Taking the Anxiety out of Dental Care A new dental clinic in Hendra wants to take the anxiety and fear out of visiting the dentist. Dr Trent Davidson, founder of Northside Dental Solutions, has created an innovative approach to dentistry to encourage more Brisbane northsiders to visit the dentist. “65% of Australians don’t regularly go to the dentist, with the two main reasons being cost and fear,” says Trent. With only a small number of dental services covered by Medicare, Trent understands that cost is a barrier for some.
“We have made our prices transparent and available online to reduce ‘bill shock’ at reception,” says Trent. “We also offer interest-free payment plans so people can get the work done now and pay for it later.”
Fear is the second-biggest barrier to dental health in Australia. Trent, who has a special interest in dental phobia and anxiety, has worked with psychologists to develop ways to introduce people to pain-free dentistry. Trent believes that every single person should have access to quality, pain-free dental care in Brisbane. “One person at a time, I hope to improve the dental health of the entire local community,” says Trent. “My favourite part of being a dentist is seeing the relief in people’s eyes when they realise that going to the dentist doesn’t have to be scary or expensive.” Northside Dental Solutions 1/341 Nudgee Road, Hendra Ph 3191 9646 northsidedentalsolutions.com.au
Future Auto Northgate Wins Workshop of the Year Future Auto Northgate was awarded 2018 Workshop of the Year at a Gala Awards ceremony held on the Gold Coast in November. Dudley Leighton, owner of Future Auto Northgate, was thrilled to receive the award, which has come after a year of big changes at the Toombul Road service centre. “After some time planning, we completed a number of significant improvements in 2018 including renovation of the building, expansion of the workshop from 4 bays to 6 bays to cope with increasing demand, upgraded tooling, and improved processes to ensure a better customer experience,” says Dudley. “To be recognised as Workshop Of The Year and to receive this award has just topped off a great year for our team!”
Dudley and his team, who have been serving the local area for over 25 years, received the award for excellence in customer service, local community support, and their contribution to the Future Auto network. “We want to cement our position as the best workshop by providing quality, affordable solutions for our customers,” says Dudley. “Our plan is to continue to improve our offering and our next objectives are to expand our courtesy car fleet and increase our engagement with, and support of, the community.” Future Auto Northgate | Ph 3260 7577 | 39 Toombul Road, Northgate |

Young Local Filmmaker Scoops Film Awards Forget Hollywood! Brisbane is where it’s at for aspiring filmmakers. Jamisyn Chapman, Year 12 Film, Television and New Media student and College Captain of Mary MacKillop College, has won the Port Shorts Young Filmmakers Award for 2018. Jamisyn’s experimental art film, Image en Mouvement, was described by Port Shorts as “beautifully crafted“ and composed of over 1,300 individually painted frames.
Stephen Curry, from the 1997 Australian film The Castle, called the young filmmaker personally to tell her the news. “It was really exciting and also a little funny because I felt like I was speaking to Dale Kerrigan,” Jamisyn said. Port Shorts is not the only Film Festival in which Jamisyn has experienced success. She was awarded Best Music Video at the Stuff It Film Festival – an international film competition for students. Image en Mouvement is shortlisted in Bond University’s upcoming BUFTA Film Competition, with a grand prize of a $100,000 scholarship. “We are living in a world where mainstream media presents a narrow view of the world. I intend to study Film and Television next year so I can give a voice to those who are marginalised by mainstream media,” Jamisyn said.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Banyo Northgate Neighbourhood Plan
I would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Much has been achieved in the area in 2018 and we look forward to a busy 2019. Spring in Nundah was celebrated with great crowds attending the annual Movies and Fireworks in the Park and Nundah Village Street Festival. Our sustainability initiatives have continued to expand, with Council supporting litter reduction events, composting hubs, community gardens, and recycling initiatives. The recycling magnets for the Northgate Ward have proven to be very popular with residents. Important road infrastructure initiatives have been undertaken, including an upgrade to the intersection of Sandgate Road and Hamilton Road. A project to improve safety with traffic lights at the rear entrance to Toombul in Widdop Street is also underway. A number of projects have been delivered in Nundah Village to assist residents and businesses including improved street gardens, tree lighting, and free wifi. We are also running the Local Business Partnership Initiative to see how Council can further assist businesses. I look forward to sharing more on this initiative.
The Banyo Northgate Neighbourhood Plan project has reached another milestone. The draft plan has been reviewed by the State Government and the latest version is now available to view.
Local Residents & Business Members Wanted! Join Nundah Now
The draft plan is available for review by the community who can also make submissions until 5pm, Monday 17 December. This project provides the framework for the owners of a number of underutilised sites to potentially transform them into much needed employment hubs, housing, community uses, and additional retail, while better leveraging existing infrastructure.
Watch a playful Aussie Christmas tale brought to life by The Electric Canvas, with an animated show projected on to City Hall, King George Square, every 15 minutes from 7.30pm, Friday 7 to Sunday 23 December. The Christmas Fireworks commence Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 December from 8pm to 8.15pm and are free to enjoy at South Bank Parklands. The annual Christmas Parade will march through the Queen Street Mall and Albert Street King George Square. The parade will take place at 7pm every night from Friday 14 until Sunday 23 December. Kedron Locals Launch Award-Winning Activewear Brand After being frustrated with purchasing activewear online, Kedron friends Stevie Angel and Nadia Tucker decided to launch their own brand of activewear – for all women. “We would order products that looked beautiful on models in photos but didn’t perform in real-life on bodies without model proportions,” says Stevie. “We believed that women deserved better.” Stevie and Nadia decided to launch Active Truth – locally made activewear that celebrates all women regardless of size, shape or stage of life. “Not only do we provide more sizes, we also consistently show a diverse range of women in our marketing,” says Stevie. “All healthy, happy, active – and never, ever photoshopped.“
Since launching two-and-a-half years ago, Active Truth has experienced rapid growth and recently won the 2018 Telstra Queensland Emerging and Energised Award, and the CCIQ Award for Outstanding Small Business at the 2018 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards. “Winning both awards this year was a great opportunity to stop and reflect on what we have achieved in two short years,” says Stevie. In 2019 Stevie and Nadia are looking to introduce a wider product range with more tops, tights, and a new accessories range. But in the meantime, you might spot Stevie and Nadia at the local Kedron Brook. “We both love Kedron Brook. It’s inspiring to see so many people out and about being active – families, cycling groups, parkrun, bootcamps and dog walkers,” says Stevie. “There are so many different options and we’re fortunate to have such a beautiful location right on our doorstep.” Active Truth | www.activetruth.com.au |

Meet the Agent – Tina Leveridge Wavell Heights local Tina Leveridge has been working as a real estate agent and interior designer for over 18 years. Tina understands the importance of styling a home in order to get a better return and is well known for her ability to present a home. “It should be common knowledge that styling a home will ensure that you achieve a premium price,” says Tina.
“On average, your investment in staging is between one and three percent of the home’s asking prices, yet it has been proven that property staging generates seven to ten percent return on profit.” Tina, who has seen many changes in the real estate industry, says that embracing social media and presenting the home in the best possible way is a great way to attract the right attention. “But really,” says Tina, “what hasn’t changed is that everyone wants the great Aussie dream of home ownership. And I love matching buyers with the right property for them.” SPECIAL OFFER: Tina is offering Loving Nundah readers a free styling consultation for anyone selling their property during January and February 2019. Nundah’s Paralympic Gold Medalist Inspires Students Nundah local and Paralympic gold medalist, Simon Patmore, has finished a speaking tour of several Brisbane schools to discuss goalsetting, bullying and resilience. Simon, who won gold and bronze in snowboarding events at the Pyeong Change Paralympic Games this year, broke a 16-year gold medal drought for Australia and became the first Australian male athlete to win medals at both the summer and winter Paralympic Games. Simon attended St. Patrick’s College’s leadership retreat in October where he talked to year 11 students about resilience and leadership. Andrew Pashley, House Dean and Teacher at St. Patrick’s College, said the students responded very positively to Simon’s visit. “As an Old Boy of the College, Simon had an immediate connection with the boys but this connection was further strengthened by Simon’s engaging presentation,” says Andrew.
“Through the telling of his personal story, both as a past student and as an incredibly successful sportsman, Simon was able to provide his own perspective on the challenges of leadership.” Simon also visited year 6 students at Brisbane northside schools to discuss resilience and strategies for transition as they move to senior schooling. “Moving to senior schooling can be a challenge for some students. I spoke to the students about ways to build their resilience and how to cope with the change from primary school to secondary school,” says Simon. “There is so much potential in the students that I visited. I can’t wait to see them achieve their dreams, just like I have.” Simon Patmore | www.simonpatmore.com.au /simonpatmoreathlete | /simon.patmore

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE
We Care Week
Thank-You As we come to the end of another very busy year at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Brisbane North Community Legal Service, the staff and Committee would like to say a big thank-you to those individuals and businesses that supported the Centre in making a difference over the last 12 months.
We would like to give special thanks to everyone in Nundah and its surrounding community, who have provided so much ongoing support to the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre. Over the year we have had businesses, community leaders, and individuals provide support and assistance with many of our activities and events, including the Nundah Village Street Festival, Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, Community Christmas Party, Culture in the Kitchen, food relief and emergency assistance program, and the Family Support Program. Local businesses have also played a significant role in supporting the Centre and we would like to particularly acknowledge the Norris Motor Group Inc, who have supported our food relief program throughout the year and have donated milk, tea, coffee and biscuits each week so we can continue to offer a welcoming cuppa to all who attend our Centre. Also a huge thank-you to Nundah Now Inc, who held a very successful fundraiser at Platform 14 to raise much-needed funds for our Domestic Violence and Family Law Legal Clinic. Thank you to our local representatives, Adam Allan, Councillor for Northgate Ward; Leanne Linard, Member for Nudgee; Tim Nicholls, Member for Clayfield; and Wayne Swan, Federal Member for Lilley. All of our local representatives have been great champions of the Centre and we greatly appreciate their recognition of the valued role we play in our local community. We would also like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to all of the volunteers at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Community Legal Service. Volunteers continue to play a very significant role at the Centre and, without the commitment of their time, skills and creativity, the many programs offered would not be available. Finally, thank-you to Ben Tibben and the team at Loving Nundah, who very generously donate two professionally edited pages of the Loving Nundah Magazine to the organisation in each issue.

NUNDAH
We Care Week was held in Nundah and its surrounding suburbs from the 5th to the 11th November. Founded by Sonny and Leisa Pascoe, from the Majestic Church, We Care Week was developed to ‘Show Love, Give Hope and Inspire Faith.’ During the week, Sonny, Leisa and the team completed a number of community engagement projects, including two at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre: a Pamper Day and a Pantry Fitout. The Pamper Day was held at the Centre on Friday, 9 November, and many of the clients who had sought assistance through the Family Support Program clients were treated to facials, manicures, and pampering. Beautiful food was served as the ladies were treated like goddesses. Koko Hair and Beauty, situated next door to the centre volunteered and donated their time to treat the women with free hair services to finish off their makeovers. These women walked away feeling very spoilt. The second project completed was the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre’s Pantry Fitout. The Pantry is a fairly newly formed initiative at the centre that aims to store food and meals for those presenting at the centre that are homeless or at risk of homelessness. However the physical space used to house the donations was lacking
sensible and sufficient storage solutions. By providing materials, supply and labour, the Majestic Church helped the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre efficiently store and organise food supplies by way of building open shelving, cabinets and cupboards.
We Care Week is all about establishing a community engagement platform where locals care for locals simply by identifying needs within the community and drawing on each other’s time, resources and finances and in believing that togetherness builds a stronger, safer and more successful community. There were many individuals and groups that helped to make We Care Week a huge success and we would like to thank all of the corporate businesses and providing partners that donated time, finance and resources, in particular CDM Maintenance, Bunnings Warehouse and Coffee Club Nundah. A very special thank you to Sonny and Leisa and all the members of the Majestic Church, who made such a difference at the Centre and for many of the people we work with each day.

Seeking Donations
Earn Money by Recycling
The Christmas period can be a difficult time and one of significant financial distress for people. At the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre we regularly see individuals and families in need of financial assistance and food relief. We are seeking donations of non-perishable food items and toiletries so that we can restock our storage cupboard and pantry in time for Christmas. If you would like to assist, please drop off any items to the Centre between 9am and 4.30pm, Monday to Thursday before Tuesday, 18th December.
There’s cash in your containers – a newly introduced recycling program is offering 10 cents for every eligible container.
With Queensland holding the record for the lowest recycling rates in Australia (at around 44%), Containers for Change is hoping to improve recycling numbers and reduce the amount of containers being put into landfill. Residents are encouraged to bring eligible beverage containers (including soft drink cans, small juice and milk bottles, beer bottles and plastic water bottles) to collection points to receive their refund. For full details on what containers are eligible and how to register for an account, visit www.containersforchange.com.au
Eligible local collection points: • 915 Nudgee Road, Banyo • 195 Tufnell Road, Banyo • 46 Milway Street, Kedron • Shop 2, 8 Railway Pde, Geebung
