BUENA VISTA BEAVERS • 33-7, 22-6 IIAC • No. 1 Seed ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ... Freshman Bryce Wessels has provided the Beavers with versatility in the infield and depth at the plate. Wessels boasts a .304 batting average with 26 rbi, 20 runs scored, and 10 doubles this season. In the conference series finale, Wessels went 5-10 against the Duhawks with three runs scored. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER ... Sophomore catcher, Brandon Wessels leads the team offensively while also handling the Beavers’ pitching staff. In addition to holding team-high’s in slugging percentage, triples, and home runs, Wessels is tied for the lead in RBIs (31), while scoring a team-high 46 runs. Behind the plate, Wessels has managed one of the conference’s best pitching staffs. BOTTOM LINE ... The Beavers can take the Iowa Conference tournament title if they continue to succeed at what has fueled them all year – starting pitching and putting the ball in play. A solid rotation, led by senior Jon Ringblom, has held opponents bats in check, holding batters to a lousy .228 batting average, giving up just five long balls on the season. Leading the conference in total bases (573) the Beavers need to put the ball in play to earn the title. They can achieve this by showing patience at the plate and holding strikeouts to under five a game. The Beavers average nearly seven strikeouts a game in their seven losses this season. Buena Vista, the second best base stealing team in the conference, wins when they successfully swipe bases. In their 33 wins on the season the Beavers have tallied 51 stolen bases compared to three in their seven losses.

WARTBURG KNIGHTS • 25-15, 19-9 IIAC • No. 2 Seed ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ... Freshman Gavin Neidermann is fourth on the team in ERA with a 3.06, as well as fourth in Opp. Batting Average with .288. Neidermann has the most appearances among pitchers with 12 and has only allowed six runs all year, finishing with two saves for the Knights. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER ... A quick glance at the stats clearly highlights the Knights’ MVP this season. DJ Utley has torn the cover off the ball and leads his team in over nine offensive categories including batting average, RBIs, and on-base percentage. Not only has he been lethal in the batter’s box, when he toes the rubber, he’s anchored the back-end of the Wartburg rotation, throwing 37.1 innings, striking out 25, while only walking nine. BOTTOM LINE ... From the very beginning, the Knights were picked to finish second in the Iowa Conference. With that being said, however, Wartburg split the season series with Buena Vista, who enters the IIAC Tournament ranked 18th in the Top-25. In order for the Knights to grab the crown and the bid to the NCAA Tournament, they’ll need clutch hitting throughout their lineup so that even if opponents pitch around Utley, Wartburg can still be dangerous. If the championship game pits Wartburg against Buena Vista, don’t be surprised to see the Knights shining victoriously in their armor.

CENTRAL DUTCH • 25-14, 17-11 IIAC • No. 3 Seed ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ... Freshman Zach Brown, who will be coming home to play in the tournament, has displayed a knack for getting on base for the Dutch this season. He is originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and a product of Xavier High School. He has primarily played first base and third base for the Dutch, and has batted .301/.430/.359 in 34 games. He is also a prefect two for two on steal attempts throughout the year. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER ... Senior Robbie Rushing, who finished second in the conference, with a .401 batting average, is Central’s Most Valuable Player. He only trailed Wartburg’s DJ Utley, who finished with regular season with a .422 average. Rushiang also led the team in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, doubles, and home runs. A dual position threat, Rushing has hadded four victories on the mound, throwing 37.1 innings, fanning 27 batters in the process. BOTTOM LINE ... For the Dutch to be successful and win this tournament, they need to rely on their senior leadership in Rushing, Jordan Judkins, and Adam Ariola at the plate, along with their ace Judson McKown. They will need to avoid errors by their younger players, who can make or break this team. The Dutch will be looking to improve from their performance in last year’s tournament and could give Buena Vista or Wartburg a run for the automatic bid.

LORAS DUHAWKS • 17-21, 13-15 IIAC • No. 4 Seed ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ... Entering the Iowa Conference Tournament with a 9-game hitting streak, sophomore transfer Spence Bonner has found his way into the Duhawk lineup. Bonner is now hitting .333 on the year with and .381 on-base percentage. If called upon, Bonner can provide a reliabe bat to the Loras lineup. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER ... Whether it’s hitting the walk-off grand slam or throwing a 9-inning complete game, sophomore Patrick Walsh has been the anchor of this Loras team. The “Lord of Lombard” wields the lumber to hit with the best of them in the Iowa Conference. Loras’ success in this tournament will rely heavily on his ability to get on base and drive in runs. BOTTOM LINE ... The Duhawks enter the Iowa Conference Tournament in sluggish fashion. Loras has dropped 10 of their last 12 in conference play, losing three straight series to Wartburg, Central, and Buena Vista. However, the season no longer consists of four-game series, meaning that one bad inning could spell doom for opponents. Loras won’t have to hit the long ball to be successful, rather the exact opposite could be their secret to success. As long as they can get base runners, they have shown throughout the course of the season to be aggressive on the basepaths, resulting in a number of manufactured runs. Their biggest obstacle this weekend will be limiting the number of unproductive at-bats. If they can do that, they have a real good chance of playing on Saturday for the title.

SIMPSON COLLEGE STORM • 20-20, 12-16 IIAC • No. 5 Seed ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ... Not many freshman players at Simpson made a huge impact on the team but Jake Anctil found a way to make his mark on the team. While he only appeared in nine games on the year, he had the most at-bats out of any freshman with 20. Anctil batted .200 on the year and managed to score three runs with one homerun and five RBIs. The Storm have a lot to look forward to in the coming years with this impact freshman. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER ... Tyler Craig owned the best numbers in a variety of different hitting categories and was a pre-season D3baseball.com Honorable Mention All-American. He was a huge asset for the Storm who enter the Iowa Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed. Craig is a 3-year letterwinner and earned IIAC player of the week honors three times throughout his career. Craig led the team with 28 RBIs and also led the Storm in Slugging Percentage and Batting Average. Tyler Craig will be graduating this spring and hopes to add an IIAC championship to his resume. BOTTOM LINE ... The key to a Storm victory hangs on the backs of Simpson’s five seniors. Michael Chia, Josh Pirtle, Jake Barr, Tyler Craig, and Brett Crable all need to come up big for the Storm in order to cement their legacy. Craig will be leaned on to stay hot and keep up his .336 batting average. Matt Pennings’ right arm will be an important cog in the wheel for the Storm. Pennings led the team with 65.0 innings pitched and posted a 2.35 ERA with six wins on the year. Simpson committed seven more errors on the year than their opponent and if they can avoid fielding mistakes they could see success in the conference tournament.

COE KOHAWKS • 15-22, 11-17 IIAC • No. 6 Seed ROOKIE OF THE YEAR ... The freshman to watch this weekend is Colton Janssen out of Arlington, Iowa. Janssen was a regular in the Kohawks infield this season starting 26 of Coe’s 37 games and appearing in 27. By hitting .291 throughout the regular season, he was the top freshman contributor for Coe on offense. Janssen contributed 8 RBI’s to go along with 3 doubles and a .347 on base percentage, all of which were the highest of any other freshman on the team. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER ... Junior Pitcher and Infielder AJ Reuter was Coe’s most valuable player during the 2013-2014 regular season. Not only did Reuter lead the team with his .388 batting average, he also led the team in slugging percentage, home runs, pitcher wins, and pitcher strikeouts. His .388 average and 40 RBI’s were both good enough to finish in the top 3 for the entire IIAC conference. Reuter was also efficient on the mound finishing 9th in the IIAC in ERA and 7th in strikeouts. In April, Reuter was named Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week as well as the Position Player of the Week for baseball. BOTTOM LINE ... Coe’s key to success for the 2014 IIAC tournament is to take advantage of playing in their hometown of Cedar Rapids. Coe finished 9-6 at home this season and they will need to continue with that positive trend if they want to have a good showing this weekend. Along with playing well at home, Coe must continue their strong finish to the year after winning 4 of their final 6 games. Their first tournament opponent, Central, swept them this season winning all 5 of their matchups. However, Coe was very close to winning in 4 out of the 5 games.
