I THOUGHT SUMMER WOULD NEVER ARRIVE! I love summers in San Antonio - the town and people hum with excitement. Folks are out enjoying the recreational and cultural activities and the restaurants. San Antonio has long been the taco capital of the U.S. and, as of last month, San Antonio is #3 in the U.S. for BBQ. Coincidentally, we are featuring a few of our favorite BBQ spots in this month’s Sip & Savor story. Check out the Family Fun story for where to eat on Father’s Day. From crazy to sophisticated, we can help you match the place to Pop’s personality. He shouldn’t have to grill on his special day.

I’m super excited to announce downtown just got fishy! As of late last month, Sea Life San Antonio Aquarium opened inside the Shops at Rivercenter on the River Walk. I can’t wait to experience the underwater tunnel and interactive touch pools. As a kid, I wanted to be an oceanographer and am still fascinated by marine life. Read the Sea Life story in this month’s issue of RIO.

Texans did invent BBQ
but we perfected it!
v
Although cooking meat over fire has been around since the dawn of humankind, barbecue as we know it, originated in the Caribbean, and the word itself first appeared in 1526 in a Spanish explorer’s account of the West Indies. Since then, barbecue has exploded the world over.
If you’re on the search for outrageously delicious, mouthwatering, finger-lickin’-good BBQ, then you’ve come to the right city! San Antonio is home to more amazing barbecue joints than you can shake a rib at. Barbecue has become so popular in Texas, we now call it Texas BBQ. Some will taste joyfully familiar, others will surprise you with unexpected flavors and fusions. The journey to find your favorite BBQ joint is an adventure for your tastebuds and the reward is without parallel. AUGIE’S ALAMO CITY BBQ STEAKHOUSE Augie’s Alamo City BBQ Steakhouse is also firing up Texas BBQ so yummy it explains why Texans don’t mind waiting hours in line for some exceptional ‘cue. Located on Broadway, just south of the historic Pearl, Augie’s is the newest restaurant from one of SA’s most renowned pitmasters, Augie Cortez Jr. Everything’s done “old-school’ here. Augie calls it San Antonio-style as it’s reminiscent of a Sunday afternoon in your tio’s backyard. Just grab some BBQ off the pit, grab some sides and a beer and find a picnic table on the patio and dig in.

The beef ribs are out-of-this-world, with tender, juicy meat that falls off the bone right into your mouth. His signature dry rub goes on everything, including the sumptuous brisket which is smoked, fat side up, and served with or without that extra layer of melt-in-your-mouth goodness.

THE COUNTY LINE The County Line, located along the River Walk on West Crocket Street boasts legendary slowsmoked barbecue, a funky environment, and an open-air bar. They’ve been doing it right since 1975 and delicious consistency is what you can expect of all of their meats, ranging from smoked chicken to peppered turkey breast and beef brisket, along with a slew of housemade sides and their signature homemade bread with honey butter, so dense it’s like eating a slice of cake. My favorite—their St. Louis pork ribs—are slow-smoked for approximately 16 hours and then glazed with a sticky-sweet orange glaze. They say their barbecue is so good you’ve got to get it all over you because that’s how you know you’re eating good barbecue! They’ll be kicking off summer with seasonal cocktails and, as always, your meal is served on fine china – no butcher paper here.
giving WWII and Korean War vets a free meal at Rudy’s any day of the year and a discount to all military, past and present. BANDIT BBQ For something a little different, Bandit BBQ is impressing palates with their housemade sausages with flavors like smoked pork sausage stuffed with jalapeños, bacon, and mac-n-cheese. Located just a few minutes from downtown along S. Flores Street, this trendy-looking BBQ joint, which shares a space with a local coffee shop, has grown leaps and bounds through word of mouth. Not to be underestimated is their Smoked Turkey Sandwich with avocado and spicy mayo on a lightly toasted brioche bun. As someone whose eaten her weight in turkey sandwiches over the years (and then some), I don’t mean it lightly when I say this is possibly the best turkey sandwich I have ever eaten.
RUDY’S COUNTRY STORE AND B-B-Q Rudy’s Country Store and B-B-Q, with multiple locations in town, has a deep history of making Texas BBQ that families have loved for generations, since 1989. The original owner, Doc Holiday Jr., who has since passed, would say his favorite thing was to see people take that first bite of his barbecue and watch them smile and their eyes roll back in their head from pure satisfaction.
CURRY BOYS BBQ If you’re searching for even more creative barbecue, look no further than Curry Boys BBQ, located on N. St. Mary’s across the street from one of our most interesting wine bars, Little Death. This may be the only place in town where Southeast Asian Curry befriends Texas BBQ, resulting in some awe-inspired tastebuds.
Not only do they make incredibly moist brisket and chicken cooked over Texas oak for a mellow smoke flavor enhanced with their signature blend of spices but their rich creamed corn has a legion of fanatically loyal followers. Rudy’s tugs at our heartstrings by

TWO BROS BBQ MARKET Of course, those that know of San Antonio’s celebrity chef, Jason Dady, must head straight to Two Bros BBQ Market, because if you know anything about Chef Dady, it’s that this man knows good meat. For over 10 years, brothers Jason and Jake Dady have been slow smoking pit barbecue and serving it market-style with signature items including cherry glazed baby back ribs, BBQ beans with peaches,
and a creamy banana pudding served with freshly sliced bananas. According to Chef Dady, “It’s exciting to see the next generation of pit masters bring new ideas and, at the same time, respect the long-standing tradition of Texas BBQ. Our BBQ scene is as good as anywhere in the country right now, and we are a proud member of the SA BBQ family.” WRITER’S BIO Kimberly A. FAMILY FUN
So long ugly ties and soap on a rope (Dad’s going to be so glad)
By Janis Turk
Sunday, June 20th, is Father’s Day. Put it on your calendar. Make a note on your phone. This year you’re finally gonna do right by Dad and make him proud. It’s not going to be like years past. No more boring ties. No more cards with antlers on them. No more crummy gifts! Dad loves you too much to admit he never watched that Caddyshack DVD. Secretly, he hated the pizza-themed tie, the #1 Dad T-shirt, and the ashtray you made in 3rd grade. Seriously, he doesn’t even smoke. And no, he doesn’t want a selfie stick, crank-up radio, or fancy flashlight. He has one on his smartphone. Make this the year your taste in Father’s Day gifts grows up, just like you did.
STUDY THIS PLAYBOOK In case you never got your hands on the official Father’s Day playbook, here are some winning plays to study to ensure a big win.
DO think about what Dad really likes. Is he into Golf? Football? Boats? Gardening? Fishing? Cooking? Cars? Concentrate on his unique interests.
DON’T think that just because he likes fishing he wants some cheesy fisherman’s hat or a talking fish. If he has a hobby does he already have all he needs to enjoy it? So, yes, hone in on his interests, but carefully consider what he really wants. Forget useless gadgets in department store dad’s gift sections. Would you want that gift? DO ask for help. Head to a classy store like The Sporting District at
Pearl, a place with sophisticated fine-quality gifts and clothing, like leather laptop cases, beautiful bi-fold wallets, handsome luggage, bespoke barware, cool eyewear, good reads, and more. The staff has impeccable taste. Describe your dad’s style, and they’ll point you to the right gifts.
DON’T give Dad a gag gift. Nobody
16 RIO Magazine
wants a toilet-bowl coffee mug, a bobble-head ballplayer, or a Christmas Story leg lamp.
DO something with Dad. Does he like kayaking? Surprise him with a two-hour tandem kayak rental on a 3.25-mile route through downtown on the River Walk. Offered from 8 am -11:15 am only and limited to 50 people each day, make a reservation through Go Rio Cruises, the nice folks who run the river tours. Has he got a green thumb? Buy a tree and plant it together. Does Dad love golf? Hide his clubs in your car trunk and tee up together at Topgolf. An enormous golf and gaming complex, it features climate-controlled playing bays (think bowling lanes but for golf), an impressive array of refreshments in each bay, a full-service restaurant and bar, HDTVs, and a music selection. Make a reservation, and then settle into your bay (like a private box-seat suite at a sports arena). Staff will help set up your game and create profiles for each player. There are a dozen+ games from which to choose. Use complementary clubs, or bring your own, then aim at the giant outfield targets. Top-notch technology is built into balls that score themselves. Topgolf also offers high-tech arcade games even young kids can enjoy. DON’T forget: The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.
You don’t have to cook, you just have to know where to go for good food. Is your pop is a goofball who doesn’t like anything fussy—just beer, burgers, seafood, and barbecue? Does he guffaw at cornball gags? Can he laugh when the joke is on him? Then he’ll enjoy Dick’s Last Resort, San Antonio’s most irreverent, obnoxious, silly—but hilarious—bar and grill. Seriously, the staff is trained to be insulting, in a fun way. Known as a “Rowdy on the River” spot, Dick’s has been a River Walk mainstay since 1987. It’s got a great patio, or park it inside at a long table, and don’t be surprised if someone slaps a big ol’ bib on you or presents each of you with a stupid paper hat. Need napkins? Waiters will throw them at you. The concept was to offer guests a wacky bar and grill, and it worked; Originating in Dallas, it’s now a national chain. Dick’s is not for every dad—and not always an appropriate fit for youngsters—but if Pop is a wild and crazy guy, he’ll have a good time.

FAMILY FUN All photos on this page: Landrace
DO buy Dad a steak. If your father is more “Mad
Men” than a madman, and he enjoys a refined dining experience, take him to Landrace, the River Walk’s newest eatery. Standing across the river from the Tobin Center in the new Thompson Hotel, there the impressive, flaming, Argentinian-style, monster grill is sure to fire up the night. Chef Steven McHugh’s new place is part casual, part upscale, kinda hip midcentury in style and truly Texas Terroir—combining all that is handsome, Texan, and chill. Dad’s sure to like most anything on the menu (including chicken, seafood, and a few vegetarian options), but it’s the steaks that are spectacular. There’s also a full bar and “Old Fashioneds” (a rye-whiskey-driven cocktail) mixed tableside. Eat on the patio by the river, or reserve the private wine room. Treat him to a steak dinner at Landrace, and your father will know you’ve finally grown up. WRITERS BIO Janis Turk says she had the best dad ever, and she laments the fact that her earliest Father’s Day gifts included Old Spice, Soap on a Rope, and “I love you this much” figurines. Luckily, a shared love for poetry eventually brought years of finer presents, like good books and deep talks during long drives on roads less traveled. Learn more about Turk and her work at www. Fewer events, same great party atmosphere The enduring tradition of FIESTA in San Antonio is proof you can’t keep a great festival—or a great city—down. This year’s schedule of events, the majority of which were moved from April to this month, is smaller but the party atmosphere is as big as ever with a pared-down array of city-wide activities, music, food, and fun that’s sure to satisfy Fiesta lovers and get you out of the house and dancing in the streets. Here are some highlights:
RODEO DRIVEN Looking to go on a little day trip? Then be transported to A Day in Old Mexico and explore the distinctive culture, customs, and family traditions of Mexican horsemanship as a way of life. Sponsored by the Asociación de Charros de San Antonio, the oldest Charro association in the United States, this year’s family event is scheduled for June 20th and June 27th, and features gourmet food vendors, concessions, Ballet Folklorico, live mariachi music, and Charreada, Mexico’s official sport. Long described as “living history,” the charreada is a competitive sport pre-dating the American rodeo and borne from animal husbandry practices used on the haciendas of old Mexico. Watch and enjoy the pageantry of this centuries-old tradition! Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the gate on the day of the event.
HERZLICH WILLKOMMEN! Celebrate Fiesta German-style in an authentic, familyfriendly German beer garden hosted by the Beethoven Maennerchor (men’s choir), a group founded in 1867 dedicated to the preservation of German music, language, culture, and customs, and is the oldest active singing society in Texas. This year’s Gartenfest will take place June 23rd through June 25th and features German cuisine including 20 RIO Magazine
Bratwurst, Reuben sandwiches, Bavarian-style soft pretzels, and Leberkäse, as well as more than 20 German and American craft beers available on tap, and a dozen different wines. The 50-piece Beethoven Concert Band, the Beethoven Big Band, the Maennerchor men’s choir, and the Damenchor women’s choir also will be on hand to help frolickers kick up their heels through song and dance. So, raise a glass and shout “Ein Prosit!” And keep your eyes peeled for special appearances by Fiesta royalty, including King Antonio and El Rey Feo and their courts. thesanantonioriverwalk.com
NIOSA Come join the downtown fun of A Night In Old San Antonio®, one of Fiesta’s largest and most popular events, as it once again celebrates the city’s diverse cultural legacy over four festive nights. A long-standing tradition that began in 1938 as a one-night street fair, NIOSA has become a major annual attraction catering to more than 85,000 revelers annually. This year’s 72nd celebration, slated for June 22nd through June 25th, is sponsored by the Conservation Society of San Antonio and held in the downtown historic arts village of La Villita located on the banks of the San Antonio River.
Festivities will include food, drink, and atmosphere booths; live music; children’s games; decorations, and souvenirs. Food is created, perfected, and prepared by NIOSA volunteers in certified NIOSA kitchens. All of the booths also are run by Conservation Society volunteers, many of whom are second or third-generation volunteers. All proceeds from the event benefit the Conservation Society of San Antonio, one of the oldest and most active community preservation groups in the United States. Parking and ticket information is available on the NIOSA website.
TEXAS CAVALIERS RIVER PARADE This one-of-a-kind boat parade has been a crowd-pleaser for the thousands of onlookers who’ve gathered to watch alongside the banks of the River Walk since 1941, and this year is no different. Don’t miss the lights and decorations illuminating the river with the bold colors of Fiesta as floats decked in bright flowers and vibrant colors set sail from 7 pm-9 pm on June 21st, with the traditional investiture of the King of San Antonio slated for June 19th. Funds raised from the event support local children’s charities through the Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation. Ticket information is available on the event website.

MASK APPEAL When life hands you a mask, decorate it! That’s the premise behind the #ShowMeYourMask virtual competition hosted by District 4 Councilwoman Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia, the Fiesta Commission, MySA, and Palo Alto College, to allow the community a safe way to get creative and show their Fiesta spirit. On June 18th the top finalists in various age groups will participate in a Fiesta “Maskarade” Runway Show at the college with an announcement of the winners. The event is free and open to the public. Masks are mandatory and social distancing is recommended. The contest is a spin on the popular Fiesta phrase, “Show Me Your Shoes” often said during Fiesta parades. Entry themes include “Classic Fiesta, “Flores de Fiesta”, and “Fiesta Royale.” Descriptions for these categories and more information about online submissions can be found on MySA.com.
ANIMAL ATTRACTION Finish Fiesta 2021 strong with a visit to the San Antonio Zoo to explore the various species of Latin America during the zoo’s two-day Fiesta event, Festivale de Animales, June 26th and 27th, hosted by the San Antonio Zoological Society. Help celebrate the animals, culture, and food of Latin America as the zoo highlights creatures native to South and Central America, as well as its conservation efforts in these areas. Enjoy a culinary tour of Latin America at select zoo restaurants and pop-up booths. Admission information is available on the zoo’s website. GREAT FINDS
Kitschy and Kool Make it your
summer look
By Dawn Robinette
Feliz Modern

Summer is meant to be light-hearted and filled with laughter. What better way to kickstart summer fun than by adding a dash of kitsch to the season? A word, and style, that is far-ranging, “kitsch” is easier to define when you see it than by its definition. Some might say it’s tacky or over the top, but true kitsch is done with a wink, a nod, and always with a smile. It’s fashion-forward and showcases a bit of attitude. So go for a single piece or all in to keep a fun summer vibe on speed dial. Check out these great shopping spots, known for their kitschy offerings.
Karolina’s Antiques
Adelante Boutique
To land unique summer pieces, head to Karolina’s Antiques. Nestled in the Beacon Hill neighborhood, Karolina’s is a beacon to anyone with an eye for flair and color. Don’t be fooled by the antiques part of Karolina’s—while you’ll find them there, what will draw you in is the array of colorful contemporary finds. With a selection from local artists and makers, your finds will have both San Antonio roots and attitude, so you can sport your kitsch with San Antonio pride. For kitsch that screams summer fun, rock your love of all things guac with avocado-shaped purses and clutches, or sport beaded avocado earrings. Grab a pair of avocado and molcajete earrings to wear with the irresistible Loteria shoes that Karolina’s offers and you’re set for summer. If you’re a Frida Kahlo fan, don’t miss the hand-painted Frida straw hat. Know that if you see something at Karolina’s that you love, snag it quickly. Their finds are known to sell out, so shop often for the best selection and never hesitate-if you don’t grab it, someone else will. That golden rule of shopping also applies to Adelante Boutique. A San Antonio institution adding fashion and heirloom pieces to the wardrobes of Alamo City women for 46 years, Adelante is a colorful fixture at The Pearl not to miss. Its window displays draw you in to see its always ontrend finds and when it comes to kitsch, Adelante has the trend down pat. From the perfect Texas umbrella to shade you from the sun to clutches, totes, and dishes that show off the Lone Star state, you can’t go wrong. A favorite is the oversized Texas pillow perfect to give your living room a bit of Texas pride, too. Kick up the attitude when you do your dishes with any of Adelante’s hilarious kitchen towels, which also make the perfect kitschy gift. Beaded taco-shaped earrings belong poolside, or pair them with the Adelante’s selection of straw totes, beaded bracelets, and summer sandals for a pop of fun. The Sporting District

“Pop” is the word when you explore Adelante’s neighbor at The Pearl, Feliz Modern Pop. Bright, cheery, and cheeky, it’s impossible not to smile when you walk through the door. Color and whimsy wash over you as every inch of the store is filled with something that catches your eye. And for those eyes, don’t miss Feliz’s Polly Sunglasses, perfect for a 1960s road trip with the top down, or a day strolling the River Walk. Add a little sunshine to any room with a smiling, sun-shaped throw pillow, which pairs perfectly with the bright orange pop on a throw blanket great for at home or the beach. Take your tunes – and your drinks! – with you in the cutest cooler ever, a pink and orange Cooler Box Sounds that looks like a cheery robot. Pour a cold one into a sparkly, streamer tumbler and bring the fun with you as you roam. Think men can’t go for kitsch? Think again! For everything from casual to dress to the nines, The Sporting District is a store to experience. Also at The Pearl, the relaxed vibe inside matches the clothes, accessories, and lifestyle goods that fill the store. Kitsch paired with chic is the attitude you’ll find from the zebra rug, exposed brick wall, dark-grained wood floor, and the huge electric sign ordering you to “Enjoy the finer life”. From feathered bowties to everything you need to tame that trendy pandemic beard and ‘stache, The Sporting District has you covered. Don’t miss the barbeque and beer decorated ties and be sure to kick your belt game up a notch with one sporting some San Antonio flair. For water fun, grab a swimsuit covered in crabs, paired with Hari Mari flip flops for a timeless, yet trendy, summer look. For more masculine kitschy fashion, a spin through downtown’s icon Penner’s is in order. Standing proudly just steps from the River Walk, Penner’s has been dressing San Antonians for more than a century, with stylish hats, suits and it’s signature Stacy Penners shoes. A perfect nod to how kitsch is cool, Stacy Penners are an iconic staple to men in the know and pair well with linen pants for summer style. Top it off with a linen shirt featuring sunglasses, or a dress shirt sporting a pop of color, for summer fashion ready for a night of patio dining with friends or romantic strolls downtown. For water fun, wrestle up a kitschy look and go all-in with a lucha libre swimsuit, covered in smiling luchadores masks. Paired with one of Penner’s straw hats and you’ll be cool on even the hottest summer days. 26 RIO Magazine

All in the Family The River Walk’s Generational Restaurants By Susan Yerkes
History and family traditions run deep in San Antonio; and the River Walk is no exception where you’ll find three restaurants where generations of San Antonio families have maintained old-fashioned, personal traditions of hospitality. Bill Lyons and daughter Elizabeth Alfred Beyer
CASA RIO AND SCHILO’S The oldest restaurant on the River Walk, Casa Rio opened in 1946, and is still family-owned and operated. Today, Bill Lyons is the third generation. His grandfather, Alfred Beyer, had a downtown appliance business. But in 1921 a catastrophic flood wiped out Beyer’s inventory. Lyons recounts that Thomas Edison himself replaced all the Edison phonographs and records for free. When big-box stores edged out his business in the ‘40s, Beyer took a visionary leap. He excavated the basement of his building to create Casa Rio right on the River Walk. Success was a struggle. The early River Walk had such a questionable reputation it was off-limits to the military, so Beyer convinced base commanders to allow soldiers to walk directly down the Commerce Street Bridge stairs to Casa Rio without going further. The banks were bare, so Beyer landscaped both sides of the River Walk around him. He introduced paddle, canoes, and gondolas, and then tour and dinner boats – for decades the only boats on the river. The menu, inspired by typical food in Mexican cantinas, served classic Tex-Mex cuisine. It’s still Casa Rio’s popular staple.
1972, Lyons’ father took over Casa Rio. When he died in 1977, Bill stepped up. The family tradition includes loyal long-time employees, some for 20 to 60 years.
“When I was 6 or 7, our family went downtown every night for a week and tested the food. I got tired of it for a while,” Lyons said. But not today. In
In 1980, Lyons took over another iconic family business. Schilo’s, located just above Casa Rio on street level, was owned and operated by three

generations of the Schilo family since 1917. Schnitzels, sausage, German potato salad, split pea soup, and their famous root beer are still menu staples. At 82, Lyons still loves working on the River Walk. “It’s like magic when you walk down from the street, into a different world,” he said. “As the world gets faster and more urbanized, we need more of the river experience.” thesanantonioriverwalk.com
Rick, Will and William Grinnan
THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS RESTAURANT The historic building where River Walk visionary Robert Hugman worked is home to another San Antonio family’s generational restaurant. In 1975, Rick Grinnan was already a River Walk veteran when he opened The Republic of Texas Restaurant. He worked at the fabled Kangaroo Court in college and moved up to managing several popular River Walk restaurants before opening The Republic. The menu was pure San Antonio. “I drove all over the city checking out popular food places, for burgers, Tex-Mex, and barbecue. We made everything bigger, from a half-pound hamburger to a 42-ounce Margarita - because things in Texas are bigger,” he said. At night, the bar was the center of a hot disco scene. Over time the business, like the River Walk itself, became more and more family-oriented. Guests today enjoy sitting at the patio tables with their distinctive Texas flag umbrellas. The dining room walls are filled with artifacts from the days Texas was a Republic, and from the Republic of Irelan. Grinnan notes Texas’ independence struggle mirrored in the history of the Irish Republic. A few years ago, Grinnan’s son Will returned to San Antonio to join the business as partner and manager. Growing up with a River Walk restaurant was fun, Will said. “I started early, washing and bussing tables and hosting, and then I learned how to DJ at night,” he recalled. “I always wanted to be like my father. Love of the business must be in my blood. Culinary and mixology are always changing so we went from big plates to smaller plates, and smaller menus so we can focus and perfect our recipes. For us, the focus is on Tex-Mex, burgers, barbecue, and chicken fried steak. The bar has gotten eclectic. We specialize in Texas brews and Texas spirits.” An exclusive Republic of Texas tequila distilled in the Texas Hill Country now far outsells all other labels, he added. thesanantonioriverwalk.com
“I’m so happy I got to mentor Will – he makes his own decisions now,” Rick said proudly. “His son is named after me – William Frederick Grinnan IV. He is my heart.” And who knows -- someday he may continue the restaurant’s success. RIO Magazine

Larkin and Bob Buchanan
THE ORIGINAL MEXICAN RESTAURANT When Bob Buchanan, affectionately known as “Mr. B” around the River Walk, started his career as a River Walk restaurateur in the late 60’s he wasn’t thinking about generational succession. Today, at 79, he still spends much of his time at his place, The Original Mexican Restaurant, one of many he has been involved with over the years. Mr. B’s son Larkin, 39, remembers the River Walk shops and restaurants where he played as a child and worked in his teen years. He loved the fast-paced Original, and the more laid-back Kangaroo Court, now closed. The Kangaroo Court’s cheesecake was a blessing and a bane for Larkin. “It was famous. Everyone loved it. But as a kid, I wanted chocolate or vanilla sheet cake for my birthdays, and it turned into a running joke that – surprise – we always had birthday cheesecake instead.” That Kangaroo Court is long closed, but that cheesecake still delights diners at The Original. Larkin’s mother, the late Conservation Society leader Sally Buchanan, was an active partner in the business. “She was hands-on and meticulous with the design, while dad was always checking the quality of the food and service,” he recalled. After college, Larkin fulfilled his yen for travel, living, and teaching in Prague and Korea, where he met his wife. But the River Walk called him back, and today his daughter Lila and son Wyatt are growing up as he did, while he oversees the restaurant as the company’s vice president. It’s still very much a family enterprise.

“The kids love the River Walk and going on the boats. And my dad is in no way retired. Weekend nights he’s behind the bar washing glasses and I almost have to push him out when midnight comes around. I truly enjoy the business, the constant change, and challenge.,” Larkin said. “It’s a beautiful poetry of moving chaos, and it fits our lives well.” WRITER’S BIO Susan Yerkes is a San Antonio-based travel writer and journalist, who has enjoyed the River Walk’s restaurants for years.

Take A Walk through Internationally Recognized Local History By Drew Henry
Árbol de la Vida
THE SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS: A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE In 2015, the five San Antonio Missions joined the ranks of over one thousand other international treasures across 67 countries. Places like the Redwood National Parks, The Walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, and the Sistine Chapel when they were recognized by The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). San Antonio is home to the largest concentration of Spanish colonial missions in North America. Today, we’re going to take a walk-through time as we tour centuries-old structures that now stand next to modern art pieces showing the city’s bright future. Take us along as your guide as we share history, details, and tidbits on the trail! WALKING TOUR OF THE FIVE MISSIONS Four of San Antonio’s five missions are located along an eightmile stretch of the River Walk known as the Mission Reach. You can plan to walk, bike, bus, or drive. Of course, we recommend a walk or bike tour so you can experience all the beauty the 32 RIO Magazine

Mission San Jose
river has to offer. The missions are open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset, making self-guided tours a breeze. Also, ranger-led programs are hosted at the San José Visitor Center in the late morning and early afternoon, and all missions except for The Alamo hold regular church services. VISIT THE FOUR MISSION REACH PORTALS Except for The Alamo, each historic mission is connected to the River Walk trail via portals. These unique public art projects bridge the gap between San Antonio’s past and future; each represents a blend of the present with the past while embracing a vibrant art scene. Mission Reach also provides 16 miles of walking trails, paddling trails for kayaks, and other beautiful public art projects in addition to the portals.
Whispers
MISSION SAN JOSÉ AND WHISPERS Also known as the Queen of the Missions, Mission San José was established in 1720 and is the largest San Antonio mission. In 2011, a 2 million dollar renovation took place to refinish the original interior domes, walls, and altars. On your visit, make sure to note the Spanish Colonial design and the breathtaking “Rose Window.” Whispers, designed by Arne Quinze, is your portal to Mission San Juan. A series of organically shaped rigid metal pieces appear to catch the wind. The fluorescent colors represent local wildflowers. The four structures appear to “whisper” to each other through the breeze along the river. Stand quietly and see for yourself.
Mission Concepcion
MISSION CONCEPCIÓN AND RIVER RETURN Mission Concepción was dedicated in 1755, and since then, not much has changed. This is the oldest unrestored stone church in America. While the exterior has faded, there are still vibrant original frescos present in the interior. River Return, designed by Stacy Levy, is your portal to Mission Concepción. Located at the northernmost point of Mission Reach, it is likely the first portal you will see. It tells the unique story of the connections between the missions and the river. From a stone platform, you can take in views of both Mission Concepción and the river. MISSION SAN JUAN AND COCOJIBOS Mission San Juan was established in 1731 and primarily served as farmland for the region as well as a church for the local community. The bell tower and chapel continue to be used today. On your tour, pay attention to Romanesque detailing and take some time to explore the nature trail that leads to the river.
River Return
CoCojibos, designed by Mel Chin, serves as the portal to Mission San José. It is intended to bridge the history of the missions to the river’s natural world. The name translates to “co-shelters” and features both planting beds for cacti above and shade for visitors below. thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Mission San Antonio De Valero
MISSION ESPADA AND ÁRBOL DE LA VIDA: MEMORIAS Y VOCES DE LA TIERRA Mission Espada was dedicated in 1731 and continues to use part of the original irrigation canal system called an acequia to operate an aqueduct and dam. In fact, this mission boasts one of the best-preserved irrigation systems from the time. Despite a fire in 1826 that destroyed most of the structures, the original chapel, granary, and two compound walls remain. Árbol de la Vida, designed by Margarita Cabrera, is one of the most famous portals on the Mission reach and your connection to Mission Espada. This unique tree-like structure is a collaborative art piece celebrating San Antonio’s culture and the different backgrounds that make up our community. Each piece hanging from the tree was made by a local from countless walks of life.
San Antonio Culture through Music and Dance Enjoy San Antonio’s culture and tradition through music and dance at a performance of the 64th annual Fiesta Noche del Rio located at the outdoor River Walk ampitheatercalled the Arneson River Theatre. The professionally choreographed performance showcases talented local dancers, singers, and musicians with colorful costumes and a bit of humor. This is a must-see! The season begins June 11th and runs through August 7th every Friday and Saturday night (except June 25 and 26), starting at 8:30 PM.
MISSION SAN ANTONIO DE VALERO Mission San Antonio de Valera, better known as The Alamo, was founded in 1718 and has become one of America’s most famous missions. In 1836, decades after the original mission closed, the structure became a symbol of inspiration during the Texas Revolution. Unlike the other missions located on the Southside, The Alamo is in the heart of downtown San Antonio. It is the perfect place to start or finish your mission tour.

KIDS DAY
Want to play pretend? Let’s pretend this is a list of things for kids to do, but no one is checking IDs. Whether you’re young at heart, or you’ve got actual children in tow, we’ve planned a whimsical day in SA. HOPSCOTCH You can throw rocks into chalk squares, or you can dive into an immersive art experience in the Travis Park Plaza building. Hopscotch is a permanent art installation in San Antonio that rotates art exhibitions from local and international artists. But it’s so much more than strolling past portraits in a gallery. This is like stepping out of reality and stepping into a painting. The colors, lighting, and grand scale of these works will make it virtually impossible not to post on Instagram. So hop on over. #LetsHopScotch
TIME FOR TENDIES For lunch, we’re headed to Southtown for some burgers and chicken tendies. But buckle up. This ain’t your average fast-food dive. Burgerteca is a San Antonio staple serving up serious sandwiches and a kids menu with chicken fingers, hot dogs, and quesadillas. Try the Oaxaca (wa-ha-kah) Burger with mole negro, black beans, and queso fresco. They also have daily specials and a killer $5 happy hour. For ten bucks you can walk out of there with a Big Tex Burger and a prickly pear margarita.
BIG KID If you’ve got older kids, go for a high-brow museum day at The Witte Museum. You’ve got the skeleton of meat-eating dinosaurs, an interactive body exhibit, and plenty of great Texas history treasures.

LITTLE KID If you have tinier tots, set yourself up at The DoSeum or LEGOLAND Discovery Center. The new traveling exhibition arrived last month at The DoSeum, and kids are invited to go on a Voyage to the Deep. This 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea-themed exhibit lets kids climb aboard the giant Nautilus for an immersive submarine experience. Or at LEGOLAND you can build and race cars on two timed tracks, meet your favorite LEGO characters, or take a workshop to become a LEGO master builder. Both offer interactive memories, so take your pick, or pick them both!
Hey, June bugs! It’s time to usher in summer with burgers, bones, and beer. This month we’re adventuring out with art and museums for the kids, drinks and bonding time with Dad, and a little playtime and party vibes for our grads.

BREWS AND WOO HOOS If you’re celebrating college graduation, then you’re old enough to do a mini pub crawl between two breezy River Walk hot spots. Start at Bier Garten for an authentic German pretzel and a frothy stein of Hofbrau Dunkel. Once you say “Prost!” and chug your brew, head back toward the river to Mad Dogs British Pub. Kilts are optional, but a good time is not. This place was voted the best entertainment on the River Walk, and the live music is top-notch. Choose a lager or cider drink, and soak it up with munchies. If you’re a straight-A student get the creamy artichoke and spinach dip. If you got straight Cs and an F, go for the chili cheese fries.
