San Antonio has something for you this Summer! San Antonio is off to a welcomed cool start to the summer. May and June were warm, but

not hot. The dog days of summer must be just around the corner, but it matters not because we have you covered for fun in the sun. For me personally, enjoying the simple things of bathing in the sun while enjoying any one of my favorite raspas (snow cones). For summer weekends, I try to free my inner child and venture to one of the amazing waterparks or nearby rivers, as summer is always full of adventure. Of course July enjoys one of the grandest entries of all the months with Independence Day. The Fourth of July is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions and more. If you are looking for an all American staple such as a hamburger, you don’t’ have to travel far! In San Antonio, there are some amazing burger joints, offering burgers that ooze with cheese (and refried beans if you’re doing it right)! Some of the best around are conveniently located on the River Walk! Charlie Wants A Burger allows you the opportunity to enjoy a burger with your fur baby in tow. Having saved just enough room for desert, make sure to partake in the sweet treats you’ll find along the River Walk and downtown, such as raspas, paletas, gelato or ice cream. Now that school is out for the summer, take the kiddos to cool off at a water park or explore downtown. It always makes me so happy to see kids eyes grow large with excitement when they venture to the Buchkorn museum and Saloon for the first time, or when they make their way through the Children’s Museum. Whether you’re coming from near or far, San Antonio has something for you this summer! Have an adventure, enjoy the food and take in some fun in the sun! Enjoy!

Boudros

The Republic of texas Mouth-watering, juicy, meaty, yummy, relaxing river view and delicious…does a BURGER on the RIVERWALK come to mind? It may surprise you, but you can get one of the tastiest burgers in town, right in the heart of downtown, on the San Antonio River Walk. Do you have a pet that you take (almost) everywhere with you? Do you have a hankering to take a burger challenge and possibly win the burger you just heartily consumed? Or maybe you like a little sports or SPURS action while eating? Well, then Charlie Wants a Burger Sports Bar is just the place for you to do it all! Located on Losoya Street on the River, this burgerhappening spot showcases over 10 house specialty burgers using Angus and special smoked beef and features their special 2lb burger which comes with a challenge. Eat this massive burger with all the toppings and accompanied fries and the meal is free! $28.99 free! Can you do it? Other offerings on the menu include steaks, salads, hotdogs, homemade milkshakes and more plus an extensive margarita, cocktail, draft beer and wine list. Happy hour and reverse Happy Hour are also available to please everyone. For your furry friend who is allowed on the riverside patio, grab a doggy bag to-go or pup merchandise filled with treats and more with 10% of proceeds that benefit the San Antonio Humane Society. You’ll just have a doggone good time! Do you need to eat your burger with a little bit of rock-n-roll? Or how about being near a lot of celebrity memorabilia surrounding you while you listen to some Ozzy Ozbourne who only in recent years was allowed back into our city. You’ll have to Google why! Featuring three patios on which to eat, drink and listen is the infamous Hard Rock Cafe where eating is only just a part of the party! Every burger except the Veggie Burger is made with premium USDA ground Angus beef and comes on a brioche bun with fries and a

special sauce to savor. Check out the Local Legendary Burger or the FIESTA Burger, both with a spicy, seasoned flair, reminiscent of our heritage in the Alamo City. Open 11:00am till late, you can party on eating, drinking and enjoying the sights and sounds of the San Antonio River Walk while enjoying a bit of rock-n-roll, because “being a rockstar has its privileges”. If you want a little history and authentication surrounding your River Walk burger experience, try firsthand one of the originals on the River Walk dining scene, The Republic of Texas where they have been serving up burgers and more since 1975. Located in the historic Clifford Building and the office of the “father of the River Walk” Mr. Robert.H.H Hugman, the ideas for River Walk dining and more originated from him and here. Featuring flame-grilled burgers cooked and seasoned Texas-style, tradition abounds in this special restaurant where you can also take dining on another level and ON the river! Enjoy a two hour dining cruise or a one and a half hour cocktail cruise along the sights and sounds along the San Antonio River. Featuring Southwestern Texican cuisine, Mexican plates or Southern Favorites including burger specialties, there is something for everyone to enjoy on this unique experience.

patio and savor their original and re gi o nall y - inspire d cooking that food aficionados would appreciate. Their one and only Boudro’s Burger is a 1/2 lb mesquite grilled black Angus beef, white cheddar cheese, Chile-pickled onions, ripe tomatoes, avocado salsa and fire fries feast for the eyes. — Jim Bowie

Had Boudro’s been serving on the River Walk back then, Jim Bowie could have carved his Center Cut Top Sirloin with a butter knife. Prime steaks, Gulf Coast seafood and the best Margaritas around have made Boudro’s one of the Alamo City’s most loved restaurants. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

Tour San Antonio Like A Local

Foods of

SAN ANTONIO San Antonio’s Cultural Cuisine While visiting San Antonio, expand your palate with many of the area’s unique foods that celebrate the city’s cultural and ethnic heritage. San Antonio is fast becoming a food destination city full of new restaurants, celebrity chefs and a fusion of cuisines that have grown from the many cultures that make San Antonio the melting pot that it is. Expand your food horizons while visiting San Antonio and sample these local and regional favorites throughout the area’s many restaurants, food booths and vendors that the city offers.

Gorditas

Barbacoa

Agua Fresca

Meaning “little fat ones” in Spanish, gorditas are small cakes made out of nixtamalized corn dough (masa). Gorditas are typically fried or baked on a steel griddle (comal). After cooking, the gordita is drained of excess grease, then slit on one side and filled with a variety of ingredients, including pork or chicken stew, shredded beef, beans, cheese, rajas (strips of roasted chiles), potatoes, chorizo sausage. Gorditas are often eaten as a midday meal and accompanied by several typesof salsas.

Super tender, moist beef that cooks for hours, either by steaming of roasting. In Central Texas, barbacoa is often made with a whole cow’s head, with the cheeks being the choice cut. It is served in corn or flour tortillas, with a spicy salsa, chopped onion and fresh cilantro as garnish, usually for breakfast or brunch. In Central Mexico, barbacoa is traditionally made with lamb or goat, baked in a hole dug in the ground and covered with agave leaves.

These non-alcoholic beverages are popular year round and especially coveted in the hot days of summer. They are made by blending water and sugar to taste with a number of seasonal and tropical fruits, including lime, strawberry, mango, cantaloupe, tamarind, melon, or pineapple. Other exotic flavors like hibiscus flower and horchata, made with rice and cinnamon, are traditional, and modern interpretations may add fresh herbs and interesting combinations.

Breakfast Tacos

Flan

Anticuchos

The most portable breakfast in all of San Antonio, consisting of scrambled eggs with a variety of added ingredients, all rolled in a flour tortilla. Popular additions to the egg are chopped ham, breakfast sausage, chorizo (Mexican spicy sausage), cheese, beans, potatoes, or a combination of three or more ingredients. Add some spicy or mild salsa and take your breakfast to go.

A custard of Spanish origin, made with eggs, milk, and sugar, flavored with vanilla and topped with caramel. Flan is denser that traditional custard, and may even have a cheesecake-like consistency. The caramel is made first, then poured in the bottom of the pan and cooled before adding the warm custard. After baking, the flan is unmolded upside down do the caramel is on top and drizzles down the sides.

Popular and inexpensive street fare found on street-carts and food stalls in Andean countries. They are similar to the better-known shiskabobs, consisting of small pieces of grilled skewered meat (beef, chicken, pork, or a combination) marinated in vinegar and spices. Anticuchos may also have a variety of vegetables. They may be served with a mojo sauce for dipping, traditionally made with garlic, onion and cilantro chopped, vinegar, lemon juice and beer.

Enchiladas

Pan Dulce

Menudo

These lightly fried corn tortillas are doused in a sauce, then filled with a variety of fillings, from shredded or ground beef to chicken, cheese, or vegetables. The filling is rolled inside the tortilla, and the enchiladas are served with more sauce on top, garnished with shredded cheese, sour cream and/or diced onion. The most common enchiladas are verdes (in green sauce) andr rojas (in a tomato-based sauce.

Traditional Mexican sweet pastries, which have wide appeal amongst all ethnic groups in South Texas. They are usually eaten at breakfast or late supper accompanies by coffee or hot chocolate. Some popular offerings include polvorones (soft crumbly cookies), mantecadas and panquecitos (miniature round poundcakes, marranitos (piggyshaped cookies made with raw cane sugar), orejas (palmiers), and conchas (spongy cakes iced in various pastel colors).

This spicy Mexican stew is not for the faint of heart. A classic hangover cure for the morning after, menudo is made with beef stomach (tripe) served in a broth with a red chili pepper base. Garnishes like lime, chopped onions, chopped cilantro, crushed oregano and crushed red chili peppers are served on the side for each diner to add to taste. Menudo is usually accompanied by warm corn tortillas.

FIESTA NOCHE DEL RIO CAPTURES CITY’S DIVERSE CULTURE IN LIVE PERFORMANCES Musicians, Dancers and Vocalists Perform On Scenic Outdoor Stage In Historic La Villita Special Patriotic Salute To San Antonio’s Diverse Culture July 3 - 5 Since 1957, Fiesta Noche del Rio patrons have lined the banks of the San Antonio River at the Arneson River Theater to savor the summer outdoor spectacular featuring San Antonio artists performing the music, song and dance of Mexico, Spain, Argentina and Texas. Fiesta Noche del Rio, a fast-paced, interactive professionally produced show has been seen by more than one million visitors from around the world and raised more than $2.5 million for local children’s charities through the efforts of the Alamo Kiwanis Club Charities, Inc. As the oldest continuing outdoor performance of its kind in the United States, and the only stage production produced by the Alamo Kiwanis, all of whom are volunteers, Fiesta Noche del Rio supports the educational, social, physical and emotional needs of our community’s youth. The audience sits on the grass-covered steps of the theater. A nearby stone bridge is often made part of the performance space. It is now called Rosita’ Bridge in honor of Rosita Fernandez, a

pioneer of Tejano music, who performed here as star of the summer-long Fiesta Noche del Rio for almost 25 years. Today Rosita’s vision continues under the leadership of Elizabeth (Lisa) SanchezLopez who now serves as the director, choreographer and lead female singer. A respected dance artist and educator, Lisa was instrumental in the opening of two attractions in our community – Sea World of Texas and Fiesta Texas – as a performer, choreographer and dance consultant. In 2012, Lisa was inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame for her local contributions to the arts and education. She has played the role of Diana Morales in “A Chorus Line” and was dance coordinator for the 1993 Olympic Festival. With a stellar cast of musicians, dancers and vocalists, the rich, cultural heritage of San Antonio is brought to the stage for 28 performances in the breathtaking Arneson River Theater with the charming San Antonio River running through the beautiful outdoor venue.

Last year San Antonio experienced its thirdhottest summer in history––three months consisting of more than 40 days of triple-digit temperatures and 11 record highs. But don’t let yourself melt in the midst of this summer’s languid Southern heat. Instead, rejuvenate in the sweetest way possible. From refreshing and icy to cold and creamy, here are a few not-to-miss San Antonio sweet stops guaranteed to keep you cool during the sweltering summer.

El Paraiso Ice Cream Cool off with one of El Paraiso’s ice cream and fruit bars, made from the most simple and natural ingredients: real milk and fruit. But El Paraiso Ice Cream offers its loyal customers more than just ice cream and fruit bars––this family-owned and -operated business has become a piece of San Antonio’s culture. “El Paraiso Ice Cream is part of our Mexican cultural here in San Antonio,” says Maggie Flores, the daughter of owner Jose Flores. “My mother, Maria Flores, decided to label our ice cream bars with the American flag in honor of the fallen of September 11 and the brave. The American flag wrapping also represents the American dream of being successful. I am very proud of my parents and how they created a product that identifies with being Mexican and American.” What is now a successful San Antonio business operating from its blue-and-white manufacturing

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

and retail store located on Fredericksburg Rd. began as a pushcart (paletero) operation in the 1980s. Now, Flores says San Antonio rarely sees paleteros in the summer’s brutal heat but customers can still rent one with the purchase of 200 or more bars to add a nostalgic and fun element to their event, party or community fundraiser. Combinations and ratios perfected in El Paraiso’s original recipes make them one of the most lipsmacking parts of summer. During those steamy months, El Paraiso makes thousands of ice cream bars and fruit bars daily to keep up with demand. The most popular ice cream bars are strawberry, coconut, chocolate and cookies-n-cream while the best selling fruit bars are lemon and watermelon. “El Paraiso means paradise in Spanish,” says Flores. “In this hot Texas heat, El Paraiso Ice Cream is truly Paradise.” www.elparaisoicecream.com

Ben & Jerry’s on the River Walk Celebrating 10 years on the River Walk, this local Ben & Jerry’s shop scoops two dozen homemade ice cream flavors and bakes and dips its waffle cones on site daily––creating a pretty sweet place to escape the heat. “We have a blast with our guests,” says Jon Goodman, chief scooper. “So many of them have their own Ben & Jerry’s stories, either because they met Ben or Jerry, they visited Vermont and had ice cream straight from the production RIO Magazine 33

line or they have a flavor that they loved that is now in our ‘Flavor Graveyard’ and want us to bring it back.”

as school is out, it’s not hard to find these icy treats from mid-morning until the around 5:30 in the evening.

From the beginning, Ben & Jerry’s has paved the way for making all-natural supreme ice cream known for its slew of innovative and fun concoctions as well as its dedication to using non-GMO ingredients. From its famous Cherry Garcia and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough to the company’s most recent flavors of Hazed & Confused and Salted Caramel Blondie, Ben & Jerry’s knows how to keep its customers cool and happy.

Francesco’s Gelato

“One thing is for sure, whoever visits, we know they will leave with happy taste buds and a smile,” says Goodman. www.benjerry.com/ riverwalksouth

Refreshing Raspas at Alamo Plaza Each summer, lines of customers form on the corners of Alamo Plaza waiting to get their eager hands on refreshing raspas (snow cones). These crushed ice, syrup-flavored sweet treats are the best thing you can find in a cup when the summer heats up. Grab a spoon, a straw and start shoveling and you will literally feel the heat escape from your body. A handful of vendors at Alamo Plaza sell raspas, and as soon

While in the area, don’t miss a visit to Francesco’s Gelato, which opened its doors at 211 Alamo Plaza two years ago and has attracted a steady stream of customers ever since. Pizza, a pasta of the day and specialty coffees are on offer too, but it’s Francesco’s deliciously creamy homemade gelato that has captured San Antonio’s cravings.

which one to dig into. Francesco’s Mexican Vanilla is one of its signature flavors, a creamy delight made with real vanilla from Mexico. Other popular flavors include mango, chocolate, dolce de leche and stracciatella, a vanilla-based gelato with chocolate folded into layers. “We try to have pans ready and stay on top of it, but we do sell out on our top flavors sometimes–– especially in the summer,” she says. “It is so hot outside, and our gelato is so refreshing.” (210) 228 9577

“We make our gelato daily at the store,” says owner Kathy Sepulveda. “It’s made with the freshest ingredients like real fruit and cream.” Sepulveda says the fresh, natural ingredients make gelato healthier than your run-of-the-mill ice cream––but the real crave-factor can be found in the unparalleled flavor. “When you are eating an ice cream, you taste the flavor at first but then you lose it as you go,” says Sepulveda. “But with gelato, the flavor tastes from the first spoon to the last spoon. You get that continuous flavor with each and every bite, and I think that is what really sets our gelato apart from ice cream.” With 22 flavors to choose from at all times, the most difficult part of your day can be deciding

Tour San Antonio Like A Local

S G O D MAD B U P H S I T I BR ole By. M. Nic

When you’re a pub that thinks it’s a club, some might say you’re in the middle of an identity crisis. Others would say rock on! If you’re looking for just the right combo of great food, good fun, relaxing atmosphere, and some good lookin’ guys and gals in kilts, then MadDogs British Pub is the place for you. Originally founded in 1984 in Hong Kong, China, MadDogs arrived in the United States in 1995 and opened its doors for business in its beautiful river walk location, directly under the Hyatt Regency Hotel. MadDogs is an authentic British theme pub, famous for their fish and chips, and inside you’ll find authentic British pub décor, telephone boxes, letter boxes, Union Jacks, and servers in kilts! Outside, the patio at Mad Dogs is the perfect spot to enjoy the sights and sounds of the river walk. Take in the excitement of a river parade, wave to passersby enjoying a Rio San Antonio boat cruise, or simply people watch. The shaded terrace provides the perfect escape from the Texas heat. Of course, the best way to escape the heat is with a cool drink. Mad Dogs offers a full range of draft and bottled imported beers, British draught beers, an extensive collection of domestic offerings, and exciting and unique cocktails. 38 RIO Magazine

Pair your beverage of choice with delectable British favorites like cottage pie, bangers and mash, and scotch eggs. Or, you can always stick to tried and true classics like mouthwatering steaks and burgers or fresh salads and sandwiches. Now that your belly is full, and your thirst quenched, take some time to enjoy a game of pool, or try your luck at one of the bar video games. You can also take advantage of the 16 HD screens and 2 jumbo screens, and catch a game or two. There’s not a bad seat in the house! And be sure to take some time to browse the Wall of Fame. Anybody who’s anybody has visited MadDogs, and the Wall of Fame is full of visiting celebrities’ pictures and signed dollar bills. Adding to the fun is MadDogs lineup of 7 nighta-week entertainment. Beginning at sundown each night, you’ll enjoy a great mix of live bands, dj’s, karaoke, comedy performers and more. You’ll want to keep an eye out for the month’s theme party as well, which have included toga

parties, super hero parties, pajama parties and luaus. On July 27th, MadDogs will host a Doctors & Nurses party. The combination of food, fun and atmosphere is credited for MadDogs being a destination for military patrons. On any given Friday night, you’ll find groups of servicemen and women enjoying time out on the River Walk. Be sure to take a moment to thank them for their service. MadDogs British Pub is a proud sponsor of the Military River Parade, which takes place each year on Armed Forces Day, the third Saturday of May. They also participate in a number of other river walk events, including various pub crawls and the Taste of the River Walk in September. So if you’re looking for a cool time at a hot location, be sure to add a stop at MadDogs to your river walk itinerary. For a list of upcoming events, visit maddogs.net or call 210-222-0220. You can also have some fun on the website by checking out the “British Slang Translator”, alright mate?

Water Water Everywhere By Beth Bond

It’s a recurring moment throughout every Texas summer: the point at which the heat blazes so brain-meltingly that you’re left with a single motivating thought. “Jump. In. Water. NOW!” Here in Central Texas, we’re well-practiced at keeping cool in 100-degree-plus weather. And with a good number of activity-filled waterparks and naturally beautiful rivers to float nearby, it’s a lot of fun! Grab your swimsuit, sunblock and flip-flops to try one of the top four spots to cool down in San Antonio.

Aquatica San Antonio

Splashtown

Combining water slides and rides with sea life encounters, Aquatica San Antonio is located inside the gates of SeaWorld. The park’s signature attraction, Stingray Falls, takes four-seater rafts down twists and turns to an underwater grotto, where riders come face-to-fin with stingrays and tropical fish. Feed or wade in the water with stingrays (they’re actually perfectly safe!) or visit the newest attraction, Roa’s Aviary: 13,500 square feet of about 300 birds representing more than 50 species. Guests can float, wade or walk among hundreds of tropical birds.

Three minutes from the hot pavement of Downtown San Antonio are 20 landscaped acres of cool, clean water excitement called Splashtown, a family waterpark with more than 50 rides and attractions. Hop into the wave pool and it’s like having a beach in the middle of the city. Or, if you’re more daring, take a turn on the Lonestar Luge, a sevenstory, Texas-sized water bobsled ride that’ll send you through tubes more than two football fields in length. And starting at sunset Friday evenings throughout the summer, swim up to the wave pool for Friday Night Dive-In Movies.

Floating the Guadalupe & Comal Rivers

Floating down Central Texas rivers while lounging in a wide inner tube is a summertime tradition for families and groups of friends. Several outfitters have staked out spots along the Guadalupe and the Comal to rent tubes for float trips. On the Guadalupe, choose whether you want a one-, two- or three-hour trip and hop in and float until reaching the clearly marked Fourth Crossing. Get out there and you’ll find a phone on top of a hill where you can call for a shuttle back to a rental spot. It’s generally a relaxing way to spend a day but, depending on water flow, you might find rapids and boulders to paddle around. For a less intense float, there’s the Comal River, said to be the shortest navigable river in the United States. Thousands flock here each year for refreshing river fun. Be sure to read up on rules for coolers, bottles and cans before you go. For a full list of river outfitters, visit the directory at innewbraunfels. com.

4 Schlitterbahn Located just 32 miles north of San Antonio in New Braunfels — a town that excels at summer fun to the point that walking around town with wet hair in a bathing suit is accepted as part of daily life — Schlitterbahn has been voted the world’s best waterpark for 16 years in a row. Its 70-plus acres are nestled along the banks of the picturesque Comal River. Thrill seekers will love the Master Blaster Uphill Water Coaster or the Black Knight, an enclosed, 550foot water slide tunnel that sends riders splashing through twists and drops in the dark. Little ones can splash safely in Polywog Pond Kiddie Park or Sea Creature Cove. At Schlitterbahn, vacationers of all ages can find either adventure or relaxation while discovering why it’s known as “the hottest, coolest time in Texas.” schlitterbahn.com/new-braunfels 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 7-Aug. 17 400 N.
