OUR STORY
then & now Our evolving village...
Nundah has developed so significantly over the last 10 years, that it would be easy to forget how far we’ve come. We began as a village, became a bypassed suburb, and now we’re still growing as the bustling community hub we’ve come to love. Let’s remember where we’ve been... The corner of Station Rd and Aspinall Street was once home to Food For Less, before Woolworths arrived in 2007, encouraging further developing in the area. This same corner is now home to well-known smoothie and juice bar, Coco Bliss; the paleo cafe, Primal Pantry; and King of Cakes, the German patisserie. Do you remember the old Royal English Hotel? Once an interesting yellow colour, it’s been renovated with a fresh, white exterior and reopened as The Royal, serving up great Italian fare. In the evening, the village buzzes, with plenty of the local residents checking out all the options for wining and dining. Nundah has become a popular hub, not only for
then 2002
locals but also the wider community as everything is in the one place. Our local train station gives us quick access to the CBD - and brings us a weekly farmer’s market in the carpark. In Siam Sensations, Nundah has one of the best Thai restaurants on the northside - and nearby, Sushi Edo, a state-of-the-art restaurant where you order using an iPad. And through our redevelopment, we’ve managed to keep many green, public spaces. In October, Nundah State School will celebrate 150 years, and past pupils will return to Nundah. We’re sure they’ll enjoy comparing today’s Nundah with the village of their childhood memories. Nundah has come a long way, with abundant options for coffee, great food and drink, all in a village with history and texture. Nundah continues to grow with the assistance of development and local businesses – shaping the village atmosphere and fostering community spirit.

Store with Soul Supports Local Designers A short distance from Nundah Village, there’s a creative haven that embraces the community and supports local hand-crafters. ideology is a collaborative creative space by Erin Rizzo, decked out with recycled timber benches and wall hangings made by her husband. Erin had always been in the hospitality and airline industry but after renovating a few small properties, she enjoyed working on interior decorative detail and colour schemes. Erin says that ideology started off as retail space selling pre-loved clothing where crafters could rent space in-store to showcase their products. “As the business became better known and supported, I applied to wholesale homeware
and fashion agencies to diversify our products in store. Just over two years on, we have a loyal following.” “I started ideology based on a vision of bringing the community together in a space that offers a great energy and vibe with quality products at reasonable prices.”
ideology stocks locally hand-created artisan delights, Brisbane and Australian fashion labels, homewares and wellrecognised gift product lines. To further support local artists, ideology hosts the Banyo Twilight Artisan Markets three times a year, showcasing boutique stalls with

hand-made creations ranging from pottery to locally made honey. For Erin, the reality of achieving her dream with ideology only kicked in at her most recent market in March. “For a brief moment that evening, I stopped and took in the energy surrounding me. I felt an overwhelming wave of emotions that we finally did it; we built it, and the people have come!” Erin is thankful for the support and motivation that she has received from her mother, Norma, her husband, Christian and his family in taking ideology from a simple idea to a thriving community hub.

Accounting Tips for Business Owners 1. Keep it separate Have a dedicated business bank account and/or credit card separate to your personal accounts. Things get complicated fast, so the more separate it is the easier it is to keep track. 2. K eep it clean Establish and maintain a simple accounting system. This can be manual or computer-based. It depends on the size of the business, volume of transactions and obviously your computer skills. 3. Call in a Pro An intimate knowledge of business management as well as tax laws will save you money almost every time. It is tempting to try and save a buck and do it yourself, but it’s almost never more cost efficient in the end. 4. Pencil it in Set aside about 1 hour every week to organize your finances and keep your accounting records up to date and accurate. 5. Finally, don’t forget to get paid This one seems pretty obvious, but you would be shocked at how many small business owners don’t properly track invoices and customer payments. If you’re not keeping proper records that you can make sense of at a glance, it could be months before you realize you have outstanding invoices. Is Your Bedroom Legal? It’s not breaking the law to use a bedroom under a house if it’s not the correct height, however it is illegal to promote that room as a bedroom when selling. Current building regulations in Nundah state that habitable bedrooms and living areas should be a minimum 2.4m, while kitchens and bathrooms can be 2.1m. Thousands of homes across Queensland are using rooms as bedrooms that are below this required limit, which becomes an issue when selling.
Good news is some of these non-conforming rooms can be made legal with the help of a building certifier & fire engineer if they meet safety, ventilation, water proofing and structural slab standards. This means that these once ‘illegal rooms’ can be promoted when selling…having additional bedrooms and living areas can improve the potential value and subsequent sale price by potentially thousands of dollars. Reverse your tooth decay!
Saving your kids’ education
Did you know you can reverse decay in your teeth? Your saliva has minerals in it to neutralise the acid attack and repair the damaged tooth. Early decay may not always need the drill! There are four basic rules to stop bacterial acids destroying your teeth:
It can be daunting when you consider how much the education of your children could cost, so starting to save now is a wise move. Some investments, such as bank accounts, can be held in the child’s name, whilst shares and managed funds can be purchased by an adult acting ‘as trustee for’ the child. Either way earnings will usually be taxed at child rates if an adult has provided the funds and the investment is treated like it’s the child’s money. It’s important, however, to ensure the investment doesn’t earn over the $416 tax free threshold as tax rates are high if income exceeds this rate For some low income earners it might be best to hold the investment in your own name, or if you’re a higher income earner it could be beneficial to take out an investment bond.
Clean your teeth often enough - at least twice a day – night time is the most important so that your saliva can spend a long time while you sleep repairing the damage.
lean them well enough – brush for 2 minutes and floss every night C - the majority of fillings I do every day are in between the teeth in flossing areas and these are all preventable
Reduce the amount of sugar - more healthy foods like cheese - less
sticky sugars like toffees. Remember that one can of soft drink has up to 10 teaspoons of sugar and has acid as well.
Last but not least it is essential to have regular dental checks, when we can assess and maintain your existing work, as well as preventing any future problems.

New practice - KLM Solicitors - opens in Nundah Village Kelli Martin is a mother, partner and young professional who lives, shops, trains and works locally, after recently opening KLM Solicitors in the heart of Nundah. Have you always been passionate about criminal and family law? Yes, since I started nearly 10 years ago. I love working with people. I love helping people. Criminal and family law are all about those things. If I can make one person’s life just a little bit easier in their darkest days, then I am doing my job and that makes me happy. What has been your career highlight? Opening KLM Solicitors in Nundah! Seriously, it has been a long time coming for me and it makes me insanely happy to be working in my local village and beginning to fulfil my dreams this close to home. What separates KLM Solicitors from other solicitors? Me and my team! My clients have always said that they love my personal approach. I try to be accessible to my clients when they need me and I think that makes me stand out from others. How would you describe your work ethic? I’ve worked hard to get to where I am and I never had anything handed to me, so I think that has given me a strong work ethic. If you want something bad
enough and you love what you do, then it is a lot easier. It becomes more than work; it becomes your passion.
Kelli Martin - Principal
How have you gone above and beyond in your job? I regularly help my younger clients get themselves back on the right track. Whether it is helping them get back into education or with counselling, I try and set them up to help themselves in the future. What do you love most about your job? Everything! I’d have to say that finding something that you love to do every day of your life is probably the most rewarding thing ever! KLM Solicitors offer a wide range of funding options across the board and are on the Legal Aid Queensland preferred supplier panel.

Nundah Welcomes Australian of the Year On Sunday the 22nd of March PandaPearls held their famous Sidewalk Sunday with a special appearance by Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty. Sidewalk Sunday is a collaboration of market stalls, antiques and raffles in the name of raising community spirit and money for charity. Amanda Stein, founder of PandaPearls, said that Rosie had heard that the upcoming Sidewalk Sunday was raising money for her charity ‘The Luke Batty Foundation’ and The Lady Musgrave Trust, and she wanted to come and say thank you. “We’re so proud of Rosie and her brave stance on ending domestic violence in all its forms,” Amanda said.
Rosie Batty gave a voice to thousands of victims of domestic violence by speaking out after her 11-year-old son’s murder by his father. Rosie’s story helped many Australians to recognise that domestic violence can happen to anyone and she continues to speak out as a family violence campaigner.
The Lady Musgrave Trust, established by Jeannie Lucinda Musgrave, reflects Rosie’s call for change and is celebrating 130 years in 2015. The trust provides accommodation and safe shelter for young women from abusive backgrounds and gives their families a fresh start on life. Amanda said properties are being purpose-built right now in Nundah financed by the Trust, who receive no government support. “We’re proud to say that over $2000 was raised for the Luke Batty Foundation and Lady Musgrave Trust, considering the weather,” she said. “Charity starts at home and we are so proud of Nundah, our trooper stall-holders, and everyone who just got on with the job.” The celebration continues for PandaPearls, who have reached their 10-year anniversary in Nundah Village. Come and see what all the fuss is about and get in on the community spirit! PandaPearls | 99 Buckland Rd, Nundah Ph. 3256 8418

Most people could have more in their superannuation if they made better decisions now. Every working Australian needs a super strategy.
A ‘super strategy’
Nundah
Most people could have more in their superannuation if they made better decisions now. Every working Australian needs a super strategy. Here are some ideas:
• Advice: a good financial planner doesn’t just ensure your money is in the right investment options for your life stage and goals, they also find a way to put in more contributions and make tax-effective choices.
• Salary sacrifice: top-up your super contributions and get more money working for you. If your employer pays extra contributions from pre-tax dollars straight into your super fund (up to your ‘cap’), you are only taxed at 15 per cent.
• Costs: if you’re paying more than 1 per cent per year in fund management fees, you should ask why. There are super funds where you pay around 0.7 per cent management fee; if you’re paying 1.7 per cent, you’re losing 1 per cent per year that you didn’t have to lose.
• Options: your weighting between defensive (cash, fixed interest), growth (equities, property), and balanced options should be calculated according to your risk profile, goals and life stage. Typically, young people shouldn’t be in cash, and those about to retire shouldn’t have all their money in equities.
• Change: avoid changing your options depending on fund performance as they’re historical rankings. Invest in the market, not the fund.
• Insurance: take a closer look at paying for life insurance. Premiums are rising, eroding the cost advantage. Remember, you can create your own life policy with a retail insurer and instruct your super fund to pay the premium – it’s called a ‘rollover’ and gives you more control.
• Self-managed: self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs) promise more

NUNDAH
control over assets and a chance to buy investment property. But you’ll also have an annual compliance burden with the ATO and professional fees to pay. Consider a wrap account which allows you to actively manage shares, managed funds, EFTs, term deposits and index funds at a low management fee.
• Longevity: if you’re a woman who retires at 65, you might have to fund another 25 years of living. At a time when you want to revert to defensive cash investments, you should also leave some money in growth assets. Start thinking about a super strategy today. You may thank yourself in the years to come. Contact Casey on 0401 314 261 or contact Yellow Brick Road Nundah on (07) 3172 5091 to develop your super strategy. by Casey Jarrett | Financial Planner |

Ruby Room Shines at Awards Boutique hairdressing salon The Ruby Room has been awarded ‘The Best State Salon Business of the Year’ at the Australian Hair Industry Awards (AHIA) after being a finalist in two categories. The winners of the second AHIAs were announced on March 15 at a gala ceremony held in the Boulevard Ballroom at the Brisbane Convention Centre. Winners from all over Australia were rewarded for outstanding excellence in their field across all aspects of business services, as voted on by media, industry and business professionals. Manager and Creative Director of The Ruby Room, Laura MacLeod, said she couldn’t believe it when it was announced her salon won.
“Four years ago I opened the salon with myself and one apprentice, and here we are now with 14 staff and a trophy that says I own the best hairdressing salon in QLD,” Laura says. “In the last 18 months, I have had to really step back from the salon after having two children only 14 months apart.
The team have not only continued running the salon, but made it even more of a success.” “I’m also very thankful to our clients for their continued support. There are many salons in Brisbane so I truly appreciate that they trust us with their hair.” “Nundah Village has really grown since we opened in 2010 and we have grown with it.” Linda Woodhead, creator of the awards, said that the AHIAs send a clear message that the hair industry is just as passionate about good business as they are about amazing creative talent. “All of the entrants, finalists and winners, should be congratulated on their commitment to seek recognition by their peers, the industry, and their clients for their business skills and success,” she said. 2015 is a big year for The Ruby Room, with Laura also winning QLD Hairdresser of the Year at the Australian Fashion Awards in Sydney at the end of March. The Story Behind the Nundah Farmers Markets Stalls Words by Fiona Heyman
Meet the stallholders who each have a unique story to tell, as they provide you with the best fresh produce every week. James from Northside Artisan Bakers & Co makes a real French baguette that takes a minimum 48 hours to bake and is a rare find in Australia. Maria, owner of The Olive Bar, started her business to give her daughters an opportunity to learn English and interact with the community through a passion for olives. Helen from Helen’s Produce goes out of her way to provide customers with unique farm fresh produce such as fenugreek. Lindsay was pleased to discover that Nundah locals loved small apples and saw this as an opportunity to support a farmer called Frank, whose apples were too small for supermarkets. Farmer Bill has been in the agricultural industry for over 70 years and says he isn’t ready for retirement after having to replant everything after Cyclone Marcia in February. Mr Snippets Barber and Espresso Childhood mates Geordie and Paul are two laid-back guys who decided to combine their skills and open up Mr Snippets Barber and Espresso in Clayfield. Paul says that they couldn’t be more humbled by the positive response from locals and Geordie’s dedicated clients since opening their doors in November last year. “We aren’t just a ‘chop shop’ – we’re a hang-out for any type of man who wants to escape his life for a little while and talk smack with two weirdos. Geordie has been a barber for over 10 years, having managed both hairdressers and barbershops in the past, while Paul has been getting creative with the coffee machine for nearly five years. Geordie says that there’s a world of difference between hairdressing and the barber world, which has recently seen a comeback in the past 12 months. “We are in a day and age where so much pressure is put on us every day with work, relationships and just life. “Guys tell things to their barber that they would never tell anyone else – considering they trust me to wield a blade over their neck and face.” “Barber shops are a man’s haven - all the other stuff doesn’t matter for an hour while they are here.”
As well as providing a killer cut and coffee, the Mr Snippets men are also keen musicians who encourage you to come in and have a jam, a couple of cold brews, play some FIFA and chill out after work. Paul said that Mr Snippets is a traditional-style barbershop with walk-ins preferable but appointments can be made if you want Geordie behind the blade. Self-Taught Musician Turns Poetry into Song Acoustic singer-songwriter Louise Winter has always had a great voice, but five years ago, she combined her skills in writing, vocals and acoustic guitar to take her music to a new level. Prior to composing music, Louise wrote poetry, which encouraged her to start writing music to her lyrics. Louise says that, although she started learning guitar around the same time, it took three years to really understand the musical instrument and combine all the elements.
“I’ve been singing as long as I’ve been walking; I started to sing professionally at the age of 18,” Louise says. “I’m self-taught, but have picked up things from other musicians along the way.” Louise says that easy-listening artists like Bonnie Raitt, Crowded House and Missy Higgins influence her work. Although Louise lives in Tarragindi, she can often be found playing locally at Kunara Organic Café’s Saturday Blues and Roots Sessions and All Inn Brewing Co at Banyo. Hendra Pony Club Hendra Pony Club has been a local feature for 56 years. They’ve been in their current location for the last 25 years. President of Hendra Pony Club, Peter Tornabene, said that Nundah is one of the last remaining inner-city pony clubs. “The location has to be the biggest plus for me, as it’s in between home and work which allows my son to ride with his friends after school.” Peter said that pony club is a great start for children as young as three, where they can learn how to care for and attend to horses each day. “Our aim is to help the kids learn to ride, and to enjoy their horses, while learning horsemanship skills.” he said.
Made with love in Nundah.
Hendra Pony Club has won number one club in zone 1 for two years and received a ‘Get in the Game’ grant for nearly $62k for sports lighting in their jumping arena. Peter says that one of the best things about pony club is the opportunity to interact with other horse-minded families, especially when the kids attend rides and comp days. “The kids make friends from all over the state from comp and training days even though some they only see once a year,” he said. On May 3, Hendra Pony Club will be hosting ‘The Teams Sporting Challenge’, where riders from all over join up in teams of 4 to compete against
other teams. Peter says that this event usually attracts more than 80 horses and riders, and is a great spectacle for onlookers. Everyone is welcome to attend. “We also have a muster once a month for all the kids who aren’t out competing or are still learning to catch up with the club and gain valuable lessons from our instructors,” he said. The club recommends coming along to a muster and introducing yourself to the instructors and riders before joining or buying a horse as to get a feel for the club, horses and their care. A Permanent Passion for the Tattoo Industry Owner of Warts Ink Tattoo Anthony ‘Wart’ Keenan had always thought he would pursue a career in fitness, but an overarching interest in art and a knack for drawing opened a new door. Anthony was lucky to come in contact with an artist who had been tattooing for quite some time, and who saw a lot of potential in his artwork. “He encouraged my choice of pursuing art by giving me some very useful tips and guidance that saw my art come along in leaps and bounds,” Anthony said. “I started tattooing my close family under his supervision in the studio, which ignited a love for tattooing and everything involved with the industry.” Two years later, Anthony was offered a permanent position at a local tattoo studio, which helped build a great clientele base and enhance his skills before moving onto a new location. “This provided a huge learning experience and opened a massive door for me to move to Nundah, where I have been based for over four years now,” he said. With a career approaching the 10-year mark, Anthony says that his passion for the industry is growing stronger as he meets more people and takes on a wide variety of tattoos for his clients. “The most enjoyable part of being a tattoo artist is that you are never doing the same thing, because no-one has the same skin, humour or even the same vibe. “If you have a very open mind and work with your clients in a creative manner then you can create great pieces of art that people will be proud of forever.” Warts Ink | 1/1192 Sandgate Rd, Nundah | Ph. 07 3266 6065 Facebook.com/WartsInkTattoo.com.au

Resilience: a process of the continuing growth and articulation of one’s capacities, knowledge and insight derived through meeting the challenges of our world. Often it can feel insurmountable to feel resilient in our ever-evolving age of globalisation, with its saturation of obsolescent goods, services and education. I am in awe of my grandparents’ generation and their acquired resilience. My grandfather, after returning from the Second World War, needed a house to start a new family with my grandmother. He bought a book on how to build a house, borrowed some tools from friends, acquired lumber from the trees in his family’s property in Childers, and proceeded to build his own house. My grandmother received old clothes from the local church, and with her sewing machine, transformed them into garments for my grandfather and their children. I, on the other hand, live in fear of my microwave breaking, or a national embargo on the importation of coffee – which would cripple my ability to function in my day-to-day life.
Currently the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre’s sewing group is undertaking a project of creating beautiful, unique and durable matting from materials otherwise to be thrown out. Rag rug-making involves weaving scraps of old material together to create a rug. Whether you would like to increase your skills in upcycling old materials, create a feature piece for your house with your own two hands, meet some fellow crafting enthusiasts in your neighbourhood, or want to give a second life to worn-out material – you are most welcome to join us at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Sewing group. Happy resilience-building. Its not a house, but it’s a start.

The Nundah Activity Centre (NAC) was lucky to secure funding from the BCC Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund to install two iDesks in the main foyer of the centre. NAC General Manager Don Rudd and Board Member Samantha Cowley were pleased to announce the new and exciting iDesk project, holding a breakfast launch on the 20th of March. The iDesk system provides NAC’s 450 members with free internet access and has led to the establishment of IT training sessions with an IT Club and IT Buddy Service. The new tablet and computer education program for seniors empowers those aged over 60 to get involved with the growing online world. Current research shows that by enabling an older person’s inclusion in the digital economy, their access to information and engagement in society is enhanced, and their mental health improves, which strengthens the economy as a whole. The iDesk Project is one of a number of projects being undertaken by NAC to bring technology into the everyday life of an Older Australian. To participate in IT training sessions or join the IT Buddy Service, please contact Samantha on sam@nac.org.au.
