a new look

You may have noticed a wave of ASH concept stores springing up in cities around the world (the latest opened its doors in London). First unveiled in Raffles City and Plaza 66 in Shanghai, the boutiques feature a fresh design concept created by Spanish architect Francesc Rifé. A large brass framework, which is inspired by bamboo scaffolding, dominates each space. Concrete flooring and solid blocks add an urban edge while bare walls are decorated with classic wall moldings that pay tribute to the brand’s European heritage. A glittering gold ceiling is dotted with small circular lights to create the illusion of a starry sky while highlighting the footwear on display below. Bold yet understated details such as natural wood accents, green marble and aged mirrors further reflect the brand’s core values of passion, style and quality.

spotted! It’s no secret that everyone is still addicted to the Addict (the name says it all!) A modern take on Dad sneakers from the 1990s, this must-have style was recently spotted on ASH girls including Anne Hathaway, Amelia Grey Hamlin and Bella Thorne. Gigi Hadid wore hers with denim and activewear, while Jasmine Sanders heated things up by matching her pair with a sexy white swimsuit. Also topping celebrity wish lists? The patent leather Feel boots as spotted on Hailey Baldwin.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Date: April 25, 2018. Location: La Maison Louis Carré, which is about an hour’s drive from Paris. This private house was designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto for French art dealer and collector Louis Carré. Now a protected French monument, it still plays hosts to various cultural events including exhibitions (the works of Chinese architect Zhang Ke were being exhibited at the time of the shoot). The vibe: A gloomy day was forecasted but the weather eventually cleared up allowing the crew to eat lunch al fresco. Creative director Ezra Petronio kept everyone in good spirits with his playlist of 1970s and 1980s tunes including a French classic by Partenaire Particulier (turns out that one of the original band members is related to one of the crew!) The ASH Girl: Camille Rowe arrived in head-to-toe black and sung along to favourites such as California Dreaming throughout the day. When not posing in front of the lens, she kept asking about everyone’s shoes. The team: New faces this season include fashion and celebrity photographer Fred Meylan, who worked alongside long-term ASH co-collaborators Petronio and renowned stylist Camille Bidault-Waddington. Don’t forget to check out our behind-the-scenes video on ASH.com.

#coolgirls This group of ASH girls embody both style and substance making them ones to watch

Audrey Lombard It’s true that French women have a certain je ne sais quoi about them when it comes to their personal style, and digital influencer Audrey Lombard is no exception. She started her successful blog in 2006 and still attracts a large following thanks to her simple, no-fuss look which often consists of a great pair of jeans and sneakers (fans can buy everything she wears at her online boutique). Her full-time job as a veterinarian keeps her style approachable and firmly rooted in the real world. @audreylombard

Gina Ybarra Mexican-born Gina Ybarra started her own blog Hunt for Styles in 2014 featuring her vintage finds while showcasing her personal style which combines casual essentials with investment pieces. Although her Instagram feed is picture perfect, she inspires women to embrace their body shape and choose clothes that make them feel comfortable. With her down-to-earth attitude and versatile look, she is the perfect role model for the next generation of millennials. @huntforstyles

Mary Lawless Lee Mary Lawless Lee proves that less is always more when it comes to fashion and is known for her edgy yet minimalist style. The Nashville resident and qualified nurse started her blog Happily Grey in 2012 as a side project, but has since dedicated herself to it fulltime. She now boasts a following in the millions and covers topics beyond fashion including lifestyle, travel, fitness and even photography. She is also a successful entrepreneur and even dabbled with her own fashion line. @happilygrey

MUSE

Jacqueline Mikuta When it comes to photography Jacqueline Mikuta knows her stuff. The Swedish blogger studied photography, advertising and art direction, giving her a strong advantage when she launched her Mikuta blog in 2015. Her photography style is known for its moody, muted colours and lends itself perfectly to her posts which showcase her eclectic fashion sense in exotic locations around the world. Her success has also led to her to start a flourishing career as a fashion photographer. @mikutas

Rebecca Laurey Amsterdam-based Rebecca Laurey started her blog Raspberry & Rouge as a creative outlet while she was working in fashion marketing. Now rebranded as Rebecca Laurey, the carefully curated website documents her hip personal style which she describes as a mix between Scandinavian minimalism and California cool, in addition to personal pursuits such as her travels. Thanks to her effortless style, she has been featured in print and online by the likes of Vogue and Vanity Fair. @rebeccalaurey

Sonya Esman Sonya Esman isn’t actually a fashion blogger, although she could easily pass as one. The media maven started out making beauty videos on YouTube when she was just 11-years-old in hopes of becoming an actress. She eventually made her mark as a style vlogger sharing her experiences and favourite fashion and beauty finds (she has almost two million followers on Instagram). Since then she has carved a successful career in the acting and modelling worlds. @sonyaesman

Natasha Liu Bordizzo Italian-Chinese actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo initially studied to become a lawyer before she was discovered at a train station and began her acting career. The Sydney-based beauty is a martial arts expert (she cites Michelle Yeoh as her mentor) and has starred in blockbusters such as The Greatest Showman, although it’s her chameleon-like style that continues to make headlines. Ranging from funky and punk rock to cool and sporty, her sneaker collection is worth a look alone. @natashaliubordizzo

street meet Streetwear may have started among subcultures,

but it’s the millennials that are bringing the look to the next generation Streetwear was once considered the dominion of sub-cultures and was solely reserved for those that populated the worlds that inspired it, be it sports or music. Fast forward to today, and this once niche category has infiltrated mainstream fashion thanks to the rise of casual and active wear. Streetwear in 2018 is more approachable than ever with countless of brands, ranging from high street to luxury, churning out their own looks and collections inspired by the trend. While designers like Virgil Abloh are dictating the look among exclusive fashion circles, those living in the real

PAGE 19

world are taking to social media to explore this fashion movement in more depth. Instead of flipping through the pages of Vogue to learn how to style their new kicks, they are following high profile influencers for inspiration. So why have the new generation gravitated to streetwear so quickly and easily? After years of being exposed to big luxury brands and conglomerates, millennials are craving something new and different. Streetwear’s more authentic origins and the no-fuss attitude that comes with it, are a breath of fresh air.

CULTURE

Then it’s the look itself. Streetwear staples are extremely versatile and wearable and include relaxed separates such as hoodies, graphic tees and in-your-face sneakers. Many are emblazoned with logos transforming them into a bold fashion statement that is perfect for a selfie-obsessed culture that loves to share everything on social media. The Hadid sisters, Rihanna, Kylie Jenner and Jaden Smith, are just a few among this growing community that have embraced streetwear and made it a permanent part of their wardrobe. Interestingly, many of them are too young to remember the rise of original streetwear brands such as Stussy, which was born out of the skating culture in California in the early 1980s. As such, they approach the trend from a fresh perspective and create looks that are also very much influenced by their personal style and preferences. All the rules are thrown out the window, as they combine high-end with high street for a style that is modern and cool.

Gigi Hadid

although designer brands are extremely popular and make even more of a statement when they are dressed down with a pair of shorts and XL hoodie, or army jacket thrown on top. The Jenner sisters are also big proponents of denim when it comes to their streetwear. The denim should look as “raw” as possible, which means light washes with details such as fading and distressing. Last but not least, every streetwear style star needs a great pair of sweats. Once considered the very antithesis of style, this newfound status symbol doesn’t need to be fancy – plain cotton will do. It’s all about how you wear it. For inspiration look no further than Rihanna, who matches hers with bodysuits and cropped tops. Kylie Jenner

Although each one has their own spin on the trend, there are certain streetwear staples that continually pop up on every Instagram feed. Top of the list is a pair of Dad-inspired sneakers from the 1990s. The modern iterations they are choosing however are much bolder with futuristic details, supersized chunky soles and a bright colour palette – think primary shades of red, yellow and blue. Because they take centre stage, influencers like model Bella Hadid prefer to style them with oversized denim and a simple T-shirt. Speaking of which, the more graphic and logo-covered the T-shirt is, the better. Vintage tees have an added cool factor,

Essential Oil Salt Pipe Inhaler by Living Libations; Reishi Mushroom from Sun Potion which I add to my water or tea, and is amazing for immunity; and a Rosewater colloidal silver hydrosol which I make with Sun Potion’s Solar Rose Water and Sovereign Silver. It’s super protective and refreshing on long flights! What is your must-have health essential? My friend Tristan — he always knows where to find the best food and puts Frankincense essential oil in my water. What is your most treasured possession? My friends and family.

What’s your best travel tip for exploring a new city? Getting lost. But always make sure you have a map, phone and charger!

What’s your favourite album of all time? There are so many, but right now I am super obsessed with my friend Rhye’s new album Blood. It gets better each time I listen to it. What inspires you? Love. How do you relax? Sex and when that is not possible, long baths infused with essential oils, taken while listening to books on tape. What’s your favourite city? Kyoto. I love everything about it, from the beauty, nature, design and food to the people, art and history. Where do you go to escape? I can’t tell you because when I go, I like to disappear completely. It is a top-secret escape! What’s next on your travel list? Portugal. I can’t wait as it’s my first trip.

Where’s next on your bucket list? Travelling to Lamu Islands, Kenya with my friend Shiva. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given? To always breathe.
