Best Salon Newcomer Nomination Northgate hairdresser, Co. Studio Hairdressing has been nominated for Best Salon Newcomer of the Year in the 2019 Australian Hair Industry Awards. Anthea and Bree opened their Northgate salon just 10 months ago. “As clichéd as it sounds, we are really just so overPictured: Mikaela, Anthea and Bree whelmed and excited to be nominated as finalists. It from Co. Studio Hairdressing is very easy in the day-to-day running of the salon to forget to celebrate little wins, so it was really lovely to take a moment to look back on all that we had achieved before our first birthday,” says Anthea. The team will find out if they have won Best Salon Newcomer of the Year at the Gala Night at The Star, Gold Coast on the 28 April. Co. Studio Hairdressing 2/28 Ridge Street, Northgate |

New Cosmetic Business Now Open in Northgate After many years working in the corporate world, Michaela Hartwig dreamt of owning her own business in a field she loved, so she could assist others. Michaela, along with her brother, Nick, and friend, Morgan Harris (of The Morgan Collaborative), took the leap in December 2016 and launched CST Direct: Cosmetic Skin Therapies. CST Direct offers clients cosmetic procedures including anti-wrinkle injections, lip fillers, dermal fillers, jawline slimming injections, and fat-dissolving injections, which can assist with areas that clients feel self-conscious about or wish to improve.
Driven by her desire to provide clients with the best results, Michaela and the team have invested in the latest technologies in cosmetic injectables, and work with an experienced team to deliver the best possible results. “Not all injectable clinics are the same,” says Michaela. “Our new patient consultations are an hour long so that clients have that one-on-one time with our registered nurse and prescribing doctor, who take the time to listen to your goals, do an in-depth analysis of your facial structure and symmetry, with ample treatment time.” “Getting any kind of cosmetic procedure can be nerve-wracking, but our team will make you feel comfortable and safe,” says Michaela. Michaela is seeing an increase in snatched jawlines, lip augmentation and chin fillers in 2019. “Snatched jawlines are becoming a lot more popular as they can give people a more youthful appearance by filling in loose skin,” says Michaela. “Lip augmentation is very popular with our younger clients and chin fillers are popular to elongate the face and create the V shape many people want to achieve.” CST Direct has opened a new location at 1/28 Ridge St, Northgate, next door to Co. Studio Hairdressing. CST Direct: Cosmetic Skin Therapies 1/28 Ridge Street, Northgate | www.cstdirect.com

Developing Men of Action St Patrick’s College, located on the cliffs of Shorncliffe overlooking Moreton Bay, offers an holistic educational opportunity for young men in Years 5 to 12 from across Brisbane. Many of the young men travel by train to Shorncliffe station, which is a short 500m walk from the College, providing a safe and direct travel to and from school.
As a Catholic boys’ school in the Edmund Rice tradition, St Patrick’s College understands the complexity and intensity of boyhood, and intentionally focuses on developing and growing the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical and cultural dimensions of young men’s lives. This strong ethical foundation provides an education that develops boys into men, not just students into scholars. The College’s educators are specialists in boy-centred education and engage them more fully in their learning by focusing on the interests and talents unique to boys when planning and executing daily class time. St Patrick’s College’s broad educational opportunities, combined with a comprehensive co-curricular program, help students uncover where their passion lies.
Visit St Patrick’s College at their upcoming Open Day on Tuesday, 28 May to see first-hand why it is such a special place. St Patrick’s College | 60 Park Parade, Shorncliffe Ph. 3631 9000 | www.stpatricks.qld.edu.au

WOMEN’S HEALTH with Sarah Belcher from The Joint Nundah
Seeking Treatment for Incontinence Incontinence is a common condition affecting nearly 50% of all women throughout their lives. Despite this being so common, most women do not seek help due to embarrassment or the belief that incontinence is a natural consequence of aging or childbirth. Incontinence is a term used to describe involuntary loss of urine from the bladder or faeces or wind from the bowel. The two most common forms are stress and urge incontinence. Many people associate incontinence with menopause and childbirth; however, other risk factors include neurological conditions, participation in repetitive high impact sport and chronic respiratory conditions. Although common, incontinence is by no means normal and should be treated by consulting your GP or Women’s Health Physiotherapist. The type and severity dictate the method of treatment, which can include a combination of lifestyle/behaviour modifications, physiotherapy to strengthen or better control your pelvic floor muscles, medication and possibly surgery. If you are having issues with incontinence, pelvic pain or are pre/postnatal and needing some exercise advice, I am happy to assist you. Want to know more? Property Styling - Tips To Help You Sell Your Home for More If there’s one golden rule to styling a property for sale, it’s to take a step back and look at your property through the eyes of a potential buyer.
Is the furniture appropriate? It’s vital to consider the demographic of people wanting to move to your area and why, and develop a home styling plan to suit. Have you shown your home’s exterior some love? While property styling centres around the interior spaces of a home, you need to consider the curb appeal and what potential buyers will be seeing as they turn into the driveway. Does the house have a welcoming atmosphere? If potential buyers feel welcome at your property they’ll be more likely to feel an emotional connection, which can, in turn, inspire offers and optimise your final sales price. We trust the insight and services of Furnish & Finish Property Styling, contact today on 1300 387 647 or text STYLING to 0427 734 743 for a free consultation. The Benefits of Personal Training Keeping fit and healthy is hard work and we are very good at avoiding any such work. We outsource so much these days, including washing the car, doing our taxes, walking our dogs, etc. I’m writing this while enjoying a Blockhouse breakfast that I didn’t make myself. But when it comes to your fitness, you have to do the hard work yourself. Outsourcing health and fitness isn’t going to happen anytime soon; however, we can get help along the way. If you find that you lack the motivation to exercise, a Personal Trainer (PT) can definitely point you in the right direction. We all know that a PT can set you up a fitness program, but a GREAT PT will help you set fitness goals, track your progress, push you further than you might by yourself, and above all, help you stay motivated. Whether you prefer one-on-one PT in a gym for that personal touch, or an outdoor training group for that team-bonding experience, having a trainer is definitely key to staying motivated and reaping the benefits of your health.

Leading the Way in Modern Dentistry Brisbane Dental Studio, located in Clayfield, offers traditional care to patients, while using the latest digital technology. With an experienced team of dentists, including Dr Hayden Stewart, Dr Ryan Nuttall, Dr Glenn Croft, Dr Sophie Ho, Dr Sam Ohri and Dr Fozia Yaqoob, Brisbane Dental Studio’s goal is to build long-term relationships with their patients. Assisting the team of dentists is the friendly dental hygiene team, comprised of Lizzy Horsfall, Jarrod Chambers, Monica Sehnert, Priya Holland, Georgia Ladas and Abby McCahhery.
With services delivered in a relaxed and modern environment, patients can enjoy an experience that is welcoming, comfortable and informative. Brisbane Dental Studio prides itself on embracing the latest technologies in dentistry, giving clients the best possible treatment options. Digital impression scanners have now replaced traditional impressions, which means in most cases patients do not require a wet, sloppy mouthful of material. Digital smile design has made aesthetic treatments easily predictable and accurate, with very little need for adjustments. More complex smile cases, incorporating Invisalign, implants, veneers or crowns can be treatment planned in the digital world, allowing patients and dentist complete control of the final aesthetic outcome. These new technologies allow patients to undergo less invasive treatments, which can assist people who may be nervous about visiting the dentist. The team at Brisbane Dental Studio is highly sympathetic to the needs of nervous patients and are happy to discuss treatment options that can reduce pain and calm nerves. Brisbane Dental Studio is located on Sandgate and Alexandra Roads in Clayfield and has convenient parking and wheelchair access to the practice.

There’s No Place Like Nundah Local Brisbane band, The Double Happiness, have released their new single, which has a special focus on Nundah. The Double Happiness is a band made of two couples, Kristin and Pete and Meg and Simon, with similar tastes in music and a love for the history of Brisbane.
Their latest single, No Place Like Nundah, came about from a misheard conversation. A friend was referencing Dorothy’s iconic line from the Wizard of Oz, and Kristin thought she’d said “There’s no place like Nundah.” This brought up a discussion about the Brisbane of the past, and the landmarks that have changed, including the fountain from King George Square, the Brisbane trams and Cloudland, which was knocked down in the still of night in 1982. This discussion evolved into the new single, No Place Like Nundah. Kristin and the band love how Nundah has grown over the years. “Nundah has become a gorgeous inner-suburban village in recent years. It’s growing up in a similar Band Photo: by Kim Senior at KindleVision Artwork Photo: No Place Like Nundah single artwork fashion to Brisbane as a taken on the corner of Olive St and Park Rd, Nundah by whole, and has found its Aaron Sammutt at Double A Creative identity,” says Kristin. Banyo’s Triple Eight Race Engineering Team prepares for Bathurst 1000 Triple Eight Race Engineering is one of the most successful teams in Australian Motor Sport and is the only V8 Supercar team to call Brisbane home. Banyo’s Triple Eight Race Engineering Workshop
Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Pit Crew in Action
Based in Banyo, Triple Eight Race Engineering, home to Red Bull Holden Racing, has had great success since forming in 2003, winning the Supercars Championship eight times and the Bathurst 1000 seven times. Currently working with race drivers Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen, the team is already preparing for the biggest and most high-profile event on the motors sports calendar – the Bathurst 1000. Held in October, Bathurst 1000 is watched around the world by fans, racing teams and racing drivers.
Being the only Brisbane-based V8 Supercar team does come with its challenges. “The main challenges we face being based in Brisbane are logistics. The first six races are all down south,” says Mark Dutton, Team Manager of Triple Eight Race Engineering. “As a result we are faced with a lot more travel than other teams, most of which are based in Victoria. But, the advantage of living in Brisbane is the weather – who wouldn’t want to live in Brisbane?” See the Triple Eight Race Engineering team in action at their upcoming races in April and May – the Phillip Island SuperSprint, Perth SuperNight, and the Winton SuperSprint. Nundah Village Dental talk children’s teeth The team at Nundah Village Dental recommends your child’s first visit is from 6-12 months, when the first tooth erupts. Why do baby teeth need fillings? Decay in baby teeth is common and needs to be treated as soon as possible. They are used to hold space for adult teeth until 12-14 years old. Leaving decay or removing a tooth early can lead to infection, pain or future orthodontic problems. When can my child brush their teeth alone? Tooth brushing is a fine motor skill and often children are unable to brush well until the age of 9. If your child can’t tie their shoelaces, often they don’t have the dexterity to brush well either. Surprised by some of these answers? If your child is due for an examination, Nundah Village Dental offers a heavily reduced fee for children’s appointments and welcomes children eligible under the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme. Please call Megan, Mel, Jess or Linda to book an appointment. Nundah Village Dental Shop 6/1231 Sandgate Rd, Nundah Ph. 3260 6200 www.nundahdental.com.au

Latest Local Upgrades My focus remains on delivering for the residents and businesses of Northgate Ward to make it a great place to live, work and play. This includes a number of park upgrades delivered in the first quarter of this year to provide green spaces for the community to enjoy. Maggs Street Park, Wavell Heights has been upgraded with new gym equipment, shelter and an electric BBQ installed, followed soon by a playground and shade cloth. Wilhelmine Kruger Park, Nudgee had a new shelter with table, seats and an electric BBQ installed. An electric BBQ was installed in Banyo Memorial Park, Banyo. Boyd Park, Nundah now has a new full court basketball court with lighting. I continue to be highly accessible through attendance at community events and, of course, direct engagement with residents.
Clean, Green Widdop Street Intersection Upgrade and Sustainable I hosted my fourth annual ‘Clean Up Australia at Toombul Day’ team at Nudgee Beach. Pleasingly, there was less rubbish than previous years, though we still managed to collect a lot of rubbish. It was fantastic to see families joining in with the cleanup. Thank you to everyone who participated. Council’s clean, green and sustainable blog provides useful information to help our residents live a greener lifestyle. Council’s environment and waste minimisation initiatives keep our city liveable and sustainable for our children, and their children to follow. The blog has useful, everyday tips to help you learn about green and waste initiatives, keeping our local areas cleaner, greener and more sustainable. Brisbane City Council and Endeavour Foundation operate a tip shop at 27A Prosperity Place, Geebung. Selling quality used, recycled and second-hand products salvaged from landfill, it is open every weekend from 8am to 4pm.
The intersection at the Widdop Street entrance to Toombul Shopping Centre has been a challenging and dangerous intersection for some time. The intersection is used by motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Entering and exiting the shopping centre can be difficult, with over 12,500 cars using the intersection daily. Safe crossing of Widdop Street in this location can also be challenging. Consultation on this project has now been completed and construction will start shortly. There will be some disruption as this project is delivered and I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. Help Our Worms Eat Your Food Scraps If you, or someone you know, has an old worm farm that you are no longer using, would you be interested in donating it to the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre, to help compost the huge amount of food scraps we receive each week in our compost hub? Out of the 21 compost hubs in Brisbane, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre is the second-most used, and we need extra help from worm farms, to cope with the huge volume of scraps we are currently receiving. If you are able to help, please either phone or message the Neighbourhood Centre garden/compost hub volunteer Sue on 0412 678 597, or feel free to drop off your worm farm to the garden.

Nundah Lions Club – Celebrates 50 Years Fifty years ago, on 5 March 1969, The Nundah Lions Club was formed. The Lions Club of Sandgate was flourishing, and a past district Governor realised the need for another club to assist the community on Brisbane’s northside. The first President of the Nundah Lions Club was Lloyd Gillies, and the initial Club Dinners were held at the Gallery Restaurant at Toombul Shoppingtown, with a quality meal provided for $1.50 a head.
In the last fifty years, the Nundah Lions Club has assisted the community with youth development programs, disaster relief, community events, assistance for the disabled and building community infrastructure.
International Women’s Day International Women’s Day, held on the 8th of March, is a part of the movement of women’s rights and is a day that was created to celebrate women and all their achievements. This year’s theme was Balance for Better, which focuses on acknowledging, challenging and decreasing the gap between women and men’s rights – to strive for equality. This year we held our event on the 6th of March, which was a morning tea and candle-making activity for our female volunteers and clients of the centre. We had a great turn-out, with 19 women attending the event. Our aim was to bring a group of diverse women together to celebrate and enjoy some time together. Overall the day went really well and we enjoyed celebrating this special day with this group of women.
The Nundah Lions Club now meets at the Norths Devils Leagues Club on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. The Club has 19 members and welcomes more of the community to join. The Club is celebrating its 50 Years with a lunch at the Norths Devils Leagues Club on Saturday, 13 April, at $40 per person. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Pat Carbis on 0417 708 262 as soon as possible. Past members are especially welcome.
