Award-Winning Patisserie Opens in Northgate Have a sweet tooth? Love artisan bread? Flour & Chocolate has opened – and it’s just a scone’s throw from Nundah. Flour & Chocolate has opened the second location of its award-winning patisserie in Northgate. The new store, located on Old Toombul Road, is bigger than its original Morningside location, with a larger kitchen space and outdoor seating for customers.
Owners: Kylie & Lachlan Scott
Since opening in January, the patisserie has proven popular with Brisbane northside locals, with a line-up of customers forming before the doors open in the morning. The opening of the second location has been in the works for many years by Flour & Chocolate owners, locals Lachlan and Kylie Scott. Lachlan starts most of his days in the kitchen before 2.30am and is excited to bring Flour & Chocolate’s range of decadent creations to Brisbane northsiders. With a huge array of products, including breads, cakes, tarts, puddings, donuts, cupcakes, quiches, sandwiches, sausage rolls and croissants, the resident pastry chefs often create new flavours based on seasonal availability and their creative instincts. Flour & Chocolate Northgate is open Thursday to Saturday, 6.30am to 2pm and Sunday 7am to 1pm. CYCLING with Nick Jones-Parry from The Joint Nundah
The Science of Cycling Ensuring a cyclist is comfortable on the bike is essential to cycling, and is a great way to improve performance and reduce risk of injury and pain. Whether you are a beginner or an elite cyclist, a bike fit will help keep you on the bike for longer. A bike fit is conducted by taking body measurements to uncover any asymmetries as well as looking at the cyclist on the bike. A bike fit is important as it has the potential to reduce the chance of injury and improve any existing strains while improving performance.

The most common injuries in cycling are knee and lower back pain. Home Style Cooking Have you tried Lemaire’s Bistro yet? Located outside Kmart at Toombul Shopping Centre, they are open for breakfast and lunch. Lemaire’s Bistro Toombul Shopping Centre /lemairesbistro
Recent research has shown an association between poor biomechanics during cycling and knee injuries. Additionally, increased lumbar flexion on the bike can correlate with lower back pain in cyclists. Our Physiotherapists have undergone further post-graduate training in bike fitting and cycling analysis and can design an individualised program based on what is found during the bike fit. A New Year, A New Beginning...
Make 2019 the Year of a Performance Goal
Last year we spoke about change. This year there is little difference for those wishing to improve their situation or lifestyle. In property terms, are you ready to jump headfirst into a renovation or transition to a more suitable home? Wouldn’t it be prudent to seek some sound advice on the financial impact this change may have?
Too many health and fitness chasers start their year off the wrong way, by chasing numbers on a scale or how they look in the mirror. Doing this only sets you up for failure as you may struggle with motivation and a lack of direction with training programs. Performance goals give your training both direction and structure, as well as the added enjoyment and motivation as you see your strength and fitness improve, typically faster than your body composition.
Where do you place your trust? If you’re feeling unwell - see a physician. If you have car problems - see a mechanic. If you’re flying out of town - you need a certified pilot. If you want to understand property values - talk to your Loving Nundah real estate experts!
Examples of performance goals include: • Deadlift 5 Reps of 100kg • Improve range of motion in a squat • Improve 1500m run time by 10 seconds
With a copy of Your Property Guide from us, you’ll have a thorough understanding of how your desired transition should payoff. Text Property Guide to 0427 734 743 or email andrew.emms@atrealty.com.au to receive your copy and get your property goals off to the right start in 2019!
There are so many avenues of performance that can be explored in order to keep training fun and enjoyable. And, in order to achieve these goals, your body is forced to adapt to the stimulus you’re providing, meaning that body composition will change as an indirect result of your program.
For more information get in touch with Andrew Emms (0427 734 743) and Mark Roemermann (0413 877 230).

Learning to Swim - It’s More Important Than You Think Queensland parents know that teaching their children to swim is a must. Not only is it essential for their safety, but also for social inclusion as they get older. Whether it’s hitting the beach, lakeside family camping spots, or local waterparks, friends and families frequently spend time together bonding over water-based activities. Ideally, children should be safely introduced to water prior to age 3, as it can take a number of years to develope sufficient skills and confidence to develop. Making sure your child is confident in the water by the time they start school is really important. Most schools offer various swimming programs and events, including swimming carnivals and water-based team sports these all rely on a basic ability to swim.
Aquatic Achievers will be opening a brand new centre in Wavell Heights in March 2019. The purpose-built learn to swim centre caters for babies through to school-age children, with registrations now open. They are also offering their free “Learn to Live” water safety program to schools and early learning centres across Wavell Heights and surrounding suburbs, teaching children water safety fundamentals in a fun and engaging way outside the pool. For more information on the program, or on starting lessons, simply get in contact. Choosing Quality Care for Your Children – What Matters for Early Education When it comes to making a decision about your child’s early education, there are many factors that will influence decision-making. We are fortunate in Australia to have a robust quality assurance system that can guide parents, but given that the quality of care and education varies considerably across services, it is useful for parents to be well versed in the fundamental criteria for quality.
Other factors Of course, there are numerous other factors that are important to the overall quality of a children’s program:
Leadership We know that the quality of child care provided is most influenced by leadership within the service (Rodd, 1994). The presence of well qualified and experienced early childhood professionals to guide practice, consult with educators and oversee program implementation is arguably one of the most critical factors impacting on the quality of the service provided.
• Cleanliness and Upkeep – is the building and equipment well maintained? Is the equipment in good order?
Quality and Qualification go hand in hand It is well established that higher teacher qualifications are positively correlated with higher quality in early childhood education and care (ACECQA, 2018). This means services that prioritise the employment of highly trained early childhood personnel – over and above the requirement of the law, are most likely to achieve greater quality within their programs.
• Educator Wellbeing – do the educators enjoy a stable, good-quality working environment?
• Health & Safety – what policies are in place to protect the health and safety of children? Does the service implement an approach to immunisation that supports latest research? • Resources – does the centre appear well resourced? Is there adequate, age appropriate equipment?
Quality Interactions Is there evidence of warm and intimate interactions between educators and children? Are educators engaged with the children, sitting at their level and listening intently to their conversations? Or, are educators aloof and disengaged, simply supervising to prevent altercations and injuries?
Habitat Early Learning offers quality early education services in North Brisbane. To find out more about your child’s early childhood education with Habitat visit www.habitatlearning.qld.edu.au

Construction On Track For Three Nundah Village The final stage of Circa Nundah Village will be completed by October. The $270 million Circa Nundah Village is on track to be completed by October this year, with construction on the third and final stage already more than half way along. Apartment building THREE Nundah Village is the final building in the Circa Nundah Village masterplan, developed over the past seven years in the heart of Nundah by award-winning urban renewal specialist Property Solutions. Designed to complement the existing shops along Sandgate Road and surrounding areas, Circa Nundah Village aims to expand the village-like atmosphere that was created when the bypass moved traffic away from the shopping strip. Locals are already enjoying Circa Nundah’s revamped supermarket and retail space, with a mix of retailers attracted by the development, as well as the many flow-on benefits from a new commercial office building and three residential buildings already completed.
Once completed, the final apartment building THREE Nundah Village will add 120 spacious one and two-bedroom apartments to the award winning Circa Nundah Village development, offering stylish inner-city living for residents and a real sense of style and sophistication to Nundah. Construction company Tomkins is on track to deliver THREE Nundah Village by October, weather permitting. The company has forged a reputation for delivering landmark projects of the highest quality within development schedules and THREE Nundah will be no exception. Property Solutions Joint Managing Director David Blanck said he was happy to see construction on the final stage of the Circa Nundah Village progressing on schedule. “Now that we are completing our final stage, we are seeing that our development really contributes to the village atmosphere here in Nundah,” he said. “What we’ve create here is affordable, quality apartments with a sense of community and place in a prime location within a major growth suburb.” Sales for THREE Nundah Village have been strong with only 30 apartments remaining for sale.

HOMEWARE FINDS Are you ready for the next Home Collective Markets? We’ve had a sneak peek and picked some of our favourites that will be there on the day.
The Art of Table Décor with Tina Leveridge Decorating a table can make a difference to the cohesion of your interior spaces. Getting the balance right is crucial, especially when a home is being viewed. Achieve a stunning result by using these four décor elements: A plant: Plants create a living space - however, if you’re not quite blessed with a green thumb, opt for a low-water plant such as a cactus.
Kim Aitken Ceramics Add a splash of colour to your home with beautiful ceramics from Kim Aitken Ceramics. Each piece is individually hand crafted using Australian clay. /kim_aitken
Kylie Jane Designs Love abstract art? Kylie Jane Designs has a gorgeous range of original artwork canvases and limited edition prints available in a variety of colours and designs. & /kyliejanedesigns
A bowl or tray: Current trends lean towards wooden designs with crisp edges; however, go with what you think will work for your space. A candle: Candles are a great item to use no matter what type of table. Select a scent that matches the season (i.e. a spicy blend for winter or a citrus blend for summer). Sculpture: A small- to medium-sized sculpture that tells a story will give character to any space. Decorating a table involves a bit of experimentation to see what works best for your chosen space; however, once you’ve mastered it, you’ll be applying it to every table in your house. Seeking further design tips to enhance the visual aspects of your house? Contact Tina, home stager and real estate agent, for more information. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE
Donations Needed Our Cupboards Are Bare! Over the Christmas period and since reopening in early January, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre has been overwhelmed with requests for assistance from families and individuals. The Centre now finds themselves with very limited stock and are seeking further donations of the following items: • Pantry items (including tinned food, rice, pasta, sauces, cereals, biscuits, long life milk etc. All items need to be in date). • Baby items (in particular nappies, wipes, baby food and unopened tins of formula). • Good-quality second-hand women’s and men’s clothing (please ensure they are clean with no stains or rips. All sizes needed). Donations are gratefully received between 9.30am – 4.30pm, Monday to Thursday. Donations are accepted outside office hours by calling 3260 6820. Donations cannot be left at the front door when the Centre is closed as items can often not be used due to health and safety issues. Thank you to everyone who has already donated to the food relief program. The assistance has helped a number of individuals and families with food and toiletries when it has been most needed.
Neighbourhood Centre Community Kitchen Upgrade The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre has received $45,500 from the Dignity First Fund for a much-needed upgrade to the community kitchen.
The Dignity First Fund provides one-off grants to support new and innovative ideas from non-government providers that aim to: • prevent and reduce homelessness • assist people experiencing homelessness to live with dignity. These projects deliver a range of essential services that make a real difference for people in our community who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Each week volunteers use the community kitchen to provide meals and community lunch to people attending the Centre for social inclusion and food relief programs.
The upgrade will allow the Centre to prepare and cook 50-60 meals at a time and greatly assist in supporting people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Thanks to the Queensland Government Department of Housing and Public Works for the grant to make this happen.
The Brisbane North Community Legal Service It can be easy for individuals to feel lost in the complicated legal process. Private lawyers can be expensive, and often the government legal assistance has limited resources. Despite a need for legal assistance, many cannot access affordable legal help. The Brisbane North Community Legal Service (BNCLS), help breaks the cycle of hardship and despair by providing all in the community, but especially the most disadvantaged and marginalised of Brisbane’s North, with access to justice through a free, quality, local and accessible legal service. This free legal service is provided at the long-established weekly Wednesday drop-in advice service staffed by dedicated volunteer lawyers. Many of these volunteers have specific expertise, including a senior generalist lawyer and a female family lawyer in the Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic, specifically for women who have experienced domestic violence. The Wednesday Evening Drop-in Service is staffed by our Legal Service Administrator (Jo Money), Volunteer Solicitors and Students and opens at 6.15pm but Intake Sheets are taken from 5.30pm. No appointment is necessary and clients are generally seen in order of arrival subject to availability of a Solicitor with relevant experience.
The Daytime Generalist Service and Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic are seen by appointment, by calling 3260 6820. Like other community legal centres, service is not means-tested and takes a holistic collaborative approach, providing effective information, advice and practical referrals to specialist legal, nonlegal and multi-disciplinary services. However - donations are always appreciated and a receipt will be provided for donations over $2.00, which are tax deductible. Lawyers and students wishing to volunteer their services to BNCLS are always welcome. The BNCLS also provides community legal education, especially to school, seniors and other groups. For further information contact Jo Money on 3260 6820. The BNCLS looks forward to assisting our community during 2019.

All books and magazines at the bookstore are donated by the community, the Brisbane City Council Libraries and the State Library. There is a huge variety of books available, including non-fiction, fiction, travel, recipe books, biographies, Manga comics and children’s books. Spend time browsing the shelves, reading books and chatting to the volunteers who run the bookshop. With the shelves being updated daily you never know what treasure you will find!
