May is a wonderful time of the year, the summer heat kisses your shoulders and the colors are bright and cheery. May is full of last days of school, graduations for high school and college students, and new beginnings for everyone! If it is business or leisure that brought you to San Antonio, make sure to take in San Antonio and the surrounding area. Start at the River Walk and grab a cocktail to whet your thirst. The River Walk is home to many restaurants and bars that are both unique in ambiance as well as cocktails. All of these restaurants offer delicious and refreshing (non-alcoholic) drinks such as Rio Rio’s Aguas Frescas. This delicious concoction of fresh waters is made with fresh ingredients from cucumber to jicama and watermelon. Aguas Frescas are refreshing and crisp and the perfect drink on a hot day. While walking around the River Walk, you are sure to see men and women of the United States Armed Forces. San Antonio is known as Military City, U.S.A. and is home to Lackland Air Force Base, Fort Sam Houston, Randolph Air Force Base and more. Many of these servicemen and women you will see downtown may have just graduated and possibly spending the day with their family. Offer to take a family photo for them and thank them for their service, where would we be without our service men and women! All the more reason...May is National Military Appreciation month! San Antonio honors our service members by participating in the Armed Forces Military Parade, primarily sponsored by Bud light and produced by the Paseo del Rio Association. This must-see parade takes place on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 17, 2014. Take in the sights as 25 professionally decorated floats travel down the River Walk, receiving cheers and support all along the way. These floats are themed according to their participants, e.g. all branches of service, veterans of recent conflicts, military support groups, etc. The floats will feature live entertainment from military groups, as well as local artists who wish to dedicate their talents to honor the troops. The parade will also feature “Tops In Blue”, the all-active duty US Air Force entertainment group. After the parade, there will be plenty to do! Check out downtown in some of the many FUN and exciting opportunities that are available! In our downtown, you really should take a tour, whether by bike, Segway or bus. Feeling more adventurous, River City Run organizes a 5K through downtown, taking in the sights at several stopping points on the way. Whatever your choice, go venture out and explore our amazing city!

ese hot, th g n ri u d g in h es fr re re o What could be m a cool and sparkling cocktail summer days thanio River Walk? on the San Anton Take a stroll on the river and explore some of San Antonio’s friendly and happening cocktail spots where you can enjoy the city’s renowned Margaritas, crisp, thirstquenching beers and fruity Aguas Frescas (fresh waters) created by some of San Antonio’s top bartenders and mixologists with summer and sun in mind! Start your day off at Rio Rio Cantina’s featured bar, The Naked Iguana Lounge, where a new line of sixteen drinks, five shots and six Aguas Frescas have been created by mixologist Derik Cortez in a creative attempt to stand out from the river bar scene in producing hand-crafted cocktails using the freshest and most natural ingredients available on the day. The newly-developed Aguas Frescas are available year-round and make use of seasonal fruits. Cortez says, “I wanted to do something totally different on the Riverwalk with an organic feel to already known cocktail flavorings”. Available flavors to sip on their own or mixed with a liquor of 12 RIO Magazine

your choice are cucumber, jicama and mint, mango, pineapple, strawberry-watermelon, hibiscus blood-orange and citrus and orchata. A full bar and other specialty drinks are also available. Continue your stroll onwards to Rita’s on the River, known for some of the best Texas-sized margaritas and Tex-Mex food on the river. Blue Agave tequila and TripleSec liqueur form the base of their delicious margarita’s affectionately listed as Bueno (good), Mas Bueno (very good) and Mas Mas Bueno (very, very good). They can be personalized adding your choice of tequila, additional liqueurs, available in various sizes and also additional non-alcoholic flavorings to make this drink your special concoction. Enjoy live Mariachi music daily while trying a popular favorite known as the Dos-a Rita, their classic Rio Margarita topped with an upside-down bottle of beer giving this cocktail some added pizzazz in both flavor and style.

Next on your stop and slightly off the beaten path, head to Acenar to a trendy, scenic spot to be enjoyed indoors or outside on the patio while sipping sophisticated cocktails and eating contemporary Mexican food. This sleek, modern environment features cutting-edge design and bold colors making the atmosphere feel hip, yet relaxed. Cool down on the patio while sipping their special Coconut Margarita made with fresh pineapple juice, silver tequila and coconut milk served frozen. Take in their happy hour available at the Atomar Bar from SunThur, 3-6pm where you can enjoy some of their food and drink specials at a great price of $5. Had enough margarita’s to last a lifetime and could use one more for the road or rather, river? Head to your last point of call to the newlydesigned and opened BierGarten where Hofbrau German beer along with your usual beer favorites can be enjoyed all day and evening long. Twenty beers are available www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Run, Bike, Bus or Ride. Ways to tour downtown San Antonio By Margaux Gonzalez Huckabay

Whether you are traveling to San Antonio for the first time or the third time, or even for you locals, make time for downtown San Antonio. Downtown San Antonio is unique and fun. When it comes down to touring, I suggest you take part in one of the many unconventional methods of “transportation” you will find downtown. Sure you can get around by walking or via your car, but these fun and different ways of gettin’ around will help fill up the San Antonio section of your catalogue of memories. Several of these also present a great chance to burn a few calories along the way! Want to be healthy, burn a few calories and check out downtown on foot, River City Run is just for you! River City Run is a 5k running tour through the heart of San Antonio. There are 15 stops along the way where guides take the opportunity to share interesting and historical facts about the downtown area with their runners. The run is group-oriented, and runners of all abilities are encouraged to participate. The cost of the tour is $30 per person, which includes a dry fit t-shirt, water, and access to photos taken throughout the tour. Scheduled group tours take place every Saturday and Sunday morning, and private runs are available seven days a week. The tour starts and finishes in front of The Alamo. Registration is preferred prior to participation and available online at www.rivercityrunsa.com. Don’t hesitate to call them at 210.201.3786 or email them at rivercityrunsa@gmail.com for any questions, to request group pricing or to schedule a private tour. Stops include The Alamo, The Menger Hotel, Torch of Friendship, Hemisfair Park, The Tower of the America’s, La Villita, The Arneson River Theatre, The San Antonio River Walk, the Bexar County Courthouse, Market Square, Spanish Governor’s Palace, San Fernando Cathedral, The Southwest School of Art, Majestic Theatre, Buckhorn Saloon and Museum, and The Emily Morgan www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Hotel. River City run boasts great reviews on TripAdvisor, such as a “Fantastic experience”, “the best thing we did all weekend” and “Fun and Informative”. Maybe a tour by foot is not what you are interested in, but you still want something exciting! Then what about touring by Segway? A Segway, is a two-wheeled, self-balancing, battery-powered electric vehicle. The Segway

tours start and end at SegCity, located in the breezeway directly across from The Alamo at 124 Losoya Street. Segway tours give riders the thrill of riding and being able to be up close and personal with all the sights. Segway tours are great for anyone with walking issues or those that just want a more efficient way of getting around downtown. SegCity has multiple tours to pick from the popular Ultimate tour to really unconventional tours like the Ghost Tour and The Wild Bunch tour. Check out their website segcity.com/sanantonio or drop them a line at 210.224.0773 What about touring on your own? Maybe you are more hands on and want to explore on

your own. You could rent a car, but how about doing something a little different and better on the environment? Check out B-Cycle! San Antonio B-cycle charges a membership fee to gain unlimited access to the system for the duration of your chosen membership period in addition to a time-based usage fee that varies according to how long you keep the bike on each ride. To encourage usage and bike availability, the first 30 minutes of every ride is free! You can buy a membership that is good for 24 hours, 7 days, or one year. All memberships can be purchased at www.sanantonio.bcycle.com, and 24-hour memberships can also be purchased at the kiosk that is a part of every San Antonio B-station. Stations are located near almost all downtown landmarks. Find one at The Alamo, Pearl Brewery. Blue Star Art Complex, The Tower of the America’s, San Antonio Museum of Art, and The Witte and even down by the beautiful Mission Reach. What makes touring by Bike the right choice? Daniel Trevino, Operations Manager of B-cycle says “One can avoid congestion and parking problems, reduce pollution, plus it improves your health and will put a smile on your face.” That sounds pretty great to me! Maybe you are just not that active or prefer a bit more of a laid back experience? City Sightseeing tours gives you the opportunity to “take a downtown tour of San Antonio on a double deck London style bus”, says Karen Lindsey. The double decker bus allows you the opportunity to enjoy our local architecture, and a chance to take some photos from very unique vantage points. The tour includes some popular stops such as The Pearl Brewery and the San Antonio Museum of Art. Check out their website for more information citysightseeingtours.com/sanantonio. Plus the bus does have air conditioning inside. Touring on foot, Segway, bike or bus you are bound to have a unique, informative and FUN experience. RIO Magazine 27

“Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Old Oak Tree...” Kelly Hamilton

The 1970’s produced the iconic tune to the crooning of Tony Orlando. Recorded many times since then, the meaning remains the same; hold out hope for the one you love. Since then, the yellow ribbon has integrated itself in our lives as a symbol for remembrance, hope, faith and reverence – all synonymous with our military brothers and sisters. Well known to our beloved city of San Antonio is the concept of military ritual and its place in the community. Numerous organizations throughout the city offer ways to show respect for our soldiers here and abroad. One such organization is SEGUINthe Paseo del Rio where they offer citizens the opportunity to purchase a yellow ribbon in honor of all military members surviving and remembered. Such ribbons can be purchased from now through the military parade on May 17th. Through this initiative, friends, families, businesses and organizations in San Antonio and across the country, have the opportunity to sponsor large Yellow Ribbons that will festoon the trees along the River Walk in honor or memory of those who serve, or have served in the Armed Forces, from May 3 through the parade on Armed Forces Day Saturday, May 17. Professionally decorated floats will travel down the River Walk, themed according to their participants- all branches of service, veterans of recent conflicts, military support groups, etc. The floats will feature live entertainment from military groups, as well as local artists who wish to dedicate their talents to honor the troops. Innumerable military bases lie

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

within our great state’s boundary and with a number of those within the San Antonio area, we hail this city as the Military City of USA. Claiming such title requires appropriate pomp and circumstance, which is of course delivered through the cities numerous organizations who cater to public events and military recognition. San Antonio’s Fort Sam Houston was designated as a National Historical landmark in 1975 and as one of the Army’s oldest installations and now part of Joint Base San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston boasts the largest collection of historic structures -- more than 900 buildings. Even more consequential than the numbers is the historical integrity of the post’s different sections which represent different eras of construction. Careful preservation of these areas, along with two museums, allows the post to live with its history, surrounded by existence of the traditions of excellence established when the first soldier arrived here in 1845. The base houses its own Museum and a lovely outdoor Quadrangle where children and adults alike can roam freely among ducks and peacocks. Just on the other side of town visitors can peruse historical documents and photographs at the Gateway Historical Collection housed on Lackland Air Force Base. Whether visiting our proud city or long time resident, young and old alike can relish in the knowledge that San Antonio, Texas proudly wears its moniker of Military City, USA.
