I AM SO HAPPY YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO BEGIN THE NEW YEAR IN SAN ANTONIO! If this is your first time visiting The Alamo City, there are many must-sees to tick off your bucket list, beginning with The Alamo itself. Culinaria’s Restaurant Weeks

A FEAST FOR THE AGES By Kimberly A. Suta

When the nonprofit, Culinaria, first began, the intention was to create a festive way to bring visitors into our city and showcase local chefs and the amazing culinary talent we have here. They launched Restaurant Weeks in 2010 and it is safe to say that not only is this a great draw for tourists but locals love it just as much. Restaurant Weeks is an exceptional opportunity for diners to sample restaurants they have not visited, particularly fine dining restaurants that might not typically fit into their budget.

HOW IT WORKS Restaurant Weeks is now a bi-annual event (January/ August) that several notable San Antonio restaurants participate in every year. The next event is Jan. 15-29. Culinaria invites you to “dine out and dig in” to these prix fixe threecourse lunch and dinner menus. The set price varies depending upon the style of restaurant, which ranges from casual to fine dining, however, lunch starts at $20 and dinner starts at $35.

“The restaurants decide what they want to do, but we will guide them, if need be,” explained Ginger Robinson, V.P. of Culinaria. “It is fun to watch the creative process. Sometimes restaurants pick customer favorites and then others take the opportunity to launch a new seasonal menu.”

Since the pandemic, to-go’s are all the rage and that includes Restaurant Weeks. Make sure to check out the website to see the full list of restaurants (including menus) and choose your passion—and keep reading for some of my personal favorites! BIGA ON THE BANK Biga on the Banks is one of the most tried-and-true fine dining restaurants along the River Walk and one of my favorites for a sumptuous meal in a refined setting. For Restaurant Weeks, Biga will be offering a threecourse dinner for $45. Last year’s menu included a variety of options for each course. 12 RIO Magazine

The Tomato Curry Soup with yogurt and mustard seed spinach (1st course), Mustard Crusted Roasted Australian Lamb Rack with Texas cheese grits (2nd course) and their renowned Sticky Toffee Pudding with English custard (3rd course) spoke to me, but truly you cannot choose poorly here. Everything is a superb masterpiece from seasoned chef, Bruce Auden. As an added bonus, they also give you the option to add a wine pairing with each course. BOTIKA Some restaurants located at the Historic Pearl are participating, but you are guaranteed a delicious meal at Botika, one of the top places I like to grab a bite to eat after shopping the Farmers Market on lazy Sunday afternoons. My go-to is always the pork and cabbage dumplings in a black tea sake broth that is so divine I usually require two orders. Botika, led by Chef Geronimo Lopez, is a unique blend of Asian and Peruvian influences. During Restaurant Weeks, you can enjoy a $20 lunch or $45 dinner. Although the menu may vary, last year they offered a daily bento box and house sorbets for lunch and Gyoza, Chicken Chaufa (an aromatic Teriyaki “Brasa” Chicken with fried rice, seasonal wok veggies and corn chalaca) and house sorbets for dinner. SUPPER Supper, located inside Hotel Emma at Pearl, is a jewel unto itself with an elegant dining room that features a countertop table with a view into the kitchen. Chef John Brand makes a concerted effort to source locally, including from Pearl’s Farmers Market vendors. For the previous Restaurant Weeks, Supper featured a $55 prix fixe menu that included Crispy Cauliflower and Sprouts with Caramel Popcorn, Chili Garlic Honey and Muzquiz Peanuts as a starter choice, Country Fried and thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Azuca Nuevo Latino, located along South Alamo, has been a hot spot going on two decades for their Latin-inspired cuisine from Chef Rene Fernandez. It is also a popular night spot for their happy hour mojitos and caipirinhas and on the weekends for Latin dancing.

Last year, Azuca had mouths watering for their $35 dinner that featured three different appetizer and entrée choices, including Sopa de Tortilla or Cuban Nachos made with plantain tostones to start and an Argentinean Mix Grill of beef churrasco, chicken breast and jalapeno sausage, gaucho, chimichurri, grilled veggies and mashers as an entrée option. They rounded out dessert with a Coco Flan made with fresh coconut caramel custard and a pina colada sauce. LA FRITE BELGIAN BISTRO Across the street, you will find La Frite Belgian Bistro, another cozy restaurant that locals and visitors adore. Sitting at one of the patio tables feels like you have been whisked away on a mini-European vacay. They are known for their exceptional mussels, so as you might imagine, they are usually on their Restaurant Weeks’ menu. Last August, they offered both lunch and dinner. Lunch included their Mussels Mariners Provençale, Pork Parmesan Coq au vin and Chocolate Mousse. I would say to make sure to save room for dessert, but you know it is coming!

MAVERICK TEXAS BRASSERIE Finally, just around the corner, Maverick Texas Brasserie is one of the newest restaurants to grace Southtown and offers thoughtfully curated menus of scratch-made French-inspired cuisine influenced by Texas flavors and ingredients. They are reliably delicious with excellent service for dinner, brunch, curbside and delivery. They recently launched a new happy hour, which takes place every day from 4:00 to 6:00pm with discounted beer, wine, spirits and a few nibbles. For Restaurant Weeks last year, they wowed the crowd with a $35 dinner menu that included Gazpacho or a Mixed Green Salad for appetizers, Seared Lake Trout, Crispy Pork Belly or Duck Confit Leg for the main option (now, that is a tough choice!) and Cheesecake with hazelnut streusel and strawberry coulis or Chocolate Marquis with Chantilly cream for dessert. Make a list and check it twice, because Restaurant Weeks is back, baby!

AMERCIAN FOOTBALL AT ITS FINEST Finally, another fun event to look forward to will take place this month on Saturday, Jan. 8, and that is the annual U.S. Army AllAmerican Bowl, which once again will be held at the Alamodome. This annual high school football game is played between all-star teams representing the eastern and western United States. Except for last year during the pandemic, the All-American Bowl has been held in San Antonio each year since 2002. In fact, 17 Heisman finalists have played in the All-American Bowl, including former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and former Alabama running back Derrick Henry. As of 2012, more than 175 Army All-Americans have gone on to play for the NFL. The game brings 90 of the nation’s top high school football players. In addition to the Bowl game, your family will enjoy the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band, featuring 125 of the nation’s top high school marching musicians who perform during halftime.

are perfect pairings but there is no doubt one pairing is the most perfect: dinner and a show. This month, we are going to offer some suggestions on a few places in town where you might go for a nice dinner and a show. And maybe even find yourself getting into the act!

DINNER OUTSIDE THE BOX Remember when your parents told you not to play with your food? Well, now you can enjoy a play… with your food whenever you make a reservation at some of the local restaurants to watch members of the Company Theatre get up to all sorts of wacky hijinks while you dine and take in the show. This zany troupe, founded by veteran actor Damien Gillen, has been traveling the countryside for more than 25 years—10 of which have been in collaboration with Little Italy restaurant as part of the Dinnerbox Series—that presents live comedic plays at local restaurants. This month, the Company Theatre will present an encore performance of the hit one-man show, An Evening with Mark Twain. Known as America’s most celebrated humorist and greatest authors, Gillen brings the titular character of Twain to life in a show that is only one of many that have been done at Little Italy and The Lion & Rose restaurants over the years. “We just thought it would be a perfect pairing. What if I brought my touring show into a restaurant?” Gillen said of the initial idea to take the show from the stage to the dining room. “It is a small, intimate space and we tried it out and it just exploded. People just come back again and again.” The shows the Company Theatre presents, most of which are family-friendly, tend to sell out fast due to word of mouth. The troupe has a mailing list of more than 2,000 people and rarely advertises, making it, in Gillen’s words, “the best kept secret in San Antonio.”

Dinner/show combos are $40 at the door or can be ordered online. All proceeds go to the repair and restoration of The Humbus, the troupe’s 1971 Volkswagen Campmobile that needs $1,000 worth of repairs. This past year, the troupe presented several plays, including their annual Halloween production, The Mystery of Irma Vep; The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), with all 37 plays done by three actors in 87 minutes; and two Christmas shows, Bah Humbug! - A One-Man Christmas Carol in which Gillen, who adapted the play

from the Dickens novel, portrays all of the characters; and Merry Christmas, George Bailey! a version of It’s a Wonderful Life that pays homage to the classic days of radio.

In the meantime, Gillen is always on the lookout for other restaurants that would like to participate in giving patrons the chance to have a play… with their food.

Upcoming shows at Little Italy and The Lion & Rose include another original one-man production with Gillen called The History of Texas… in One Darn Easy Lesson!, a hysterical, historical, hyperactive hayride through 500 years of Texas in 5,000 seconds, now in its seventh year of touring Texas. The troupe will also have its annual “FUNdraiser” show that has yet to be announced.

“This is the love of my life, and we are making [audiences] laugh,” Gillen said. “Ninetyfive percent of our shows are comedies and we want to make people happy, and that is why they come back.”

THE DINNER DETECTIVE If you have ever fancied yourself an amateur sleuth, be sure to check out America’s largest interactive comedy murder mystery show right here in San Antonio. This show gives audiences the opportunity to put on their figurative trench coats and fedoras and solve a hilarious mystery while feasting on a fantastic meal. But do not get full too fast. You will need your wits about you to nab the murderer who is somewhere in the room seated amongst the dinner guests. Who knows? You might even be the prime suspect. Located in the Sheraton Gunter Hotel on East Houston Street, the performance is not for children. It contains some mild adult humor and does not offer up your typical dinner theatre who-dun-it, as the actors are not dressed in costume but are hidden in plain sight in the audience. Not so elementary, dear Watson! In addition to the entertainment and full-course meal that includes an appetizer, main dish and dessert, the price of admission also includes waitstaff gratuity, a prize package for Top Sleuth and a cash bar. DREAMWEEK HIGHLIGHTS

DreamVoice Kick-Off Breakfast DreamWeek is not a week. This year, the 10th anniversary, it extends over 18 days, from Jan. 13-30, encompassing more than 200 multi-cultural events and activities that bring people from all walks of life together to learn their similarities and discuss their differences in peace. More than 150 different community organizations are involved. All of the events are open to everyone, and most of them are free of charge. It all started with an immigrant with big dreams. Shokare Nakpodia came to the U.S. from Nigeria in the 1990s. From New York he moved to San Antonio, where he founded a successful marketing and design firm. When a mayor appointed him to a volunteer commission on diversity, he became fascinated with the fact that San Antonio, where less than 10 percent of the population is Black, has one of the biggest annual Martin Luther King marches in the country. He started to imagine a way to bring people together to communicate across cultural divides about the issues King cared about— tolerance, justice and equality for all, and DreamWeek was born. Today DreamVoice LLC, which Nakpodia founded, manages the ambitious annual program. This year’s theme is “The Future.” From the DreamHour Speaker Series and provocative DreamPanel discussions to a fancy Mayor’s Ball, concerts, ethnic markets, fashion shows and sports—even a “Million Push-Up Challenge,” this year’s events range wide. But the heart of DreamWeek is the focus on inspiring dialogue, promoting new ideas and bringing people together in peace. “The underlying question for the future is: ‘Can we learn to get along?’” Nakpodia said. “We have to come together regardless of gender or religion or politics, and work towards this common goal that has been a beacon to the rest of the world. The world needs to see what it is like when people of different backgrounds live together. We are better together. And if you break bread with someone, or share the same dish, it is much harder to hate.”

DreamWeek’s schedule includes much breaking of bread together. The festivities open with a kick-off breakfast at the Briscoe Museum of Western Art, a historic, magnificently re-purposed library in the heart of the River Walk, where the Old West and New West come to life. A different kind of sharing will be spotlighted at “1000 Plates for the Hungry,” where church congregants and volunteers from all over will distribute food to some of San Antonio’s poorest residents. People in hijabs and yarmulkes, saris and New York runway styles and Indonesian batik sit side-by-side at lunches or panels in venues all over town, from historic neighborhoods to sleek modern buildings. College students in sweatshirts and businessmen in handsome suits share space and ideas. Recent immigrants and seventh-generation Americans share ideas and stories. If America is a melting pot, DreamWeek stirs the ingredients together. “Ten years ago we talked about diversity and civil civic engagement,” Nakpodia said. “Many thought it was idealistic. Now I think many people realize how important that is. We propose in the next 10 years to learn to map and strategize collectively for the future. This year we will focus on conflict resolution. We will allow people to adventure and mix a little more, in environments they have never been to through fear or insecurity or lack of education. A Jewish religious celebration, a Scottish dance, a Nigerian restaurant…during DreamWeek these places are safe to try. Armed with this information, visitors can choose to begin the day at The Alamo and then venture to other world-famous attractions like Tower of the Americas, La Villita and Market Square. Or explore historic neighborhoods surrounding downtown, such as Southtown, King William and Pearl with their flourishing culinary scenes. Perhaps family-friendly attractions are on the agenda. The possibilities are limitless, and with buses conveniently picking up at each stop every 20 minutes, between 8:40am and 5:30pm, it’s easy for visitors to set their own timelines.

It Takes A Village You need only hike the steps of the historic amphitheater on the River Walk to reach the little village at La Villita. It is part artsy village, part historic site.
