Best Bar in Brisbane Congratulations to Nundah bar Fitz + Potts, who was awarded Best Bar in Brisbane for the second year in a row by the annual Weekend Edition awards. Owner Cassie Potts was thrilled with the results. “This win; in a competition that has us up against some esteemed and pretty swank inner city venues, is a victory for Nundah as a whole. It is also validation of how important local bars are to the culture and sense of community of a suburb. I always wanted F+P to be a community hub, rather that just another venue, and I think the number of people who voted for us shows that this is the case.” Fitz + Potts | 1180 Sandgate Road, Nundah www.fitzandpotts.com.au

Bridgestone Select Servicing Nundah and Hendra After three years of managing the Bridgestone Select Nundah store, owner Caleb Sos has now expanded and is the new owner of Bridgestone Select Hendra. Working with Nundah’s store manager Aaron, and Hendra’s store manager, Trent, Caleb is able to offer Brisbane Northside residents more services over the two locations.
“Although we specialise in tyres, we have four qualified mechanics across our two locations in addition to our specialist tyre staff. Our experienced team perform logbook servicing (without voiding any new car warranty), general servicing and mechanical repairs to all makes and models,” says Caleb. With two handy locations, customers in Nundah can easily walk to the popular Nundah Village cafes and shopping centre. In Hendra, customers are close to the airport, commercial hubs and the award-winning Wolff Coffee Roasters next door. Caleb and the team offer a one-stop shop of complete vehicle maintenance in two handy locations. The team is happy to assist you with any mechanical concerns – visit them in Nundah or Hendra today. Nundah Village Dental talk children’s teeth The team at Nundah Village Dental recommend your child’s first visit is from 6-12 months, when the first tooth erupts. Why do baby teeth need fillings? Decay in baby teeth is common and needs to be treated as soon as possible. They are used to hold space for adult teeth until 12-14 years old. Leaving decay or removing a tooth early can lead to infection, pain or future orthodontic problems. When can my child brush their teeth alone? Tooth brushing is a fine motor skill and often children are unable to brush well until the age of 9. If your child can’t tie their shoelaces, often they don’t have the dexterity to brush well either. Surprised by some of these answers? If your child is due for an examination, Nundah Village Dental offers a heavily reduced fee for children’s appointments and welcomes children eligible under the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme. Please call Megan, Mel, Jess or Linda to book an appointment. Nundah Village Dental Shop 6/1231 Sangate Rd, Nundah Ph 3260 6200 www.nundahdental.com.au

HEALTH & FITNESS
with Ben Tibben Mozmo Creative
with Bianca Elliott The Joint Nundah
Is your website effective?
Choose Physio: Acupuncture & Dry Needling
Here are five key points to consider when creating an effective website:
What is acupuncture? Acupuncture is a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into specific points in the skin to create neurophysiological reactions in the body, stimulating a healing and pain-relieving effect. Its background is in traditional Chinese medicine, however we take a Western approach and draw on these neurophysiological effects to help to treat pain.
1. Show me where to click. Just about every web page is designed to cause me to connect, to buy, to approve, to move to the next step. Okay, great. Where is the button to do that? 2. 0.5 seconds to impress. Your website has been trusted or not before the user has even read a few words on the site. How do you make the first impression a ‘Yes’?
What is dry needling? It is a technique using acupuncture-type needles. The needle is inserted into a ‘trigger point’ in a tight muscle to elicit a twitch response. This twitch response helps the muscle to release and become less tight.
3. Made for mobile? Most web interactions are now mobile, where speed and clarity rule. Is your site mobile ready?
Is acupuncture safe? Yes - it is very safe! Ask for your physiotherapist’s qualifications if considering acupuncture. The Joint physiotherapists have undergone specific training, including APA accredited musculoskeletal segmental acupuncture and dry needling courses.
4. The site is live - where are my orders? You’ve just launched a web site… so how do people find it and know to visit? 5. Measure, learn & adapt. There is no such thing as set and forget… for your site to be a business tool it must give you usable data and evolve over time to be more effective. It could be time to change the way you engage with your website and the market. I’m hoping we can help. What conditions can acupuncture help with? • Headaches and neck/shoulder pain • Tendinopathies including achilles, tennis elbow, de querveins (wrist) • Lower back and hip pain • Plantar fasciitis Interested in acupuncture? Easy vertical gardens for apartments
Why buyers miss out on their dream home
If you live in an apartment building, you know the struggle is real if you have a green thumb. But if space is an issue and you can’t go horizontal, go vertical! Start by choosing the right kind of style that would work well with your space and taste. From terracotta pots to metallic tins hung on wood pallets or wooden slats, there are endless options. When choosing your plants, think about the amount of sunshine the area receives.
We help people move and, in this role, we often meet disappointed buyers who have failed to secure the right home. There are four common traps to avoid to reduce the risk of losing a property to another buyer.
Most edible plants grow well in vertical gardens, so if you love cooking, consider planting some herbs. Finally, don’t forget to give constant care and attention just like any other garden. Regular watering and pruning will ensure your vertical garden stays lush. Vertical gardens provide you with flora but are also adaptable and aesthetically attractive. In fact, some plants also act as air purifiers. Call us, your local green experts. We offer a variety of vertical garden products and advice to suit your needs. Hendra Hardware | 23 Zillman Road, Hendra
1. Waiting until they find the perfect home before placing their own home up for sale. Plan for your sale to speed up the process if you find the right place.
2. Procrastination and over-shopping. The “We love it, but we’d better keep looking” buyers often become the “We should have bought that one” buyers. Don’t wait too long.
3. Failing to secure finance. Secure your finance by getting pre-approval to give you confidence in your decisions.
4. Failing to register details with an agent. Share your details and your wish list. Good agents want to help and will match you to suitable properties. Buyers often compete with other buyers for the same property, especially when the marketplace demand is outpacing the supply. To avoid disappointment, it pays to prepare so you can act quickly. If you love it, secure it before it’s gone.

Blushing Bouquet Prices start $69.99
In Brisbane, OzHarvest works with 200 food donors to deliver directly to more than 100 charitable agencies. Amy Cobb, Queensland State Manager at OzHarvest, says that over half of all food wasted comes from the home. “The good news is that food waste is avoidable! It just involves getting into some good habits at home and using the ‘buy what you need, eat what you buy’ philosophy,” says Amy. “Check your fridge before you shop, write a list and stick to it and plan your weekly meals.” OzHarvest Brisbane is looking for local volunteers to assist with the food rescue vans and to help at events. Meet the Agent: Judith Crawford Judith Crawford is a local real estate agent who has been working in the real estate industry on Brisbane’s northside for 29 years. Judith lives in Clayfield and frequents Nundah for its services, dining and coffee. “The re-generation of Nundah has changed the profile of this area forever – for the better. There is a buzz in the air in Nundah!” says Judith. “I find Clayfield is a bit more sedate, more traditional, so a great option for people who want to live on the periphery of the action without it walking past their door.”
Achieving better health in Nundah
Judith, who specialises in units and townhouses in the area, says that the biggest change over the years has been the shift in affordability. “When I started working in real estate in 1989 a buyer could pay $100K for a three bedroom home,” says Judith. “Now even the smallest one bedroom unit is way more than this!” “There is definitely an increase in the demand for townhouses and units as prices rise. They are a great investment for first home buyers who are looking to enter the property market.” Have you got some questions about real estate in the local area? Nundah Community Enterprises Co-operative celebrates 20 years The Nundah Community Enterprises Co-operative (NCEC), which creates sustainable employment and training opportunities for people with mental illness, learning difficulties or an intellectual disability, is celebrating its 20th year of operation in Nundah in May. The NCEC was founded in 1998 by group of eight local people with intellectual disability and volunteer supporters. Finding it difficult to find worthwhile work, they decided to form a small jobs club, which turned over $2,000 in the first year. Over the next twenty years, the NCEC expanded and now manages two businesses generating more than half a million dollars annually and creating long-term employment for 21 members. In 2015, the NCEC won Australia’s best Small Social Enterprise of the Year and has been a finalist in every year of the awards. Richard Warner, NCEC Coordinator, believes that creating meaningful work can help the entire community. “Many people experience social isolation and can find it hard to make linkages and connections in the community,” says Richard. “Our greatest joy is to see people formerly denied the chance to take ownership and control of their economic situation.”
The NCEC manages local café, Espresso Train and Catering, which is Australia’s longest running social enterprise café and a Parks & Maintenance crew, which maintains 30 public parks and open spaces in Brisbane. Richard and the team at NCEC are looking forward to growing the current businesses and continuing to support other social enterprise initiatives. “We plan to grow and are on the look-out for more work to enable this. We want to keep honing our business to be the best they can be at the same time as creating a supportive work environment for those who need it,” says Richard. Richard encourages locals to support the NCEC – and the easiest way to do this is to order your next coffee at Espresso Train. “The best way to support us is to purchase from us! Become a regular in our café, order some catering and, if you know of a commercial property that needs maintenance, get our parks team to quote. We’re thankful to the local community – if you haven’t visited before, drop down to see us fora cuppa and something to eat. You will be assured of a friendly smile!”

Our local busy bees Liby Edwards finished her 9-to-5 city job in early 2017 and decided she wanted to do something she cared about and that would have a positive impact on the local area. With a love of gardening, Liby decided to try beekeeping – and her business Libees Honey was formed. With twenty hives located in Wavell Heights, Aspley and Zillmere, Liby produces chemical and hormone-free honey, which is raw (not heat-treated) and has no added preservatives or nasties.
“There are so many benefits of eating locally-produced raw honey,” says Liby. “Consuming locally-produced honey can reduce hayfever and allergies and buying local reduces our carbon footprint.” Libees Honey can be purchased from local cafes and businesses, including Espresso Train in Nundah, Café Lacuna at Wavell Heights and the Geebung Post Office. “Customers may notice that the honey’s colour and flavour can differ – this will vary depending on what the bees are consuming in our local area,” says Liby. Liby is looking to expand the range, with wax blocks and wax fabric wraps on the horizon. Libees Honey www.libeeshoney.com.au |

A message from Federal Member for Lilley, Wayne Swan MP Last month I announced that I will not be contesting the seat of Lilley at the next federal election. It has been an incredible privilege to represent our local community in the national Parliament for twenty-two-and-a-half years. I’m honoured that throughout my time as your representative, I’ve helped to deliver significant upgrades across more than forty schools, extended the Boondall Wetlands, saved the Eventide Nursing Home, invested in The Prince Charles Hospital, overseen the Gateway Upgrade North, and much more.
I’m also proud of the work our government did to ensure Australia – and our local community – avoided a recession during the Global Financial Crisis. Thank you for your continued support over all these years. I look forward to seeing you in the streets, the schools and the supermarkets of our local area and working as hard as ever to represent you in Parliament every day until the next election. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE
Community book swap The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre has introduced a Community Book Swap, to encourage a love of reading and to help those who struggle with their literacy. The book swap is located at the front of the centre and is available to everyone. Please feel free to pop down anytime and have a browse, take a book and/or leave a book. If you have books/magazines you’d like to donate to the centre, they will be warmly welcomed.
Domestic and family violence month May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, The key aims of the month are to: • raise community awareness of domestic and family violence and its impacts; • promote a clear message of no tolerance of domestic and family violence in Queensland communities; • ensure those who are experiencing domestic and family violence know how to access help and support;
Donations Thank you to everyone who has given donations to our food relief program. Your assistance has helped a number of individuals and families with food and toiletries when they have needed it the most. We are still seeking further donations and, if you are able to help with any of the following items, please contact the Centre and arrange a time to drop off either during or outside of office hours. Please do not leave items at the front door when we are closed, as these items can often not be used due to health and safety issues. • Pantry items including tinned food, rice, pasta, sauces, cereals, biscuits, long-life milk etc (all items need to be in date) • Toiletries, including women’s sanitary items, soap, toothpaste, deodorants and men’s toiletries • Baby items in particular nappies, wipes, baby food and unopened tins of formula With the colder weather quickly approaching, our sewing ladies have been busy making quilts to donate to women and children who have escaped domestic violence. The ladies make all of the quilts in their own time using donated materials. If you have any old blankets, quilts, wadding etc that you no longer need, we would greatly appreciate them here at the Centre as they make very good fill for the handmade quilts. Thank you for your donations!

• encourage people who use abuse and/or violence to take responsibility for their abusive behaviour and seek support to change. At the Centre, we currently provide legal, counselling and support services to anyone who has experienced domestic and/or family violence. Recently, the Centre opened a Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic to better respond to women with legal issues regarding family law and domestic violence. The Centre has seen a wide range of social, cultural and economically diverse clients since the clinic opened in November 2017. Two-thirds of the Family Law Clinic clients have experienced domestic violence. Clients who have experienced domestic violence, see us not only for assistance with their domestic violence matter, but also associated family law matters. Domestic violence is not only physical violence, it can also be financial abuse, which can make leaving difficult. This disadvantage makes our services all the more important, since most cannot afford to obtain a private
solicitor. We assist clients to navigate the family law system, providing them with much needed support. Of the clients who have experienced domestic violence, most of them have children from their relationship. When dealing with parenting matters, the court must determine what is in the best interest of the child. Regularly this means a relationship with both parents. This requires the victim to not only have an ongoing contact with the perpetrator, but to facilitate the relationship between parent and child.
Our clients frequently need emotional and psychological support when dealing with the effects of domestic violence. The Clinic’s holistic approach enables us to provide both legal and emotional support for our clients by providing referrals in-house to our Family Support Worker as well as externally to domestic violence and other support services for assistance with issues including finding safe, secure housing, parenting support, counselling and financial assistance. For clients who are referred internally, they are able to access a number of services including individual and group counselling, food relief, social and emotional support and further information and referral services. For many of the women, being able to receive both legal and social support from one service significantly reduces many of the barriers they experience and greatly assists them to move towards a life free of violence and abuse for them and their children.
Seeking volunteers Our sewing group has grown quite a lot in the last few months and we are putting a call out for volunteers to assist with the running of the group. You don’t need to be an expert sewer, just have some knowledge in how to use a sewing machine and work a pattern. What’s most important is being available on a Wednesday morning from 10am to 12pm and good communication skills. If you are interested please contact the Centre on 3260 6820 or admin1@nundahcc.org.au. Visit lovingnundah.com.au | Twitter @lovingnundah | Facebook/lovingnundah
Astrophysics project placement for local year 12 student
Sarah Bradbury, a year 12 student at Mary MacKillop College, has been offered a place in the QUT Astrophysics Project placement. Sarah, who was selected from hundreds of applications across Queensland, will join 9 other students in the placement. In the project placement, interns will explore concepts in rocket science, space travel and exoplanet habitability to design a mission to relocate humanity to a nearby solar system and save the human race. Using a combination of advanced astrophysics simulation software and practical experiments, interns will determine the composition of planets and stars, applying physics, mathematics and basic coding to guide rocket simulators into orbit and beyond.
Intern students will leave the placement understanding the critical role astrophysics research plays in investigating the stability and sustainability of Planet Earth in our complex and ever-changing corner of the universe. Sarah has been recognised by the school for her outstanding STEM leadership potential, and shows a great interest in physics and aerospace engineering. Sarah is looking to apply at QUT to further her studies and her dream is to work at NASA. Mary MacKillop College | 60 Bage Street, Nundah | Ph 3266 2100
