ON THE COVER Schilo’s Delicatessen, the oldest restaurant in San Antonio, is celebrating 100-years in business this month. Schilo’s started as a saloon in the 1900s in Beeville, TX. In 1914 Papa Fritz Schilo moved the saloon and his family to San Antonio. In 1917, Mama Schilo started serving some of her classic German recipes. On the River Walk, plenty of meat is what’s for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Here are a few places where carnivores can sink their teeth into some good eating.

BREAKFAST What better way to start the day than with an order of steak and eggs?

At Ruth’s Chris Steak House in the Grand Hyatt Hotel, the Prime Steak and Eggs is either a 12-ounce New York strip or a 6-ounce filet mignon with two eggs cooked any style, rosemary-infused potatoes and a side of béarnaise. So that you know, the New York strip was the favorite cut of restaurant founder Ruth Fertel.

While you’re admiring the view that’s a short escalator ride from the hotel lobby, also consider the breakfast that bears her name, Eggs Fertel. It’s a take on eggs Benedict that features English muffins topped with 3-ounce filets in place of the traditional Canadian bacon.

Another take on the Benedict features house-made crawfish sausage -- and it’s one of the most popular items on the breakfast menu.

DINNER Instead of a table right on the river, find a spot with a good view overlooking other patrons feasting on Argentinian-style parrillada at Dorrego’s in the Hotel Valencia. The restaurant, named after a famous plaza in Buenos Aires, offers a combination of chilerubbed grass-fed beef short ribs, Ibérico pork shoulder, Wagyu beef shoulder, and morcilla, an Argentine blood sausage that’s so delicate and tender, it will overcome all your hesitation about the dish. The Spanish floor tiles, dark wood and plenty of natural light complement the platter, and the entire menu. Sip on a Malbec while you take it all in.

When it comes to Halloween, there are two types of kids. Some love to be scared out of their wits by ghouls, goblins, and gore. Others think of Halloween as a golden ticket from Willy Wonka to a magical Candyland filled with characters and costumes.

Luckily, the Alamo City has many Halloween activities for both.

For some kids (and parents), Halloween can be summed up in one word: C-A-N-D-Y! Trick-or-treating is the main focus, and everyone knows the better the costume, the better the treats. From nightfall to midnight, take the family trick-or-treating along the famous River Walk filled with eerie sounds, friendly roaming ghouls, and zombies during the Bud Light Haunted River celebration. The Arneson River Theater is the place to be if you want to get dressed up and see some of the best costumes in town, enjoy music and dancing to round out a slightly-spooky night of fun. There is an adult-only costume contest, but the fun is for the whole family. Don’t miss the river parade filled with costumed riders as it circles twice around the entire downtown loop of the River Walk.

Everything is free Or go for an underwater adventure under-the-sea and frolic amongst the colorful ocean creatures while trick-or-treating through SeaWorld. Burn off all that sugar and work as a team to make your way through the hay maze. And a visit to the furry friends at Pet’s Ahoy to see their special Halloween show is a must. Beware of all the Ghouls and Goblins Howl-O-Scream at Sea World

Nightfall awakens hundreds of creatures roaming six scare zones and lurking the halls of five haunted houses after dark and Seaworld’s scare level increases from haunting to horrifying, as Howl-O-Scream transforms the peaceful park you once knew into something sinister. A Victorian lady wafts like smoke through carpeted corridors. Invisible forces knock the bottles from bar shelves and clang through restaurant kitchens. Grizzled old soldiers in vintage uniforms march silently in the night. Sad-eyed Native Americans appear and disappear.

Downtown, especially, is a hotbed of historic haunting, from ghosts at the Alamo to grisly murders in historic hotels. And if you love to feel the hair rise on the back of your neck, there’s no need to wait for Halloween to indulge in some spine-tingling ghost stories.

thin air, the soldiers turned and fled. Soon after, when a second Mexican company was sent back to destroy the Long Barrack adjacent to the chapel, a towering male spirit suddenly sprang up from the roof of the building, holding flaming fireballs in his outstretched hands. Those soldiers, too, took to their heels. According to some, the designer of the imposing marble Alamo Cenotaph in front of the mission memorialized that apparition as the winged Spirit of Sacrifice that dominates the monument.

Some of the most storied ghosts are said to populate the grounds of the Alamo.

One hallowed legend takes place months after the 1836 massacre at the Alamo when Mexican General Santa Anna sent troops back to the site to raze the battered mission chapel to the ground. When six ghostly monks, whirling flaming swords above their heads, materialized from

In the 1890s, when the Alamo was temporarily used as a city jail, local newspapers ran several reports of prisoners terrified by eerie phantoms, some said to rise from the old mission cemetery that lies beneath part of Alamo Plaza. A tall, silent Native American presence has been known to slip in and out of a wall in a basement beneath the Alamo, where a door once led to a tunnel.

Park rangers have reported a ghostly figure in buckskins and a coonskin cap on the grounds.

Another, in a long black duster and black cowboy hat drenched with rain, as though he has ridden through a downpour, is said to be the spirit of one of the riders that Alamo commander Col. William

San Antonio’s history is long and complex. In many places, the past permeates the present.

So it’s understandable that some call this one of America’s most haunted places.

Travis sent out to beg for reinforcements for the besieged fortress. The smoky upper body of a mourning woman has been seen floating through the garden on the grounds. The spirit of a young, blonde-haired boy is one of the most frequently spotted Alamo ghosts, appearing in an upstairs window or wandering the grounds. Some believe he was sent out of the fort to safety before the battle, and returns to seek his father, who died there.

There are plenty of fabled hauntings beyond the Alamo. Some of the bestknown spirits­ —32 distinct ghosts, no less!—have been spotted at the historic Menger Hotel. The most famous ghost is undoubtedly that of President Theodore Roosevelt. Long before he hit the White House, Teddy set up camp in downtown San Antonio and recruited volunteers in the Menger’s bar for the militia he was taking to fight the Spanish-American War. The magnificent old bar, built in 1887 as a replica of London’s House of Lords Pub, was renamed for Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, and Roosevelt’s spirit is said to return occasionally to check it out. The Menger’s most frequently sighted ghost is that of Sallie White, a chambermaid in the 1870s who was murdered by her husband in the hotel. Some night she is spotted by visitors, wearing her old uniform and a bandana on her head, carrying clean towels from room to room. The ghost of late 19th-century ranching legend Captain Richard King, who spent the last months of his life and died in his personal suite at the Menger.

Today the hotel capitalizes on its spooky history, offering a “Haunted Stay” package, ghost tours and even excursions to Ripley’s Haunted Adventure, just across Alamo Plaza, the 13th Floor Haunted House near the Pearl complex, and an evening at Sea World of San Antonio’s October Howl-O-Scream. On weekends starting Oct. 15, the Sisters Grimm tour company offers All Hallows Eve Dinner, and Ghost Tour events at the Menger, including spooky three-course dinners, tours of the hotel’s ghostly sites and downtown Ghost Walks. (On Oct. 15, the Sisters Grimm also offer an exclusive graveyard tour of San Antonio’s most historic city cemetery, where the legendary dead range from Texas heroes to a wealthy socialite who was buried in her sports car).

Downtown’s historic Sheraton Gunter Hotel is the site of one of San Antonio’s grisliest, and more modern, ghost stories. It stems from the bloody “Meat Grinder Murder” in 1965. A maid entered Room 636, to find a man standing by a blood-soaked bed with a crimson bundle in his arms.

She screamed and ran. By the time police responded, the man was gone, the room was completely drenched in gore, and small pieces of flesh were the only remnants of a body ever found. The Emily Morgan Hotel, the Casino Club building on the River Walk, the Bonham Exchange, the old theater district, the grounds of San Fernando Cathedral and Milam Park and many other downtown spots have proved fertile hunting ground for folks seeking ghostly adventure, according to Wolf Holt, of Bad Wolf Ghost Tours. His company offers San Antonio’s only Haunted Pub Crawl, a tour of several friendly night spots where sprightly spirits have been known to materialize or manifest themselves through paranormal pranks. The Bonham and Moses Rose’s, named for the most infamous Alamo deserter, are regular stops on the delightfully creepy crawl.

Many ghost tours also take in Victoria’s Black Swan Inn, a few miles east of downtown’s heart. Said to be one of the most haunted buildings anywhere, the historic old inn lies near the confluence of two major Texian-Mexican battles, and its ghosts include soldiers from both sides, and the spirits of long-ago guests.

This month, with Halloween and the Day of the Dead just around the corner, let the eerie spirits of San Antonio scare the “boo” out of you. Our town is not only a great spot for lively entertainment; it’s also a mecca for ghostly gallivanting.

Take a look around, and you’ll notice bright, smiling sugar skulls everywhere. And not just human skulls—you’ll see cat and dog skulls smiling at you on a wide array of merchandise, too. From rain boots and coffee mugs to kitchen towels and doormats—and everything in between—sugar skulls are popping up far from any altars created to honor deceased loved ones. And that’s where the fun truly begins.

You’re not alone. Many people aren’t familiar with sugar skulls. Those seemingly happy skeletons, or sugar skulls, are also known as calaveras.

During the celebration of Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead), sugar skulls are used to decorate ofrendas, or offerings to the souls returning on the Day of the Dead. Yes, they are skull-shaped sugar, making them a sweet offering that is often decorated with brightly colored icing, foils and more. Of course, shopping in San Antonio isn’t complete without a visit to La Villita. The shops have a good selection of sugar skull merchandise. Casas Manos Allegres is filled with traditional Mexican folk art, including Dia de los Muertos art, as well as tinwork, ornaments, traditional toys, jewelry and more. A staple in San Antonio since 1971, you can easily find the store thanks to its colorful window displays and gorgeous glass chandeliers peeking through the windows.

Schilo’s Celebrates 100 Years in Business EARNS DISTINCTION AS OLDERST RESTAURANT IN SAN ANTONIO

VISITORS TO DOWNTOWN SAN ANTONIO LOOKING FOR PLACES “WHERE THE LOCALS EAT” WILL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED WHEN THEY “DISCOVER” SCHILO’S The oldest restaurant in San Antonio predates the now internationally recognized River Walk but is certainly not as old as the Alamo. They do, however, keep in the Texan tradition of celebrating their heritage with hearty food, drink, and incomparable character.

In a city showcasing a World Heritage Site – an array of parochial missions built

by Spanish missionaries 300 years ago – one may find it historically interesting that its oldest restaurant is not an old-school Tex-Mex spot but a historic deli tracing its roots to early German settlers. Perhaps this is why they were recently named a Texas Business Treasure by the State’s Historical Commission.

Schilo’s is pronounced SHE-lows. It’s a family name and the establishment’s great journey through the ages started 100 miles south of San Antonio in the small town of Beeville, TX. “Papa” Fritz Schilo opened his saloon in the early 1900s. He then moved both the saloon and his family to San Antonio in 1914. His wife started serving some of her favorite recipes a few years later in 1917. When Prohibition hit America in 1920, Papa Fritz developed a supercharged recipe for root beer that is still being enjoyed by customers. This is the genesis of the iconic restaurant we know today.

Schilo’s occupies a building that once housed a currency exchange bank and so retains its Old World Charm with vintage tile floor, pressed tin ceiling, and limestone interior. A defunct bank vault is now a walk-in cooler and the antique thesanantonioriverwalk.com

mirrored oak bar is said to be from the original 1900s saloon. With historic roots like that, the space has a life of its own.

This is also apparent by the numerous ghost stories employees have shared over the years.

After three generations of Schilos operating the restaurant, the Lyons family bought the restaurant in 1980. Being fifth generation Texans with German roots and restaurateurs, they were able to successfully continue this old-world tradition. If you’ve dined at Casa Rio on the River Walk, you’ve visited their sister restaurant which they started in 1946.

Now days, there are new additions to the menu including breakfast tacos and baked goods from Bakery Lorraine, the city’s best bakery. Yet the service, atmosphere, and quality of the food have remained constant for a century.

To celebrate the century mark, Schilo’s is doing what it does best – serving its popular and timeless favorites such as split pea soup or their own brand of hot mustard that can be shipped home, too.

Next year is San Antonio’s 300th anniversary celebration. The city’s Tricentennial will launch Schilo’s 101st year of continuous operation as a restaurant and Alamo City landmark.

RUNS DEEP IN THE HEART OF SAN ANTONIO

You often hear both Spanish and English spoken on the streets of San Antonio, a sound that goes back for generations. If you’d been a resident of the Alamo City in the second half of the 19th century, you would have also heard German.

From 1847 to 1861, more than seven thousand German immigrants moved to San Antonio, comprising one-third of the county’s population at the time.

A German-English School, now used as an event venue at the Marriott Plaza San Antonio hotel, taught English, German, Spanish, writing, poetry, history, arithmetic, algebra, sewing and singing to local children from 1858 to 1893, according to the Texas State Historical Association.

KING WILLIAM NEIGHBORHOOD The land now occupied by the King William Historic and Cultural Arts District south of downtown along the San Antonio River were once irrigated farmland belonging to The Alamo, according to Cherise Bell, executive director of the King William Association.

Carl Guenther, a German miller, purchased the southwestern section of the area in 1859 and established a mill and his home there. Pioneer Flour Mill still exists today with the house now serving as a restaurant that’s open daily from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Other prosperous German businessmen followed and had their ornate, architect-designed homes built. The influx of Germans earned the area the nickname “Sauerkraut Bend.” Home styles include German Vernacular, Greek Revival and Victorian and almost 50 remain.

The neighborhood fell into disrepair until Walter Mathis, a local investment banker and preservationist, bought and restored 14 homes in the seventies.

His 1876-era home, Villa Finale, a National Trust property, is open to visitors, as is the Steves Homestead. A free cellphone audio tour of the King William neighborhood is available at the Villa Finale Visitor Center and free walking tour brochures are available at the King William Association.

BEETHOVEN MAENNERCHOR At least half of the members of Maennerchor, an all-men’s German choir, are native speakers, and one of the oldest German singing societies in Texas. It was founded in 1867 and celebrated its 150th birthday this year.

Maennerchor, is rounded out by the Damenchor, an all-women’s choir; the Kinderchor, a children’s choir; Germania Chor, a mixed choir; a concert band; a dance band; and German folk dancers. First Fridays, Gartenfest concerts, and Oktoberfest, draw crowds to the famous Beethoven Biergarten—a place you want to hang out.

SCHILO’S DELICATESSEN Papa Fritz Schilo opened a saloon in San Antonio in 1914, but Prohibition closed it down in 1920. Fortunately for Papa Fritz, Mama Schilo had started serving food at the saloon in 1917, so they stayed in business and added homemade root beer into the mix. Schilo’s is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, making it San Antonio’s longest operating restaurant.

Schilo’s moved from South Alamo Street to Commerce Street in 1927 and to its current location in 1942. The restaurant stayed in the Schilo family until 1980, when the Lyons family, owners of Casa Rio Mexican Restaurant, purchased it. Bill Lyons, also of German-American descent, said he is most thesanantonioriverwalk.com

proud of the consistency of Schilo’s food and of their longtime staff, some— like Ursula and Inga—who worked at Schilo’s for decades.

Lyons said that people who ate at Schilo’s as a child return, bringing pleasant memories from way back. The restaurant, once a bank, sports the original tile floors and pressed-tin ceilings, and the oak bar in the back of the restaurant made the trek from Papa Schilo’s first saloon in Beeville, Texas.

Schilo’s is known for its Reuben sandwiches, hot mustard, split pea soup, cheesecake, and homemade root beer. Reasonably priced plate lunches are also a big draw. Even though the restaurant can be crowded at times, Schilo’s is known for getting downtown’s employees and convention attendees in and out quickly.

Rumor has it that the ghost of Mama Schilo still wanders around. I’m pretty sure she’s checking to see whether or not her root beer is up to snuff. Take it from me, it is.

BIER GARTEN Boston may have Cheers, but San Antonio has the Bier Garten. Nestled between the Hyatt Regency Riverwalk and the Alamo, the Bier Garten is a place where people make it a point to know your name.

Blue and white-checked flags atop spacious picnic tables help create a little slice of Germany in downtown San Antonio. Throw in a flight of German beers, salted Bavarian pretzels and live music, and you will be living la vida Alemania.

At a recent visit, my husband and I started off with the Bier Garten’s krautwurst balls. I’m not a huge fan of sauerkraut, so I was a little worried. Not anymore! When you mix pork sausage, cream cheese and sauerkraut that has been rolled into Panko bread crumbs and deep fried, magic occurs.

Next, we shared a paddle topped with knockwurst, bratwurst and polish sausage, sauerkraut, potato salad, a salted pretzel and German mustard. All delicious! We had to get to-go containers so that we could leave a little room for apple strudel and German wine.

Throughout our meal, we enjoyed visiting with fellow guests, including a couple from Virginia in town for a conference, and the Bier Garten’s friendly staff, who know how to encourage people to break out of their shells, dance, and sing. RIVER WALK STROLLING Most people don’t picture San Antonio as an ideal place to see the changing of the seasons.

Especially from summer to autumn as we don’t have the same allure as the northeast but hear me out. San Antonio and more importantly the River Walk has a charm that is pretty unique to this specific location. One of the better things to do in the cooler weather is to enjoy your meal outside at one of the many restaurants located along the River Walk.

One-and-half hours north of San Antonio is Sweet Berry Farm in Marble Falls. Here you can take advantage of a wealth of activities from hayrides and mazes, to stuffing a scarecrow and picking flowers. Pumpkins are also in abundance not only to purchase but in pies and ice cream. They even host fall birthday parties through early November.

I had the privilege of backpacking around Europe three summers ago where I learned to embrace the joy of outdoor dining. To eat outside is considered a treat in Europe and often you pay extra for the privilege. Upon my return stateside, I wanted to repeat the experience in autumn and found myself drawn to the River Walk.

The largest corn maize in the area and the closest is Circle N Farm in La Vernia, TX. Another place I plan on taking Quebec (poor dog, he’s a Chiweenie and walking is too much sometimes so he’s more like a chi-whiney) is the Circle N Maze. Moral of the story: take your dog with you if you can.

Lost Maples

NATURE & THE ADRENALINE JUNKIE To soak in the postcard beauty of Texas fall foliage take a road trip to Lost Maples. Pack a nutritious lunch and lots of water and prepare for a hike that leads through breathtaking views.

I’d leave little dogs home for this one. Check their website for a foliage report to ensure your drive will produce a show of color (it’s weather-related). One thing to make sure to bring is your Passport To Your National Parks. I recently started mine and used it while visiting the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) sanctioned San Antonio Missions.

If you’re up for the ultimate adventure, zip lining is the way to go.

At the Natural Bridge Caverns, the Canopy Challenge is a thrill ride that can rival the breathtaking views of nature.

Just remember the cooler weather is nature’s way of telling us to go outside. So turn off the TV and explore the world around you and bring your dog (if you can).

VISITORS WELCOME

For many, a pet is a member of the family and leaving them home is not an option. Among people that own pets, 61 percent have traveled with them citing they enjoy spending a vacation with their furry friend.

68 percent or about 85 million U.S. families have pets with most Americans describing themselves as “dog people.” And many of those travelers and their dogs are coming to San Antonio’s River Walk, the most popular tourist attraction in Texas.

The City of San Antonio, Center City Development, Visit San Antonio, the River Walk Association, and the San Antonio River Authority commissioned a yearlong study to learn more about visitors to the River Walk.

The study found 11.5 million people visit the River Walk annually. And 9.3 million of those visitors are from outside Bexar County.

Not only is the River Walk dog-friendly many businesses cater to the little (and big) fellas.

Rita’s on the River has a pet menu and supplies containers for serving them food and water. Market On Houston Street restaurant, located within the Sheraton Gunter Hotel does too. In fact, a water bowl on the sidewalk is a permanent fixture. Both restaurants have outdoor patio seating that is as nice for our four-legged friends as it is for the two-legged variety.

That’s why Kerry and Dan Nolan recently visited the Alamo City and had lunch with their dog “Bro” on a River Walk patio. The couple is from McAllen. This was Dan’s first visit to San Antonio. “One of the reasons we came was because we knew ‘Bro’ could come with us,” Kerry explained.

Lincoln St. George, Center City Development Office Operation Manager, City of San Antonio, says he has seen an increasing number of visitors and their dogs spending time along the river. “There are no ordinances governing dogs on the River Walk. But we do ask that all dogs be on a leash.” And he added, “There is no swimming in the river. Dogs or humans.”

Many San Antonio hotels and motels are pet-friendly such as The Crockett Hotel. Some may require a pet deposit but many do not.

Finding a pet-friendly hotel is a snap if visitors do a little research before they arrive in town.

One website, www.bringfideo.com, specializes in identifying petfriendly hotels, motels, restaurants and more in dozens of cities across the U.S. including San Antonio.

The site features reviews of dog-friendly eateries, accommodations, dog parks, a variety of pet services and almost anything else one might need to know when traveling with Fido. Always remember to confirm before your journey begins.

It is also important to pack and bring with you everything your dog may need such as prescription drugs, leashes, favorite toys, and Fido’s food.

San Antonio Veterinarian Dr. Lauri Jehl, Animal Hills Animal Hospital, recommends that pet parents, “Should be sure your animal is microchipped and the data is up to date -- updated phone number and an alternative number as well. If your dog gets loose and runs off, a microchip is the best insurance you can have to help get her back.”

Dr. Jehl also suggests pet parents “bring a crate when traveling. When pets are in a different environment, they often get nervous and can get into trouble if left unattended in a hotel or motel room or even in your RV. You should also bring vaccination records and your pet’s medical history if they have issues so a local Vet will know how to examine and treat your dog in an emergency. San Antonio has several Emergency Veterinary Clinics, “ Dr. Jehl added, “which is available to visitors. Plus your hometown Veterinarian may be able to recommend a Vet in San Antonio, should you need one.”

When visiting the River Walk with your dog, Dr. Jehl urges that pet parents not use retractable leashes. “They don’t give you control over your dog and on the River Walk where space is at a premium.

Better to bring a fixed length quality leash,” Jehl says.

Canine Etiquette San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) Officer Doug Greene confirms there are no specific regulations governing dogs on the River Walk. But SAPD asks that a pet owner: Have dogs on a short leash due to the narrow sidewalks and people walking in both directions.

Control dogs at all times so as not to create a nuisance, such as barking or lurching towards someone when the animal is unprovoked.

Do not leave dogs unattended.

Pick up after their animal at all times.

Keep dogs out of the vegetation along the River Walk.

La Villita, south of the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, was originally settled nearly 300 years ago as one of the city’s first neighborhoods. In 1939, La Villita Historic Arts Village was established and the neighborhood was adapted into a center for teaching regional arts and crafts and to serve as an artists market. Today, nearly 30 shops and galleries offer distinct handcrafted items by artists from San Antonio and surrounding areas. You’ll find paintings, folk art, textiles, sculptures, copper wares, jewelry, and more. Plus, in the midst of these tree-lined walkways and plazas, enjoy a savory culinary experience at the area restaurants with options ranging from traditional Mexican flavors to steakhouse favorites.
