EXPERT ADVICE

HYDROTHERAPY

BUSINESS

with Rob Teasdale from The Joint Nundah

with Michael Haupt from DFK Hirn Newey

What are the benefits of Hydrotherapy?

Changes to TPAR Requirements

Hydrotherapy is essentially physiotherapy in warm water and has many benefits. It is a great form of exercise for anyone who needs to improve strength and mobility, who may otherwise find it difficult to exercise on land.

If you operate a business within the building and construction industry, the lodgment of the Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR) will be just another obligation you attend to every year.

Some conditions that can benefit from hydrotherapy include: • Osteoarthritis • Certain neurological conditions • Post surgical techniques - ACL reconstruction, knee/hip replacement, spinal surgery • Cardiac and respiratory conditions

However, from 1 July 2018, the ATO has extended the TPAR requirements to the cleaning and courier industries, and are extending the changes to road freight services, IT services and security, investigation and surveillance services from 1 July 2019.

Benefits of hydrotherapy VS land-based exercise include: • Water buoyancy makes movement easier and takes load off the body and joints by reducing effects of gravity • The pressure of the water can help with lymphatic flow and decrease swelling in limbs • It is a safe environment for those with balance issues Exercises are tailored to suit each person’s condition and ability. Your physiotherapist will ensure that your program is manageable and can be performed between physiotherapy sessions. Pool-based physiotherapy sessions are either individual or group sessions. Contact the Joint Physiotherapy team for more information. 9/1220 Sandgate Rd, Nundah |

/thejointnundah | info@thejointnundah.com

The TPAR notifies the ATO about payments your business made to contractors. The ATO can then cross-match the payments, to reduce instances of under-reported income.

The details you are required to report for each eligible contractor include their business or individual name, address, ABN and the GST inclusive amount paid to them. The TPAR is due for lodgement by 28 August 2019. Where you operate within these industries but do not use contractors, you are required to notify the ATO that this is the case.

As always, change can be confusing, so if you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact us on 07 3266 1488. DFK Hirn Newey | 1143 Sandgate Road, Nundah | Ph: 3266 1488

HEALTH AND FITNESS

with Andrew Emms and Mark Roemermann from @realty

with SARGE Jamieson from SARGE’s BootCamp & Fitness Nundah

Who wants to live in Nundah?

Goal Setting: The S.M.A.R.T. Way

Nundah is a wonderful home for families, empty-nesters and retirees, couples and singles. There are character homes, large homes with resortstyle backyards, townhouses, smaller single-level residences and plenty of styles and sizes of home units. There are even retirement and aged care options, with more coming.

With the warmer months just around the corner, a lot of us have started setting some health and fitness goals to get ourselves summer ready. Goals are a great way to keep us on track and motivated, but are they S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely)?

The various options are well supported by local parks, schools, daycare, cafes, restaurants, boutique shops and larger shopping centres. Have you seen what’s happening at Toombul with its magnificent renovations and extension? There are bus and rail for public transport, and easy access to walking/cycle paths too.

Specific: I want to lose 10kg by exercising, eating better and entering a fun-run for motivation. ü

We have passionate locals who are responsible for local events such as the weekly Nundah Farmers Markets, the Nundah Festival and Art Show, the Nundah Film Festival, We Care Week and Christmas in the Village. How lucky are we?

Is “I want to lose weight” a ‘S.M.A.R.T’ goal? No.

Measurable: I want to lose 10kg of excess body fat without losing muscle mass. ü Achievable: I will eat ‘X’ amount of Carbs, Protein & Fat and train ‘X’ amount per day. ü Relevant: I want to lose weight now so I look and feel better about myself for the beach in summer. ü Timely:

I want to lose 10kg by my birthday, which is in 15 weeks. ü

Whether you want to rightsize your home, shift into something a little more your style, or buy your first home, Nundah offers plenty of options. Do you need some assistance to find your “right” option?

S.M.A.R.T goals are a proven and effective method of achievement. Summer bodies are made in winter, so setting yourself up a S.M.A.R.T goal now will be a good step towards that future beach body - set your goal today!

Call Andrew Emms on 0427 734 743 for help with your move.

To help set your fitness goals, or even better, join BootCamp, contact SARGE via /Nundah4012 or 0455 510 051.

Supporting Mental Health Issues Nundah psychology practice, KCPSYCH has been assisting the community for over 13 years with their team of 20 practitioners. With one in five Australians aged 16 – 85 experiencing a mental health issue (according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2017-18), KCPYSCH founder, Kristie Clarke has seen an increase in people seeking out help. “The local community is becoming more mental health-aware and is looking for more specific services for family and loved ones,” says Kristie. “Most commonly, people present with anxiety and depression but we are seeing more clients present to our clinic where standard approaches may not have worked.”

Speak to Kristie, Michelle and the KCPSYCH team at the Nundah Festival stand to discuss services including NDIS, Neurofeedback and Child and Family services.

KCPSYCH offers a range of services to address the needs of the community, including child developmental assessment and counselling, clinical and counselling psychology, and trauma and neurofeedback services. Fellow practitioner, Senior and Child Psychologist Michelle Alexander, says the team is passionate about supporting young people and their families to live their best lives. “Our child psychologists focus on understanding each child’s individual needs and goals to address their challenges effectively and help build their resilience,” says Michelle. “We enjoy working with our clients to help them, and the people around them, to become the best version of themselves.” KCPSYCH | 9/1208 Sandgate Road, Nundah Ph: 3256 6320 | kcpsych.com.au

How’s Your Oral Health Tracking? Nundah Village Dental is celebrating Dental Health Week in August and is encouraging locals to get their oral health back on track. A study conducted by the Australian Dental Association revealed that 65% of Australians have not seen a dentist in the last two years.

To get your smile back on track, Nundah Village Dental has shared their best tips for oral health care:

If you are a dental health superstar, and brush, floss and visit the dentist regularly – great! There is always more that you can do to maintain healthy teeth, including:

• Brush twice daily

• Limit sugary treats to meal times

• Floss between your teeth daily

• Drink fluoridated tap water

• See a dentist regularly to maintain good oral health

• Chew sugar-free gum after eating

Visiting the dentist regularly means your teeth will get the consistent care they need and ensure that minor problems can be treated early, reducing the need for major work. Want to take steps to get your oral health on track? Call the team at Nundah Village Dental and book in today with their experienced and friendly dental team. BCC Budget

Backing Small Business

Business in Brisbane

The Brisbane City Council budget was handed down and a range of exciting citywide and local initiatives were announced.

Small businesses are the backbone of Brisbane’s economy. This Budget outlined our ambition for Brisbane for the next decade, which includes building Australia’s most small-business-friendly city with more support in the suburbs.

Did you know that Council has an area dedicated to supporting Business in Brisbane? As part of our commitment to build a growing economy for our city, our dedicated business area provides resources and opportunities for businesses at any level of growth. From getting the right permits and licences, through to data to help research your new business and our 24/7 business hotline, Council is dedicated to delivering valuable and practical support for new business.

Announcements included free off-peak travel for seniors, a first-home-buyers remission, benefits for small business, the creation of Brisbane’s biggest park in 50 years at Victoria Park Golf Course, the purchase and creation of more green space and the construction of five green bridges. From a local perspective, a range of projects have been funded including park upgrades, road resurfacing, intersection upgrades, and bikeway works. The budget supports Council’s objective to make the Brisbane of tomorrow even better than the Brisbane of today.

This year’s budget is providing $2 million in relief to reduce the cost of small business fees and charges. By subsidising small business fees and charges, Council is reducing the compliance cost of obtaining regulatory approvals. The discounts offered include suburban footpath dining permits, food van licences, market stall fees, and business advertising applications. For further information about small business fee reductions, contact Council’s Business Hotline on 133 BNE (131 263).

As part of our focus to create a city of neighbourhoods, Council is working in partnership with Nundah businesses to identify opportunities to enhance the local economy and activate Nundah as a neighbourhood, suburban retail precinct. Council’s Local Business Partnership Initiative will aim to promote Nundah as a destination where the community and visitors can experience great food and unique village-style shopping. They have incorporated more locally sourced ingredients, committed to eliminating all feasible plastic from packaging and updated their head office with more sustainable features. “We installed energy-efficient lighting and 294 solar panels to completely power our Banyo office,” says Salvatore. “We’ve reduced our landfill by 46% by introducing a large office compost system and are eliminating the use of bubble-wrap for orders.” “In the coming year, I really see aromatherapy and wellness companies being more considerate towards the environment in terms of sustainable manufacturing and packaging - moving toward refill services, reusable packaging and the concept of zero waste,” says Salvatore. Perfect Potion products are available locally at the Banyo head office and at Vessel Nundah. Perfect Potion | 7 Guardhouse Road, Banyo perfectpotion.com.au Banyo head

Homelessness Week 2019 Housing Ends Homelessness

Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Playgroup

Homelessness Week is an annual week coordinated by Homelessness Australia to raise awareness of people experiencing homelessness, the issues they face and the action needed to achieve enduring solutions. Did you know? • Right now, more than 116,000 Australians are homeless

• We need homes that people can afford to end homelessness

All families with children aged 0-5yrs are welcome to come join in a variety of fun activities.

• On any given night in Australia, 1 in 200 people are homeless

• Currently 195,000 Australians are on social housing waiting lists

When: Every Monday 9:30am-11:00am, during school terms.

• The main causes of homelessness are poverty, unaffordable rents and family violence

• Despite the increased need, federal homelessness funding has remained static – 1 in 3 people were turned away from homelessness services last year due to a lack of resources

Where: Nundah Neighbourhood Centre, 14 Station Street, Nundah (use side entrance to playground out the back)

• To fix these problems we need a national plan to end homelessness and a national housing strategy to deliver 500,000 social and affordable rental homes

The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Needs Your Help The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre is once again hosting ‘Bubbles & Brands’ at Platform 14 as part of the Nundah Festival on Sunday, 8th September. Donations can be received at the Centre from 9am to 4.30pm, Monday to Thursday. We are looking forward to seeing what elegant items we can come up with as a community!

60th Reunion for First Nundah State School Baby Boomers By past student, Kay Reibelt (nee Godsell) A 60th reunion will be held for students that completed scholarship at Nundah State School in 1959. These students are now in their early seventies and many have not been in touch since leaving school. A thrill is in store as they recall the flared skirts, rope petticoats and bobby socks from their schooldays in the fabulous fifties. Conversation will flow easily for these baby boomers whose parents fought in the Second World War. Baby boomers will be familiar with wartime stories often told by mothers because fathers preferred not to remember. Memories of simple pleasures are now treasured. Dedicated teachers are fondly remembered and valued. 60TH SCHOOL REUNION

Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness in Northgate

When: Monday, 16 September Time: 10am for morning tea, 12pm for lunch

The Lodge Youth Support Service is a residential living skills program in Northgate that provides accommodation and support to up to four young people aged 16-25 years old who are experiencing homelessness.

The Lodge team provides a nurturing environment that fosters a sense of belonging and assists young people in building the skills needed for independent living, including cooking, nutrition, budgeting, physical health, relationship-building and time management. ‘In the last financial year, seven out of nine young people moved on from The Lodge into independent accommodation and all were engaged in employment or paid traineeships,’ says Theo Samaras, Service Coordinator. The Lodge has increased its connections with the community by holding sausage sizzles at local Bunning stores, participating in Youth Homelessness Matters Day, the Nundah Festival and holding Open Days at The Lodge. If you would like to learn more about The Lodge and get involved in any capacity, they would love to hear from you! Please contact a Youth Worker on 3266 2155 or youthworker@thelodgeyss.org.au.
