Community Centre by a close friend who said it would be a great help to her. “A lot of mothers and toddlers groups are hard for young mums to go to because sometimes the mums seem to be doing well, have their own houses,

and supportive partners. Young mothers who are on their own and are struggling have different needs and need to be around others who understand. “The East Belfast Youth Project group has been incredible for my children and myself emotionally, mentally and socially. It is an incredibly supportive outlet for problems I am facing as a young mother. The group is also giving me the opportunity to build myself up and develop new skills and gain qualifications.” Kimberley is currently doing a degree in health and social care at the Open University. She said she could never

have started without the support of the group and the confidence the personal development courses have given her. “Through the Youth Project I did Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, many personal development courses to help me cope with depression and I’m currently in a parenting course which is brilliant. I couldn’t have started this degree without the group, and the support and encouragement the group leaders have given me. They are the ones who advised me to go ahead and do it now rather than waiting until I’m older. This way. I’ll be finished and able to start working by the time I’m 25 rather than in my 30s.

MORE LOCAL RECIPIENTS

“I know that everything shared is confidential and I trust that within the group. One of the reasons this group is so important to me is because of the past problems I have faced, the main one being when I lost my first and very young nephew to cancer five years ago. “At that time I seemed lost in relation to my friends. I left school, failed many important exams and most importantly, I lost a lot of friends. Now through the group, I feel I finally have people I can count on again and I am building lasting friendships. The group also gives my children the boost to play with other children and come out of their shell. It’s making them more confident as well.”

JOANNE MCDOWELL, BIG LOTTERY FUND NI DIRECTOR:

STRAND ARTS CENTRE Aims to restore the Strand and enable the development of high quality, sustainable creative arts space. They are using the £10,000 to provide a cross-community digital media project for young people including programmes in film making, DJ skills, and PR and photography, to promote good relations. EASY COME EASY SEW COMMUNITY GROUP The east Belfast group promotes skills sharing in crafts, including crocheting, knitting and paper crafts. The project is using a

£1,567 grant to run activities to improve members’ skills and buy new materials and equipment. INVERARY COMMUNITY CENTRE COMMITTEE Provides a service for people in the Inverary area of east Belfast. They are using the £9,425 to provide a range of programmes for all ages in the local community including a volunteer development programme, a youth summer scheme, a Parent and toddler summer trip, a senior’s programme and a youth café.

The Big Lottery Fund’s NI Awards for All programme funds health, education, environment and community projects that help people bring about positive change in their lives, improve health and well-being, develop skills and create safer communities. The application process is simple and accessible and shall remain so, making it easy for applicants to successfully apply for small pots of funding that can have such a big impact on local communities and lives.”

EAST BELFAST WOMAN RUNS 10 HALF MARATHONS IN 100 DAYS FOR CHARITY

Big-hearted east Belfast woman Gillian Logan is clocking up a huge number of miles for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland. Gillian (32) aims to complete ten half marathons in 100 days to raise an amazing £1,500 to help local cancer patients and their families. The energetic IT expert took up running six years ago, and hasn’t stopped since, continuing to increase her distances and the number of races she takes part in. She decided she would like to put all her efforts to good use by raising funds for charity at the same time.

A member of Orangegrove Athletics Club, Gillian has already completed three of her challenges – Lisburn, EAMS Knockathon Greenisland and Ards half marathons. The next is on July 23 at Dervock. She is also taking part in runs in Cookstown, Kells and Connor (near Ballymena), Dublin, Groomsport and Kilkeel. Her grand finale is the Great North Run in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on the 100th day of her challenge on September 11. “I have five weeks of one race a week, and there is one weekend when I have two back-to-back on Saturday and Sunday, which will be hard work and I’ll really have to gear up for that,” she laughed. “It has always been my ambition to run the Great North run for charity and I’m particularly delighted to be doing it to raise funds for Cancer Focus NI. It will be a brilliant way to end my challenge. Cancer is such a common disease with one in three people developing it in their lifetime. I feel it’s so important to help those who are going through such a difficult time in their lives, to educate people about how to lower their risk of cancer and also to fund new research, all of which Cancer Focus NI does. My grandmother was a breast cancer survivor, so I’m very conscious of the importance of finding better ways of diagnosing the disease and developing new treatments. I’m really enjoying my challenge – it’s a fantastic feeling to be able to use your hobby to help other people.” Gillian is covering all her costs for travel, accommodation and entry fees herself so that every penny that’s donated goes to Cancer Focus NI and would like to thank everyone for their donations so far. Anyone who would like to make a donation to Gillian’s challenge, please visit www.justgiving.com/Gillian-Logan3

This is the first-time an exhibition from the American Museum of Natural History, which has been described by the New York Times as “engrossing”, has visited the UK and Ireland. The word-class exhibition in Titanic Belfast’s Andrews Gallery, from 25th June to 28th August, is a must-see for kids, parents and explorer enthusiasts alike to learn about the most stirring account of Antarctic exploration of all time – Scott versus Amundsen. Through a series of interactive, multimedia experiences, hands on activities and life-size recreations, the world-class exhibit explores the ‘Race to the End of the Earth’ by two teams with one goal. Visitors for

the first time will be brought back in time to follow in the footsteps of Norway’s Amundsen and Britain’s Scott as they embark on a 1,800-mile journey to be the first to reach the South Pole, showing what life was like for the explorers on the ice 100 years ago as they faced not only the ultimate limits of human endurance but some of the harshest weather conditions in the world, as well of the risk of starvation and frostbite. Race to the End of the Earth is organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York (www.amnh.org), in collaboration with Musée des Confluences, Lyon, France, and Royal BC Museum, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

STUDENT OPTS FOR SPECSAVERS CONNSWATER

T

PICTURED Connswater store director, Lynsey Caldwell, with Cormac McKiernan

Cormac McKiernan, a 21 year old student from North Belfast has just completed his second year of optometry at Ulster University in Coleraine and is now looking forward to a summer spent in Specsavers Connswater getting hands-on experience.

his is the second summer that Cormac will spend in Specsavers Connswater. “In my first year at University we all had our eyes tested by the third year students. By coincidence the student who tested me was the sister of Paula Cunningham, the store director of Specsavers Connswater. She suggested I apply for a summer placement and I have had a part-time contract here ever since. Following a period of work shadowing, the Specsavers team introduced me to a range of specific tasks, provided me with detailed training in each and then allowed me to ‘fly solo’. I can now do all the pre-screening tests such as taking eye pressures and the fundus photos as well as dispensing single and multi-focal lenses. All my family work in some aspect of healthcare and I have always been drawn to optometry which has an interesting mix of health and business elements.

It is fascinating how eye health can impact or provide information about many other aspects of a person’s wellbeing from indiacating conditions such as high blood pressure to diagnosing more life-changing conditions like diabetes. I also like the way that whilst Specsavers is a global brand, the ownership and management of each store is local which makes the business so much more personal.” Lynsey Caldwell, store director, Specsavers Connswater, said, “We are always very keen to have an optometry student in-store. It’s not only a good way for us to invest practically in our profession but it’s also an excellent means of finding out who would be best suited as future employees. I am delighted that Cormac will be joining us once he graduates next summer for his pre-reg year and hopefully the beginning of a long career in optometry within Specsavers.”

Claire O’Prey from Lifeline said: “Sometimes the first call is difficult to make and we want to highlight, that if you are worried about a family member or friend, you can call Lifeline on their behalf. Our counsellors will support you to support the person in distress as sometimes we can be too polite, thinking we are intruding by noticing a loved may not be coping with a challenge they are facing. Lifeline can also arrange for follow up outreach providing direct help to loved one you are concerned for. We are particularly keen to encourage mothers, sisters, wives and girlfriends to support the men in their lives who may be experiencing a crisis, to call Lifeline, as sometimes men find it more difficult to reach out for help. Claire also added: “Often we don’t recognise mood changes as risk factors for self-harm or suicide. Depression, anxiety and behaviour changes, including sleep problems, irritability and isolation are known suicide risk factors. We would like raise awareness about the signs to look out for and to encourage people to call Lifeline if concerned about themselves or someone else. There is a common perception you have to wait until distress reaches a certain tipping point before calling Lifeline – we would encourage anyone experiencing distress or despair to call, you are not alone.” Lifeline is free to call from all landlines and mobiles, please put the number into your phone today and have it saved for when you or a friend may need it in the future. About New Life Counselling Northern Ireland has the highest suicide rate in the UK, according to the Office of National Statistics. Research suggests the main reasons for the disturbing trend are social deprivation and the violent legacy of The Troubles. New Life Counselling has also found that its services are more in need than ever as its clients come under increased financial pressure. Launched 23 years ago, New Life Counselling’s mission is to support people to achieve their personal potential through professional counselling and therapeutic services. The National Lottery grant funded a Project Co-ordinator to focus on teenagers and young adults. The one-to-one counselling provided support to those at risk of, or engaged in, self-harming and suicidal thoughts.

Holywood Arches•July 2016

THE ARCHES TRADERS NOW & THEN Our phenomenal resident historian Aidan Campbell has delved deep into his remarkable archives as we take a look back at the Holywood Arches and its surrounding areas compared with today. You‘ll spot some familiar names and traders in amongst the images. The Way It Was

Thomas Jackson established a shoe repair business at 436 Newtownards Road very near the Holywood Arches in 1907. In those days footwear was handmade by craftsmen and made to last. By 1930 his son Francis (in the doorway) had taken over the business and lived in the upstairs apartment with his wife Dolly and their four children. The window sign says ‘Motor Car for Hire’.

For many it is hard to imagine how “The Arches” looked way back then. A long standing land Francis was atoday, keen bowler and Vice-President of Strand Club which was mark and a still very much a by word for location and directions this is how theBowling Holywood based at Victoria Park (see Sydenham p.161). Arches looked in 1957. This photograph is from an edition of the Belfast News-Letter with the headline: ‘Holywood Arches to go.’ The article explained that this well-known landmark had been constructed in 1849 with the first train passing on the Belfast – Comber line in 1850 when it was opened to the public. The decks of the bridge were to be removed. The two bridges formerly carried the main Belfast and County Down Railway line over the Holywood Road and the Upper Newtownards Road. Negotiations were apparently continuing between the U.T.A. and Belfast Corporation over the possibility of converting the railway track into a by-pass road. Some trolleybus overhead wiring is still visible and the service was finally withdrawn in this area of East Belfast by 1963. (see Cherryvalley p.79) (Courtesy of Frank Jackson)

Now number 436 is home to the office of family business Loop Print & Design.

Looking Back Down The Road

Wee Buns

Another view of the Holywood Arches which on this occasion looks towards Belfast from the Upper Newtownards Road. It is probably some time in the mid-1960s as there are no trolleybus overhead wires, and the three cars closest the camera are Mark 1 Ford Cortina’s which were manufactured 1962-1966. The railway bridge pillars are in the process of demolition to widen the road at a point where there was a well-known traffic bottleneck.

In 1918 Bloomfield Bakery was located at 379-383 Newtownards Road between East Bread Street and Bloomfield Avenue. Along with several other local bakeries, Bloomfield Bakery was acquired by Inglis & Co, in the mid- 1900s. The bakery was converted into a biscuit factory. Here is deliveryman John McCrea in 1920. He drove a team of horses and his daily route involved a trip over the Craigantlet Hills to Newtownards.

Trolley Good Show

A Different Time

The Holywood Arches had been removed by the time this photograph was taken, probably in the late 1950s. The Daimler bus towards the Upper Newtownards Road was apparently purchased from London Transport as part of the tram replacement project. There is quite a network of trolleybus overhead cables in sight and they would remain until the early 1960s. Electric street lighting had not yet reached this area of Belfast.

The Belfast Street Directory for 1910 tells us that the street to the immediate left is Madison Avenue, which directly faces Grampian Street. Alongside is 50 Holywood Road, occupied by W. & A. Gilbey Ltd, wine merchant which is next to 52, the premises of furniture dealer, W. Fisher. Then a row of two houses leads to Parkgate Avenue, behind the ‘Standard Red’ electric tram. The shop of chemist Horatio Todd was at 72 Holywood Road. Notice Prout’s billboard to the far right.

Medicinal Purposes

Stage & Screen

Horatio Todd established his pharmacy at 72 Holywood Road in 1906 which was described in David Bleakely’s book ‘C.S. Lewis – at Home in Ireland’ as ‘more than a chemist’s shop’. His range of preparations included perfumes, pills, stomach powders, cough mixtures, ointments, tonics and animal remedies. He lived at Sandown Road and kept a pony in a stable at the rear of his premises. It was said that when he opened his premises on the edge of town that he could see green fields from the front door.

The Strand cinema at 152-154 Holywood Road now occupies the site of Strandtown House gatelodge. It is the only cinema in Belfast which has survived from the Second World War. Opened on 7th December 1935 with a seating capacity of 1,170 the design was influenced by its proximity to the nearby shipyard of Harland & Wolff, featuring curved walls and a port holed foyer. The film on release was ‘Girls at Sea’, a British comedy starring Ronald Shiner in 1958.

THE AMAZING WORLD OF DOG WORMS

Expert Advice Local Vet

PICTURED

Patrick McKee BVetMed BSc MRCVS

As a dog owner, you probably know you should give your dog worming tablets. But I think it pays to know a little bit about the parasites we call worms, so you’re properly informed to protect your dog. HOW WORMS SPREAD Dog worms are like transformers, with each species having two distinct forms: The adult worm, which looks very “worm-like” lives in the dog, sucking blood from the gut wall. The juvenile stage of the worm (called larvae) generally live in another species for example a sheep, slug, insect or even human. Almost all worms live out these two stages of their life cycle. THIS IS HOW IT HAPPENS Dogs get worms by eating an animal whose organs contain the larvae. In the wild, the dog might eat a rabbit or sheep, our pets routinely pick up worms from eating small creatures such as slugs and insects. The eggs laid by the worms in the dog’s intestines, are eliminated when your pet passes faeces. These eggs can be spread around by wet weather and by mixing with soil. If you, your family or your pet accidentally consume worm eggs (typically from the ground outside), they hatch and can wreak silent havoc inside the body. The hatched worm larvae (which are too small to easily see) burrow through the animal or person’s intestine wall and churn their way through the body tissues to the muscles, the liver or the eyes. Here, they can gather together and can cause serious disease in these organs. WHAT ABOUT ME? In humans, it is often the eye that is affected, causing permanent blindness and an obvious permanent whitening of one eye. Be careful to encourage hand-

washing. It is usually children who are affected by larval disease although anyone accidently ingesting an egg could suffer. WHAT ABOUT BARNEY? With our pets themselves, it is the adult worms which are usually the most dangerous for them. The adult worms in the dog’s gut cause poor health and can produce vomiting or diahorrea. In young pups they can cause the gut to go into spasm and create a life threatening blockage. If our pets eat poo, they can also suffer from larvae disease in their organs. WHAT ABOUT BARNEY? None of the readily available treatments in supermarkets, pet shops or online will treat for all the worm species which are a threat to our pets. Most notably, canine lungworm requires specific, veterinary only wormers. Please help us to help you keep your canine companion safe by giving them the right worming treatment at the right times. The story of 18 year old East Belfast tennis star Karola-Patricia Bejenaru who has made the game of tennis her life and is making her way up the world rankings.

orn in Braila - Romania Karola comes from a sporting family: her grandfather played tennis; her father played table tennis and her mother and sister played handball. “When I was 2 years old I used to take my dad’s table tennis bat to bounce balls.” When she was 7 years old, she started to play tennis at school one summer. After the summer others quit playing, but Karola was enjoying it and the coach spotted her talent. At the age of 8 Karola started to play tournaments all over Romania and her mum drove her every day to practice and in the weekends to tournaments. At age 9, she started to train everyday, practicing on clay in the summer and on an indoor court in the winter. At U10 she was number 8 in Romania and at U12, before she left to live in Belfast, she was number 1 in Romania. Karola’s father Leonard has lived in Belfast for 15 years. He is immensely proud and has an extraordinary commitment to help Karola succeed in her goals. He had 3 jobs just to keep the family going and support his daughters tennis. In 2007 Karola, her sister and mum moved to join her dad in Belfast. “Since I arrived in Belfast I started training with Ulster Tennis. It was very hard for me at the start as I didn’t speak English. Everyone was really nice to me. When I was 14, I started training with Przemek Stec, a

former juniors champion from Poland and Ulster Champion. Since then I have been the second youngest player in Ireland to win the U18 Fitzwilliam LTC.” Karola is in the top 20 in Tennis Europe and number 1 in Ireland. At the age of 15 she got her first points in the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit, U18 in Norway. “My first ITF win was in 2013 in Edinburgh. At the age of 15 I started playing Juniors ITF reaching a career high ranking of 101, and continued getting my ranking up and playing grade 2, 1 and A tennis including Grand Slams Wimbledon and Roland Garros. Wimbeldon was totally different than anything else - we were taken to the courts in a Mercedes. They picked us up and took us through the seniors entrance

“My goal is to go higher and do Northern Ireland proud. But this will be challenging without some extra support. ”

by mistake and Federer and Djokovic were in front of us - we had to explain we were at the wrong place! I played on Court 14 and Court 10 (Tuesday and Thursday of week 2) My goal for juniors was to play the Grand Slams by the end of 2015 so my dad and I travelled with the car around Europe to tournaments. It was very difficult as it was very expensive and tiring. Sometimes we slept in the car as the hotels were expensive for us.” Karola’s dad entered her into the Australian Open and the US Open in [2015] to see where she was on the list. “When the list came out I was in main draw already but my Dad withdrew me from them because they were very expensive and my family couldn’t afford it. Until recently, my dad, Leonard cleaned in a cinema and delivered pizzas for Dominos from 4.30pm through to 5am before heading home to pick me up to go to training at 7am and finish at 8.15am, before going to school. After I finish school, my dad takes me to training again from 16:00-18:00.” Even right now it’s very difficult to get to play in most of the tournaments she should play. She started her professional tennis journey in 2015, finishing 954 in the world in singles and 955 in doubles. She is currently 771 in singles rankings making her Ireland’s number 2 female tennis player. “I am the first NI tennis

player to reach this ranking. My goal is to go higher and do Northern Ireland proud. But this will be challenging without some extra support. My dad now has problems with his back from working too much, and the only income that we have right now is my mum’s; she has 2 jobs and it’s very difficult to make ends meet and allow me to continue my tennis career. At the moment, I can only compete in the lowest level of WTA tournaments.” Dundonald resident George Glenholmes now sponsors Karola. He read about Leonard working 18 hours a day to support her. He said, “At the time Karola was playing in Cork and Leonard slept in the car while she stayed in the hotel. I just felt they needed my help. I saw what Karola was achieving and I thought she was a phenomenal talent. I tracked down Leonard’s number, rang them and went to visit. Things were obviously tough and after speaking with them and her coach, I just said I’m prepared to help. That was back in July 2012 and its been marvellous to see her develop her game. She’s done so well and I’m prepared to keep helping her.” With your help too, Karola can aim to improve her ranking in 2016 to top 400 and play at the challenger level, one step away from the Grand Slams. THE SLIEVE DONARD

An Experience Not Just A Hotel Stay

We recently had the opportunity to stay at the extraordinary Hastings Hotel; The Slieve Donard Hotel & Spa in County Down. Running late for our trip and with the sweat still on the brow from a rather intense print deadline amongst other rat race related issues, perhaps we were in too frazzled a state of mind to fully embrace our time there? A doubt quickly answered and dealt with as soon as we swept into the grounds with the majestic Victorian building overlooking the crisp and serene golden strand.

A

gog with the sight of this striking building and unflinchingly tranquil water, it wasn’t long before all memories of the mayhem stricken outside world seeped from our frazzled minds and drifted out to sea. We had arrived. Welcomed by a friendly face on reception who chatted to us as if we stayed there every week, we were checked in effortlessly and were shown to our room. A luxurious, comfortable and beautifully finished spacious room too with a stunning bathroom and view to the golf links. And as if they’d looked directly into our minds while checking us in, a sumptuous, freshly baked cupcake awaited us along with a couple of pieces of fudge as a chaser. Now wired on the sugary thrills of the cupcake and suitably refreshed for our evening ahead, we took a walk through the hotel and grounds. How anyone gets any work done in this place with that coastline view ahead of them is beyond me. The six acres of immaculate grounds at the foot of the Mournes are also straddled on the other side by Royal County Down Golf club. It was a crisp summers evening and we took in the public art, beautiful gardens, the chef’s herbs which were housed in vintage boats a stones throw from the kitchens and of course the beach.

FOOD & DRINK With a dinner reservation for 8.30pm, there was time for a quick livener in Chaplin’s bar, named after the man himself who stayed here for a no doubt quiet weekend back in 1921 which surely involved a trip to the Silent Valley. As guests arrived from their days activities, the day was turning to night so we made our way to The Percy French Inn for dinner. Named after writer, artist and entertainer, Percy French, composer of the famous song “The Mountains of Mourne”, this is a fabulous Inn within the grounds of the hotel. We were shown to our table which was at a huge panoramic window with views out across the sea just as the sun was setting. Aside from children, family, friends and maybe some albums, all memories of anything other than The Slieve Donard had been systematically removed from the main servers of our

brains. Yet again the staff were incredible, so welcoming, so professional and yet never OTT. Just fantastic. We had a quick chat with our waitress, who again was like an old friend, and placed our orders. To start we had Chicken Liver Pâté served on toasted Soda Bread With Rocket and Red Onion garnish and Spiced Pear Chutney. Plus North Coast Crab cakes made with locally sourced Northern Irish Crab Meat with Spices and Herbs and accompanied by Hastings Hotels home-grown Chilli-Mint Jelly. All as incredible as they sound as you read it out. For the main course, overlooking the sea it was tempting to keep it nautical and opt for the fish choices but we both decided to head inland. Hannan’s Glenarm Côte de Boeuf on the Bone 14oz which is rib of beef on the bone. A locally produced steak with a higher proportion of fat which helps natural basting during cooking, and often considered by many as the most flavoursome. Cooked to the pinnacle of perfection, this was (and apologies to our vegetarian readers) one of the most thrilling carnivorous experiences one could ever imagine, as the eyes closed slowly on every single bite. My wife opted for the Irish Lamb Shank. Braised and served on a bed of Mint Mash, with a Red Wine, Pear and Lime Chutney Jus. Slow cooked and falling away from the bone into the sweet jus below, again a dish of pure perfection. Our wine was a Deakin Estate Shiraz. To top up the cupcake hit from earlier the chocolate brownie along with coffee dealt the killer blow finale to what was a wonderful dining experience overseen by a superb team of staff. A stroll was required before the energy boost from the coffee wore off and the staff would potentially have to awaken us from the table. The sun had set but the sky was still a subtly bright shade of blue. Reinvigorated, a nightcap was called for back in Chaplin’s. A Hendricks and tonic first then the cocktail list seemed to just flop open in front of our very eyes. Charlie must have been trying to tell us something. OK Chazza, if you insist, we’ll have a French Martini. Shaken by a superb barman who came and chatted to us about our day and explained that he re-shook

Slievenabrock suite

“ You can’t quite put your finger on it - many stand out aesthetic and sensory elements come together to make your stay different from any other ”

one of our cocktails as he wasn’t entirely happy with the standard of foam atop the Ketel One Vodka, Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur and Pineapple Juice below. Pure class. Another example of the people who evidently love working in this hotel. This was becoming a truly special experience. And so with the Martini glasses empty and an important engagement with the spa booked for tomorrow, it was time to call it a night and head back to the room to drift off to sleep with a grin, taking time to briefly remember that remarkable bit of meat from earlier. Ah yes.

THE SPA Morning meant another Slieve Donard meal which we were really, really OK with. Breakfast was served in the Oak Restaurant with a view out to another beautiful day in Newcastle. Take your pick from a continental, cereals, local breads, a full Irish or something else of your liking. All with created with Northern Ireland’s best seasonal pickings. Our next adventure was to the Spa where we were met by spa manager Helen who talked us through the treatments available and all the different areas of the spa itself. Covering 2 floors, the area features a gym, pool, rock sauna, amethyst steam room, vitality pools, Zen Fitness suite and drench showers. World famous ESPA spa treatments include hot stone therapies, facials, tailor made massage, pedicures and manicures. After an inevitable period of indecision, my wife opted for the ESPA Personalised facial after some expert advice from Helen. Who I must add, also arranged a late check out for us so we could enjoy the riches of the spa area without having to worry about heading back to pack too quickly and spoil the Zen vibe. The facial by Valentin was tailored especially and includes deep cleansing, exfoliation and

a treatment specific massage and mask. Intensive booster serum are chosen to suit individual needs too. The vitality pool overlooks the mountains and coast as every single bubble smacks a stress thought across the face into submission. The amethyst steam room and sauna cleanse the mind, body and soul of any hidden tensions lurking inside and the drench showers cascade over the body cooling the skin and nudging you to nip into the relaxation room to take time to wallow in the sensory seduction you have just experienced whilst sipping ice cold water, some fresh fruit, coffee and maybe a lie down. And then maybe one more circuit of everything again.

A FOND FAREWELL And then the stark reality that our stay has come to an end. Packing and making our way to check out, we knew we had experienced something special. We felt different from when we arrived. In a new frame of mind, relaxed, refreshed and inspired having been looked after by some wonderful people in a dream like setting. Despite the hundreds of words on this page, it’s hard to describe the Slieve Donard experience. Because it is just that; an experience. You can’t quite put your finger on it - many stand out aesthetic and sensory elements come together to make your stay different from any other; the interior; the food, the spa, the grounds, the building - yes. But these elements are underpinned by one striking factor - and that is the staff, who are just so charming, so welcoming, so friendly, so helpful but yet so down to earth. And so as we leave, with the Slieve Donard disappearing into the rear view mirror and we head back into the real world of deadlines and working life, we are determined to set yet another deadline; to book to do this all over again very, very soon.

Health & Wellbeing So folks here is a compact, efficient exercise routine to get you started. We spend 1 minute on each segment, which is 30 seconds of the exercise and then 30 seconds jogging in place. If you are having difficulty then slow the pace or try 20 seconds of exercise and 40 seconds jogging, try not to stop during sets. For more of a challenge then increase the exercise time to 40 seconds.Got it?

MAKE A CHANGE

OK then the exercises are twists, squats, high knees, mountain climbers and kick-outs finished by a 10 second sprint. Take a short break and then repeat this routine 2 more times. The photos show the correct way to perform the exercises and if you need further help the videos can be found on our Facebook page. Aim to complete this routine 3 to 5 times per week and you will notice that you perform better and will be prepared for what I have in store for you!

My name is James Robb and my goal is to teach you more about your body, provide you with exercise to keep, or get you, in shape and provide tips on nutrition. I’ll explain a bit more about myself so you can understand why I’m the man to listen to.

M

y own journey started around 6 years ago when I took up boxing as a sport, I was riveted when I discovered the changes possible in our bodies and lives when exercise and looking after the body shift up the scale of our priorities. I qualified as a boxing coach and since then I have dedicated myself to learning everything I can, getting further qualified and really being involved and helping people change their lives for the better as fitness impacts on many areas of our lives. I now own the Fat Burning Factory in Belfast where I train and coach my clients. Don’t worry, you don’t have to get punched in the face to get fit and I plan on giving you an overview of the

main muscle groups in your body and effective ways of exercising them. . To be able to make the most out of it I would advise on starting with preparing your cardiovascular system and will give you some beginner exercises. Improving your CV system has many benefits which include easier breathing, lower blood pressure and better general wellbeing. If you condition your body using the exercises below it will aid you when we progress further. I would love for you to get in touch with me and tell me your goals by calling in to the Fat Burning Factory on 409 Newtownards Road, e-mail or sending a private message on our Facebook page.

What is Blepharitis? ry Rosema rs McWatte

#18 / JULY 2016 / Pharmacy Advice

COME TO PHARMACY FIRST FOR ADVICE AND TREATMENT FOR SUN SAFETY Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Northern Ireland. Around 3,550 people develop skin cancer each year, accounting for 30% of all cancers diagnosed here. Local Pharmacy Medicare have been working in partnership with Cancer Focus NI and have some advice for you:

Blephartis? Blepharitis is a very common inflammation of the eyelids. It can make your eyelids look red and sometimes there are crusty flakes on the eyelashes. This can cause your eyes to feel irritated or itchy and sometimes burning or stingy. The symptoms tend to be worse in the morning and when you wake up you may find your lids are stuck together. Blepharitis is a chronic (long-term) condition. This means that once you have had it, it can come back even after it has cleared up. It normally affects both eyes. Why do I get it? There are two types of blepharitis. Anterior blepharitis affects the outside edge of your eyelids at the eyelashes and may be caused by staphylococcus bacteria. Posterior blepharitis affecting the inside rim of your eyelids, also called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). These glands produce the oily part of your tears and can get blocked. Who is at risk? Blepharitis can develop at any age although like many things it is more common as you get older since the glands in your eyelids that secrete part of your tears can become blocked more easily. What Can I do? Once an optometrist or GP has confirmed you have blepharitis the treatment starts with keeping your eyelids clean. Lubricants can also be used to help with eye comfort and sometimes oral antibiotics are required. Initially you should begin a regular regime of warm compresses and eyelid hygiene. Your optometrist will be able to advise you fully and will have a range of products to help. The very latest of these, launched a few months ago, is EyePeace (pictured above left), an eyelid massager. It works to stimulate the Meibomian glands to secrete their oil and can be very helpful in lessening dry eye symptoms. It was designed and developed by two ophthalmologists – one of whom is local Belfast Consultant Professor Johnny Moore. I have several patients now using this regularly. Why not ask your optometrist for more information and a demonstration of this innovative simple device.

www.medicare-group.com MediCare have been working in partnership with the locally based charity Cancer Focus NI all year to raise awareness of sun safety and contributing factors which may place people at a higher risk of developing skin cancer. Michael Guerin, MediCare Managing Director said: “The last thing anyone wants on their summer holiday is sunburn. But it is also important to be aware of the long term damage of exposing yourself to too much sun, even in a Northern Ireland setting. Different skin types react differently to the sun and some individuals and groups may be at higher risk of developing skin cancer. Pharmacists and their staff can advise on sun safety techniques which can be put into practice during periods of exposure. Your local pharmacy may also be able to help treat

sunburn and you should feel confident to make community pharmacy your first port of call.” Your local MediCare Pharmacy team can: •Give advice on preventing & treating sunburn •Give advice on checking your skin for signs of skin cancer •Explain the importance of sunscreen and suggest what may be best for you Research carried out by Cancer Focus NI shows that 8 out of 10 people do not apply sunscreen at home unless they are ‘actively’ sunbathing. Sun awareness is important – you don’t need to be sunbathing to get skin cancer; it’s over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) which can cause serious damage over time. It’s important for everyone to avoid getting sunburned, particularly children.

SEEK SHADE AND AVOID PROLONGED EXPOSURE FROM 11AM TO 3PM / WEAR CLOTHING AND HATS THAT PROTECT AGAINST UVR AND USE SUNSCREEN WITH A MINIMUM SPF OF 15 PLUS UVA 4-STAR AND APPLY LIBERALLY

HAIR COLOURING

With A Personal Touch!

Sabrina

Discover what hair colour is perfect for enhancing your your skin tone and eye colour. Knowing your colour type is definitely useful. After all, nobody wants to look washed out, pale or older because of an awkward choice of hair colour. The following colour type descriptions help you discover the colours and tones, which not only enhance your hair style but also your face.

First of all find out what your skin tone is: The colour of your veins determine your skin tone.

then you are cooler toned. arms and look at your wrists to see what color your veins look like through your skin.

The colour of your veins can show you if your skin colouring is cool or warm. If you stand outside or in a room with bright natural light, hold up your arms and look at your wrists to see what color your veins look like through your skin. •If your veins look like they are blue, then your undertone is cool. • If your veins look like they are green, then your undertone is warm.

Eye Colour Eye colour and hair colour go hand in hand, it is important to take into consideration your eye colour before you decide on what hair color you want. If unsure, talk to your hairstylist about what hair colours will compliment your eyes.

Try Coloured paper If you find it hard to see your veins or even just to double check your results, try the paper test. You have to get yourself several pieces of colored paper. You will need paper in yellow, red, white, green, silver and blue. Take one at a time, and hold the coloured piece of paper next to your face. If your skin looks more radiant with the red and yellow sheets of paper, then you are more warm toned. But if your skin looks better with the white, green, silver, and blue sheets of paper,

Warm colouring means that you’re likely to have one of the following hair, skin tone & eye combinations: Your natural hair colour is, chestnut, charcoal brown, coppery-brown, dark golden blonde, red, light or dark auburn Your eye colour tends to be hazel, Amber, golden brown, hazel, or green eyes You may have freckles and Tan easily, your complexion is golden-brown, yellow-beige, peach or ivory. Cool colouring means that you’ll have one of the following hair, skin tone and eye combinations: Your natural hair colouring is

black, dark brown, medium brunette, ash blonde, silver grey, salt and-pepper or even white! Your eye colour tends to be Light blue, grey, dark brown dark blue or black eyes Your complexion is black, olive, fair, rosy or pale. If you have white skin, it very often burns in the sun.

Jennifer Lopez caramel and brunette tones in her hair compliment her warm skin colouring.

Anne Hathaway suits her cool brown hair which enhances her dark brown eyes.

Brown hair colour There is a shade of brown to suit every skin type. Brown hair colour is great if you want an easily managed look. Brown is also great if your hair is damaged. Browns reflect well in light which gives the hair its great shine. If your skin is light, try a medium brown or brown with red tones. Keep away from dark browns unless you have naturally dark brown hair. This could cause you to look too pale. If your skin is medium toned, go for a medium brown, like a caramel or auburn. If you have dark skin, decide on dark shades of brown like an espresso or mocha. Try not to go for shades that are more than two shades lighter than your natural colour. Red hair colour The colour red is very versatile and there’s usually a shade to suit anyone. Your skin determines the right shade for you. If your skin is light, a strawberry blonde or copper red would work well with this skin tone. Darker shades like burgundy can give you a washed out look. If you have medium skin, shades like a medium

copper or auburn will look great. If your skin tone is dark, go for a medium auburn or warm chestnut brown.

Blonde hair colour Blond hair is a great choice if you have a light or medium skin tone. Keep in mind that if you are not a natural blond, maintaining your colour can be expensive. To maintain the look you need regular touch-ups and toning to keep that beautiful blonde tone in the hair without it turning brassy. If your skin is light, a light creamy, golden or beige blonde would work well. Having your hair too ash or white can give you a washed out look Medium skin tone suits a medium toned blonde like a golden or beige. Dark skin tones suit darker shades of blonde like caramels or honeys. Or you can just add some highlights. Blondes that are platinum blonde or orange looking can make your hair look fake. THERE ARE ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS! If you find you have a mix match of result and can’t figure out your skin tone you may have a neutral skin tone. Neutral skin tones can pull off any colour but do tend to sway favourably one way. Your hairstylist should be able to advise you on this and give you more details!! No matter your skin tone, if you feel a colour makes you feel great, wear it!

Making a Difference Charity Endeavour

Pupils From Bloomfield Collegiate Support The National Deaf Children’s Society, The Leading Charity Dedicated To Breaking Down Barriers For Deaf Children And Young People.

BLOOMFIELD PUPILS RAISE £3,000 FOR NATIONAL DEAF CHILDREN’S SOCIETY They made the winning presentation within the school against other groups competing for funding for their respective charities in a project run by the youth and philanthropy initiative, NI.

T

he pupils were among hundreds of schoolchildren across Northern Ireland, who have taken part in a project to win a total of £45,000 for the charities of their choice. Around 1600 children from 15 schools took part in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative NI, which encourages young people to engage with worthwhile causes in their own communities. Throughout the year groups of children from Year 9 or 10 within each of the schools have competed to win £3,000 for their chosen charities and the final results were revealed today at a special celebration event in the Whitla Hall at Queen’s University, Belfast. The Bloomfield Collegiate pupils presented the cheque to representatives of the charity which has an office in Hill Street in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter. Lauren Lamberton YPI NI programme manager said: “YPI is all about challenging the young people to look at ways of improving the lives of people around them. Those who take part have developed vital skills in researching their charities talking to representatives of organisations and working on presentations.” She said that YPI NI was hoping to increase the number of participating schools but this would involve getting more corporate sponsors to support the programme. “There are a lot of schools who have expressed an interest in taking part. There is no doubt that if we are able to raise extra funds we would be able to expand this programme to the benefit

of other schoolchildren.” Lauren revealed that Youth and Philanthropy Initiative NI had come to the end of its funding last year but was saved when the fathers of a girl from one of the schools came to the rescue. Businessman Neil McKibbin saw the positive effect that working on a social needs project had on his own daughter and offered to give 50% of the costs to run the project for a further three years. He is now chair of the four man board and is committed to the work continuing to grow in Northern Ireland. Neil’s daughter Kathryn had worked on a project with her school Bloomfield Collegiate, and although her group did not win the £3,000 first prize for their chosen charity, he saw the value of young people being engaged in such a rewarding exercise. Lauren said the celebration was not all about the winners: “All of the pupils of the schools have gained a lot of confidence and social awareness out of working with charities. Lasting relationships have developed and these young people have developed an interest in working for the good of their communities.” Next year they are hoping with extra funding to roll the project out to 20 to 25 schools. The celebration event began with a number of the school giving a presentation of their work. The keynote speaker was Anita Dennison, a first year student from Queen’s University who began a successful campaign to stop

bullying in schools. Anita from the village of Bessbrook, was named the Diana Anti Bullying Champion in the annual Roll of Honour in 2015. The 19-year-old, who runs her own anti-bullying website and Twitter campaign which not only helps other victims of bullying but inspires and advises parents and adults, was the only young person from Northern Ireland to win an accolade. The celebration event is an opportunity for each school to showcase their work. Three awards were given out : 1. For the teacher/school most passionate about YPI 2. Individual student of the year 3. Individual charity of the year Lauren added: “The programme doesn’t just benefit the charities that receive £3,000 but we have got groups of interested engaged young people working hard to help local charities. Many go on to continue to raise money for their own charities. “We have had schools who haven’t won but have gone out and raised their own money. For example a Spina Bifida charity which spoke out at a final event last year said it was important not just to be winners but to get the opportunity to get the message out to the young people.” For more information about Youth and Philanthropy Initiative NI contact Programme Manager, Lauren Lamberton on lauren@goypi.org or tel: 07725 588255

Pupils at Greenwood House Assessment Centre Get VIP Treatment TEAM WORK AT CREGAGH PRIMARY Since September 2015, Cregagh Primary has been working in partnership with the Barnardo’s and Stranmillis University Intern Scheme, to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support to selected pupils, as well as Family Learning activities on a weekly basis for pupils and parents. Adam Baird was the graduate teacher intern, based in Cregagh this year. “The internship has not only assisted the pupils with their literacy and numeracy, but has also encouraged parents with how they can engage with their children, to deliver the curriculum at home. Parents are such an important feature in education; seeing the support given to the scheme by the pupils, parents and staff, has made this year such a success. I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the internship and hope that the work being done, will continue from strength to strength. I cannot thank the families and staff

enough for the support they have given to both me and Barnardo’s this year. It has helped me shape and develop further as a teacher, but also as an individual.” Having seen pupil attainment rise over the past year, the East Belfast primary school intends to continue building its relationship with both Barnardos and Stranmillis University College. Cregagh Primary School Principal, David Heggarty, concluded: “It has been a delight working with these educational partners to help raise attainment among our pupils. Every child involved has benefitted, as to have the parents: who were enthusiastic participants in the initiative from its beginning. I would like to thank Barnardos, Stranmillis College and Mr Adam Baird in particular, for helping us realise our school’s mission statement of ‘Putting Children First’ - together we have done just that!”

Little Wing in Ballyhackamore opened early one last month especially for the P2 pupils from Greenwood House Assessment Centre, all of whom are moving on to new schools for P3. It was a lovely morning for the pupils who are leaving Greenwood House. “Craig at Little Wing was so welcoming and had juice and colouring pages ready for the children. We ordered two 24” pizzas - the children had never seen pizzas as big and were so excited to eat them!”

uthentic scratches, genuine dust and wonderful, honest craftsmanship are the sort of things we might look for in piece when we are on our finding missions. Jokes aside, we really do love the life that’s displayed in old wood, furniture and vintage household items. Salvage and industrial in particular are in fact BEST when they’ve been through a few fac-

tories or homes. With the exception of our antique pieces of course! An added bonus of getting the genuine article, be it an industrial anglepoise light, salvage wood for a wall or old school chairs for your kitchen dining, is that you are salvaging a small slice of history. It lit, floored or sat many people before its journey to you. Personally, I adore that!

IKEA INVESTS £275k IN REFURBISHED RESTAURANT

IKEA Belfast has undergone a major £275k refurbishment in its restaurant, increasing capacity by almost a third, making it Northern Ireland’s largest restaurant.

T

he restaurant, which can now seat 450, has been designed for the digital age and now includes USB ports, free Wi-Fi and an interactive digital children’s play area. The refurbishment also resulted in the recruitment of 12 new co-workers in IKEA Food. Designed by IKEA Belfast’s Interior Design Team and with relaxed seating and booths, it incorporates garden walls, wooden birch trees and a range of different seating zones which overlook Belfast Harbour. IKEA’s Food Manager Rebecca Davies, “This family friendly restaurant has been entirely transformed and the new design has incorporated feedback from our customers including local breastfeeding groups. We are sure our customers will agree that it’s a gorgeous

space with a superb ambience. She added; “We identified some time ago that there was a need for more seating so it was an ideal opportunity to rejuvenate our popular restaurant. The revamp has also allowed us to make a significant investment in encouraging a more healthy lifestyle including introducing a new range of reduced sugar drinks and cutting sugar by half in the drinks tower.” The restaurant also has a strong focus on sustainability with LED lighting used throughout, and the serving of UTZ sustainable coffee and fish and shrimps from independently certified fisheries. Last year, IKEA became the first retailer to use 100% cotton from more sustainable sources and these fabrics are also used throughout the new decor.

The Arts

Features•July 2016 #18 / JULY 2016 / Art in the East Side

20/20

Creative Exchange Artist Studios are celebrating our 20th Anniversary this year and to mark the occasion we have organized 20/20 –consisting of 5 high-profile events for the Eastside Arts Festival in August 2016

T

he organization has been in existence as an artists studios since 1996. It was set up originally in an old mill on the Creagh Road by a group of local artists in reaction to the lack of visual arts representation in East Belfast. They moved premises in 2009 to Portview Trade Centre (another old linen mill site!) on the Newtownards Road where they are currently situated. Over the last 20 years the main objective of Creative Exchange has been to nurture artists in their career development by providing affordable studios, a platform to showcase their work, and to act as a generator for the exchange of ideas and opportunities. The artists made a conscious decision to engage with the local community and have delivered a number of memorable local art projects. In 2013 and 2014 the ambitious ‘Art in the Eastside’ project presented the work of 50 artists displayed on billboards around East Belfast. This year 20/20 celebration

will launch another billboard project at the end of July; the work of 20 international, national and local artists will be displayed on huge billboards on the surrounding streets bringing contemporary art out of the gallery where it can be experienced by the passing public and to commuters travelling in and out of the city. An exhibition curated by Sarah McAvara will open on Thursday 11th August at the old engine room space at Portview. This will feature many Creative Exchange member artists and is open to the public free of charge until 27th August. The idea running through the exhibition is that under the same sky diversity manages to thrive. The 20/20 project is not just a 20th birthday anniversary but is also a celebration of the growing cultural landscape of East Belfast. A series of artist’s talks and a performance art event by renowned collective BBeyond will take place on Saturday 20th August. During the exhibition, Creative

Exchange will host a symposium which looks at the real cost of arts-led regeneration, in the context of the sustainability of visual arts within East Belfast. It has been a stirring time for the east of the city recently, with new collectives and galleries emerging, making this area a more active and vibrant place to live and work. As an artist led initiative Creative Exchange are well known for their engagement in community arts programmes. Alongside 20/20 artists will be running a series of Wish Tree Workshops with local groups. These workshops aim to increase access to the arts whilst reflecting on cultural and social issues relevant to East Belfast. The workshops will culminate in a public art installation of Wish Trees, which will be showcased in Connswater Shopping Centre. The installation will bring together the groups ideas, cultural values, questions, solutions and wishes that reflect the community and hopes for the future.

Creative Exchange 20/20 Events August 2016 All Events taking @ the Engine Room Space, 310 Newtownards Rd, Belfast Thursday 11th Aug 20/20 Exhibition Opens, curated by Sarah McAvera The exhibition will continue until Saturday 20th 11am-4pm / Saturday 13th August Artists Talks | Thursday 18th August Symposium ‘The Real Cost of Regeneration’ | Saturday 20th August Performance Event with Bbyond *From approximately Monday the 15th to the 31st of August the Art in the Eastside Project will be in situ in sites in and around East Belfast, consisting of up to 30 Billboard locations. #18 / JULY 2016 / New Space Gallery Gala A New Home

WHALLEY FINE ART UNVEIL NEW EAST BELFAST GALLERY SPACE

Owner Stephen said

Friday 27th May was a grand occasion for Stephen and Dawn Whalley as they opened their new contemporary art gallery at 378a Belmont Road, Belfast.

T

here were over 60 new paintings on display by over 20 different artists and the gallery hosted over 200 guests to beautiful drinks reception and exquisite food by renowned chef Andy Rea from Home Restaurant and Mourne Seafood. Whalley Fine Art recently renovated and moved to the historic stable property set in the grounds of Lismachen House at the bottom of Craigantlet Hill, near Massey Avenue. Dawn and Stephen have been in the Art Gallery business since 2008 and are a husband and wife team dedicated to working with their customers to find and add to current or new art collections. They started off in the High Street in Holywood and had a great 8 years there, but after finding the perfect new building and location moved to get away from the hussle and bustle of the High Street where they could use the new space to display more work and have their own personal studios based there. Dawn is famous for her animal and ‘Snail’ paintings which are now internationally known. Her Facebook page reaches over 100,000 people when she holds regular competitions to win

some of her original art work, Ltd Edition Prints and a vast array of products, find her under Dawn Crothers Artist. The new gallery has plans to introduce corporate destressing days where you come and paint in the beautiful new surroundings and even have the opportunity to learn how to frame and come away with a finished piece of art at the end of the day to hang and admire in your very own living room! Their next big exhibition is by Sligo based artist Heidi Wickham which will headline in late August and will be entitled ‘Bears and Hares’ this is a must see as Heidi is one of their biggest selling artists whom the gallery represents here in Northern Ireland.

“Our recent expansion has allowed us to increase our exhibition capacity and with great onsite parking facilities and only 3 miles from Belfast City Centre, we look to build our gallery and framing business two fold this year”

Local History

By Aidan Campbell

Features•July 2016

“Football is a gentleman’s game…” I THOUGHT THAT ANOTHER FOOTBALL ARTICLE WAS APPROPRIATE GIVEN THE WONDERFUL RESULT OF THE NORTHERN IRELAND FOOTBALL TEAM WHEN THEY BEAT UKRAINE 2-0. BUT THEY HAD A SHAKY START V POLAND AND BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS WE WILL ALL KNOW THE FINAL RESULT OF THE GERMAN GAME. FINGERS CROSSED! THE ARTICLE ON RUGBY (THE ‘HOOLIGAN’S GAME PLAYED BY GENTLEMEN’) WILL BE DEFERRED UNTIL NEXT MONTH. NO DOUBT THE SUCCESS OF OUR NATIONAL TEAM HAS ROOTS THAT GO BACK A LONG WAY. MANY SMALL CLUBS DID NOT LAST FOR VERY LONG.

Aidan Campbell has previously published 11 East Belfast local history books entitled:

Beaconsfield, Knock, Cherryvalley, Gilnahirk, Castlereagh, Cregagh, Stormont, Sydenham, Belmont and East Belfast Revisited Volumes 1 & 2. Newtownbreda is a local history on South Belfast.

Aidan’s latest local history book is entitled ‘Belfast Through Time’. Aidan regularly gives illustrated talks to local groups and societies.

Most books are available at Hillmount Garden Centre, Marie Curie Hospice, Hamilton News Cregagh and Pat’s Newsagency, Saintfield Road with profits donated to local charity. Book sales online at Amazon.

CASAELDONA FOOTBALL CLUB Pictured here in 1907. It is not known where exactly the football pitch and wooden clubhouse was located. Casaeldona is a rather hilly environment unsuitable to playing football so the grounds may have been nearby at Lisnasharragh which is somewhat flatter. Back far left with the cap is David Kell and alongside is John Campbell who lived near-by at a farm called City View (now the site of a modern development called ‘Orchardvale’ near Glenburn). John was killed during the First World War in 1918. Second from the right in the back row is John Stewart who lived at a house called ‘Laburnum’ on Knock Road close to the Braniel estate.

WILLOWFIELD FC An even earlier photograph shows ‘Willowfield FC’ which according to the writing on the football was taken in 1905 and they must have met somewhere in the Cregagh/Woodstock area. Quite a crowd has turned up to have their photograph taken and notice that nearly everyone, except the players, is wearing a cap.

RAVENSCROFT FC The plaque says ‘Ravenscroft FC, 1927-1928 and the teacher standing back right is Tommy O’Hara. But dangerous times were not too far in the future. During the Easter Blitz of 1941 the locality was heavily bombed and Ravenscroft School plus much of the surrounding area was destroyed though fortunately no lives were lost. A second wave of the Blitz came in May 1941 when a bomb crater in Ravenscroft Avenue was reported to be the largest ever seen in Belfast.

ULSTER HOSPITAL Fred Lemon was a talented footballer and played as a goalkeeper (2nd from right, back row). He once had a trial for Glentoran. In 1957 he was working as a plumber for the health service and was a member of the Ulster Hospital team pictured.

42nd BB Will Hamill (front row, 3rd from left) was captain of the 42nd B.B. football team, connected to Strand Presbyterian Church on Connsbrook Avenue in 1950. The goalkeeper standing in the back row is Billy Cairns. Unfortunately although it was quite a good team they never won a football competition. Most home games were played at the Victoria Park football pitches on a Saturday where there used to be rowing boats for hire as well as an outdoor (unheated!) swimming pool.

CHOCOLATE & FINE FOOD FESTIVAL

Chef Paul Rankin (L) and Finnebrogue Artisan Chairman Denis Lynn (R) join Hans Sloane, the 17th Century County Down born inventor of milk chocolate

Thousands of chocoholics and enthusiastic foodies from Northern Ireland and beyond are set to descend again this year on Killyleagh town centre to celebrate the 2016 Finnebrogue Artisan Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival, 23rd – 25th September.

ponsored by artisan producer Finnebrogue, based in nearby Downpatrick and famous for their outstanding quality venison and sausages, among other favourites, this year’s festival will be the largest one yet, with over 15 chocolatiers and nearly 40 local artisan food producers scheduled to set up camp at the historic Killyleagh Castle for the weekend-long festival. Founded in 2010 to celebrate Killyleagh’s most famous son, Hans Sloane, who was born in the village in 1660 and later became one of the most famous men of his time partially because of his development of milk chocolate, the biennial festival has grown from strength to strength and is now regarded as one of the leading events of its type in the UK and Ireland. Joining the line-up of this year’s festival is Cancer Fund for Children, who have been confirmed as the beneficiary of this year’s fundraising activities. The leading local charity provides practical, emotional and financial support to children and young people affected by cancer and their families, and also offers therapeutic short breaks at Daisy Lodge in Newcastle, just a short drive from Killyleagh. The festival will kick off on Friday 23rd September with the Chocolate Ball which will take place on the grounds of the stunning Killyleagh Castle, one of Ireland’s longest-inhabited castles. Guests will be treated to a chocolate-rich menu prepared and

The three-day celebration will continue on Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th September with the Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival, where guests can enjoy the range of chocolatiers’ displays and market stalls, taste and purchase local artisan produce, and be entertained by the activities for the whole family, offering serious fun for all in 2016! NI KARATE ACADEMY RETURN FROM THE WORLD CHAMPS WITH A GLITTERING MEDAL HAUL

NIKA Travelled to Rimini at weekend for the WKC World Karate Championships, with the help of their sponsor GMB Trade Union. The team of eight have been training hard with World Champion“Sensei Cathy McAleer” in preparation for the Championships for months. The NIKA team had great success at the championships and represented Northern Ireland to a very high standard.

ALL UPDATES AND TEAM RESULTS WILL BE POSTED ON FACE BOOK AND THEIR WEBSITE WWW.NORTHERNIRELANDKARATE.CO.UK

It is great to see two very strong females in the team and following in my footsteps. Both girls have such drive and determination to win.

E

ffie Ellis O’Neil a former World silver medallist narrowly was defeated in first round by 3:1 victory to Italy. Effie had been training nonstop in preparation for the event, as well as preparing for her Dan Grade (Black belt). Effie, has been in NIKA since 5years of age and aims to follow in her big brother Roan Ellis O’Neill’s footsteps and achieve her Black Belt on the 3rd July. Effie said “this is fittest and strongest I have ever been and I was disappointed in Italy, but I feel really good and cant wait to grade my black belt next week”. Team mate and World Champion Lucy Ouldfield, only 14 years of age is a former junior world champion in 2014. Lucy competed in 2015 and moved up an age category last year in Lithuania and won a silver medal in kumite (Fighting) and was disappointedly beaten in the final 1:0. Lucy returned this year and won the Gold. Lucy also got bronze medal in kata. Lucy had her heart set on a medal this year in Rimini and even with a shoulder injury, she trained hard and the hard work paid off. However, girls don’t rule it all in NIKA Fergus McMullan currently sitting his GCSE’S, has juggled his study, fitness and preparation for Italy. Fergus, travelled out to Rimini behind the team and on

hos own after his exam Friday afternoon as he didn’t want to miss the championships. Fergus achieved silver medal in the worlds and narrowly missed out on gold by 0.4 of a score. Fergus who recently went through an operation to have a pin placed in the hand. This did not stop Fergus one bit. He was back into class on the Thursday and asking for alternative training from Sensei McAleer as he was adamant he would not lose his fitness and speed for Italy. Sensei McAleer worked with Fergus and continued the preparation for the World Championships throughout Fergus rehab after the operation. Fergus will compete in Kata at this championships and was disappointed don’t to fight, however made a very mature decision with Sensei McAleer to let the hand heal fully for the British Championships in September. Over the last ¾ months Sensei McAleer has focused on one discipline (Kata) with Fergus working on his speed power and technique and Sensei McAleer said he is looking razor sharp in Italy. Luca Lavery and Jude Neil only 9 & 10 years of age were selected to compete in and represent Northern Ireland, in their very first World championships. Both boys have put in a lot of extra training and know it was not going to be easy and

a massive step up from what they have experienced in local tournaments and loved the trip and travelling with the team, representing NI. Luca had tremendous performance and lifted a bronze in the under 12yrs kata category. Luca was over the moon and absolutely loved the trip and experience. Senior men’s team Kevin Neil, Jim Mccafferty and Charlie McMullan are returning to defend their World title in team kata and bronze medal in team kumite from Munich. Unfortunately team mate Martin Rice could not attend this trip due to work commitments but wishes the team the best of luck. Jim just recovering form very bad chest infection was concerned it may have an impact on his kumite performance but has made decision to push on and compete. The team did unreal and achieved Gold in senior men’s Kata, Silver in Ipon means fighting and Jim also won bronze in Individual kata. Tremendous results form the seniors. Sensei McAleer, would like to thank “GMB Union” for helping the Northern Ireland team with sponsorship and support with the travel to this championships, as without their help and support we could not have afforded to have taken all eight competitors to the championships.

#18 / JULY 2016 / Pre Season Round Up

PRE SEASON FRIENDLIES

THE various Player Ins and Outs will hopefully be included in our next edition, but with our local Intermediate Clubs back in training, we’ll just have a quick look through the forthcoming Pre Season Friendlies.

GLENTORAN

At 11am on July 1st, Glentoran held a short Service of Remembrance at the Oval to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. The service was conducted by Club Chaplain, Rev David Thompson. After the service and a minute’s silence, vice chairman Ian Kerr laid a wreath on behalf of the club. Glentoran’s most attractive friendly is the visit of Scottish Premier Division side St Johnstone to the Oval this Saturday (9th July). Under ex Linfield and Northern Ireland goalkeeper Tommy Wright, the Perth side are enjoying their most successful period in the club’s history, winning their first ever Scottish Cup in 2014, and have played in the Europa League For the past four seasons. Last term, too, the Saints finished a creditable fourth in the SPL. The ‘Glentoran connection’ of course is through manager Alan Kernaghan who had a successful four year spell with St Johnstone as a player. Also coming up is the four team tournament organised by East Belfast. Glentoran will play Harland and Wolff Welders at the Oval on Thursday 28th July, with East Belfast hosting Dundela in the other semi final. The final will be held at the Oval

the following Sunday, with the two beaten semi finalists meeting at East Park on the Saturday. Other friendlies include the usual local tussle with neighbours Dundela; the official opening of Sirocco Works new pitch, and a trip to the Belfast Loughshore Hotel Arena (Taylor’s Avenue in ‘old money’) to meet Carrick Rangers; the Glens having snapped up Aaron Harmon and Aaron Smyth from Carrick during the close season. Sat 9th July – St Johnstone (h) Sat 16th July – Lurgan Celtic (a) Tue 19th July – Carrick Rangers (a) Sat 23rd July – Dundela (a) Tue 26th July – Sirocco Works (a) Thur 28th July – East Belfast Tournament – H&W Welders (h) Sat 30th or Sun 31st July; East Belfast Tournament

H&W WELDERS

Harland and Wolff Welders have been getting some work done to Tillysburn Park, and thus will be on their travels for their pre season friendlies. They will, of course, be taking part in the East Belfast tournament, with the short trip to Glentoran at the Oval on Thursday 28th. The beaten semi finalists will meet at East Park on the

Saturday, with the winners meeting in the final on the Sunday. The other main news from the Welders camp is that Colin Nixon has been appointed as manager of the Under 20s Development Squad. Colin holds the record for the most Glentoran appearances, and spent the latter part of last season at Larne. Chairman Thomas Flynn, a player when the Welders last had a ‘second team’, said “With the club progressing off the field, we felt it was important to seize the opportunity to develop the team.” Sat 16th July; Ballywalter (a) Tue 19th July; Crumlin United (a) Tue 26th July; Portadown (a) Thur 28th July; East Belfast Tournament, Glentoran (a) Sat 30th or Sun 31st July; East Belfast Tournament

DUNDELA

The main news from the Dundela camp is the return of striker Ben Roy from Premier side Carrick Rangers. The Duns are also taking part in this aforementioned East Belfast tournament.

SIROCCO APPOINT NEW MANAGER

SIROCCO Works have appointed ex Larne, Glenavon and Lisburn Distillery boss Tommy Kincaid as their new manager, in succession to Alan Crooks who stepped down at the end of last season due to work commitments. Tommy has managed in the Northern Amateur League before, enjoying two successful stints with East Belfast, and then he had a spell last season with Barn United, who controversially ended their arrangement just five games from the end of the season.A year later than scheduled, Sirocco will be able to look forward to the official opening of Dixon Park, hosting a Glentoran Select on July 26th. Works have spent five years at Wilgar Park, one at the Billy Neill Centre and the past three seasons, as tenants of Lisburn Distillery at Ballyskeagh, so a return to ‘home turf’ is well overdue. Last season, Sirocco came strong in the end, with a top half finish in 1b, despite languishing in the lower reaches for a large part of the season, having played few league fixtures due to their success in various cup competitions. Coming through that backlog was a big ask, yet Sirocco were only ruled out of contention for a promotion place in the last couple of weeks of the season. Kincaid admits, “There are good players at Sirocco, and it’s a good club, with good people involved. When Alan Crooks stepped down, they asked me down for a chat, and it was an easy decision to make. I saw a few of their matches near the end of the season, and I was impressed. It was only their backlog that prevented them finishing higher. The cup games caught up with them, but players want to play as many games as they can, and if you enter competitions, you might as well try and get as far as you can. “Our new pitch and Glentoran coming to open it is a big boost. After so many years away, Sirocco need their own base.” In 1b this season, Tommy will also come across his last club Barn United, relegated from 1a at the end of last season. As he told the Loop, “I enjoyed my time at Barn, it was sad the way it ended, especially after I had given a guarantee to stay the rest of the season. I do think if I had still been there, I’m not sure they would have gone down, for some of the matches that were left were winnable! We were giving everyone a good run for their money.” At Sirocco, though, Tommy won’t have his trusted sidekick, Andy Harwood, who is the new Director of the East Belfast Academy.

The beaten semi finalists will meet at East Park on Saturday afternoon, with the winners taking part in the final at the Oval on the Sunday. Lee Cathcart Takes Shorts FC Role

LEE Cathcart is looking forward to the new season, as the new manager of Shorts FC, coming to the club after a highly successful spell in charge of Down Area League side Greenwell Star. Last season, Lee led Star to three trophies, with the Newtownards side boasting an unbeaten run going back to September 2014. Lee will be assisted by his father Mark, along with coach Marty Orr and Ryan Shaw. He has already snapped up four of his ‘Star’ players, As Lee told the ‘Loop’, “The facilities at Shorts are second to none, it really is a progressive club, and you couldn’t help but be impressed. It’s a natural progressive step, and a chance to test my management and coaching at a higher level. But I’ve come from a successful team and hopefully I’ll be able to keep that winning mentality!”
