Toombul Shopping Centre provides jobs for people with disabilities Toombul Shopping Centre has partnered with local organisation Nundah Community Enterprises Cooperative (NCEC) to provide job opportunities for people in the local community who have struggled with employment due to intellectual disabilities or mental illness. The NCEC was formed in 1998 to create meaningful work opportunities. The NCEC manages local cafe, Espresso Train, and NCEC Parks and Maintenance. Through these businesses, the NCEC employs people with disabilities, building their confidence and giving purpose. Toombul Shopping Centre will work with NCEC to provide long-term employment opportunities in landscaping and maintenance around the centre. Michael Cherry from Brisbane’s north says the opportunity will be life changing for him.

“This job opportunity is very important for me. It means I can work with friends, have money to be able to live and, most importantly, I will feel like I’m part of the community.” NCEC Coordinator, Richard Warner, says the partnership will open more opportunities for people with disabilities. “This is an exciting development for NCEC. Being local allows us to connect more readily with our staff with disabilities, their families and networks of support, which is key to our success in creating long-term job outcomes.”

Are you due for your next check-up? Is it time to visit the dentist? If it’s been six months or more since your last visit, it’s important to book your next appointment now. Regular dental checks help maintain healthy teeth and gums, maintain any existing work and prevent any future issues.

Many dental issues don’t become visible or cause pain until they are in more advanced stages. A qualified dentist can see the early signs of disease and work with you to fix the problem.

Your dentist can advise you on how often you need a check-up, as it depends on factors such as your age, health and dental history. Having a dental examination and professional clean twice a year is generally recommended to reduce dental problems you may have in the future. Nundah Village Dental, which has been part of the Nundah community since 1981, offers extended trading hours, including early morning, evening and weekend appointments to cater for the local community. New patients are always welcome. Call Linda, Megan, Jess or Mel to book your next dental appointment.

Kelli Martin – Nundah’s Dancing CEO

with Steve Collins from The Joint Nundah

Kelli Martin has once again swapped the courtroom for the ballroom and raised a staggering amount for the annual Dancing CEO’s fundraising event. Kelli, CEO of KLM Solicitors in Nundah, took part in the 2017 event and this year joined fellow lawyers, Genevieve Dee and Clarissa Rayward, to form an All Stars Dancing team to raise funds for the Women’s Legal Service.

Together, the team raised over $58,000 and were awarded the Spirit of Dancing CEO’s award for their electrifying performance. “I was honoured to stand, dance and celebrate with these two gorgeous and inspiring ladies, Genevieve Dee and Clarissa Rayward at this years Dancing CEO’s fundraiser,” says Kelli. “Together we are ensuring that when a woman calls Women’s Legal Service, often in absolute crisis, her call is answered. Together we are saving lives,” says Kelli. This year, the participating CEO’s raised $440,000 for the Women’s Legal Service, which provides free legal and welfare help to Queensland women and their children who are at risk from domestic violence. Dealing with the ‘mid-season niggle’ With the sporting year now well under way, thousands of locals are stepping onto the field or court every week. From the kids, playing to keep fit and make friends, to weekend warriors, to the athletes among us, we’ve all experienced the ‘mid-season niggle’. This ‘mid-season niggle’ comes in many shapes and sizes. From the ‘first few steps of a run foot pain’, the ‘next day knee pain’, the hamstrings and lower backs that ‘just need to be stretched out’ and the shoulders that just don’t like ‘that one position’. Niggles are a sign from your body that it’s not quite keeping up. If left without making some changes, they often lead to an injury or problem that needs time away from sport or work. A simple solution can be to monitor your training and playing volumes and intensities, then adjust down for a week or two. This is also the time to get some targeted rehabilitation under your belt to stop these little niggles turning into something more. Need to get on top of your ‘mid-season niggle’? Book an appointment with our team to discuss rehab strategies, training load and strength and conditioning classes. EXPERT ADVICE

PROPERTY

HEALTH AND FITNESS

with Andrew Emms and Mark Roemermann from @realty

with SARGE Jamieson from SARGE’s BootCamp & Fitness Nundah

Now that the election is over... what happens with the real estate marketplace?

You can’t outrun a bad diet

The number of homes for sale and interest rates are at record lows. So the time to sell is now, or at least as soon as you can. Here’s why:

If you want to get fitter, do more exercise; however, if you want to lose weight, you need to eat better. It is widely suggested in the health and fitness industry that exercise only accounts for 20% of a weight loss lifestyle, where as healthier eating accounts for 80%.

lections tend to freeze the economy and the real estate market (people E prefer to wait and see what happens before making big financial decisions)

uyers are back and they’re hungry (low supply volumes + a sense of B economic stability = increased buyer activity)

Interest rates are low and may drop further (buyers may be able to borrow a little more for the right home)

I nvestor activity is likely to improve (the renewed certainty about negative gearing and capital gains tax regulations will instill confidence in many investors)

The Thermic Effect of Food is the energy your body burns to digest the food that you eat, so the more times you eat per day, the more energy you will burn through digestion. Furthermore, protein takes 2-3 times more energy to digest than fat or carbohydrates.

uyers who waited to see what would happen have no more delaying B excuses and are ready to buy (with the election behind us, there’s nothing holding them back and no reason to wait)

So if two similar people consume 8700kJ per day, the first eats two larger meals of mostly carbs and fat, and the second person eats a higher protein diet over 5-6 meals per day, which person will burn more fat?

Is now a good time to sell? It is if you want to enjoy the post-election momentum. Ask us to formulate the best plan for you. Andrew Emms (0427 734 743) and Mark Roemermann (0413 877 230).

Metabolism is the rate that your body burns energy and this rate can be increased by the amount of muscle you have, how much you exercise, and how often you eat. Increasing all these factors will help you lose that unwanted fat, but eating better more often will benefit the most.

To find out the answer to this and any other health and fitness-related questions, contact SARGE via /Nundah4012 or 0455 510 051.

Latest Business News from DFK Hirn Newey Without the anticipated change in government coming to fruition, Australian businesses and individuals can expect a year ahead of ‘business as usual’. Prior to the election, the Australian Government announced a relatively small raft of legislative proposals as part of the Federal Budget, and will look to implement these when parliament resumes later in the year. The most popular announcements were the proposed tax cuts for individuals and the extension of the instant asset write-off for businesses. The later change here (which has already been legislated) was twofold, with assets costing $30,000 or less being instantly deducted and the concession being extended to businesses earning up to $50 million. This concession will run to 30 June 2020, representing an opportunity to bring forward asset acquisitions. Less popular will be the introduction of Single Touch Payroll (STP) from 1 July 2019, which will require all employers to digitally report their employees’ pay details to the ATO each pay run. While the ATO is looking to provide some affordable options, this change represents a perfect opportunity to consider updating your accounting software to take advantage of the greater efficiencies available through cloudbased technology. As we approach 30 June, it’s also a perfect time for business owners to review their finances, and consider

what worked well and what could have been improved.

We recommend that business owners, in conjunction with their accountant, start planning for the year ahead and create forecasts and budgets for their business. When coupled with real-time reporting, having a budget allows you to identify what is and isn’t working and adapt quickly. This can allow you to

make changes such as updating your pricing strategy, delaying purchases to preserve cash, or even just helping you pass the ‘sleep at night test’ by giving you confidence that everything is on track. We wish you continued business success for the new financial year and welcome you to contact our office should you require any assistance. Making our community cleaner, greener and more sustainable

Love Food Hate Waste is coming to Nundah - FREE banana bread!

Complete the Six-week challenge with Laura Geitz

Residents of Brisbane are passionate about the environment and liveability of our city.

Brisbane City Council has joined the Love Food Hate Waste movement to help you avoid and reduce the amount of food thrown away in Brisbane landfill each year.

Did you know that Brisbane residents are throwing away $50 worth of food every week?

Brisbane has an enviable record as a clean, green and sustainable city, with Council being a 100% carbon-neutral organisation. I am a big fan of a number of the initiatives we are running to bring about behavioural change. Some of these initiatives include Love Food Hate Waste, 104 or More, the Green Waste Recycling Service, Green Heart Fairs and Brisbane Tip Shops, along with a range of free or low-cost workshops on gardening, composting etc. The dates for our annual suburb Kerbside Collection are now available.

Council’s Love Food Hate Waste team will be at Toombul Shopping Centre on Saturday, 22 June from 10am – 12pm offering free samples of banana bread made from rescued bananas and handy, practical tips on how you can reduce food waste at home. I will be at the stand handing out free banana bread, magnetic menu planners and shopping lists to kick-start your food waste-saving journey.

Jump on Council’s website or visit /Councillor.Allan for details.

As part of the Love Food Hate Waste movement, you are invited to join Council’s Six-week Food Waste Challenge with Laura Geitz to help reduce food waste, while saving time and money. Our Six-week Food Waste Challenge aims to help you understand more about food waste in your household and how you can make simple, positive changes to reduce the amount of food you throw away. You can jump into the challenge at any stage. To join, go to www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or contact the Northgate Ward Office for more information.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE

A Twilight Gathering – Nundah’s Long Table Dinner Nundah Now, in support of the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre, held a Twilight Gathering long table dinner to raise funds for the Centre’s Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic. The annual dinner was held at Platform 14 on the 30th March and was a sold-out event for the second year in a row. Unfortunately, wet weather did force the dinner to be held indoors, but attendees enjoyed a three-course native Australianthemed meal, catered by The Good Food Project. As the event was held during Earth Hour, the final course was enjoyed by candelight between 8.30pm – 9.30pm, and all non-essential lights were turned off. The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre would like to thank Nundah Now for sponsoring the event, with special thanks to Ben Tibben of Mozmo Creative and Loving Nundah. Thank you to the major

sponsors, Nudgee MP Leanne Linard and All Inn Brewing, who kindly donated all the beer for the evening. Thank you also to those who donated raffle prizes and event items, including Councillor Adam Allan, Norths Rugby League Club, Vessel Nundah, Nundah Farmers Markets, Moken, Artwork by David Burrows and Susie Mogridge and Bunnings Toombul. A special mention must also go to Nundah Neighbourhood Volunteer, Kandy McElligott of Natural-ly Gifted, who not only sourced all the flowers and foliage for the table decorations for free, but spent many hours prior to the evening creating the arrangements. Thank you to all the volunteers, staff, sponsors, raffle donors, caterers, entertainers and attendees for supporting the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre by making the night not only a great fundraising success but also a very enjoyable one.

The Injustice of Intimacy Podcast Series The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and the Brisbane North Community Legal Service have produced a new podcast series focusing on Intimate Partner Sexual Violence (IPSV). This project was a response to the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre’s work with women who accessed services through the Domestic Violence and Family Support Program and shared their struggles to understand the sexual violence that occurred in their intimate relationship and their frustrations in attempting to get the right help. The podcast series, which was produced with funding provided by Legal Aid Queensland’s Community Legal Education Collaboration Fund, was launched by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Hon Yvette D’ath at Qld Parliament House in May. Mrs D’Ath congratulated everyone involved in the project.

“We chose to do a podcast series in response to women telling us that accessing information anonymously and discreetly was essential when dealing with the issue of Intimate Partner Sexual Violence,” said Sharon Gingell, Coordinator of the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Brisbane North Community Legal Service. Five episodes of the podcasts are available and can be found on all major podcast directories including iTunes and Spotify.

“This resource creates a roadmap for survivors and professionals to identify when Intimate Partner Sexual Violence is occurring,” she said. “Domestic and sexual abuse can only be properly addressed with the help of awareness and education.” IPSV sits in the crossroads of domestic violence and sexual assault and is another tactic abusers use to assert or maintain power and control over their intimate partners. In each podcast episode, a woman shares her story about recognising and getting help for IPSV. Listeners also hear from a range of professionals who have worked with women who have experienced sexual violence in their intimate relationships.
