New Café is a Family Affair At Como Espresso, Nundah’s newest café and patisserie, you’ll be welcomed by all four family members of the Little family – Andrew, Michelle, Daniel and Lachlan. About 18 months ago, Andrew was looking for a new direction after 30 years of working with the government. The family decided to team up and open a cafe. Michelle Little says that their eldest son, Daniel, was the driving force behind the project, thanks to his knowledge and experience within the hospitality industry. “Over a year ago, we started looking for a café that would tick all the boxes.
“We immediately fell in love with this site – its location, size, the Italian feel, outdoor seating and its red interior. “Over the past few years, Nundah has experienced a surge in new development and we wanted to be a part of this thriving community.” Como Espresso offers a wide selection of delicious cakes and patisseries from Brisbane’s best local suppliers, as well as light breakfasts, savoury delights, rolls and more. Michelle says that the family wants to provide a relaxing atmosphere with great customer service, high-quality food and beverages, great music and free Wi-Fi.
Como Espresso is a place where you can unwind and catch up with friends, enjoy a Toby’s Estate coffee, and indulge in something decadent from the cake cabinet. In the coming months, Como Espresso is hoping to start a high-tea menu on weekends and will be introducing a ‘flip for free’ special for set days during the week. The Joys of Good Vision As a high-school student, Nicole Stimson did a week of work experience at an optometrist – and she was hooked. Nicole is now the new owner of Eyecare Plus Nundah and has more than 25 years of optometry behind her. Nicole says that she has always dreamed of owning her own independent optometrist in the local area. “I live in this area, and I know it well. I love seeing the vibrancy and change that is happening to my old stomping ground.” Nicole says that optometry is a unique profession that combines professional eye health and vision checks along with the retail side of beautiful eyewear and contact lenses. “The best part of the job is seeing the change you can make to a person’s life by giving them clear, comfortable vision.”
“Many patients are surprised how clear their vision can be when we can show them the difference – whether it’s for distance or looking at a computer screen.” Nicole says regular eye and vision checks are vitally important, but people often take eye health for granted. “Just as we get our teeth regularly checked, we need to do the same thing for our eyes and vision. “For children, so much of their learning is done via their visual system, so we recommend the first vision check at the age of 3 to 4 years, and then at least every two years after that.” Nicole and her team, Irene and Pamela, look forward to helping Nundah locals with all their eye care and eyewear needs. You can count on professional friendly service and a smile! Eyecare Plus Nundah 1190 Sandgate Rd Nundah QLD 4012 Ph: (07) 3266 6444 to make an appointment Words by Fiona Heyman
National Indoor Cricket Championships Held Locally
Australia’s dominance as indoor cricket champions was put to the test at Action Indoor Sports Toombul recently. Our local sports venue hosted the Australian Junior Championship as part of the 2015 National Indoor Cricket Championships in July. The Junior Championships showcased the skills of more than 350 young indoor cricket competitors from around Australia, over more than 50 matches. Ninety-six boys and girls from this tournament were selected to represent Australia in the World Junior Series, which will be held in late September. Internationally, Australia has a worldwide reputation as ‘the team to beat’ in indoor cricket – Australia’s 19-and-under boys’ and girls’ teams are undefeated in the World Cup Series to date. We’ve also won every men’s and women’s senior World Cup since the tournaments were established. Indoor cricket is a very popular format of the game, currently boasting 165,000 participants nationally. Many of Australia’s greatest cricketers played indoor cricket as part of their career development. Action Indoor Sports Toombul has 5 indoor courts that can be easily converted to accommodate a variety of sports such as double-court soccer. Indoor Netball offers mixed, women’s and men’s competitions. These are usually played on a Monday and Thursday night from 6pm. About to Lose Your Licence?
How Will ‘Baby Boomers’
Need to Apply for a Work Licence?
Impact the Property Market?
What is a work licence? A work licence is a licence that allows you to continue driving, provided that it is for work purposes, even though you are suspended or disqualified from driving. Am I eligible? You may be eligible if you meet the following criteria: 1 Y ou have been charged with drink driving offence, where the reading was less than 0.15 percent;
2 At the time of the offence you held an open Qld Drivers Licence, and were not driving for work purposes; 3 You are going to plead guilty and are going to lose your licence; 4 You have not been found guilty of a similar offence in the last five years; 5 and you need your driver’s licence to continue working. What you need to do? 1 Apply to the Court before a disqualification is recorded; 2 You must show that you are a ‘fit and proper person’; and 3 You must show that without your licence you will lose your job or income. If you meet the above criteria and need help, call us on 07 3733 0901. KLM Solicitors / 5A/1192 Sandgate Road, Nundah.
In coming years, the lifestyle choices of our Baby Boomers will have a ripple effect through-out the whole economy. Baby Boomers make up a significant 43% of the working population with approximately 2.3 million Australians currently aged between 53-68 heading towards retirement. The challenge for property investors is to ensure they make smart decisions and purchase properties that are popular for our changing demographic. Traditionally retirees downsize and opt for a quieter life; however, many Baby Boomers are starting to move closer to the city due to convenient transport and amenities, rather than the coasts and retirement villages in outer suburban areas. The design and layout of new property development needs to be reconsidered if it’s going to appeal to Baby Boomers. Smaller buildings or elevator access, split level or main bedroom plus living arrangements on the ground floor will increase enquiry. If you’re armed with insight into the Baby Boomers mentality and have awareness of their impact on the property market, investors will be uniquely positioned to meet a huge need in the market. Smash Your Social Media Targets If you want to stay in the friend zone with your followers, these handy tips will help you build your audience and more importantly keep them engaged. 1 Show, don’t tell A picture says a thousand words. This allows you to schedule posts at the right time. 3 Let’s talk Get clever with your captions and ask a question to create a conversation with your customer. Don’t be afraid to interact with likes and comments. 4 Keep it fresh Try mixing it up by sharing links, videos or better yet – run a competition. Skin Candy Spray Tanning Jodi Jones’ passion for makeup and tanning started at a very early age, inspired by a makeup loving mum who was always impeccably groomed and presented. This early fascination turned into a career and over the years, this passion has seen Jodi tan celebrities, models and had her whisked away for destination weddings.
Nundah Village is now home to Skin Candy, Jodi’s specialised spray tanning and beauty studio. It’s the salon of choice when brands like City Beach and Jet Pilot want to prepare their models for photo shoots. Jodi has conducted thousands of spray tans for editorial, fashion shoots and brides, and she’s created a specialised technique that she now trains other salons in. “I’ve been in the industry a long time and have worked hard to establish a reputation – and now I’m being requested for events,” Jodi says. Jodi says that spray tanning is the fastest, easiest and safest way to get that sun-kissed look. “Tanning is like makeup. The solution has to be perfectly selected for your skin type and then expertly applied and blended for flawless results.” “Exfoliated, well-hydrated skin lets the tan glide on smoothly. Once it’s developed, your tan will last longer if you moisturise daily and drink lots of water.”
Jodi loves having a job where she’s able to boost women’s confidence. “I feel extremely lucky that I get to make people look and feel amazing, while having fun and meeting great people in the process.” Skin Candy isn’t a traditional full-service salon, instead concentrating on feel-good services that use the latest on-trend techniques and products for the best results and benefits. Along with Skin Candy’s signature spray tan service, the salon also offers lash extensions, express facials, body sugaring and make-up applications. Jodi says that the Nundah Village Skin Candy is the first of many studios planned across Brisbane. Find the most glamorous, self-confident version of yourself at Skin Candy. 3 Chapel St, Nundah | Ph. 0488 826 633 www.skincandyspraytanning.com

The power of music enhancing children’s development When Nundah local Vicky Abad started taking her guitar to her daughter’s playgroup she recognised the opportunity for an early learning program based on the joy of music. Vicky is the Founder and Director of Boppin’ Babies, providing parents and their children with music early learning programs (MELP) that support the foundations for learning.
Making music engages all areas of the brain, especially when children are playing an instrument. Beat and rhythm help children to count and singing teaches them new words and sounds - skills that are the building blocks for literacy and numeracy. They’re also fun! “As music therapists and early childhood education specialists we understand the power of music,” Vicky says. “We run personalised, child-centred programs with all music played live. We believe children learn through making music with their bodies, voices and a range of beautiful instruments. “We don’t ‘teach music’, we scaffold music learning and child development through a fun and stimulating program that is engaging, educational and therapeutic.” Vicky says research has found that music education grows, hones and permanently improves neural networks like no other activity.

“This education begins at home with the parent, she said. “A music early learning program should focus on including the parent and empowering them to feel confident to use music in the home every day. “This is a core focus at Boppin’ Babies, and why we include parents in all our community programs, including the pre-prep groups.” Vicky is a Registered Music Therapist and a world-leading researcher and clinician in parent-child music therapy and music early learning. In addition to her music and music therapy qualifications, she holds a Masters Degree in Education and is currently completing her PhD in music early learning. Boppin’ Babies music early learning groups are held weekly at Chermside, Paddington, Morningside, Tarragindi, Wynnum and North Lakes. Sessions are 45 minutes long and all music is played live and centred around the children. The cost is $175 for a 10 week term. You can join any time during the term and casual spots are also available. Spaces are limited and bookings are essential, however families are very welcome to book a free trial to get a feel for how the groups run. A Splash of Colour for Nundah Train passengers and pedestrians are admiring the new, street art mural decorating Nundah Train Station as part of a beautification project. Dan Brock, Queensland Rail’s Arts Project Manager, designed the mural in conjunction with contemporary ‘G20 Pillar Project’ artist, Simon Degroot. Simon created an abstract representation of Nundah relying on drawings and photographs that Dan had taken of the area. Dan says that while the artwork may seem random, Simon’s sense of balance and colour is remarkable and very specific. “There aren’t many people who can get away with putting the colours ‘goblin green’ and ‘hot pink’ next to each other and somehow make it work.” Dan says that an important part of his job is community engagement and, as a Nundah local, he had wanted
to do something in the area for a long time. “We worked with kids at headspace Nundah to get a feel for what they wanted”.
“The vibe in Nundah is fantastic and I think it’s very well suited to quality contemporary street art. At Queensland Rail we are seeing a growing respect for what we do in creating opportunities for young people to have a realistic chance at pursuing a career in this industry.” Brisbane City Council (BCC) and Queensland Rail (QR) co-funded the Nundah Train Station artwork as part of the ‘City Colours’ project that will see more street art around Brisbane.

A Local Treasure Amanda Stein from Panda Pearls tells us why the world may be her oyster, but Nundah is her home.
Tell us about Sidewalk Sunday? It’s a community charity event held in the carpark adjoining Panda Pearls.
What do you love about Nundah? It’s ever evolving. There has been a change of the guard and it’s now a destinational shopping and eating experience.
The next Sidewalk Sunday is being held in conjunction with the annual Nundah Festival. We are supporting Women’s Legal Services who help Queensland women with domestic violence and family law issues.
Why did you choose Nundah to set up your business 10 years ago? The Village atmosphere reminds me of Newtown, Sydney meets St Kilda, Melbourne. With all the exciting changes to Nundah over the years it’s potential was obvious and the reason I invested here. What changes have you seen to the area? Nundah was actually the first free settlement in Brisbane and has changed dramatically! My beautiful shop was built in 1924 and was the original telephone exchange. The entire Village has moved into the 21st century with wonderful new retail shops and gourmet food outlets. Check out the new revamped Royal Hotel!
Until I had the privilege of meeting Rosie Batty at the last Sidewalk Sunday, I had no idea just how much an endemic problem this is. The charity event kicks off on Sunday 13 September from 8am. What is your favourite piece in store at the moment? The gorgeous pure silk opera swing coats and extensive shell collection. The jumbo Baroque pearls are magnificent too! 3 million Australians are living with depression or anxiety We all feel low or sad sometimes, but depression is more than that. It’s a serious illness that impacts on our physical and mental health. There’s a growing conversation about depression, but it can still be an isolating illness.
If you or someone you know has the following symptoms, they should seek help from their GP and a Psychologist: loss of energy and interest in things, low mood, feelings of hopelessness and low worth, thoughts of hurting themselves, changes in appetite and sleep patterns.
Get lost at the library Imagine being surrounded by adventure, romance and sci-fi without having to leave the room. Imagine nestling in the corner of the room and losing yourself in a world of literature. Imagine if you had access to a huge collection of books to suit every mood, interest and age group. Imagine turning pages as you research an assignment, and discovering surprising new ideas and facts on the way. This magical place exists right here in Nundah – welcome to your local library. It offers a huge range of books that you can take home and return at your leisure. And not only books – you can borrow DVDs and CDs too! There’s even an Xbox! Don’t you think it’s time for a trip to the library? The library is open Tuesday (10am – 6pm), Wednesday (1pm – 7pm), Thursday (10am – 5pm), Friday ( 10am – 5pm) and Saturday (9am – 1pm).
Anxiety is another common illness that affects many people. This may include panic attacks, phobias or distressing thoughts. The sufferer may find that they can’t stop worrying about things or they may have a sick feeling in their stomach that won’t go away. Others may become particularly anxious when interacting with other people. The good news is that depression and anxiety are treatable conditions. Carolyn Vickers is a Clinical Psychologist at Cadogan House Specialist Suites, Nundah. She specialises in treating depression and anxiety, as well as sleeping problems. Carolyn has over 15 years experience and is registered with the Psychology Board of Australia. She is also a member of the Australian Psychological Society.
