We all know January is the time for making resolutions, mostly with promises of diet and
exercise. For me, I resoundingly reaffirm my solemn pledge each year to eat cake. And not just any cake, but the good stuff, the really good stuff. I attest to this sentiment so wholeheartedly that I think I may be the reincarnated soul of Marie Antoinette. Would you care to join me? 12 RIO Magazine

{well, don’t that take the cake} SCHILO’S Schilo’s, located on street level downtown just above Casa Rio on the River Walk, has been serving up scrumptious German-Texan fare for over a hundred years with breakfast, lunch, and dinner favorites that range from Chicken and Biscuits to Reubens and Grilled Pork Chops. The Original Mexican Restaurant
Bakery Lorraine
Known for their signature root beer, they decided to incorporate it into a dessert by offering a Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake topped with Schilo’s rich Root Beer Ganache. Although it’s a unique flavor combo, customers are loving it and say it’s a great way to top off lunch. This special recipe contains sour cream and coffee, which gives it just a hint of coffee flavor. So good, you might want to have dessert first! IRON CACTUS Nearby, along the River Walk, Iron Cactus has just what you’re looking for if you have a craving for one of San Antonio’s signature desserts. This upscale Mexican grill and margarita bar makes an incredible Tres Leches, a traditional Mexican cake made with three kinds of milk, seasonal fruit, and whipped cream.
This popular cake is incredibly moist and satisfying, enjoyed best with coffee to balance the sweetness. Order their specialty Carajillo Coffee, made with chilled espresso and Licor 43. Conclude your evening with a stroll north on the River Walk to one of San Antonio’s leading destinations, the historic Pearl. With trendy boutiques, some of the city’s top restaurants, and magnificent outdoor space. The Pearl is a must-see – especially for more cake! BAKERY LORRAINE Bakery Lorraine will have your mouth watering from the moment you enter. Serving both breakfast and lunch, it’s an ideal respite from sight-seeing. A pastry shop of dreams, your biggest challenge will be deciding what to order from the glass case, filled with an assortment of delicacies, including their signature macarons to an elegant Opera Cake. The sinfully delicious Opera Cake is comprised of layers of coffee-soaked almond sponge cake topped with brandy syrup and then layered with coffee buttercream and chocolate ganache. You can also order from a variety of stunning whole cakes for special occasions, including Carrot Cake, Vanilla Mascarpone Cake, Chocolate Blackout Cake, Lemon Raspberry Cake, and Confetti Cake. If you’re visiting the Pearl during the weekend, make sure to take a stroll through San Antonio’s most impressive farmers market, which pops up in the square. DEEP RIVER SPECIALTY FOODS There, you’ll also find a treasure trove of treats from local artisan food companies, such as Deep River Specialty Foods, which happens to make some unbelievably yummy cakes – and boozy ones, to boot.

Try one of their other flavors, including the Apple Pecan Whiskey, Chocolate Kahlua, Fuzzy Navel, Golden Amaretto, Limoncello, Rum and Strawberry White Chocolate. If it looks too good to wait, just pop a squat on the lawn and dig in! THE ORIGINAL MEXICAN RESTAURANT When you find yourself back on the River Walk, make sure to stop in the Original Mexican Restaurant for popular Tex-Mex food, and top off your meal with their world-famous Kangaroo Court Cheese Cake, a staple at the restaurant for over 50 years. Almost as tall as the Tower of the Americas, this impressively rich cheesecake is as light as a cloud with a hint of lemon. It comes topped with strawberry sauce, caramel sauce, goldbrick chocolate sauce, or nothing at all if you prefer. KILWINS Now, for something off the beaten path, consider Kilwins, located in Alamo Plaza. This classy confectionary puts Willy Wonka to shame with exceptional high-quality chocolates, ice cream, and
other goodies made in-store. You can watch these sweet wizards create “the perfect” caramel apples, hand-crafted corns and brittles, chocolate-dipped pretzels and Krispie treats, but don’t get distracted if your mission is cake. Kilwins makes heavenly gourmet ice cream cakes. Flavors, including Cookies ‘n Cake, Grasshopper, Signature Turtle, Sea-Salt Caramel, Toasted Coconut, and a Five-Chocolate, made with chocolate cake, chocolate ice cream, hot fudge, chocolate frosting, and Kilwins’ heritage dark shredded chocolate. The freezer case always has a few flavors on-hand, or order a custom flavor. After one slice, your tastebuds are prepared to ascend to heaven.

FAMILY FUN
Baby, It’s Warm Inside! By Janis Turk
San Antonio is more likely to see bright sunshiny days than blustery blue ones, and in January, jeans and T-shirts will usually do. However, if by chance a cold snap brings Jack Frost, families will always find a warm welcome at these four indoor hotspots. NO JACKET REQUIRED The caves of Natural Bridge Caverns, just northeast of San Antonio, are a comfortable place to visit on a winter day because cavern temperatures are a steady 70 degrees yearround with high humidity. Baby, it’s warm inside, so leave your coat in the car.
16 RIO Magazine
Open rain or shine year-round, Natural Bridge Caverns offers young spelunkers a chance to explore two spectacular world-class show caves with safe guided tours through two huge underground chambers. The caves are sure to wow with their centuries-old rock formations: stalagmites, stalactites, flowstones, rock

“chandeliers,” and impressive long “soda straw” stalactites. Exploring a real cave this way can be fascinating, safe, easy, and comfortable. Plus, it’s not scary; the cavern ceilings are so high one isn’t likely to get a sense of claustrophobia. There are lots of steps inside the caverns, and the caverns aren’t completely ADA accessible. Families with strollers, folks with mobility issues, and anyone not up for trekking the stairs may prefer browsing the lobby gift shop or a treat at the snack bar with beautiful Hill Country views. The steps and path are easy and lined with handrails, so if walking isn’t an issue, get a little exercise and enjoy the easy hike. Weather-permitting, Natural Bridge Caverns are also home to some great outdoor options, including its Twisted Trails and the aMAZEn’ Ranch Roundup maze, a ropes course, and zip rails rambunctious kids will enjoy. There’s also a Discovery Village Mining Company and picnic pavilion outside, and those areas offer shelter, too, making them a welcome spot even on rainy days.

Then explore the wonders of the multi-level museum to behold handsome western art by masters like Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, and Frank Reaugh. See some of Texas’ most arresting artifacts and historical items, including Pancho Villa’s ornate saddle, real Apache baskets from the late 1800s, a collection of authentic cowboy spurs, antique firearms, Western art sculptures, RIO Magazine

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK Like a western wonderland, the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum and The Texas Ranger Museum offer “full Texas experience under one roof.” The Buckhorn features an exotic animal collection and snake rattler art to authentic cowboy artifacts and treasures. The exciting Texas Ranger exhibit filed with treasures spanning more than a century of Ranger history, to the saloon where Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders once bellied up to the bar. This place is a wonderful Wild West hideout on a cold day. The café ceiling is strewn with antler racks from when the saloon accepted antlers in place of money for a drink. Visit the gift shop brimming with westernthemed souvenirs. The Buckhorn is a wonderful, warm, indoor experience packed with old-time Texas fun and offers a one-stop big western bang for your buck. THE SKY’S THE LIMIT San Antonio’s most iconic landmark is its lofty Tower of the Americas, a 750-foot high tower featuring an observation deck and revolving restaurant with spectacular views and thrilling 4-D theatre rides on the lower level.

On a cold day, take a glass elevator to the top to make a quick stop at the Flags Over Texas Observation Deck, offering 360-degree views of the
city. However, if it’s windy and cold, you may want to skip the deck and head straight to the Skies over Texas 4D Theater Ride (included in the price of a tower ticket), offering several short sensation-driven film experiences. Through fantastic 4-D technology, your kids can experience what it would feel like to take a high-flying trip across Texas with seats that tilt and vibrate, blasts of air, a water mist, and more. Or, since it’s winter, experience “Ice Age: Dawn of The Dinosaurs,” to see what it’s like to slip, slide, and soar with sub-zero heroes in this 14-minute 4-D theatre experience film. Then visit the gift shop at the tower’s base and have a photo made in front of a unique San Antonio backdrop. Hungry? For a warm and relaxing vibe, check out the rotating Chart House restaurant, set 750 feet above the city with breathtaking views serving an upscale menu featuring great seafood and steaks. Reservations are encouraged for lunch and dinner. The glittering night view is not to be missed. My youngest always ordered the French onion soup and the hot chocolate lava cake dessert. For more casual, affordable, kid-friendly eats, check out the Tower Café. Either way, a visit to the Tower of the Americas will top the kids’ list of favorite winter memories.

No architect has had more impact on San Antonio’s skyline and style of living than Atlee B. Ayres. The 35-story Tower-Life Building located downtown is the only octagonal neo-Gothic skyscraper in the world; it remains one of the city’s most impressive business buildings. He popularized the Spanish Colonial Revival style for residences, including the Atkinson House, now best known as the McNay Art Museum
Fiesta, San Antonio’s biggest annual celebration, can trace its origins back to 1891, but Ayres helped to found the Fiesta San Antonio Commission in 1959 and went on to serve as its first president. As president of the West Texas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, he kick-started the program to restore the Spanish missions in San Antonio, now the San Antonio Missions National Park. In the summer of 2015, the five missions were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage.
Ayres became the state architect of Texas in 1915 and designed several important public buildings in Austin, including the Blind Institute, now the Texas School for the Blind, and the Texas State Office Building. On the University of Texas at Austin campus, he designed Carothers Dormitory and the original Pharmacy Building. He also designed courthouses in the Texas Renaissance style for Cameron County, Refugio County, Jim Wells County and Kleberg County.
Born July 12, 1873, in Hillsboro, Ohio, Ayres moved to San Antonio with his family in 1888. His father, Nathan Ayres, managed the Alamo Flats, a luxury apartment hotel. In 1890, Atlee Ayres went to New York to study at the Metropolitan School of Architecture. At night, he took drawing lessons at the Art Students League and on Sundays studied painting under Frank Vincent Dumont.
In 1923, he helped design the modified Spanish Colonial-style exterior of the Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio, though only the façade survives as the entrance to the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.
Following graduation in 1894, he returned to San Antonio to work for various architects and then moved to Mexico, where he became fascinated by the beauty of Spanish Colonial churches. Returning to San Antonio in 1900, he formed a partnership with Charles A. Coughlin, who died in 1905.
thesanantonioriverwalk.com
He formed a partnership in 1924 with his son, Robert M. Ayres, who attended the School of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. The firm of Ayres & Ayres designed several homes in the Spanish Colonial Revival style for wealthy San Antonians in the new upscale suburbs of Terrell Hills and Alamo Heights. With distinctive red barrel tile roofs, white stucco walls, arched passageways, and enclosed courtyards, Atlee Ayres’ Spanish Colonial casa grande designs usually feature a prominent room, typically a dining room, set at an angle to the central part of the mansion.

Ayres worked with his son, Robert, on the design of the Smith-Young Tower, now owned by the Tower Life Insurance Company. Built in 1929, the Tower Life building remained the tallest structure in San Antonio until the Tower of the Americas was erected for HemisFair in 1968. Gawking at the gargoyles decorating the building’s exterior is a highlight of a San Antonio River Walk cruise. The Tower-Life Building made the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. The “Taj Mahal,” the Administration Building at Randolph Air Force Base and one of the best-known military buildings in the world, is considered to be his masterpiece. The signature soaring white tower conceals a 500,000 water tank. Other projects by Ayres & Ayres include Freeman Coliseum, the Federal Reserve Bank Building, the Plaza Hotel (now the Granada Homes), and remodeling of the Menger Hotel and the St. Anthony Hotel. Several of the commercial buildings by Ayres & Ayres are preserved in the city’s new Downtown and River Walk Historic District. Atlee B. Ayres, dean of San Antonio architects, was the oldest practicing architect in the country when he died at the age of 96 on Nov. 6, 1969.

SHOPPING FUN No Reservations Required By Dawn Robinette
When traveling, one typically chooses hotel accommodations based on three things, location, amenities, and budget. Hotel gift shops never entered into the consideration process; they were merely a necessity to replace items that eluded your suitcase when packing. Boy, have times changed. In San Antonio, shops located within hotels now offer high-end boutique-quality merchandise and gift shopping that may make you rethink your hotel reservation.

The Alamo and Spanish Missions, Mexican food, mariachis, and margaritas are synonymous with the local vibe.” But the city’s fabric has long been woven with the threads of diversity, when combined, create a cultural coat of many colors. The annual Martin Luther King Day march, first held here in 1968, is said to be the largest in the nation. In the last few years, some 300,000 people have come together on the January holiday to commemorate Dr. King’s dream of a more just and equal society with the 2,75 MLK walk on the historically Black East Side. This year the march, like so many other events, was canceled by COVID. DreamWeek, held January 14-24, is another powerful and constantly expanding celebration of brotherhood and civil rights will be going on in San Antonio this month. The 9th annual event features an extraordinary lineup of events focused on the year’s theme of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” This year, the multi-site event, shortened to 10 days, is a mix of more than 100 mostly free indoor, outdoor, and virtual events, with COVID-19 guidelines firmly in place. DREAMWEEK CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS “Blankets of Light,” inspired by Ann Frank’s story and blended into poetry, song, and dance, will be presented on the outdoor stage of Arte y Pasión. Glass workshop “Freedom of the Medium” at Caliente Hot Glass Studio. Shop at a vibrant African-American Market at Blue Star A tour at the San Antonio Botanical Garden Center will focus on the region’s indigenous people and plants. Participate in a free tour of the historic African-American Eastview Cemetery with speakers. Many more events, including powerful dialogues and programs on creating positive and peaceful communities through understanding, are listed on DreamWeek’s website.

Visit a small soupçon, meaning a dash or pinch, of restaurant recommendations among the many places to sample some of San Antonio’s delicious diversity. Dig in! MRS. KITCHEN SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT This café in a neat brick house on the near East Side packs a soul punch, with an R&B soundtrack going all day long. Fried catfish, fried chicken, pork chops smothered in gravy, green beans with generous strips of bacon, cabbage, and collard greens; this is definitely Southern comfort food. Wash it down with a big glass of from the past – Cherry Kool-Aid. TONY G’S SOUL FOOD At Tony G’s, the chef-prepared soul food specialties are served up with a message of harmony and brotherhood. It’s hard to hate with a big plate of chicken and waffles or shrimp and grits in front of you. (Try the chipotle grits – only in San Antonio.) Tender oxtail is a popular favorite. Ditto the fried green tomato BLT. JAPANESE TEA GARDEN AND JINGU HOUSE In the early 1900s, an abandoned quarry near the heart of the city was reimagined into a Japanese-themed public park, with elaborate stone walkways, bridges, lily pond, and Japanese pagoda, where a Japanese-American artist, Kimi Enzo Jingu, opened the Bamboo Room café. In 1942 Jingu’s family was evicted due to anti-Japanese prejudice during World War II. But in 1984, the Japanese Tea Garden was restored to its original identity. Today the park is on the National Register of Historic Places. As part of a 6-million dollar restoration, the koi and aquatic plants breathe life into the pond. The waterfall and elaborate stonework are refreshed and repaired. The Jingu House is reborn as a café, serving light sandwiches and salads and Asian delights, from varied Bento Boxes to Sushi Noodle Bowls. GOLDEN WOK Since 1972 the Golden Wok has delighted diners with fine Chinese cuisine. Start with Ginger Chicken Potstickers, and progress to main dishes like Garlic Black Bean Fish, Classic Peking Duck, Mongolian Beef, or an array of vegetarian entrees. For many, the real star here is the full spread of Dim Sum, from tiny pork spare ribs to sweet lotus paste balls, steamed dumplings, taro root cake, squid, and much more. Go ahead – try the stewed chicken feet – it’s all good.

FANTASTIC FLOATS The Lunar New Year, celebrated in many Asian countries, is celebrated in San Antonio with flair. One of the most memorable sights is the Ford Parade of Lanterns, a unique and strikingly beautiful event on the iconic River Walk. This year it’s planned for Jan. 15-24, an early salute to the Year of the Ox, which formally starts Feb. 12. The 26-foot-long boats, each bearing enormous illuminated lanterns, float throughout the downtown section of the River Walk. Great glowing dragons, pandas, fantastic and colorful flowers, paper umbrellas, and even some lively chili peppers, donkeys, and cacti cast their images on the river as the illuminated procession passes along the water. Floats are accompanied by Oriental music and run between 7 and 9 p.m. each night, weather permitting. Check out the two parade route maps on the San Antonio River Walk website, and use the site’s float tracker to locate the procession’s whereabouts. Then sit back on one of the River Walk’s many heated outdoor restaurant patios with a drink and a meal. (Let your server know you’d like to sit close to the river for the best photo ops.) It’s one more bright, beautiful way to celebrate the colorful cultures that make San Antonio divinely diverse.

Skate, Bike, and Climb Out of 2020 and Into 2021! By Drew Henry
If there’s one thing we know for sure, 2020 has been a rough year, and we all can’t wait to start fresh in 2021. What if I told you you could skate, bike, and even climb your way out of the last year’s doldrums? There’s no better way to refresh our spirit than with a new fitness hobby.
Here are four suggestions - for the old souls, we’re headed to a retro roller rink; for the risk-takers, we’re going to a skatepark; for the fitness enthusiasts, we’re taking a spin class; and for the adrenaline junkies, we’re going rock climbing. Get ready because we can’t wait to roll, spin, and ascend into 2021. It’s time to take on the challenge, so grab your gear, your face mask, and your sense of adventure. Let’s go!
20,000 square foot facility features a classic 50s snack stand, arcade games, a disk jockey playing hits from the disco era through today, and even neon light shows. Skate rental is available as well as lessons. Admission is nominal, ranging from $3 to $10 depending on the night. Skating is a sociable form of exercise for all ages and a great way to enjoy music. Skating feels more like a dance party than a workout.
THE ROLLERCADE Trying something new, especially a new hobby or sport, can be a little intimidating. So why not venture out with a sport that is nostalgic, like roller skating? The Rollecade is a family-owned San Antonio tradition since 1959. In fact, you’ll skate (and fall) on the same hardwood floors since the place opened.
ROSEDALE SKATEPARK Awaken your inner thrill-seeker. Grab your board and get ready to shred because we’re off to the skatepark. Rosedale Skatepark was designed by Gridline Skateparks in 2012 and features 6,000 square feet of half-pipes, handrails, ramps, and pools. Located on the West Side of San Antonio, this park is only a 15-minute drive from downtown. Admission to this public park is free, but it is up to you to supply your own longboard, rollerskates, or BMX bike. This should be a blast! Take a complete 360 from 2020 and start fresh by learning some new tricks like an ollie or heelflip. You may just surprise yourself and become the next Tony Hawk! (We recommend watching some skateboard tutorials on YouTube first through.)
Skating is a great lower-body exercise; working your calves, quad, glutes, and depending on your form, it can even work your core. Like walking or jogging, skating provides a great cardio workout too. Located near the Alamo Quarry Market, this fun spot is just a quick 15-minute drive from downtown. This

Centro San Antonio installed ten new community art installations downtown in 2020. They invite San Antonians to return downtown, witness the displays of local artistic talent, and enjoy the offerings of micro-businesses in the urban core.
CENTRO’S ART EVERYWHERE INITIATIVE BRINGS 10 NEW LARGE SCALEIART P I E C E S DOWNTOWN thesanantonioriverwalk.com
“Downtown is a place for extraordinary experiences, where our memories are made and become the stories we tell. It’s beautiful to see them articulated via art,” said Andi Rodriguez, Vice President of Cultural Placemaking at Centro. “This initiative is not only an opportunity to support local artists but an opportunity to support small and local businesses through an enhanced urban landscape and foot traffic generated by interest in these new pieces.” Centro has commissioned several pieces through this program, including “Elevated Melanin,” the temporary word art at Travis Park written by San Antonio Poet Laureate Andrea Vocab Sanderson in July. “SA Is Amor,” an immense mural on the side of the Traveler’s Hotel on Broadway, was completed at the end of November. “Touch,” a street-level mural on Herwick’s Art Supply building, is a piece by Suzy Gonzalez emphasizing unity in the face of challenges. “Instructions For Use For Adapting To Our State of Constant Change” is a mural on the Maverick Apartments and is a collaboration between Anthony Dean Harris and Justin Parr to offer comfort and stability in the face of a global pandemic.
The mural “And Yet We Bloom” by Kat Cadena now adorns the pedestrian corridor along Houston Street at the Navarro intersection. Further down Houston Street, CPS Energy and Weston Urban have partnered with Centro to create a student nature photo exhibition at the base of Frost Tower across from San Pedro Creek entitled, “Picture Your World.” Rodriguez says that all these new community art pieces were made possible through partnerships with the City of San Antonio, local property owners, and local businesses. “We have committed ourselves more than ever to highlighting the incredible artists and arts industry in San Antonio,” said Matt Brown, Centro CEO. “Downtown is the arts and entertainment epicenter of the city. Art Everywhere allows us to reinforce and expand our special San Antonio culture by complementing the existing arts institutions such as Ruby City, Blue Star, Hemisfair, the Majestic Theatre, The San Antonio River Walk, San Pedro Creek, ArtPace, Hopscotch, The Tobin Center, and the San Antonio Museum of Art- to name a few.” To learn more about Centro’s Art Everywhere Initiative, visit centrosanantonio.org

DAY ONE - CULTURAL EXPLORATION ART TWO WAYS The San Antonio Museum of Art has curated an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, pottery, and pieces from across the globe. To look into the face of an Egyptian woman carved into a bust from 2494 B.C. gives one time to reflect on the passage of time and the continuity of human civilization. Or harness technology to experience SAMA’s virtual programming. The online Art to Lunch experience this month focuses on what art reveals about our aspirations and ideals—a perfect side dish when chewing on the year ahead.

PEOPLE WATCHING AND PRICKLY PEARS There’s hardly a better way to observe the city’s cultural dynamics than sipping a prickly pear margarita and people watching on the sidewalks. Boudro’s Texas Bistro has the perfect ringside seats to all the River Walk action and hands-down the best tableside guac on the river. The secret is a splash of fresh-squeezed oranges and riverside vibes. Outdoor space heaters and serapes keep the chill away. 36 RIO Magazine

WILD WEST WONDERS After lunch, spend a few fascinating hours at the Briscoe Western Art Museum. This gorgeous gallery pays tribute to the American West with all its beauty, struggles, and mystery. Along with three levels of permanent installments, the Briscoe will host a touring exhibition through the middle of January called VISUAL VOICES: Biga on the Banks Contemporary Chickasaw Art. This display of almost 60 works of art from present-day Chickasaw painters, potters, sculptors, metalsmiths, and weavers tells a compelling story of its people. BREAK BREAD Rooted in culture and tradition, Biga on the Banks is a San Antonio icon that continues to surprise and delight even the most loyal patrons. Biga is now boarding flights to destinations around the globe with its Traveling Taste Buds series. Biga has become a local incubator for up-and-coming chefs, and each month, the culinary minds behind the menu deliver themed offerings featuring a new country -- no passport required. This month will feature “healthy” Italian food in celebration of the Epiphany. Buon appetito! thesanantonioriverwalk.com

on Day two. . .
Rather than resolutions, why not create a bucket list this year? Meditate at the base of a six-and-a-half-ton Taihu limestone rock from Shanghai at the art museum. Discover a little village of artisans. Get a taste of something new as you walk, ride, and float through River City. Seize the opportunity to experience the kaleidoscope of activities that make San Antonio one of the country’s top destinations. We’ve even got a few suggestions to get you started. DAY TWO – BUYING POWER ONE-STOP-SHOP If you’re in the mood to park once and shop for hours, you can easily spend the day wearing out a credit card stripe at the Shops at Rivercenter. Grab a gooey chocolate chip cookie from Great American Cookies because I’m certain they pump that scent through the vents. Then check out the post-holiday deals at places like H&M and Francesca’s. You can even grab an iconic Don’t Mess with Texas tee and other essential SA swag at the RiverCenter Drug Store. Pro tip: Before you head out for a stroll along the river, get some bubbly to-go in a plastic champagne glass. LITTLE VILLAGE For a uniquely San Antonio shopping experience, walk five minutes over to La Villita just off the River Walk above the Arneson River Theatre. Run your fingers along an embroidered Mexican dress or cuff bracelet at Bird and Pear, or take a whiff of what luxury smells like at Capistrano Soap Company. This little village is home to shopping, art, and dining. And each of the 25-plus shops is housed in adobe structures and early Victorian and Texas limestone buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. COWBOY UP It’s not a trip to Texas without an authentic cowboy hat and boots. Skip the cheesy gift shop knockoffs and giddyup for the real deal at Paris Hatters. Since 1917 these mad hatters have fitted custom cowboy hats in true Texas fashion. They’ve even been named the number one Stetson retailer in the world. Take a peek at the wall of fame featuring pics of their famous customers like Dwight Yoakum, Sammy Davis Jr., and The Pope. Paris Hatters

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was the first-named site in Texas and features the four southernmost Spanish colonial missions -Concepción, San José, San Juan, and Espada. It is the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions on this continent, and it is a vital part of
the city’s heritage. Explore solo or try a guided tour to learn more about these sacred sisters.
