FABULOUS SAN ANTONIO As a local San Antonian, I grew up experiencing school field trips to the Alamo, treks along the River Walk and frequent visits to the San Antonio Zoo and the five missions—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As an adult, I’ve taken my own children many times, with an expanded list that includes theme parks, museums, Market Square, the Tower of the Americas and so much more. I’ve watched San Antonio grow in a responsible and sustainable way, preserving our cultural heritage while elevating our entertainment, culinary and arts scenes, and enhancing our land resources in areas such as the Mission Reach, which is thought to be the largest urban ecosystem restoration in the country’s history. As UNESCO states: “San Antonio is a crossroads of geography, geology, fauna, civilizations and cultures.” With more than 15 miles of River Walk to stroll, 14,000 hotel rooms in our beautiful, downtown area alone, history on and around every corner, and celebrity chefs making San Antonio a culinary destination, you’ll understand why us locals think our city is fabulous.

La Gloria

summer flings for t he palate by Kimberly A. Suta

There’s no better place to have a summer fling right now than San Antonio! Light, flavorful bites are just waiting to entice you around every corner. With gardens ripe with seasonal fruits and veggies and a host of chefs with fresh, colorful inspirations, there’s no telling where these flings Jardín

will take you, but they’re bound to be memorable.

JARDÍN Located at the stunning San Antonio Botanical Garden, Jardín is taking full advantage of the vibrant summer bounty with a variety of scintillating mezze plates, which can be mixed and matched to the table’s liking in orders of three, six or nine. With 16 small sharable plates to choose from, including Roasted Red Beets, Garden Bruschetta, White CheddarStuffed Dates, Sicilian Cauliflower, BologneseStuffed Arancini and a Crudité of veggies sourced from the Garden itself, the only challenge is deciding what to eat.

LA GLORIA If your heart desires something a little spicier, take a date or your favorite friends to La Gloria at the historic Pearl, where Chef Johnny Hernandez is always turning up the heat with his authentic street foods inspired by the diverse regions of interior Mexico.

Jardín is the newest offering from San Antonio celebrity chef Jason Dady, located in the old Sullivan carriage house and featuring a menu of bright Mediterranean dishes. Large windows with natural light, décor from the original carriage house and a marble bar only add to the incredibly charming farmhouse ambiance. Every Wednesday evening, guests can enjoy live jazz music on the patio, enveloped by the Garden’s trees and twinkling lights. Sounds like a romantic place to start a fling, doesn’t it?

My favorite summer dish is always going to be the fish tacos, of course! The Pescado Baja Califas are prepared either battered or grilled on three freshlymade mini corn tortillas with a cabbage slaw, pico de gallo and a not-too-spicy chipotle crema. Do yourself a favor and add a few slices of avocado for the perfect bite.

As we reach the peak of summer, it’s the perfect time to nosh on a fresh ceviche, such as La Gloria’s Ceviche Verde made with tilapia, tomatillos, green olives, onions and lime juice or the Camarones Agua Chile made with shrimp in fire water.

IRON CACTUS Along the River Walk, another favorite go-to is Iron Cactus for its yummy Baja Fish Tacos and Veggie

Enchiladas. It’s been serving up contemporary Mexican food for more than 20 years now. The Veggie Enchiladas are made with a velvety charred tomato butter sauce and sun-dried tomatoes and are accompanied by a fluffy cilantro-lime rice and charro-style black beans. Iron Cactus also offers a wide range of summer salads, from the new Grilled Romaine Salad, to which you can add some pepper-crusted tuna, to the Citrus Baby Spinach Salad for a meal that will keep you in swimsuit shape. If you’re on the go, grab a few margaritas to-go while meandering along the River Walk for some shopping and sightseeing.

OSTRA Also along the River Walk, you can enjoy some fine dining and exquisite cuisine at Ostra, located inside the Mokara Hotel & Spa. With a sustainable seafood menu of new exotic dishes and local’s favorites, an acclaimed Oyster Bar featuring the freshest oysters, crab, shrimp, clams and ceviche, not to mention an impressive selection of specialty tequilas and mezcals, it’s always a top pick for a lovely meal throughout the year, but especially during summer when seafood shines. An ideal summer dish is their Gulf Fish Ceviche made with red pepper aguachile and served with housemade tortilla chips, which pairs

nicely with the Citrus Bergamot Spritz. If you want to go for the gusto, try the Seafood Tower built sky high with oysters, chilled shrimp, snow crab claws, ceviche and lobster tails. I’ll take two, please! BOUDRO’S TEXAS BISTRO Finally, Boudro’s Texas Bistro is a must any day of the week and twice on Sunday, whether it’s rain or shine. They have a patio perfect for peoplewatching right along the River Walk but this place gets poppin’, so be sure to make reservations or get there early. Everyone’s favorite is always the tableside guacamole. Made right before your eyes, this Southwestern delicacy doesn’t get any better with perfectly ripened avocados, freshsqueezed lime and orange juices, roasted and charred Roma tomatoes, Serrano peppers, red onions and cilantro. It’s a must for first-time visitors. For dinner, dig into their MesquiteGrilled Quail made with an allnatural Texas quail drizzled with a chipotle demiglace and served with uber creamy pepper jack grits. Boudreaux’s Shrimp and Grits or Seared Scallops are always a good choice. After a light dinner and a few famous prickly pear margaritas, it’s time to hop on a GO RIO Cruises river boat and learn more about our majestic Alamo City!

In 1964, a song called “Downtown” was a hit on billboard charts across the United States and abroad, not just because it had a catchy tune, but because its lyrics rang true.

The lights are much brighter there You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares So go downtown…everything’s waiting for you.

ICE COLD IN AUGUST After such exciting encounters with sea creatures, why not pop over to Justin’s Ice Cream Company, also located at the Shops at Rivercenter, to give the kids a true taste of authentic Italian-style ice creams on a hot summer day? FAMILY FUN

...everything’s waiting for you short trips and quick adventures around town. Bike Share SA differs from a traditional rental program because families can dock the bike at any B-station and grab another when they’re ready to ride again. With individual ride times up to an hour, it’s easier than ever to explore downtown. Bikes are available from 6:00am to 11:00pm daily. Riders can purchase a day access pass, monthly or annual memberships. Day access and monthly pass rides are subject to 60-minute check-ins to avoid usage fees. Currently, unlimited 60-minute trips are just $11, and one trip for up to 30 minutes is only $3.75, so your family can have an early-morning bike ride to beat the heat, or enjoy a cool breezy evening bike ride. See the Alamo, La Villita Historic Arts Village or visit fun places like the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum, which is where I’d suggest heading next after peddling up an appetite.

The Buckhorn Saloon

MOSEY ON OVER TO THE BUCKHORN SALOON Most folks think of the Buckhorn Saloon and Museum as a family fun stop because of all the museum offers, and surely the attractions there are worth seeing. However, some forget that it’s also a good place to feed your posse at the Buckhorn Saloon and Bar. With burgers, chicken fingers, salads and sweets, plus icy prickly pear margaritas or draft beers for mom and dad and sodas, iced tea and lemonade for kids, this is a fun stop. The atmosphere is kitschy and Texan and fun, but it’s also historic, as the Buckhorn Saloon is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders and it’s rumored that Pancho Villa planned the Mexican Revolution. Many original furnishings still adorn the Buckhorn Saloon, including the back-bar that was handcrafted of marble and cherry wood. Give kids a fun and interesting look at the past while feeding them kids’ favorites of today. HORSE AROUND What’s the best way to end the perfect downtown day? Why a horse-drawn carriage ride, of course; there’s nothing more thrilling for kids or more romantic for mom and dad. See the downtown from an entirely different perspective in one of the lighted carriages waiting for your family near Alamo Plaza and beyond. Clippity-clop along the historic streets of the city, see the Alamo in the moonlight and view the River Walk below from a bridge. By night, the city sparkles.

How to Be a

San Antonian (Or Not Your Mother’s Etiquette, Y’all) By Susan Yerkes

San Antonio might just be the friendliest city you’ll ever visit, from the first “Howdy!” you hear to the last “Y’all, come back.” Folks here don’t stand much on fancy manners. There’s not much use for Emily Post here. Use any fork you like, or just roll up your vittles in a tortilla. There are even Ambassadors roaming downtown just to help you. If you’re looking for advice on where to turn, what to do or how to handle a situation, look for a yellow shirt—the sign of a Centro San Antonio’s official Ambassador guides. Just about the worst criticism a visitor will get is a gentle, “Y’all must not be from here.” As welcoming and laid-back as this town is, it has its own distinctive culture and customs. To maximize the fun, here’s a guide to simple San Antonio etiquette. RIVER WALK RULES As cool and inviting as the San Antonio River looks on a hot day, don’t even think about swimming in it. It’s against the law, even if you enjoy the taste of duck poop. Park rangers are there for your protection, but they won’t hesitate to ticket you.

click on this: CENTRO SAN ANTONIO www.Centrosanantonio.org DOWNTOWN TUESDAY www.Downtowntuesday.com PARIS HATTERS www.Parishatters.com RIVER WALK ACCESSIBILITY www.Sanantonio.gov/DAO/ Publications-and-Maps/River-WalkMaps-and-Accessibility SAN ANTONIO BIKE SHARE www.Sanantonio.bcycle.com

Do feel free to meander the river with your margarita in hand. Open alcoholic beverages are allowed on the River Walk. Enjoy! But finish your drink before you return to street level. Minimize the horseplay—it can get crowded, and unintentional swimming is, well—swimming. You don’t want to drop stuff in the water either—having a couple of friends hang onto your legs while you try to fish it out is not recommended. Dogs are welcome, on a leash.

SCOOTER REGULATIONS www.Sanantonio.gov/scooters

WHEELS Don’t ride your bike, scooter or skateboard on the downtown part of the River Walk, the plaza or through downtown parks. Riding on sidewalks is prohibited—look for bike lanes. And there’s no doubling up—one person to a bike or scooter is the city rule. Do take your bike to the Mission Reach—a beautiful, wildscaped stretch of river south of town. Canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding are also allowed on the Mission Reach.

CULTURE & COMMUNITY Cleto Rodriguez

EAT LIKE A LOCAL Don’t eat the tamal with the corn shuck on. Take a history lesson from President Gerald Ford, who famously made the embarrassing mistake on a ceremonial visit to town. Simply unwrap and enjoy. (By the way, tamal is the singular of tamales—but who can eat just one?)

Yanaguana Gardens

Margaritas involve choices. Be prepared to specify. Frozen or on the rocks? Sugar or salt on the rim? Tortillas—more choices. Corn or flour? It’s okay to ask for butter, or to mop up that delicious enchilada gravy with your tortilla. Eat like a local—take your tortilla from the bottom of the pile. That’s where the warmest ones are. Mariachis—you’ll often find these colorful musicians serenading diners, especially at restaurants along the River Walk or in Market Square. But please be aware: if you ask them to play for you, they’re doing their job. Prepare to tip. $5-$10 per song is a good rule of thumb. THE ALAMO Nestled between high-rise buildings in the historic heart of the city, the Alamo is a hallowed place. That means take off your hat inside the Alamo chapel. Ixnay on food or drinks. It may be a selfie op for you, but it’s The Shrine of Texas Liberty to Texans and Texans at heart, so stash your camera and cell phone when you’re there. No pets, except service animals, are allowed. Ditto smoking, vaping or any tobacco use. And while it should go without saying, do not pee on the Alamo or the plaza outside. Ozzy Osbourne did it once, famously, and got busted for it. Years later he returned, apologized—and donated $10,000 to make up for it. You could end up with a multi-thousand dollar fine and jail time, too. Hallowed, remember? DRESS LIKE A NATIVE San Antonio goes for cool comfort. T-shirts, shorts and flip-flops (we call them “chanclas”) are de rigueur almost everywhere. Forget the tie, but remember the sunscreen. You won’t need boots and a cowboy hat to fit in, but if 30 RIO Magazine

you’re planning on fitting a little boot-scooting into your visit, you’ll find the venerable Paris Hatters, just around the corner from the Alamo. Local guys favor guayaberas (gway-a-berra) style shirts. You’ll find them at downtown Penner’s or Divide and Conquer Denim and Leather. SPOKEN SAN ANTONIAN Courtesy is important here, so you’ll likely hear a lot of “Sir” and “Ma’am.” Possibly “Hon.” Learn to say “howdy” when you meet, and “y’all” anytime. Do not complain about the heat, but do drink plenty of water. MISCELLANEOUS TIPS Do be a Spurs fan. At least while you’re in town. You’ll see a lot of public art downtown. Take all the selfies you want with it, but don’t hang on it, climb on it or play “Game of Thrones” on it. Exception: Hemisfair Park’s fabulous Yanaguana Gardens, where kids of all ages will find tons of fun stuff to play on. Driving in the Hill Country? Raising an index finger off the steering wheel is the Texas “howdy” sign.

When the summer heats up, it’s time to journey into some naturally cool adventures. This month, we are exploring mysterious caverns complete with hidden passages, stalagmites and cool 70-degree cave temperatures. Next, we will check out some breezy attractions above ground, like ziplining. Finally, grab your safari hat because we’re checking out a wildlife expedition from the air-conditioned comfort of your car. The summer may be hot, but there are cool days ahead!

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch

NATURAL BRIDGE CAVERNS® The Natural Bridge Caverns were discovered in 1960 by four college students who decided to take a summer hike. Little did they know that they would find Texas’ premier underground cave attraction. The caverns are named for the naturally occurring 60-foot landbridge made of limestone present at the entrance. The limestone bridge and caverns were exposed after a sinkhole collapsed. Now, we can embark on tours through otherworldly cave formations. This journey is particularly cool because the caves maintain a 70-degree temperature yearround. There are two thrilling tours from which to choose. Ticket prices for the caverns vary by day. Single tours average around $25.00 for adults and $15.00 for children. Combo tours average about $40.00 for adults and $25.00 for children. The Discovery Tour The Discovery Tour is the original and most popular guided cavern tour. Travel through a half-mile stretch of cave tunnels 180 feet below the surface! Your guide will point out ancient rock formations, including stalagmites, stalactites, flowstones, chandeliers and soda straws illuminated by dazzling LED lights.

thesanantonioriverwalk.com

The Hidden Passages Tour The Hidden Passages Tour goes a step further for those who dare to explore deeper into the caves. On this stretch, you will find some of the longest soda straw formations, as well as cave ribbons and welt & turnip shields. Your guide will even turn out the lights so that you can experience total darkness inside the caverns!

SURFACE ATTRACTIONS AT THE CAVERNS Back above ground, there are plenty of cool surface attractions to enjoy at the Natural Bridge Caverns. Grab a snack at the mouthwatering Cavern Cafe, which serves up favorites like pizza, chicken tenders and burgers. Browse the old-timey Big Daddy’s Sweets general store, where they sell homemade fudge, roasted nuts and beer. Once you’ve recharged, we can hit up the rest of the fun! Twisted Trails Zip Rails & Ropes Course We already ventured far below the Earth’s surface. Now, let’s explore all the adventures offered above the treeline! The Twisted Trails Zip Rails & Ropes Course towers 60 feet into the sky. Here, you can test your balance on four levels of suspended ropes. The ropes course includes swinging ropes, rope ladders and tightropes. If you are more into easy-breezy fun, you can traverse over 685 feet of suspended ziplines RIO Magazine

Tickets start at $24.99, with options for the little ones to navigate the Twisted Tykes course or add on a climbing wall excursion. Discovery Village Mining Co. “There’s gold in them thar hills!” A Western cave exploration wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t try our hand at panning for gold. At Discovery Village Mining Co., kids can pan in a series of troughs with screen trays to search for amethysts, rose quartz, emeralds, arrowheads and even fossils. There are dozens of treasures to uncover, with guides to help you identify your finds. After you collect your loot, you can take it home and show it off to your friends. Gem and fossil collection bags start at just $8.99. 34 RIO Magazine

NATURAL BRIDGE WILDLIFE RANCH® Get ready, because our next adventure is going to be wild! The Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is located next to Natural Bridge Caverns and features a Texas-style African safari. Since everything is bigger in Texas, we know this safari will be packed with tons of wild fun. Take your family car on a safari through 450 acres of rolling hills, creek beds and massive live oak trees. Keep your eyes peeled for over 500 animals representing more than 40 different exotic, native and endangered animal species from across the globe. Ostrich, zebra and buffalo all roam free together on this safari and these animal friends will come right up to your car to say hello! The safari trek covers over four miles of trails and typically takes around one to two hours to complete. With admission, your family can take

multiple trips and enjoy the ranch’s Walk-ABout trails. Walking exhibits include the Giraffe Barn, where you can get up close to pet and feed giraffes. Visitors can also explore Lemur Island, a place where ring-tailed lemurs from Madagascar call home. The Peacock Pen offers a beautiful display of feathers which is perfect for a photo op! After all of your explorations from the day, you can chill out at the Trading Post to pick up a souvenir or chow down at the Safari Camp Grill. The grill serves up pizza, burgers and even breakfast for early morning explorers. Admission prices for the safari vary, but they range around $25.00 for adults and $17.00 for children. Remember, one admission price gives you access for the whole day!

PUPPY LOVE

Today we’re living and loving the dog days of summer with activities that include our four-legged brethren. DOGGY STAYCAY Dogs are pack animals, so if you’re going to be out all day, consider booking a little staycation for your fluffy bestie at Lucy’s Doggy Daycare. Your pup will get plenty of playtime with indoor and outdoor parks, walk-in pools to cool the toe beans and dog-friendly playground equipment. And you can even check in on your fur baby via live webcams set up in the play areas.

PARK ‘N BARK Our city has 16 spots around town where your pups can run off-leash. Let Fido free today at Phil Hardberger Park with separate areas for pocket pups and big dogs. The small dog area at the east park has a two-story dog house to climb and the west park has agility equipment for pooches of every size.

Mike’s Dog Store

DOGGY TREATS If you’ve got a diva dog who loves to shop, take him to Mike’s Dog Store. It prides itself on “pawsome” customer service and it’s stocked with super yummy dog-friendly snacks. If you’ve got a very good girl, treat her to a toy of her choice. Or if you’ve got a birthday boy, buy him a pupcake! DOGGY DINING Pet friendly restaurants truly are the best, but The Cove really has it all. Its dog-friendly patio is in perfect proximity to the outdoor bar—the bartenders are happy to pour an ice-cold water on the rocks for your bark buddy. The human food there is sustainable, organic, local and absolutely delish. Get the Blue Bison Burger topped with bacon and blue cheese and ask for a doggy bag to-go.

ACCESSIBILITY No matter how you roll, San Antonio is working to become more accessible for everyone. Here are a few places that are paving the way for people with disabilities. MAP IT OUT  Before you head out, check the City of San Antonio’s disability access office for three River Walk maps that show wheelchair ramps, elevators and accessible paths along the river. You can rent a peoplepowered walker or wheelchair at Tom’s Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Rentals. Or get a power scooter. It’s your vacation. You deserve a motor and a basket. RIDE THE RIVER  Look for the green boxes on the mobility map that mark the boat ticket stations and let the wheelchair-accessible GO RIO™ Cruises boats guide you down the river. Locals get discounted tickets and everyone gets to see Selena Quintanilla’s bridge. SENSORY GARDEN There’s a fresh bouquet of beauty waiting for the visually impaired at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. The enchanting mix of textures thesanantonioriverwalk.com

and scents in the Sensory Garden were specifically planted for people who rely on senses other than sight to receive information. With Braille signage, everyone can read along to learn more about the interesting plants and sculptures in the garden.

GO RIO™ Cruises

SHOW AND TELL The Majestic Theatre offers an innovative app for patrons to experience live performances with subtitles, dubbing, audio descriptions, closed captioning and amplification in their own language. Check the theatre website for specific performances that list the GalaPro captioning service. It’s a mobile app for smartphones and tablets that helps people see and understand performances. If GalaPro isn’t offered, the stage also has a text display that scrolls synchronized words during the performance. The theatre features preferred wheelchair and handicapped seating, and assisted listening devices are available as well.

CULTURE San Antonio was originally a Spanish outpost, so its Mexican-American influence is prominent for sure. But the city also has other cultural influences that are equally celebrated. Vamos! Let’s explore a few. JAPANESE TEA GARDEN One of the most iconic spots in the downtown area is the Japanese Tea Garden. Originally built by prison labor, the garden started as a lily pond in an old quarry. In 1926, local Japanese-American artist, Kimi Eizo Jingu, was invited to move in and he and his family opened a lunch and tea spot called the Bamboo Room. When the Jingu family was evicted in 1942 due to anti-Japanese sentiments, a ChineseAmerican family took over the facility operations. But in 1984, the area was rededicated as the Japanese Tea Garden and you can still get tea and sandwiches at the Jingu House Cafe on site. GERMAN HOUSE TOURS Lederhosen are optional in the King William Cultural Arts District,

but you will be treated to some German culture on one of the self-guided tours of San Antonio’s first suburb. The area was settled by German immigrants and named after Kaiser Wilhelm of Prussia. The trail will take you past ornate mansions like the Anton Wulff house and the Sartor House, where you can take in a heaping helping of history and impressive architecture. AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM One of the city’s newest cultural exhibits is the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum at La Villita Historic Arts Village. Here, visitors are treated to stories about San Antonio’s Black music history, Texas’s Black baseball players and cowboys and the importance of preserving African American burial grounds. Soak up some of the most influential Texas tales in this community-based digital archive and learn the untold stories of African Americans whose influence helped build River City.
