Paradise for home and garden lovers The Home Collective Markets are the latest markets to hit Brisbane’s northside. Held at the Wavell Heights Community Hall, the markets are the brainchild of Helen and Abby Davis. The markets are purely for the home and garden lover, with a range of local small businesses hosting stalls offering items that concentrate entirely on the home and garden. The Home Collective markets have proven very popular with northside residents.
“To see the market’s popularity soar has been a definite highlight”, says Helen Davis. “We love the promotion it gives to small businesses, showcasing their talents and craftsmanship.” Helen enjoys seeing the latest homeware trends among the 25 stallholders who attend each market day. “It is going to be a green year with lots of indoor plants, artwork with a botanical feel and different shades of green, including jade and emerald,” says Helen. “You can never have enough timber too – old, up-cycled, new, raw, stained – anyway it comes!” The markets raise money for the RSPCA, with the small entry fee being donated to the not-for-profit organisation. For a confidential discussion about your personal financial situation, drop in for a coffee or give me a call.
With close to a decade’s experience, I love what I do. I thrive on providing clarity and helping my clients get their finances on track to secure their future. I don’t charge percentage based fees, instead charging flat fees that change depending on scope and complexity. This is in-line with the work we do and the value we provide.
A new year - plans for change? With the start of a new year, people often think about change. For some, this change might include moving or renovating/extending. If this is you, where do you start? Do you write a list of what you think you might want in the right home or inspect a few properties to find out what you like? Or maybe you seek advice about how much money you can borrow or should spend on the right home? Each option is viable and if you want to do a little window-shopping that’s fine - but what happens if you find the perfect place? Can you afford it? If you’re serious about making this change, take some time to work out what you can really spend.
An independent professional finance broker will help you work through the process of making your change within your budget. That’s where I’d advise you start if you’re making a change to your property situation. Even though my wife works for a bank, I still check my finance options with Kenwood at simplefinancesolutions.com.au. A home is our shelter, somewhere to relax and enjoy ourselves, spend time with friends and loved ones and it’s often our greatest source of wealth. So it’s important to make the right change, isn’t it?

Preserving local history Nundah State School, in Bage Street, has become heritage listed by the QLD Government. The school buildings, which date back to 1915, demonstrate the evolution of Queensland’s state education history and demonstrate the principal characteristics of a Queensland state school. Ms Deb Cox, Principal of the Nundah State School, is pleased that the school has been recognised for its historical significance.
“Having celebrated our 150th year in 2015, it was timely that our school site was heritage listed to preserve its unique history of architecture,” says Ms Cox.
Your local dental specialists Cameron Chau and Mark Smith Dentists are located in the heart of Nundah Village and provide a full range of dental services, including check-ups, cleaning, fillings, extractions, veneers, root canal treatments, teeth whitening and cosmetic dental. Offering services to clients of all ages, they also work with families on ensuring healthy teeth and gums for children. “We advise children to always brush twice daily, and if a parent or guardian can help that’s even better!” says Mark Smith.
“As the Principal of Nundah State School, I see myself as guardian of our architectural history by inspiring developments in a way which respects the past, and enables learning for the future.” The Nundah State School has a strong and ongoing association with the Nundah community and now has over 700 students enrolled in Prep to Year 6. “Children should also avoid sugary and acidic foods and regular check-ups are key. We suggest children come in for their first check-up when they are around 3 - 4 years old.” Cameron Chau Mark Smith Dentists also offer mouth guards for contact sports – which are important not only in saving teeth, but also for protecting jaws. Nundah mum becomes online sensation Local Nundah mum-of-two Lauren Patterson has become a social media sensation after her online blog resonated with parents across Australia and the globe. Lauren has over 100,000 followers on social media and 90,000 views per month on her website. She started her blog when she was pregnant with her second child to share her honest experiences about pregnancy and motherhood. “I never thought that anyone would read it,” says Lauren, “but for some reason people kept sharing it and it just grew like I never imagined.” Her blog, MadMaxMum is named after her two children Madisyn and Max, and shares the joys and struggles of parenthood and raising children.
“I think my honesty makes me relatable to everyday mums, because I am just like everyone else.” Lauren’s blog and social media posts are a mix of funny stories, health and fitness advice and serious topics, including depression, anxiety and the struggles of motherhood. This blend of humour and honesty has made Lauren a firm favourite with other parents and those struggling with their own day-to-day issues. Lauren’s passion in life is her fitness career, which she incorporates into her blog and into her life as a Nundah local. “I LOVE Nundah! The kids and I can get coffee, brekky, groceries and when I don’t have the kids – a drink! We walk EVERYWHERE and everything we need is right around the corner!” says Lauren. Celebrating 15 years in Nundah - It’s all under one roof Divine Smiles is celebrating 15 years providing caring and professional dentistry work in Nundah. Dr Ram and Dr Chitra Das started their practice with the aim to cater for a wide variety of dentistry needs – from simple procedures, including fillings, to more complex treatments like full mouth implant support crowns. The team includes Alana and Malavika , who are very professional and caring hygienists, and a bunch of very cheerful, highly trained dental assistants.
Hidden treasure in Nundah Samantha and Sam, Northgate locals, knew they were on to something when a converted storage shed became available in Nundah. “We had been keeping our eye out for a space in Nundah for some time, but we wanted something unique, if not a little quirky,” says Samantha. The space on Chapel St was perfect for their new venture – an espresso bar called Embargo’s on chapel.
In Nundah, sleep-related dental disorders have been on the rise, and the team at Divine Smiles assist by facilitating sleep studies, which provide specific information on the best course of treatment, including mouth guards to prevent further damage. The team at Divine Smiles see the benefits of working in the area. “Nundah is a great suburb with a vibrant community”, says Dr Das. “Not to mention the great eating places, great healthcare facilities and opportunities for physical fitness!” Divine Smiles | 1386 Sandgate Road, Nundah 3256 9566 | www.dentist-brisbane.com.au
The lane-way location offers Clandestino speciality coffee, along with nitro coffee, cold-drip coffee, cold-pressed juices, prepacked sandwiches, treats and daily specials. Embargo’s has also joined forces with local dive bar, Fitz + Potts, with regulars now able to enjoy Embargo’s coffee on the rooftop, simply by ordering at the bar. Samantha is excited about Embargo’s latest offering – late-night desserts. “We are now open Friday and Saturday evenings, with coffee and desserts being served until late,” says Samantha. “We can’t wait to welcome everyone to our little space on Chapel St.” Embargo’s on chapel | 1176 Sandgate Road 0436 465 497 |

A Happy New Year to all the readers of Loving Nundah. 2017 promises to be a busy year in and around Nundah. We know parking is an important issue in Nundah - we are progressing with the Nundah Village Parking Review with a view to optimising the on-street parking in and around the Nundah Village precinct. The Banyo Northgate Neighbourhood Plan process is now also underway. This project will include parts of Nundah that have not been captured in other plans. If you would like to provide input to this process you can do so via the survey by visiting www.brisbane.qld.gov.au and searching “Banyo-Northgate”.

Nundah locals make house renovating a dream After many years in the building industry and hearing the horror stories too often, Nundah locals Tom and Skye decided it was time to create a building experience that would have clients smiling from start, middle to end. So Tom and Skye started Dream Projects & Properties, which specialise in custom home builds and large renovations. “Our goal is to create personalised building solutions that are truly unique to each family”, says Skye.
“One of the best things about our job is seeing the clients satisfaction from our finished projects and knowing we have built quality relationships for life.” Tom and Skye have created an online portal for their clients, which allows clients to have access to every detail of their project 24/7. Tom and Skye have built a fantastic team that are enthusiastic and value their client relationships. “Our team makes sure we create a personalised building solution that maximises our clients lifestyle, budget and property,’ says Skye. “We want to create projects and an experience that clients can talk about proudly with their friends and family at their next BBQ!” Dream Projects & Properties | 07 3180 3804 https://dreamprojectsproperties.com.au

Change this sentence to: “Legal problems rarely exist in isolation as individuals may also be affected by economic and political uncertainties, and social and cultural concerns. These issues can be compounded by day-to-day worries like paying expenses, jobs, caring for others, fractured relationships and domestic violence. It is easy for people to feel lost in the daunting legal process with complicated jargon, forms and procedures. Lawyers “know the system” but private ones are often expensive, while government legal assistance has limited resources. Despite need, many cannot access legal help. At the Nundah Community Legal Service (NCLS), we help break the cycle of hardship and despair by providing the community with access to justice through free, quality, local, accessible, often “triage” and sometimes “last resort” legal service. We do this through our long established weekly Wednesday drop-in advice service staffed by dedicated volunteer lawyers (many with specific expertise) and students, together with an employed senior generalist solicitor who sees clients in longer daytime appointments. Like other community legal centres, our service is not means-tested and takes a holistic collaborative approach, providing effective information, advice and practical referrals to specialist legal, non-legal and multi-disciplinary services. The Wednesday Evening Drop-in Service is staffed by our Legal Service Administrator
(Jo Money), Volunteer Solicitors and Students and opens at 5:30pm for intake, with Solicitors seeing clients from 6:15pm. No appointment is necessary and clients are generally seen in order of arrival (subject to availability of a Solicitor with relevant experience). The Daytime Service is by appointment from Tuesday - Friday 9.30am - 2.45pm. To book an appointment, please phone 3260 6820. For lawyers and students wishing to volunteer their services to NCLS (including present and past volunteers), please contact Jo on 3260 6820. All volunteers for NCLS must undertake formal induction and be eligible for a Blue Card (working with children). We also provide community legal education to community groups and students and any requests for us to provide these may be made to Jo on 3260 6820. The NCLS looks forward to assisting our community in Brisbane’s North during 2017. Eugene H White Principal Solicitor Nundah Community Legal Service Nundah Community Support Group Inc. Nundah playgroup Would you like to meet other parents? Are the children craving your continual, undivided attention? Is the house cluttered with children’s toys and mess? If the answer is yes, then give yourself a break and come down to the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre on Tuesdays between 9.30am and 11.30am for Playgroup. The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre offers a relaxed and informal Playgroup that provides the opportunity to connect with other families in the local community. It is easy to join and the benefits can be life-long! The Centre understands that a sense of community plays an important role in the development of children. Our Playgroup community is inclusive and we encourage cultural and family diversity. This kind of diversity contributes to a rich, vibrant society, and promotes acceptance in children and families.
Playgroups are a great place to meet new people and establish friendships with those who have shared experiences. They’re also a great opportunity for children and parents to interact while trying new experiences. Playgroups help teach children how to play, interact and share with other children. Research also shows children who attend playgroup are less likely to be developmentally vulnerable when they start school (2012 Australian Early Development Census). So if you are interested in attending our Playgroup to take advantage of all these great opportunities just pop down on Tuesday at 9.30am. When: Every Tuesday, 9.30am – 11.30am Where: 14 Station Street, Nundah Bookings: Not required, please drop in.
Exciting new development

The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre is redeveloping its outdoor space and will be bringing a brand new social, community and event venue “The Nundah Laneway” to Nundah. It is envisioned that The Nundah Laneway will become a vibrant outdoor space in the heart of Nundah Village, with potential for local businesses, community organisations and enterprises to utilise this new multi purpose setting for events and pop-up business opportunities.
