WELCOME Welcome to the third annual America’s Armed Forces River Parade, taking place on this very special National Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 17, 2014 in San Antonio. Befitting for the city known as Military City, U.S.A., this one-of-a kind parade was created by Paseo del Rio Association in 2012 as a way to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces, both active and retired. I want to thank each and every one of you who have come together as a community to show your pride, honor and love of country. A special thanks to the members of the branches of our country’s military with us today, including our Grand Marshal, Dr. Granville Coggs, surviving Tuskegee Airman and retired San Antonio physician. Active military members, families, and veterans, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the third annual Paseo del Rio Association Armed Forces River Parade presented by Budweiser this 17th day of May, 2014, Armed Forces Day. On behalf of the Paseo del Rio Association and the entire San Antonio community I want to offer our appreciation for the service of all the military personnel, their families, veterans, and civilian support groups that contribute so much to making San Antonio the beautiful city that we all call home. President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. There is nothing more fitting in San Antonio to celebrate this day for those that serve our country centered around one of our cities most treasured aspects. We celebrate you, our military. No other city can claim the title of Military City, USA, a title San Antonio proudly claims. The Paseo del Rio Association is dedicated to promoting, protecting and preserving the River Walk. The men and women serving in our Military do what the Paseo del Rio Association does, except on a WORLWIDE scale, and with great sacrifice. They PROMOTE freedom, both domestically and abroad; they PROTECT the citizens of our country and our allies; and they PRESERVE our freedom and our way of life. Dr. Granville Coggs will serve as the Grand Marshal for this year’s parade. Dr. Coggs entered the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and joined the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, the first group of African-American aviators in the United States armed forces. SALUTE & CELEBRATE THE 2014 AMERICA‘S ARMED FORCE S RIVER PARADE Befitting for the city known as Military City, U.S.A., the one-of-a kind America’s Armed Forces River Parade will consist of 25 professionally- decorated themed floats honoring all branches of service, veterans of recent conflicts, military support groups and more. The military has had a major impact and presence in San Antonio for over a centuryfrom the first military flight in 1910, which took place at Fort Sam Houston, to the 90,000 men and women employed at the city’s four bases it proudly hosts today. It is because of the unparalleled qualities that San Antonio has become nationally recognized as “Military City, U.S.A.” In 2012, the Paseo del Rio Association held the inaugural military river parade, attracting thousands of visitors from across the state to salute and celebrate the men and women of our Armed Forces. This parade was created as a way to honor our service men and women, both active and retired, in a way the nation had never seen before. “The Military River Parade was our way of saying thank you for your service to our country, and for protecting our freedom and way of life,” says Nancy Hunt, Executive Director of the Paseo del Rio Association. This celebratory parade has now become a highly anticipated event in communities throughout the country, with more than 55 cities signed on to air the syndicated broadcast of the parade happening right here in Military City, U.S.A. The Parade will also be broadcast on the Pentagon Channel, gathering international coverage as the Pentagon Channel shares the event with its global network of viewers. In addition to the parade, the Paseo del Rio Association honors our Armed Forces through The Yellow Ribbon Project. The Yellow Ribbon Project is an initiative during which friends, families, businesses and organizations in San Antonio and across the country have the opportunity to purchase large Yellow Ribbons that will festoon the trees along the River Walk in honor or memory of those who serve, or have served in the Armed Forces. Along with their beautiful display of ribbons, the names of the men and women who have had a ribbon purchased in their honor are listed on page 20 of the parade program.

Grand Marshal
Leading the parade as Grand Marshal this year is Dr. Granville C. Coggs. 2 Army Float Music By: 323rd Army Band The 323rd Army Band “Ft. Sam’s Own” performs an average of 370 performances per year. Fort Sam Houston has been home to military bands since the late 1890’s, including the 2nd Infantry Division Band and the Firth Army Band. “Fort Sam’s Own” is requested frequently for performances ranging from Military Ceremonies to Holiday Concerts. It has been an integral part of the Musical Education of children in the greater San Antonio area and South Texas. “Fort Sam’s Own” has been recognized numerous times of its participation in events in San Antonio, South Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Mexico.

3 The United States Military Veterans Parade Association The USMVPA is a 501 C 3 nonprofit organization established in 2000 and is charted to orchestrate San Antonio’s Veterans Parade held each November on Veteran’s Day. On board are President Delia A. Guajardo and the 2014 Executive Board and former POW’s Oscar Cortez, Jimmy Chavez and Thomas Jimenez and Fil Villarreal.

Initially created in 2001, the program has awarded more than six million them park tickets to service members and their families. Any active duty, reserve or national guardsman representing any of the five service branches is entitled to fee admission under the program.
8 The City Of Universal City Music by Ed and Mel Also known as the “Gateway to Randolph AFB”, Universal City is a dynamic community situated approximately 15 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio, just off Interstate 35 and Loop 1604. Universal City has come a long way since its inception in 1960, and has been recognized for its commitment to excellence and a forward-thinking approach to development and municipal services. 10 United States Navy Music By Navy Band Cruiser America’s Navy has a strong presence here in Military City USA. There are 11 Navy commands located across San Antonio, and that number continues to grow. These 11 San Antonio Navy Commands have anywhere from 7,500 to as many as 10,000 Sailors assigned here annually, depending on Navy student attendance.. As the U.S. Navy’s premier contemporary entertainment ensemble, the Cruisers feature eight of the Navy’s most dynamic performers. Formed in 1999 as a specialty unit of the United States Navy Band, the group takes its name from the Navy’s versatile, flexible, multi-missioned ship – the Cruiser – and the band lives up to their namesake by having the capabilities of playing genres of music ranging from jazz & standards, rhythm & blues, classic rock, adult contemporary and pop as well as original material. 11 Texas A&M San Antonio Texas A & M University-San Antonio is the fastest growing university in the distinguished Texas A & M University System for the fourth year in a row, serving 4,500 students. Music By U.S. Air Force Band of the West The youngest military service, the U.S. Air Force was formed in 1947 after the end of World War II and the country entered an era where airpower was established as a major element of the nation’s defense. The Air Force mission is to “fly, fight and win…in air, space and cyberspace.” San Antonio is headquarters to Air Education and Training Command, the first command, where the Air Force recruits, trains, and educates its members. All Air Force basic trainees enter at Joint Base San Antonio Lackland, the gateway to the Air Force. Also, on the float is an ensemble from the U.S. Band of the West. Airmen assigned to the band are highly trained professional musicians who have dedicated themselves to serving their country through music.

St. Anthony Catholic High School was founded in 1903 as a seminary by the oblates of Mary Immaculate. SACHS challenges students to participate in the total program of the school – an integration of academics, athletics, Christian Services, community activities, and spirituality. SACHS has a 100 percent graduation and college attendance rate, and students take college courses their junior and senior year at the University of the Incarnate Word. The International Thespian Yellow Jacket Troop is aboard the float. These students have raised $2,000 for ARTS SA and several thousand pounds of food for charities and the homeless.
