THREE NUNDAH FEATURE Right in the heart of Nundah Village, THREE is the final chapter that completes the vision for this vibrant community masterplan. Now well under construction, the final stage of this project is an exciting milestone that has been 10 years in the making. “We are seeing strong interest from owner-occupiers as they respond to the lifestyle advantages of living in the new Nundah,” says Craig Wright, Sales and Marketing Manager at Property Solutions.
“We’ve designed this community around the lifestyle on offer, and have made sure we have secured highquality retailers and dining operators, which has significantly uplifted the area and made it a destination, rather than a thoroughfare.” THREE Nundah Village will rise nine levels and comprise 120 one- and two-bedroom apartments, as well as commercial space on Station Street.

with Ben Stasiak First in Feet Podiatry, The Joint Nundah
Treat your feet For most of us, our feet tend to be a forgotten and neglected part of our body… until they let us know there is something wrong! Did you know that approximately one third of the bones in the human skeleton are in our feet? There are also more nerve endings here than another other part of our body. This is why seeking a Podiatrist can assist those in pain or with troublesome feet issues.
Feet are complex, and that’s why you need a tailored approach from a comprehensive podiatry service using multiple treatment methods. Hands-on manual therapies such as joint mobilisation, exercise rehabilitation and dry needling (acupuncture) can be used to successfully treat various foot problems. Emerging technology, including foot pressure measurement and 3D laser foot scanning, allows podiatrists to generate custom orthotic insoles for clients. First in Feet Podiatry works in close consultation with the physiotherapists at The Joint to achieve the best outcome for anyone with foot and lower limb problems. Ben from First in Feet Podiatry visits The Joint Nundah twice a week at 9/1220 Sandgate Road, Nundah. Freeze your bill, not your home
The First Home Owners’ Grant (FHOG)
Here are a few inside tips by our team that can help you prep your home for winter effectively:
The FHOG is a state government initiative to help first home buyers own their first home sooner. You may be eligible for the $20,000 FHOG if you’re at least 18 years old, you’ve never owned a property, you’re an Australian citizen or permanent resident (or applying with someone who is) and you’re either ‘building’ or ‘buying a brand new home’ in Queensland, valued under $750,000.
Heat loss – invest in door seals, draft-proofing strips and door snakes. Seal any cracks in ceiling and walls, doors, floors and windows. Energy usage – replace any incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs. Room heaters – use a heater that is an appropriate size for the room and place it away from windows where heat can be lost.
Important points:
Water usage – swap to a water-efficient showerhead to save water and money.
• Receive the FHOG faster by applying through your financier
- Building: the grant is paid upon slab being poured
Appliance usage – invest in a heavy-duty 24-hour timer which turns appliances on or off automatically for energy-saving and convenience.
- Buying: the grant is paid at settlement
PRO TIP Install an energy cost meter, which calculates the running cost of electrical appliances and displays consumption, cost, voltage and current.
• You can use the FHOG $20,000 in your deposit calculations
• Y ou must move into your new home within 12 months of the contract date and live there consecutively for at least 6 months • T he FHOG is currently available for contracts signed by 30 June 2018
Hendra Hardware has all of these products available – chat to the team instore for more advice and to get your home set up for winter.
• A ny changes to the FHOG from 1 July 2018 will be announced in the State Budget in mid-June

With a rich history spanning over 30 years, Clayfield Jewellery is leading the way in the latest technology in the jewellery industry. After moving from Clayfield to Nundah Village in 2007, owner Trevor Sim created a boutique which not only offers a wide range of jewellery pieces, but also an onsite jewellery workshop that uses the latest 3D technology.
“Our team is constantly researching and embracing the latest technologies available in the industry, including laser welding, CAD design, 3D printing, 3D scanning and x-ray for analysing precious metal,” says Trevor. These new technologies allow the team to create clients’ pieces in the CAD and print a live 3D prototype. “Letting the client see a 3D print of their design removes the anxiety and uncertainty of how a piece will look,” says Trevor. “In the ‘old days’ (which were not so long ago), we went straight from sketch to making the piece, relying on the communication with the client in sharing their ideas. “The new technology has meant that clients can have more input into creating their unique, beautiful pieces.” Clayfield Jewellery Shop 2, Nundah Village Shopping Centre, 1193 Sandgate Road, Nundah Ph: 3266 9555 www.clayfieldjewellery.com.au /clayfieldjewellerystore /clayfieldjewellery

Urban Sketchers in Nundah Nundah Village enjoyed a visit from over twenty Urban Sketchers, who captured Nundah businesses and landscapes through on-location drawing. Urban Sketchers is an international group that uses drawing to connect people around the world. The Brisbane group meets each weekend in a different location to capture the area using a variety of mediums, including watercolour, acrylics, graphite pencil or charcoal. Recently, the group visited Nundah Village, to sketch the local area and to hold a gallery outside Nundah Corner, which displayed recent artworks from the group. Alan Innes, who organised the Nundah event, said that Nundah Village is an interesting location to sketch. “Nundah Village is a lovely urban setting due to its winding sloping road, the unusual intersections and the landscape. It has a pleasant variety of old and new buildings. All in all, a good place to go sketching,” says Alan. “I’m sure we’ll be back!” Urban Sketchers Brisbane /groups/brisbaneurbansketchers alaninnes.myportfolio.com

When was your last check-up? Even dentists have to sit in the dentist chair! Dr Marc Miller, from Nundah Village Dental, had his turn in the dental chair for his regular sixmonthly check and clean. Nundah Village Dental recommends that patients book a dental examination and professional clean twice a year. These regular checks help maintain healthy teeth and gums, maintain any existing work, and prevent any future issues. Many dental issues don’t become visible or cause pain until they are in more advanced stages. Therefore, regular visits allow your dentist to find early signs of disease and work with you to fix the problem. Nundah Village Dental has been caring for the community since 1981 and offers clients extended hours, with early morning, evening and weekend appointments available. New patients are always welcome. Is it time for your six-month check and clean? Simply call Linda, Megan, Jess or Mel and they will schedule your appointment to have you smiling like Dr Marc. Midnight at the Oasis Long Table Dinner Over 80 guests enjoyed a Middle Eastern-inspired feast at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre at Nundah Now’s Midnight at the Oasis Long Table Dinner fundraiser. The sold-out event, which raised funds for the Centre’s Domestic Violence and Family Support Program, was held at the Platform 14 Laneway on Station Street on Saturday, May 26.
The event’s food and beverages were all local, with the beverages from Banyo’s All in Brewing Co, and Nundah’s Norths Devils Leagues Club. The delicious food was made by The Good Food Trailer, Australia’s only social enterprise food trailer, based in Nundah, and served by staff with disadvantaged and refugee backgrounds. Councillor Adam Allan, Leanne Linard MP, Tim Nicols MP, The Brisbane Airport Corporation and Officeworks Virginia were all supporters of the event. Huge thanks to the volunteers from Nundah Now Inc, and staff of the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre who made this inaugural event a success. Nundah Now Inc nundahnow@nundah.com | 0421 332 231

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE
Dignity First Project – Donations Needed
Boomerang Bags Nundah – Reducing Plastic Bags in our Local Area Boomerang Bags Nundah is a community-driven, volunteer-run group that is tackling plastic pollution in the local area. With the Queensland bag ban coming into effect on 1 July, it is more important than ever to remember your reusable shopping bags. Boomerang Bags Nundah will be attending the Nundah Farmers Markets on Sunday, June 24 and then every Sunday in July. Tote bags and produce bags will be available for purchase, as well as more information on how locals can reduce their plastic bag usage.
Over the last 11 months, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre has been providing additional services and support to the local community via the Dignity First program. This program has focused on improving the lives of numerous people from a range of backgrounds who have sought assistance. To provide social connection and engagement, a regular weekly morning tea was organised where community members can come together, share stories and experiences, enjoy delicious, healthy home-cooked food, and form new friendships. Unfortunately, the Dignity First Project’s funding comes to an end in June and the Centre is exploring ways to continue to offer this muchneeded service. The Centre aims to continue the Tuesday lunch and food relief: however the Thursday lunch will finish up at the end of June. From July, the program will be run purely by volunteers and on donations provided by the local community.
Please lend your support to the Centre’s food relief program by donating any unwanted pantry items, including tinned food, rice, pasta, sauces, cereals, biscuits, long-life milk etc. All items need to be in date and can be dropped off at the Centre during office hours. Please do not leave items at the front of the Centre when closed, as these items cannot be used due to health and safety issues. The Centre would like to thank the staff and volunteers who have been involved in the project over the last 12 months, with a special thanks to Nigel Wesley, the Community Engagement Worker who will also be finishing up at the end of June. Donations are gratefully received at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre, 14 Station Street, Nundah between 9.30am – 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
National Sorry Day

Central to Australian society is social inclusion: the “fair go” with justice being available to all, but often that ideal is not reached. This is especially so for Indigenous Australians who are still subject to great disadvantage. The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and the Brisbane North Community Legal Service have long been committed to making our contribution to assisting our First Australians through our various programs and services. We have endeavoured to make our physical premises appropriately welcoming and comfortable, and recognise the importance of culture and respect by acknowledging the traditional custodians at our gatherings and paying respect to their Elders past, present, and emerging. Our engagement with our local Indigenous community has been long-term and we have placed a painting created to commemorate NAIDOC Week 2008 prominently at our entrance. As members of the local Noonga Reconciliation Group are based in North Brisbane, we have joined in attending Sorry Day ceremonies with its special significance to Indigenous Australians. The Noonga Reconciliation Group held its National Sorry Day Ceremony at the Kalinga Park Sorry Site on Friday, May 25. The ceremony provides the opportunity for thoughtful reflection of harm caused by policies and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s persistence, resistance, resilience and achievement.

Celebrating 40 Years of Support
Building Life Skills for Autism Positive People For people with autism, everyday things, like socialising, making friends and living independently can be difficult. Many young people on the autism spectrum can feel isolated and suffer from depression. Kwest4Learning, started by Kathleen West and Simon La Rosa, is making life easier for people with autism by creating social groups and life skills programs to build meaningful and fulfilling lives for people with autism. Starting as a single social group five years ago, Kwest4Learning has expanded to help participants get their learners permits, engage in health and fitness programs, learn independent living skills and find employment.
Local Nundah charity, Muscular Dystrophy Queensland (MDQ), is celebrating its 40th year of operation. Starting with a small group of concerned parents in 1978, the organisation has increased to provide a range of services for families living with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions. Muscular dystrophy is a genetic muscle-wasting condition that causes progressive muscle weakness. It often causes profound physical disability and there is currently no cure. Today, the prognosis for many of the muscular dystrophies is greatly improved. In 1978 it was unimaginable that Ken (pictured below) would still be with us today. With the help of families, businesses and supporters, MDQ is able to continue to provide services to Queensland families and to fundraise to support families who may not be covered by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Muscular Dystrophy Queensland is launching a Nundah Community Volunteer Committee and are looking for locals with a little spare time who would like to support the charity. For more information, visit www.mdqld.org.au or call 1800 676 364 to chat with Celeste. Muscular Dystrophy Queensland | 1149 Sandgate Road, Nundah
“We create a safe environment for young autism positive people to explore the social world and build their social skills and self-worth,” says Simon La Rosa. “We are passionate and driven to assist young people reach their true potential in life.” The social groups are held at the Nundah Activity Centre on Wednesday and Friday evenings, with a range of other life skills programs held regularly.
