MY FALL BUCKET LIST
BUSINESS MANAGER
The November issue of RIO Magazine contains three favorite topics on my perennial Fall bucket list.
Vicki Schroder Vicki@travelingblender.com
The first activity are long visits over a cup of hot tea. I get that from my ancient British auntie. This month’s Kids & Family story shares several delightful places around town to enjoy a cup in a beautiful setting. As the story suggests, I have fond memories of drinking tea and bonding with my now 96-year-old aunt.

As a season ticket-holder to the Majestic Theatre and avid theatre goer, I was fascinated reading notable snippets of three historic downtown venues in the Arts & Entertainment feature. Now that I know their past, I vow to appreciate them even more.
Gerry Lair gerry@travelingblender.com
I love the traditional food and fellowship associated with Thanksgiving. The Food & Drink feature story and photos about where to dine out on turkey day left my mouthwatering. So much so, that I am considering dining out on my favorite holiday, now that would be a first! Don’t read this story on an empty stomach. Warmly,

After all, why roast an entire prime rib, cook a whole turkey, cook and chill a seafood tower when you can enjoy the work of professionals for an afternoon? Besides, you don’t have to worry about cleaning up, either. That means you can spend your time watching football, playing games with the kids and grandkids and seeing who’s going to say something outrageous this year. So consider these options for your holiday dining celebrations followed by a stroll along the River Walk. GRANDE DAME OF BUFFETS The Omni La Mansión del Rio’s Las Canarias, already beloved for its overflowing Sunday brunches, will raise its bar a few notches even higher with its Thanksgiving brunch and dinner. The Thanksgiving brunch includes an omelet station; a build-your-own waffle station, a carving station with herb roasted turkey, prime rib, and maple glazed ham, cheese and charcuterie, eggs Benedict; a chilled seafood station, an array of soups, salads and vegetable; and desserts that include a bananas Foster station, along with pecan and pumpkin pies. The Thanksgiving dinner buffet includes chicken and waffles; made to order pasta; a carving station that includes prime rib, herbrubbed turkey and bourbon maple glazed ham; a bountiful cheese and charcuterie presentation; a chilled seafood station; made-to-order pasta; accompaniments that include butternut squash bisque, herb-grilled asparagus, citrus cranberry sauce and many more options; and desserts that include melons from the Rio Grande Valley, bananas Foster, and pecan and pumpkin pies. And since it’s never too early to start planning for Christmas, La Mansión will feature a Christmas Day brunch and dinner. Brunch thesanantonioriverwalk.com

The restaurant will be open for its normal hours on Christmas Eve, but closed for dinner on Christmas Day. On New Year’s Eve, Dorrego’s is doing it up with a special menu featuring a carving station that will offer a grilled malbec-soaked beef tritip, harissa-mint leg of lamb, bacon-wrapped pork loin, Argentine chorizo, achiote pineapple chicken, all with an array of vegetables and sauces; a chilled seafood station; a cheese station with beet and burrata, and charred carrots and goat cheese; a station of small

It begins with a choice of Louisiana seafood gumbo, Caesar salad, or steakhouse salad; a main course of an oven roasted turkey breast, sausage and Herb stuffing, homemade gravy and cranberry relish; sides of garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole or creamed spinach and a dessert of pumpkin cheesecake and vanilla ice cream. At the Hotel Emma, Supper restaurant will offer a special for lunch and dinner on Thanksgiving Day that will include dinner to include turkey, stuffing, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, cranberry sauce, gravy and pumpkin pie. Chef John Brand is also planning a special Christmas dinner. Reservations are strongly encouraged. Oro restaurant at the Emily Morgan Hotel will offer three-course Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day dinners. {Tea} Party On! By Carole Miller
Are your little ones not so little anymore? Have they outgrown chicken nuggets and restaurants with playgrounds? Or maybe the children in your life just appreciate a more sophisticated vibe. Might I suggest a spot of tea as a unique way to capture their attention. The whole tea time experience is fantastic to share with anyone when the goal is to slow-down, relax, have a conversation, and connect. In jolly old England, the proper ladies and gents share a spot of tea in the afternoon. It became fashionable in the early 19th century thanks to Anna, Duchess of Bedford. Served at 4 p.m. (or thereabouts), it was intended to fill in the long gap between lunch and dinner. The tradition is still quintessentially British with the Ritz in London being the most renowned place to find a truly timeless afternoon tea experience. TEA IN TEXAS? Believe it or not, there are several places right here in the wild, wild West to find low tea, high tea, Japanese tea and everything in between. Why should teddy bears and Barbie dolls have all the fun? Going out for tea is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with multi-generational appeal. LOW TEA OR HIGH TEA? Afternoon tea belonged to the aristocracy because laborers obviously did not have time to stop working mid-day to snack on scones. Therefore, tea time had to wait till after quitting time. The

tea of the working class was accompanied by heartier dishes and a pot of strong tea to revive their spirits. Since these households served their tea on low, comfortable parlor chairs or relaxing in the garden, it became known as “low tea.” High tea, on the other hand, belonged to the wealthy who took their tea at a proper table with high-backed chairs. It was (and still is) served with finger sandwiches, scones and cake to stave off that midafternoon slump. WHAT ABOUT JAPANESE TEA? Tea in Japan is an experience full of meaning and ritual. It is based on the philosophy that each meeting should be treasured, for it can never be reproduced. (And every mother knows how true that is.) The Japanese tea ceremony is full of intricate rituals and is referred to as “The Way of Tea,” an ancient ritual involving blending matcha, a Japanese green tea, with traditional sweets to balance the flavor of the bitter tea leaves. The Japanese version of Great Britain’s low tea is called chakai and includes sweets, a light tea and a small meal. Chaji is similar to high tea because it is more formal and lasts much longer. It usually includes a full-course meal followed by dessert and both a bold tea and a thinner tea. TEA FOR TWO AND TWO FOR TEA The Garden Tea Lounge is located inside Craftiques Mall on San Antonio’s north side abaout 20 minutes from downtown. Stroll through the marketplace full of unique, handmade items and tucked inside is a marvelous place to enjoy both high and low teas. Garden Tea Lounge offers 40 organic loose leaf teas. (Tip: Try the Golden Monkey Black—it’s very smooth with notes of caramel and chocolate.) You can also order high or low tea at this quaint place. Both high and low tea

are served with scones with berry compote and Devonshire fruit, tea sandwiches, soup or salad, a side dish (or two) and a dessert. Mad Hatters Tea Room has an extensive tea selection offering everything from black, green, red and white to herbal, oolong, certified kosher, organic, gluten-free, fair trade and non-GMO tea options. Try the Tea Party for Two served at your table on a 3-tiered tower with a pot of hot tea to share. High Tea includes a scone, petit fours and tea sandwiches. Afternoon Tea Includes scones, petit fours and tea sandwiches. There’s even a kids’ tea with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. This downtown treasure is located within the King William District. Both Garden Tea Lounge and Mad Hatters offer private parties for all ages. For an Asian twist on your tea experience, visit the serene Jingu House Café. Stroll through the lush gardens filled with shaded walkways, stone bridges, a 60-foot waterfall and lily ponds filled with Koi just minutes from downtown at the Japanese Tea Garden in Brackenridge Park. Jingu House Café has a great selection sushi, sandwiches, salads and wraps. Or share a pot of tea and a Bento Box with Asian noodles, a California roll, crab and cucumber salad with seaweed and ginger lime side salad. But most importantly, pay attention to the beauty surrounding you, slowly pour and savor your tea. Instead of wolfing down your meal, relish the flavors of each and every bite. Simply enjoy the serenity at a table overlooking the pavilion and the beautiful gardens with the sounds of the waterfall in the background. You can even participate in a morning meditation or yoga class. Escape. Together. It’s worth all the tea in China.

HISTORIC THEATRES
ATMOSPHERE WITH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION
America’s historic movie palaces take us back to a grander, gilded past. It’s a glamorous vibe recalled in many cities today, where vintage vaudeville and movie houses have been revived to house today’s performing arts.
18 RIO Magaane
Susan Yerkes
“Even if the movie’s not good, you can still look around and have a good time,” As the renaissance movement for America’s downtowns, and for their formerly sumptuous old theatres, rose, San Antonio was in the forefront. The historic downtown entertainment district boasts three of the most beautifully resurrected movie palaces anywhere, all of them vibrant venues for live entertainment ensconced in unforgettable surroundings. Two of the three, the historic Majestic and Empire theatres, sit on two sides of the same downtown block smack in the heart of the city, at Houston and St. Mary’s Streets. Both went dark for years, and both were lovingly restored by the nonprofit Las Casas Foundation, a nonprofit created in the late 1980s by San Antonio philanthropist and arts advocate Joci Straus. In 1989, the year the Majestic re-opened, the two theatres were re-christened the San Antonio Performing Arts Center, now the Joci Straus Performing Arts Center. While Las Casas holds the long term lease, both theatres are managed by Arts Center Enterprises, part of the multi-national Ambassador Theatrical Group The Majestic, designed by famous movie palace architect John Eberson, is an experience in itself. Opened in 1929, it was largest movie theatre in the South, and the first fully air conditioned theatre in Texas. It was such a sensation that Texas society dames actually wore fur coats to the June, 1929 opening. It also had a nursery and on-site baby sitters, so that parents could munch their popcorn
undisturbed. Inside, the Majestic is a crazy mix of rococo elements. Baroque, Mediterranean, Spanish Mission and Ottoman empire styles jostle for attention. Intricate ivycovered faux balconies, murals, statues, cherubs, a bell tower – even a glorious stuffed white peacock (replaced this year with a new one from a California taxidermist for a cool $3,600) are arrayed around the three-story interior, all the way up to the steep “nosebleed” balcony seats, where minority movie-goers were once restricted to segregated sections for the first few decades of the theatre’s life. Raise your eyes to the painted, star-splashed blue dome of the ceiling, sometimes crossed by drifting white clouds. (The “stars” were arranged after consulting with the National Geographic Society, which advised the theatre as to positions of actual stars in the sky that opening night in 1929). “Even if the movie’s not good, you can still look around and have a good time,” said Maggie Valentine, author of “The Show Starts on the Sidewalk,” a history of American movie theatres. Indeed, the Majestic has played host to some rich experiences, from the star-studded premiere of Ron Howard’s 2004 movie, “The Alamo” to a State Dinner hosted by then-President George W. Bush to mark the original NAFTA treaty signing. The San Antonio Symphony, once the restored Majestic’s anchor tenant, has now moved

to the new Tobin Center. But it’s still home to many live performances, a “Broadway Across America” season and live concerts – most recently, George Strait’s all-star “Hand in Hand” show to benefit Hurricane Harvey victims.
Matisyahu’s “Common Kings” show and a Flamenco extravaganza at the Empire, and a range of shows from the touring production of the “So You Think You Can Dance” finals to Broadway’s hot “Hip-Hop Nutcracker” at the Majestic.
Just around the corner from the Majestic, and connected by backstage space, sits the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, a “jewel-box” of a small space, once given up for dead, now spectacularly restored in gleaming white and gold. First opened in 1879 as the Turner Opera House, the theatre went through several name changes before it was christened the Empire Opera House, which was destroyed by fire. In 1913, the Empire rose again as the largest, most modern theatre in town, with electric lights and ceiling fans. Opulent European styling was enhanced by 12 pounds of shimmering gold leaf shimmering on the creamy white walls. Vaudeville acts and the hottest new entertainment – silent movies – shared the Empire stage, and Hollywood’s hottest emerging stars, including Mae West and Charlie Chaplin, appeared there. But a catastrophic flood in 1921, which wiped out much of downtown, left the Empire severely damaged. Mold grew in the walls, the gold leaf was coated with white paint, and the theatre slowly fell into disrepair. In its final days, as a home for adult films in a declining downtown, it was informally known as “the Impure” for the cheap adult films that played there. A caricature of its glorious beginnings, the Empire finally closed in 1978. But after Las Casas’ transformative renovations, it regained all its early glitter and more when it opened again in 1989 as the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, in honor of the wife of Texas billionaire and former San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Vikings owner “Red” McCombs, who donated a million-plus to the restoration.
The third and most recently renovated of S.A.’s spectacular movie palaces has a completely different cultural feel. The Aztec, opened in 1926 just blocks from the Majestic and Empire, was a prime example of the ‘20s craze for exotic décor – in this case, a crazy combo of MesoEmpire Theater marquee American themes, with wild, brightly-colored columns and murals, including dramatic reproductions of striking pre-Columbian artifacts. Aztec, Olmec, Mixtec, Zapotec, Toltec and Mayan symbols and architectural elements elbow for space in the interior, now restored and refurbished, with a private “Warrior Room” for special reception and meetings. Sadly, the huge “sacrificial stone” that once graced the theatre’s lobby is long gone, but the magnificent , two-ton crystal chandelier, first installed in 1929 on the exact same day the U.S stock market went to hell, is gorgeously restored and still dominates the lobby. Since its restoration in the early 2000s the Aztec has gone through a couple of owners, and today is a Live Nation venue, with bookings this month ranging from concerts by Ottmar Liebert, Iron & Wine and Blue October to Extreme Midget Wrestling and World Body Building Federation finals.
For a behind-the-scenes look at the Empire and Majestic, the Las Casas Foundation can arrange group tours. But the best way to experience them in their full glory is at a live show. This month, performances include
While tastes in entertainment change, audiences will always love unforgettable ambience. And for any folks, the atmosphere alone is worth the price of admission in San Antonio’s three historic downtown movie palaces. SHOPPING LOCAL Every Day Should Be Small Business Saturday By Dawn Robinette
Bird and Pear
The countdown is on for the biggest shopping rush of the year, the crazy time when shoppers go glassy-eyed thinking of everyone on their gift lists. Contrary to popular opinion, the best way to beat the shopping crazies isn’t sitting around ordering everything online. To find the perfect gifts that really show you care, shopping local is the way to go.
22 RIO Magazine
www.thesanantonioriverwalk.
BETWEEN BLACK FRIDAY AND CYBER MONDAY, BE SURE TO INK SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY ON YOUR CALENDAR AND GIVE GIFTS THAT WILL BE WELCOMED AND ENJOYED FOR YEARS TO COME. Small Business Saturday, November 25 this year, is a holiday shopping nod to the local businesses that help give our neighborhoods—and our economy—a boost. Thanks to the fantastic array of local retail we enjoy, Small Business Saturday could easily be every day in San Antonio. Whether you’re ready to tackle your holiday list or simply wanting to treat yourself, you don’t have to roam far to find the solution. And the stores themselves are so fun, you’ll be happy you put down the screen and purchased in person versus simply shopping online. Adelante Boutique is a San Antonio institution, adding fashion and heirloom pieces to the wardrobes of Alamo City women for 42 years. After 35 years in Alamo Heights, Adelante became one of the first retail outlets at Pearl and is now a colorful fixture you can’t miss. Its window displays draw you into a store filled with light, color and happiness reflected in everything from shoes to jackets and fabulous jewelry, as well as Charlie, the resident dog greeter-in-charge who makes every shopper his new best friend. With new items arriving weekly, Adelante is always on trend, but with unique twists that give shoppers more novelty to make their choices a bit more distinct than what everyone else might be wearing. There’s nothing plain about the color, embroidery, and options you’ll find and with a healthy selection of gifts guaranteed to make anyone laugh, it’s the perfect spot to shop for friends, too. Another Pearl shop that brings creative color to life is Dos Carolinas. Since 1987, Dos Carolinas has been go-to for exquisite, custom-made guayaberas. Not sure what that is? Comfort, style, and fashion rolled into breathable shirts that rival the best men’s dress shirts in custom fit, drape
and feel. Think tropical style kicked up a notch with custom fit with custom style. Each shirt—or dress, as women are certainly not forgotten at Dos Carolinas—can be made with your choice of fabric and stitching for the perfect San Antonio-chic gift. Natural, breathable fabrics in every color or pattern you can think of, paired with your choice of thread for custom embroidery in 36 different type of stitches. When Lone Star Café opened in an old building on the horseshoe bend of the River Walk in 1982, it was during a time of renewed interest in the River Walk that led to the development of the attraction we enjoy today. Stan Albeck was coaching the San Antonio Spurs in the HemisFair Arena with “The Iceman,” George Gervin, on the team. Henry Cisneros was Mayor of San Antonio. Back then, the River Walk didn’t look like it does today. As far back as the 1920’s, architect Robert H.H. Hugman, had envisioned an “America Venice” with restaurants and shops lining picturesque sidewalks along the waterway. He suggested dining balconies with iron railings, canopies for shade, and footbridges to cross the river. City leaders did not initially share his vision – and flooding was an occasional obstacle to the beautification project. By the time San Antonio hosted the World’s Fair in 1968, a handful of restaurants had opened on the river. Quite a few establishments opened and closed in fairly short order and it really took more than a decade for San Antonians to catch on to the natural beauty of the river and its possibilities as a world-class destination. The founders of Lone Star Café, a local couple with young children, left the building’s brick walls exposed and decorated the dining rooms with old metal signs and antler chandeliers. A jukebox wailed from a corner when live performers weren’t entertaining diners. The menu, bordered in red and white gingham, offered “Steaks – Catfish – Longnecks.” An old carved wooden Indian was a favorite photo opp for guests – but back then, selfies hadn’t been invented yet.
thesanantonioriverwalk.com
In 1988, musician Aaron Barker was a regular performer at Lone Star Café – entertaining San Antonio visitors with covers of Willie Nelson and George Jones. Occasionally he would play his own songs and unbeknownst to him, one of them made its way to a singer named George Strait who recorded it. Barker was still selling produce on the side of the road (his day job) when he received a check for $55,000. “Baby Blue” – from Strait’s album, If You Ain’t Lovin’ You Ain’t Livin,’ had hit Number 1 on the country music chart. Today visitors come from far and wide to enjoy a steak on the Lone Star Café patio with the best views of the river! They take selfies with the black steer on display since 2012 by well-known Texas taxidermist Jimmy Dieringer of Woodbury Taxidermy. His work is featured in the South Texas Heritage Center and at the famous YO Ranch. Lone Star Café is proud of its’ long and colorful story. Even the old building once housed the Original Mexican Food Restaurant, the first restaurant to serve Mexican food in the country, in the early 1900’s. Proprietor Otis Farnsworth served enchiladas and chiles rellenos on fine china plates to gentlemen wearing jackets. Today, we still use china plates, but you can come as you are!

MOST WONDERFUL. FORD HOLIDAY RIVER PARADE The 37th annual Ford Holiday River Parade is an iconic way to kick-off the holiday season. This year’s grand marshal is local resident Cheryl Ladd, famous for her role in the hit TV show, “Charlie’s Angels,” from 1977-1981. Cheryl is also known for her role in Disney’s “Santa Paws 2,” the 2012 film where she and four puppies save Christmas. Ladd remains active in movies, television, and theater, and is a national ambassador of Childhelp, a nonprofit dedicated to the prevention of child abuse. She also serves on the board of the local Las Casas Foundation, dedicated to the development of the performing arts through education and scholarships, and historic theatre preservation. The theme of this year’s parade is Christmas at the Movies. Twentyeight illuminated floats will pay homage to vintage and contemporary Christmas movies, including “A Christmas Story,” “Muppet Christmas,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and “Charlie Brown Christmas”. South Texas Ford Dealers are the title sponsor of the parade, with Santikos Entertainment and Visit San Antonio as presenting sponsors.
The 2016 parade sold out. Fifty thousand people lined the banks of the 2.5-mile route along the San Antonio River, which begins at 6 p.m. north of downtown at El Tropicano Hotel on Lexington and winds its way downtown, passing through the Henry B. González Convention Center, the Shops at Rivercenter and the Arneson River Theatre. The parade will be syndicated nationally throughout the holiday season, and last year’s parade was viewed on television by more than 1 million people. It will broadcast live locally on KABB/CW 35 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. RIVER WALK LIGHTS Since 1969, the River Walk has displayed 100,000 twinkle lights hung from more than 200 majestic Bald Cypress trees along the downtown area. City employees begin hanging the 2,250 strings of lights the day after Labor Day, a six to eight-week process, depending upon the weather. In 2011, the city began using brighter, safer and more energy-efficient LED lights to illuminate the 75- to 100-foot tall trees that grace this downtown linear park.

According to the San Antonio River Walk Association, a nonprofit organization who collaborates with the City of San Antonio to hang the lights each year, these many strands of lights would stretch from the Alamo to Bulverde, a small town that’s 26 miles north of San Antonio. Holiday revelers will also enjoy hopping on one of the new GO Rio boats to cruise beneath the enchanting lights while learning about some of San Antonio’s fascinating history, or you may simply stroll along the River Walk, taking in the various floating choirs who will serenade you with your favorite holiday songs. Stop in the Westin Riverwalk for beautiful in-house made Christmas cookies and a hot mug of hot chocolate. To add to San Antonio’s merriment, the San Antonio River Authority has added lights north of downtown along the Museum Reach of the River Walk since 2012. This year’s River of Lights celebration will kick off on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. with Santa’s Wonderland on the Brooklyn Avenue Bridge. Enjoy free photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, holiday music, chocolate and dessert food trucks, and works by artisan vendors. This year’s event will feature a 30-foot pixel tree created out of lights by San Antonio resident Matt Johnson, the mastermind behind nationally acclaimed holiday light shows. His work, which includes his home, has been featured on ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” and more. Businesses along this portion of the River Walk will decorate their riverfacing facades, and the public will have the opportunity to select their 28 RIO Magazine

We all know the best way to keep calories at bay is not to over-eat. But with the holidays looming those odds seem highly unlikely. My calorie burning solution of choice is to run, not to a buffet, but through our streets and parks. As a local runner, I hope my tips inspire you to get your feet on the street.
FEET ON THE
STREET By Gabriela Mata
STEP 1: BLAZING TRAILS San Antonio is blessed with countless running trails which comes in handy when working off that second slice of pumpkin pie with whip cream. Get out there and get your heart pumping while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. This first venue may surprise you despite being a public park. I’m speaking of the River Walk which offers 15-miles of winding sidewalks along the prettiest trails anywhere in town. Downtown River Walk running is best in the early morning before the throngs of visitors begin strolling past hotels, shops, and restaurants. An early morning River Walk run is not only inspiring, it’s well lit and safe (if you fall in, that’s on you), and you can incorporate stairs if you like by crossing over one of over half a dozen footbridges downtown. The river and the sidewalks continue south of downtown for another nine-miles with much wider sidewalks and open space. Embedded in the sidewalks are mile markers with downtown San Fernando Cathedral as your starting point. The scenery changes too with ample wildlife including turtles, birds, butterflies, and more. Four UNESCO recognized missions are located just off the path. Visiting the missions is a good excuse for a rest. Brackenridge Park, located four miles north of downtown, and right next to the San Antonio Zoo, is a runners paradise. The park has its own set of trails loaded with history and charm. Plus if it’s quiet enough you can hear the animals from the nearby San Antonio Zoo and pretend they’re chasing you. Further north, 13-miles northwest of downtown, is Phil Hardberger Park. Hardberger park provides the best variety of trails from paved to unpaved. If running alone, be sure to let someone know where and always wear reflective gear if running at night. STEP 2: FILL UP Now, this is my favorite part. Okay, I know this section is about health but let’s be real the only reason I exercise is so I can eat but in this case, I’m eating exclusively to use these calories for running. Don’t be afraid if you’re on a special diet like Keto, I’ll find you some places to chow down too.
Pink dragonfly, Mission Reach
Let’s start off with the famous carb load. I distinctly remember my runner friends having spaghetti nights before big races but we’re all grown ups here so let’s go with better options. My first pick is going to be Tre Trattoria located 5 miles north (Bonus it’s near Brackenridge, are you sensing a pattern here). If you’re a fan of Food Network’s Iron Chef Gauntlet you’ll be familiar with the name Jason Dady and even better you’ll be able to taste his cooking for yourself. I hear the Campanelle Bolognese makes your gait extra fast but don’t take my word for it. Paisanos has a location on the River Walk for your running convenience and features a multitude of choices. I love sitting outside and watching the people also the weather is much more agreeable and that makes eating pasta a lot more fun. Like I said if you’re on a special diet such as keto, then you’ve got two churrascarias at your service within a distance of the River Walk. Keep this in mind you could run to them but eating in your activewear probably won’t get you in. Opt for smart attire. If you’re not familiar with the term churrascaria it’s a Brazilian steakhouse where you can get all the meat you want. I repeat endless meat. Fogo de Chao is located at the Shops at Rivercenter and Texas de Brazil located on Houston Street. Both are in the middle of downtown. Each has its own unique charm so why not visit both.

STEP 3: LACE UP Good footwear is a crucial step (pun intended) to achieve your running goals. Who wants to run with shin splints or sore feet? That’s where buying from a specialty running store comes in; trained employees help you select shoes that fit and match your running goals. Fleet Feet Sports is located conveniently about 7 miles north of downtown in the Alamo Quarry. They also have a location about 16 miles northwest if you’re not staying downtown. Their philosophy is real to “help you find the right ‘’FIT’’ in every facet of your active lifestyle”. And if you’re like me and have a million questions they’ll happily answer all of them. Located less than a mile south of downtown is San Antonio Running Company. I like the
downtown proximity and they offer yoga and post-run recovery drinks. STEP 4: RECOVERY Part of a great training plan is including a great recovery plan. So other than changing out of wet clothes, post-run stretching and post-run nutrition/ hydration you need to look into a spa day. A post-run pamper is great motivation to keep running. Two elegant spas located on the River Walk are DASA at Hyatt Regency San Antonio and Mokara located at the Mokara Hotel. WRITERS BIO Gabriela Mata is the founder and creator of @sanantoniolovelist on Instagram with an upcoming blog launching in Fall 2017. Although not originally from San Antonio she has explored the city through her constant search to find the coolest murals and parks.

SLEUTHING ON THE SAN ANTONIO RIVER WALK Readers’ Review: I have visited the San Antonio River Walk. I wish I had read this book first.
Humor, sadness, suspense, and tragedy—something for everyone. Like taking a vacation while reading a mystery... a great series with fun characters.
Aggie is funny, really funny. This book is categorized as a humorous mystery, but it is much more.
THE PERFECT KEEPSAKE ! Available in all formats in stores & online. https://tinyurl.com/RiverCityDead-paperback www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

R ESTAU R AN T S
La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.
