These changes will take place at the end of the next State Election. The current sitting member of the Nudgee electorate is Leanne Linard MP. “Serving the local community as the State Member for Nudgee is a pleasure and a privilege. Celebrating 15 Years of Social Procurement in Nundah On Monday, May 29, the Nundah Community Enterprises Cooperative (NCEC) celebrated a fifteen-year partnership with Brisbane City Council (BCC) to maintain public spaces across Brisbane’s Northside.

The NCEC is a social enterprise and not-for-profit organisation that creates meaningful work for people with cognitive disabilities and other disadvantaged job seekers. Fifteen years ago the NCEC and BCC pioneered the concept of ‘Social Procurement’, which uses procurement not only to purchase a good or service but also achieve

a community benefit. BCC started a parks contract with NCEC to maintain two small parks in the area. Over time, the work has increased to almost 20 public spaces across Brisbane’s Northside, providing meaningful work for those who need it. This has since led to a council-wide social procurement program, which has benefited a range of community organisations. The NCEC won Best Australian Social Enterprise in 2015 and believe that the Council deserves some of the credit for the award for supporting NCEC’s programs.

Wolf Pack Sessions Stage 6 Health & Fitness and the Community Living Association have teamed up to empower and build confidence in a small group of constituents with various special needs and disabilities. Matt and Amelia Rutley, from Stage 6 Health & Fitness, have designed a 10-week exercise and movement program (called Wolf Pack) that focuses on what participants are capable of. “These days, it’s easy to focus on what people CAN’T do,” says Matt. “Sometimes we forget about all the amazing things they CAN do.”

The Wolf Pack sessions focus on building physical confidence and self esteem in the attendees. “Over the last 8 weeks we’ve been working with this bunch of legends, and the confidence these guys have gained in each class has been amazing to watch,” says Matt. The next Wolf Pack series is due to start in July. Contact Matt and Amelia at Stage 6 for more information. The Importance of Sunglasses from an Early Age Just as sunlight can damage skin, it can also threaten your sight. With over 27 years’ experience, Eyecare Plus Nundah Optometrist Nicole Stimson has seen the effects of long-term UV damage. “Many effects of UV to the eyes develop in the first decade of life,” says Nicole. “Long-term damage can include cataracts, macular degeneration and pterygia. Also, 5–10% of skin cancers occur around the eyes.”

Every age group benefits from wearing quality sunglasses. It is important to have children in the habit of wearing sunglasses whenever they are outside to prevent future sun damage. Eyecare Plus Nundah stocks a range of quality children’s sunglasses that meet Australian standards and effectively screen out UV light. The Roshambo sunglasses, available in baby and junior sizes, have frames that are bendable, virtually unbreakable, and available in a range of colours. “We discuss with children that sunglasses are like sunscreen for your eyes”, says Nicole. Eyecare Plus Nundah are also official stockists of Maui Jim Sunglasses for adults that block out glare and 100% of harmful UV, while boosting colour. Could you have Sleep Apnoea? In addition to overall body symptoms, a person with sleep apnoea can also have painful dental symptoms. Recent studies have shown that jaw pain is often caused by sleep apnoea. When the throat begins to relax before an apnoea episode, the jaw’s natural response is to clamp down and try to prevent the tissue from blocking the airway. This puts excessive stress on the jaw, mouth, neck and shoulders, which causes pain. Other dental signs of sleep apnoea include:

Nundah’s Tea Whisperer Nundah local, Skye, has taken her love for tea and started a campaign to raise awareness and funds for mental health and suicide prevention. After seeing the impact of mental health issues on family and friends, Skye wanted to raise awareness, start conversations and assist those impacted. “The Tea Whisperer started out of my appreciation for courage, connection and compassion,” says Skye. “In some situations people - including me - didn’t know what to say or how to act. But I thought we could make a connection over a cup of tea.”

• Cracked, broken or missing teeth • Excessive teeth grinding or jaw clenching • Worn front teeth • Pain when chewing • Chronic headaches If you notice any of the dental signs of sleep apnoea, or if you experience jaw pain, you should see a qualified dentist. Divine Smiles in Nundah works closely with sleep physicians to treat these issues and can organise home sleep studies and/or pulse oximeter readings, which monitors oxygen levels. Divine Smiles has experienced and qualified dentists to help solve your sleep-related dental problems. Speak to the friendly team today to help you sleep easier. Divine Smiles | 1386 Sandgate Road, Nundah | 1300 255 833

Skye has started a range of Tea Whisperer Treat Boxes, which allows people the chance to rest, relax and reconnect. The boxes contain inspiration quotes and everything to make a great cup of tea. A portion of the profits from each box sold will be donated to Mental Health organisations, including the Mental Awareness Foundation and Roses in the Ocean. EXPERT ADVICE

What are my Parenting Rights?

Buying the Right Property

Judges in the Federal Circuit Court/Family Court often say that children have rights and parents have responsibilities. While this is true, the Family Law Act contains provisions to protect children from harm (if applicable) and thereafter enable children to have a meaningful relationships with their parents and wider family circle.

When buying property, there are several factors worth considering. To start, there’s the location, style and size of the property. When deciding on a location, you’ll contemplate preferred suburbs and things important to you. Consider your access to work, education, local amenities and transport options, and don’t forget the town-planning implications. Occasionally you’ll know exactly what’s what, but sometimes it helps to glean information from someone in the know. As a local resident and active advocate for Nundah and surrounding suburbs, I’m happy to answer questions and impart local information to help your decision. When determining the style and size of your home, ponder your needs. What do you need and/or want?

Importantly, the Family Law Act does not differentiate de facto parents from married parents or otherwise. What is the next step? All parents must participate in compulsory mediation, save for rare exceptions due to urgency and risk, pursuant to section 60I of the Family Law Act. Once you have participated in mediation and made a genuine effort to resolve the issue or the other parent has refused to attend your scheduled mediation, you will be issued with a section 60I certificate, which will allow you to initiate Court proceedings. If you want further advice or help, call us on 07 3733 0901. KLM Solicitors | 5A/1192 Sandgate Road, Nundah

GUIDE

NUNDAH CORNER CAFE & BISTRO After opening and running five cafes, including popular local coffee shop Café Noma, owners Ramon Olsen and Kamol Nimnuan were looking for their next venture. When space opened on Sandgate Road, they jumped at the chance to open Nundah Corner Café & Bistro, a casual eatery offering all-day dining in a vibrant, yet relaxing, atmosphere. “We love the Northside,” says owner Ramon Olsen, “It’s booming and Nundah is one of the main Northside hubs. If you’re not on the Northside, you’re not living life!”

Nundah Corner offers a modern Australian menu with a European influence. The smashed avocado with pumpkin hummus, feta and roasted nuts is a firm favourite, with the Corner Stack (housemade hash browns, bacon, relish, brie and sour cream) a close second. With a takeaway window open from 6am, locals can quickly grab a custom house blend roasted by Merlo or a Tea Tonic organic herbal tea. Dinner service is next on the menu for Nundah Corner. “We will be opening soon for dinner on Wednesday through to Sunday,” says Ramon. “We will be showcasing some local produce... and beers and wines!” Nundah Corner is open Monday to Friday 7am – 3.30pm (takeaway window open from 6am), and Saturday and Sunday 7am – 3pm.

PIZZALUNGA DA CARLO Since opening eight months ago, Pizzalunga da Carlo has taken Nundah by storm with its metre long pizzas. Head Chef and Owner Carlo is committed to ensuring that diners have a truly authentic Italian dish, with only the freshest and finest ingredients used and the pizzas cooked in a woodfired pizza oven imported directly from Italy.

Carlo’s specialty pizzas have proved popular with locals – especially the Carlo (mozzarella, mushroom, zucchini, eggplant, salami, olives and fresh tomatoes) and the Nundah (mozzarella, spinach, ricotta cheese and pancetta). The latest addition to the Pizzalunga da Carlo menu has been housemade desserts, including panna cotta, Nutella pizza and tiramisu. “The tiramisu has been extremely popular,” says Carlo. “We had one customer say that heaven couldn’t get much better than this tiramisu!” But, it’s the Nutella pizza that has proved the most popular with both children and adults. “People can’t get enough of our Nutella pizzas! We’ve even made a few metre long Nutella pizzas.” Pizzalunga is licensed, with a wide range of wines, beers and spirits available and special Beer and Spritz nights every Tuesday and Wednesday.

MS Support Group in Nundah

The Nundah Village Parking Study, to optimise onstreet parking, is progressing and I am calling on local business owners, visitors and residents to complete an online survey, which closes on June 19. The survey will examine current occupancy levels of parking, and the average amount of time vehicles stay in particular parking spaces. The study will help us better understand the expectations of residents and visitors to Nundah Village, and will help us determine what needs to be done to alleviate parking presures. For more information and to complete the survey, visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/yoursay

Nundah resident, Ursula Lockwood, has started a MS Support Group to assist those in the community with multiple sclerosis. After seeing a need in the area, Ursula started the group to provide information and tips to locals with multiple sclerosis and to bring like-minded people together to help each other.

Ursula’s dedication to the MS Support Group and her regular fundraising efforts were recognised at Government House on Tuesday, May 30 when she was awarded the Living Positively with MS award by His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersery AC at the 2017 World MS Day Awards. Ursula is not slowing down since being recognised. “In the near future I’d like to organise local outings for the Support Group to areas of Brisbane. It’s a great way to get those with MS back into the community and socialising with people who have similar shared experiences.” The MS Support Group meets monthly at the Nundah Activity Centre from 1pm – 3pm. The next meetings will be held on June 13 and July 11. MS Support Group | Nundah Activity Centre, 15 Jenner Street, Nundah 0419 103 291 |

Toombul Shire Hall in Nundah and Northgate Hall in Northgate are undergoing upgrades to improve facilities for the whole community. Of particular relevance are the upgrades that will support access and inclusion for people with mobility challenges, such as those in wheelchairs.

With all details kept well under wraps, over 100 guests assembled at the café outside Go Health Club where they were entertained by the talents of freestyle rap artist 21 hundred. Then it was time for the party to really get started! The stunning samba girls from Sambaliscious escorted revellers through Nundah to the secret venue… the new Platform 14 laneway space at Nundah Neighbourhood Centre, which had been transformed for a night of Rio Carnivale-inspired fun. Sambaliscious set the tone with a hip-shaking feathery spectacular performance, followed by a stream of dance beats from DJ Jai King Koi, who kept the party going well into the night and left guests wanting more. Magician Thom Bedlam added to the spectacle, while talented

face painter Rebekah from Cheeky Faces added more bedazzle. Thanks to some local community support, guests grazed on food from PizzaLunga da Carlo, Burger Urge and Ciao Gelato. The event was the first of its kind at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre, officially christening the newly refurbished laneway space.

The Power Station Co will donate a portion of ticket sales from the night, as well as other fundraising initiatives, in a bid to raise $6,000 for the NNC. This will cover the cost for 20 deserving women to participate in the Journeys program, which gives domestic violence survivors the skills and support needed to get back on their feet.

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month With May being Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, the Centre was involved in a number of events and activities that raised awareness on the issues surrounding domestic and family violence and raised funds to support our vital services to those affected by domestic and family violence. Sharon Gingell, Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Coordinator and Lisa Berlin, Family Support Worker, participated in the Sandbag Peaceful Walk and Candle Lighting Ceremony held in Sandgate during May. Sharon and Lisa joined Police, domestic violence support workers, survivors and community members on a walk through Sandgate Business District, which culminated in a candle lighting ceremony and panel discussion at Sandgate Town Hall.

Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Community Art Show The third annual Art Show was held over the first weekend in June. It was another hugely successful weekend, raising money for Art Therapy Workshops for women who have experienced domestic violence. This year we were fortunate to welcome Toombul Shopping Centre as our Principal Sponsor. The Toombul Shopping Centre offered a fantastic opportunity to extend the Art Show event, with a Pop Up Art Gallery and Live Art Performance leading up to Opening Night. The Live Art performances were held on Saturday, May 27 and engaged three art forms: the visual, the musical and physical movement, which all come together in the form of an improvised collaboration. Each performance included visual artists, Wendy Cumes-Rowell, Alicia Hollier and Julie Purcell all practicing artists based in Brisbane. Collaborating with the artists was Hannah Hughes, a dancer from Brisbane who has spent years dancing for the Queensland Ballet. Fluid movement comes naturally to Hannah, allowing her to respond and move to the pace of the musicians and be a source of inspiration for the visual artists. Alongside the artists was a string quartet, co-ordinated by Byron Mengel, a musician from Manhattan who is now a permanent member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. The result of this was the creation of a piece of art that was truly unique to the performance and moment in time. Hillhouse Burrough McKeown Lawyers also held their Luncheon on Friday June 2 and welcomed guest speakers Rebecca Poulson, Kim Burgess and Wendy Cumes, who all gave their own personal insight into how domestic violence had impacted their lives and work. Guests were able to get a sneak preview of the art and op-

portunity to purchase before opening night that evening. We would like to thank everyone who volunteered with the Art Show. In particular we owe a huge thank you to Amy Sanders-Robbins, Wendy Cumes-Rowell, Alicia Hollier and Barrie Cumes who gave many, many hours of their time and resources to not only make the Art Show a key event in the local community but raise funds and awareness of the impacts of domestic and family violence on women, children and the community.
