Cheers to the NeighBARhood! Whether you’re after a craft beer, a Spanish Rioja, or a classic Manhattan, The Village Social is sure to be your new favourite place to relax after work and meet up with friends. Trisha Park was inspired to open a bar after watching an episode of Australian Story, and along with Jono Walker – who has been a professional sailor overseas for the past four years – they signed the lease a week later in Nundah. The team recently visited New York to work with some ‘worldclass mixologists’, bringing back some unique cocktails for the drinks menu, which also includes more than 40 craft beers and an international selection of fine wines.

Inside The Village Social you’ll discover classic industrial décor – exposed brickwork, 1940s terrazzo floors, and recycled timber from the ‘20s. The décor sets up an atmospheric space, where you can relax and sample the food and drinks on offer. Share a tapas plate or charcuterie board while you listen to the local musicians and artists who are set to feature regularly at the bar – the playlist is sure to turn curious first-timers into Village regulars! Jono says that The Village Social is about bringing a little of the boutique bar scene from Melbourne and Sydney into the heart of Nundah. “Nundah has changed a lot over the last five years and we see it as the next ‘it’ suburb. We can’t wait to become a fixture in the local community!” The Village Social | 1188 Sandgate Rd, Nundah www.thevillagesocial.com.au Words by Fiona Heyman

A Family of Worldly Painters Worldly Painters is the story of three brothers whose father taught them to paint and combine their skills to run a fully qualified family-orientated painting business, based in Wavell Heights. Eddie Azzarello Snr arrived in Australia from Italy almost 50 years ago, and after completing his apprenticeship, set up his own painting company. Eddie Snr built a reputation as a friendly worker with great attention to detail, and he passed these qualities on to his sons Anthony, Robert and Eddie Jnr.

Today the painting trio are following in their father’s footsteps, with over 19 years of painting experience on new homes, units and repaints, completing jobs for builders such as Burbank Homes, McDonald Jones Homes and Allkind Building Services. Anthony says that painting with his brothers always produces quality workmanship, and they are satisfied knowing that they’re providing the best service. “We work closely as a team and aim for the same results, so we can always rely on each other.” The Worldly Painters team is often kept busy working on new homes being built in estates, and these opportunities have allowed them to expand their team and work across multiple projects. For excellence in painting, stain work and faux finishes on the northside, look no further than Worldly Painters.

Nundah Welcomes Two New Bars In October, Nundah’s nightlife will reach new heights, with the opening of quirky upstairs bar, Fitz + Potts and boutique laneway style bar, The Village Social. There’s been plenty of early buzz about the opening of these two new bars, with sneak peeks at Nundah Village Street Festival – an exciting sign of things to come! Fitz + Potts is located on the corner of Chapel Street and Sandgate Road, boasting an open-air rooftop beer garden and eclectic themed rooms with an exclusive view looking out over The Village. Cassie Potts, co-owner and ‘head beer taster’ of Fitz + Potts, said it was a ‘no-brainer’ to choose Nundah as the location for the bar, and they were delighted with the positive response from locals. Just a few steps away, The Village Social is supporting the local music scene with jazz, blues and local bands – enjoy the smooth sounds while you browse the extensive cocktail list. Amiga Park, co-owner of The Village Social said that, in the lead-up to opening, they have enjoyed the buzz around The Village when talking to residents, business owners, and curious passers-by. Nundah Village locals can look forward to two unique locations, perfect for socialising and catching up on what’s happening in the community. Keep your eye on our Facebook page for updates on the grand openings!

A Familiar Face in the Community

Nundah Library Gets an Upgrade

Mark Roemermann is no stranger to Nundah – living and working locally for over 20 years, and embracing life in the local community with his young family.

Brisbane Lifestyle Chairman Krista Adams said the Nundah Library was a vital community hub enjoyed by many, and would soon undergo a major upgrade.

Mark has been a major contributor to the community, and is a familiar face helping out at local schools and events. This year saw Mark as the town crier at the Nundah Festival for the fifth year in a row!

“The Nundah Library is a popular and vibrant space, providing a safe and engaging environment for all ages, and that’s why the Lord Mayor has committed $1.5 million for its revitalisation,” Cr Adams said.

As an active member of Nundah District Development Association (NDDA), Mark involves himself with the community, its events and its causes, to ensure his family, neighbours, clients and fellow Nundah District residents have a voice about what’s going on in our city and suburbs. Mark Roemermann @realty is Mark’s new venture. Old-fashioned personalised real service is at the heart of his very modern, forward-thinking, property business. Dedication and commitment to helping others drives Mark in his service to the community and in business. We doubt you know of any other local estate agent prepared to give so much time or personal effort to improving our community. As a sign of Mark’s willingness to give, he presents plenty of free information, a bit of light-hearted fun, and even activities for the younger members of your family on his new website – www.markroemermann.com.au. If you’re planning to move soon you’ll want to use his handy checklists or read his free eBook, “120 Points On How To Sell Your House For MORE”.

To contact Mark to discuss your real estate needs, call 0413 877 230 or via email markroemermann@atrealty.com.au

“Our libraries have transformed over the years, and are no longer just a place for book-lovers. Now they’re community facilities with a range of entertainment and educational materials catering to a wide range of ages and interests. “They’re also a popular spot for community events and National Childrens’ Book Week is one of the biggest events on the library calendar. “It’s aim is to spark an interest in reading and writing, and children and families across Brisbane took part in the National event, expressing their creativity by taking part in a range of activities, including arts and crafts and reading clubs. “Nundah Library is also one of the contenders vying for the Muir Shield, which is awarded to the Brisbane Library with the best community display as part of Book Week celebrations.” Nundah Library | 1 Bage St, Nundah (access via Primrose Lane) Ph. 3407 8701

Hidden Talent Given a Chance

More Than a Local Cricket Club Toombul District Cricket Club (TDCC) has a great deal of respect for past members and the century-old history that has helped shape the Club today. TDCC has been batting since 1882, merging with Nundah Cricket Club in 1897. The Oxenham Park complex and ovals are named after influential members, like Errold La Frantz who was an active player, commentator and administrator who helped establish junior cricket in Brisbane. This season TDCC was able to fully honour the legacy of past players thanks to Life Member, Andrew Knight. Mr Knight completed a full listing of the 612 players who have represented the club in First Grade since the official competition began. TDCC Secretary, Andrew Oldham, says that the club holds many great memories, like summers playing cricket with a bunch of friends, coaching 4-year-olds on how to bowl on Friday night, and then watching international players on the same field hours later. “Along with my older brother, David, the Club President, we have had a strong vision for the Club and have a like-minded committee that continues to support the development of Oxenham Park. “It’s our turn to carry forward the legacy of those who have run the club before us, and hopefully leave it in a better place for the next generation.” Eleven TDCC players have represented Australia in test cricket, including famous names like Jeff Thomson. The club also boasts some rising stars! TDCC membership is open to playing and non-playing members. The junior division accepts Milo ‘In2Cricketers’ from the age of 4, and seniors field an Over 40s side. Toombul District Cricket Club | Cnr. Emdadaul Haque grew up in Bangladesh without electricity or ‘play time’ at school but, he’s learned a lot since moving to Australia – and now Em is surprising his new community with his AFL talents. Until recently, Em had never seen or heard of AFL. He played his first game of AFL for the Mayne Tigers at Oxenham Park this year in the Under-12 division, and umpires and spectators were impressed with his skill.

Out of 250 players, Em was one of four children from across Brisbane shortlisted for Best and Fairest, and was announced runner-up in his division. Anthony Quin, President of the Mayne Tigers JAFC, said that, although Em only recently started playing AFL, he is a particularly gifted player. “Emdadaul is a fine young man and he’s an asset to our club. He’s made loads of friends, and we look forward to having him in the club for many years to come.” Emdadaul attends Northgate State School and his Principal, Carol Scriven, agreed that this was a wonderful feat for a novice AFL player. “Emdadaul is the loveliest boy, and most deserving of his accolades in AFL and more.” Em spoke at assembly on Harmony Day about how different life was before coming to Australia. On a day that celebrates cultural diversity, Em said that his family are so thankful to now call Australia home. Mrs Scriven said that Em is an excellent ambassador for his family and a fine representative of Northgate State School and the school’s values. “We look forward to following Em’s journey and believe he will achieve great things.” Em plans to keep practicing his AFL and has dreams of becoming a professional football player one day. During this time, staff will be relocated to demountable offices in the Centre’s car park. Rotary Raises $10,000 for Hummingbird House The Late Shift Big Band had 150 people dancing and grooving to the smooth sounds of jazz, all in the name of seriously ill kids. The Rotary Club of Nundah organised the Jazz Evening at Aspley State School to raise money for Hummingbird House, a children’s hospice being built at Wheller Gardens, Chermside. The event was a huge hit with participants, and raised $10,000 for the hospice, which will provide respite and end-of-life care for children with life-limiting conditions, and their families. Artist Rachel James was commissioned to create hummingbird-themed artworks, which

were then auctioned off for $1,900. The generous buyers then gifted the paintings back to Hummingbird House. Jo Hein, a member of Rotary Club of Nundah, said that businesses from the Northern suburbs had been very generous with donations.

Although we have a population of more than 23 million, there are only two children’s hospices in Australia, and none in Queensland. Rotary is helping Hummingbird House to change this.

“In the Nundah area, special thanks goes to The Clark Brothers Ray White Nundah, Amanda Stein Panda Pearls, and Wayne Swan, MP for Lilley.” If you’d like to contribute to Hummingbird House, contact Rotary via secretary.nundah@rotary9600.org to arrange a tax-deductible donation.
