Farewell Simon Simon Rayner, who has been the Hotel Manager at The Royal Nundah for the past six years, has finished his time at The Royal. Simon spearheaded the renovations at The Royal six years ago, which relaunched as a quality Italian restaurant in a much-loved Aussie pub setting. During Simon’s time at The Royal they have been finalists in the Queensland Hotels Association Awards for two consecutive years, and the restaurant has been accredited with Ospitalita Italiana, a quality seal recognised by the Italian Government. “It has been a wonderful journey over the last six years meeting lots of amazing people and watching families grow along with ours,” says Simon. All the very best to Simon in his new role!

7 Years of Loving Nundah This month we are celebrating. At this time in 2013 we officially launched Loving Nundah (the magazine) for you. With nervous hopeful energy and a few local supporters we began this journey, not really knowing where it would end up. Our small local team have now put together 43 issues of the magazine. Loving Nundah has grown organically across print, social media and digital reaching a large local audience. Seven years of sharing local stories with you. Seven years producing something “by us and for us”. I’ve noticed that traditional news, media and advertising play on our insecurities and fears. That is not what we are about – we thrive on promoting the positive doers in our community, sharing what is happening for locals and the stories that connect us.

We can all buy well this holiday season, by supporting our local businesses. Take a moment to enjoy what we have on offer – visit the Nundah Farmers Markets, our local parks, the Upstairs Precinct at Toombul, go to the Nundah Library, grab a coffee in Nundah Village, and check out local shops and the food and drink on offer. Thanks for sharing the journey with us, Ben and the team at Loving Nundah.

We love Nundah. Our first issue - Dec 2013!

Made with love in Nundah.

Thanks for reading!

Are you aware of the ways the government will help you grow your super? If you earn less than $37,000, there is a government payment to help you save for retirement. This is known as the “low-income super tax offset”. This can be up to $500 and is 15% of the concessional contributions you or your employer made to your super fund for the year.

If you earn less than $53,564 and make a personal after-tax contribution, the government will give you a maximum $500 as a co-contribution. This is an easy way to make up to a 50% return on your investment. To be eligible for these concessions there are some additional criteria you will need to take into consideration. We recommend you speak with a professional adviser for advice specific to your situation. If you would like to learn about these and other ways you can make contributions to your super fund, then give us a call.

‘Tis the Season to be Jolly Doing little to no exercise over the festive season is a common occurrence. It’s a time of over-indulgence, socialising and enjoying your break. BUT when the ‘silly season’ ends and January hits, we at The Joint notice a spike in exercise-related injuries. Some are attributed to beginning exercise as a New Year’s resolution. However, even ‘seasoned’ exercisers experience niggles that come out of nowhere and can take weeks or months to resolve. With some simple guidance and planning, you can avoid the dreaded ‘Januaryitis’. Tips when returning to training include:

• Reduce training load by ~25%; • Consider intensity, frequency AND duration of sessions when planning load management; • Re-build training load by approximately 10% per week; • Respect pain – an exercise causing more than 3-4/10 pain should be stopped and modified to bring it back to an acceptable level.

Note: Information current as at November 2019.

Our physios at The Joint are the perfect people to guide you. Take advantage of our special offer and receive a bonus 30 minute massage when booking an initial physio session (new patient or new injury) until the 31 December.

Christmas is a good time for reflection... and in real estate, that means looking at the data Nundah’s population and confidence keeps growing. The local economy is spurred on by attractive rental returns and its relative affordability. This is coupled with jobs growth through infrastructure projects like TradeCoast, the airport runway, and Toombul’s new entertainment and dining precinct.

Did you know that one in five children has an undetected vision problem? Good vision is important for a child’s educational, physical and social development. Children learn more through their visual sense than all other senses combined. With about one in five Australian children suffering from an undetected vision problem, it’s important to be aware of the possible signs of a vision problem to give every child the best chance of reaching their full potential. How can I tell if my child has good vision? Children often assume that how they see is normal. When you visit Nicole, who has over 30 years experience in testing children’s eyes, she will check that their eyes are healthy and all visual skills are developing as expected. At what age should children have their first eye examination? We recommend that all children have a full eye examination with an optometrist before starting prep and regularly (at least every two years) as they progress through primary and secondary school. The school holidays are a perfect time to have your child’s vision examined.

Maintain Balance This Christmas

Low Waste Christmas Tips

At Fitstop, we’re all about balance. This means we’re all for having fun, without too many restrictions. Here are a few tips to remain active and healthy while also enjoying this fun, scrumptious and rightly ‘silly’ season to its fullest (hopefully reducing the need to make a resolution that involves fat loss or detoxing!)

Christmas can be overwhelming, with more ‘stuff’ coming into the home and budgets being stretched. There are plenty of ways to reduce waste at Christmas and enjoy your time with friends and family.

1

Keep active. If you’re at the beach, take a walk along the water. If you’re lazing by the pool, go for a few laps. If you’re doing your shopping, park at the end of the centre to get your steps up.

2

lan your food as best you can. If you know you’re going to indulge P at dinner, keep breakfast and lunch light. If you’re aware that you’ll be consuming alcohol, aim for light options such as low carb beer or a white spirit with soda. This Christmas to New Year Fitstop Nundah is free for everyone. Download the Fitstop App from the App Store and create an account under Nundah to book in for FREE.

Whyte Group Accountants provide a range of accounting and financial services to small and medium-sized businesses.

• Consider giving experiences, your time/skills, donations or vouchers, not things. • Give handmade (meals, soaps, biscuits, jams, bouquets, cuttings, crafts etc). • Give eco-gifts (reusable cups, shampoo bar, beeswax wrap, produce bags etc). • Shop second-hand, handmade, local, social, ethical. • Wrap presents in fabric (op shop scarves, tea towels), kid’s drawings/paintings, reusable gift bags, santa sacks. • Consider Christmas tree alternatives (potted/live, ladder/shelving, natives, felt or hire). • Crackers/bon-bons – Make your own from toilet rolls, fill with unwrapped treats, small crystals, nail clippers, scratchies etc. • Advent calendars – buy/make reusable: cloth with pockets, wooden with drawers, toilet roll tube creations – fill with ideas for fun activities! • Decorate with fabric tablecloths, reusable bunting or wreaths. Try setting a waste-free goal this Christmas and tell someone – it helps increase your chance of success. Vessel Nundah | 7 Nundah St, Nundah | www.vesselnundah.com.au

Nundah’s Hole-In-The-Wall Café It might be Nundah’s smallest café, but Ant Espresso has made a big splash in Nundah. Located between MLC Advice Nundah and Toombul Shire Hall, Ant Espresso serves specialty coffee by local roaster Wolff Coffee, skillfully prepared by owner Anthony Gelina, who has over nine years’ experience as a barista. Anthony is a two-time BAC Barista Champion and prides himself on keeping things simple and doing it well. “We’ve been looking at this space for over a year and the pieces fell into place nicely,” says Anthony. “We couldn’t be happier with how well the small space has turned out.”

Already popular among Nundah workers, Anthony says that those driving into the City have also sought out his coffee.

Nundah Now Celebrates 2019 Events! It’s been a big year for events in Nundah, with a range of local events organised by volunteer group Nundah Now Inc. In March, the sold-out Long Table Moonlight Dinner was held at Platform 14 at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre. Due to wet weather the dinner was held indoors, but it didn’t dampen the mood, with delicious food and entertainment enjoyed by attendees. In May, the Nundah Film Festival was held at BCC Cinemas Toombul. Fifteen films were screened, supporting Australia’s emerging filmmakers. Nundah’s biggest weekend of the year, including the Nundah Festival, Nundah Art Show and Nundah Movie and Fireworks in the Park, was held during the first weekend of September. The 19th annual Nundah Festival was the biggest yet, with two stages, stalls, rides, food, drinks and entertainment.

Meet Rhi at The Plant Lounge With a range of lush plants and beautiful ceramics, you’ll feel at peace as soon as you step in the door at The Plant Lounge. Rhi, who took over The Plant Lounge earlier this year, is a passionate green thumb with a knack for indoor plant styling. She also loves to meet fellow plant enthusiasts – and those who are trying their best!

“We love to help our plant friends get the right plant – our pricing is super competitive and we stock a range of plants for every budget,” says Rhi. “Indoor plants are only going to gain popularity in the coming years with people wanting to connect more to nature, with less opportunity to do that in their immediate environments.” Rhi loves the village atmosphere that Nundah has, and loves chatting to new clients (especially if they bring in their pet dogs!). “We love the support from the local community. We have people go out of their way to come and visit us, when they could go to a chain store. And they do that because they care about local business.” The Plant Lounge | Shop 1, 8 Station Street, Nundah www.theplantlounge.com.au | /theplantloungenundah |

Planning is already underway for the 20th Nundah Festival, due to be held in September 2020. The final event for 2019 will be Christmas in Nundah Village, held on Thursday, 5 December. At a new venue – Platform 14 at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre – attendees can enjoy Christmas carols from the Northgate State School choir, a sausage sizzle and a visit from Santa, the Christmas Fairy and Elf. The fun will start from 6pm – we can’t wait to see you there. The volunteer team at Nundah Now Inc wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Nundah Cash Store Truck Here’s a blast from the past – locals Greg and Christine Stevens have recreated the Nundah Cash Store truck from the 1920s. Greg and Christine spotted a photo of the original Nundah Cash Store truck on the wall at Simply Duo and decided to recreate the truck.

After finding a Chev in a truck yard in Perth, Greg and Christine set to recreating the truck, complete with signage in the original style, so that it can be used in the community.

Honda gets the MDQ team on the move Thanks to The Honda Foundation and Northside Honda, the team from Muscular Dystrophy QLD (MDQ) now has access to a new Honda CRV, allowing them to visit more clients with muscular dystrophy. Rob Brown, Principal Dealer at Northside Honda was only too happy to support MDQ’s application, particularly given his personal connection with the condition. “My brother has muscular dystrophy so it’s a cause close to my heart. Being a condition that is less common, I have a unique understanding of the needs of people with MD and I know how imperative the services provided by the team at MDQ are,” he said.

MDQ CEO, Helen Frayne, said the new car would allow the MDQ team to travel to home visits and therapy sessions with clients.

“We did not want a restored truck as it had to be still dressed in its work clothes,” says Christine. “This truck was a great starting point, with some mechanical issues, but a good base.” “If locals would like it at their Nundah (or nearby) community events, we welcome them to call Christine on 0419 789 151 to use the truck for free,” says Greg. Greg and Christine have a range of vintage vehicles, including a 1918 Model T Ford, a 1928 Indian Scout 101, a 1929 3-wheel Morgan, and a 1970 Morgan 4/4. “This vehicle will make it much easier for our team to deliver services and will also give us the chance to reach people living with muscular dystrophy and similar muscle-wasting conditions throughout South East Queensland,” says Helen. “We’re so very grateful for the support.” Muscular Dystrophy QLD | 1149 Sandgate Road, Nundah Ph: 3243 9700 | www.mdqld.org.au

Christmas Festivities Waste Smart Summer Merry Christmas & Happy New Year As a local community we don’t have We’re creating a clean and green Brisbane for to travel far to enjoy Christmas in our suburbs. I am hosting a free movie screening of Home Alone at Burnie Brae Park, Chermside on Friday, 13 December. More details available at: /councillor.allan.

You can enjoy Christmas in Nundah Village on Thursday, 5 December from 6pm to 7.30pm. Enjoy carols and a special visit from Santa at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre on Station Street. I am also proud to sponsor the North East Baptist Church's Carols in the Park on Sunday 8 December. There will be plenty of activities from 3:30pm, a free sausage sizzle, and carols starting at 6.30pm. The Nundah Christmas Twilight Markets are on Saturday, 7 December from 4pm to 10pm with 150 specialty stalls and live entertainment. I look forward to seeing you there.

you and your family to enjoy for years to come through initiatives, resources and programs as we tackle the war on waste as a community, and do our part to reduce landfill waste.

Remember to download Brisbane City Council's Brisbane Bin and Recycling app to help you learn how to recycle waste more effectively this summer. Council developed the app to help make recycling decisions quick and simple, it’s also a great tool for bin collection days. Brisbane's subtropical climate means our food is easily spoiled by heat, humidity, sunlight and pests. By throwing out less good food, you'll save money and reduce waste to landfill. Make your dollar and food go further this summer by knowing how to correctly store food can keep it fresher for longer and help you feel confident about food safety. Council's website has plenty of ideas to help you love your leftovers, instead of putting them in the bin. My household recycling guide fridge magnet continues to be very popular. Contact the Northgate Ward office to order yours.

As we find ourselves coming to the close of another year, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Looking back on 2019, much has been achieved in Nundah and surrounding areas. As part of our plan to get you home quicker and safer, important road infrastructure initiatives have been undertaken locally, including the upgrade to the Widdop Street and Toombul intersection with traffic lights.

This year as a city we also introduced free off-peak travel for seniors, 50 percent off rates for the first 12 months for first homeowners, and new business initiatives. We are working with you to make the Brisbane of tomorrow better than the Brisbane of today.

Nundah Family Drug Support Family Drug Support is a caring, non-religious organisation that provides non-judgemental support and education to families and friends of people that have an alcohol and/or drug dependence. Supporting families across Australia for well over twenty years, the not-for-profit, non-government service now has a Queensland base in Nundah. At their newly opened Nundah office, Chrissie Kelly, Qld State Manager, and the team provide support and information to families who are struggling to cope when someone in their family is using. “It is a difficult journey for family members. They often feel judged and shamed when someone in the family has alcohol and/or drug use concerns, and they face enormous challenges without support,” says Chrissie.

Family Drug Support offers a range of support services to assist family members, including a national 24/7 telephone support line (1300 368 186), support group meetings, information sessions and courses. The local Nundah support group offers a non-religious, open meeting for family members affected by someone’s drugs and alcohol use. They are open to anyone and provide opportunities to talk and listen to others in a non-judgemental, safe environment. The group runs the first and third Tuesday of each month, 7pm – 9pm at the Nundah Family Drug Support office. For more information about upcoming information sessions and programs, contact Chrissie and the team at the Nundah office. Orange the World November 25 has been observed as a day against gender-based violence since 1981. This date was selected to honour the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s ruler, Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). On 20 December 1993, the General Assembly of the UN adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women through resolution 48/104, paving the path towards eradicating violence against women and girls worldwide. Finally, on 7 February 2000, the General Assembly adopted resolution 54/134, officially designating 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and in doing so, inviting governments, international organisations as well as NGOs to join together and organise activities designed to raise public awareness of the issue every year on that date.

The 2019 theme for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape’. Like in previous years, this year's International Day on 25 November will mark the launch of 16 days of activism that will conclude on 10 December, which is International Human Rights Day. As a centre with a strong focus on the prevention of violence against women, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre held a stall at Chermside Shopping Centre to mark the day. The stall, which was an initiative of the Northside Alliance Against Domestic Violence (NAADV) aimed to engage with people at the shopping centre about the issue of violence against women and give people an opportunity to talk to workers about issues such as domestic and family violence.

Thank-You

We Care Week

As we come to the end of another very busy year at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Brisbane North Community Legal Service, the staff and committee would like to say a big thank you to those individuals and businesses that supported the Centre in making a difference over the last 12 months.

We would like to give special thanks to the Nundah and surrounding community which provides so much ongoing support to the Neighbourhood Centre. Over the year we have had businesses, community leaders and individuals provide support and assistance with many of our activities and events including the Nundah Festival, Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, Community Christmas Party, Culture in the Kitchen, food relief and emergency assistance program and the Family Support Programs. Local businesses have also played a significant role in supporting the Centre and I would like to particularly acknowledge the Norris Motor Group Inc who have supported our food relief program throughout the year and Nundah Now Inc who continued their strong commitment to supporting local community services, with the Long Table Dinner at Platform 14 raising much needed funds for our Domestic Violence and Family Law Legal Clinic. Also thank you to JJ Richards, The Majestic Church, The Commonwealth Bank Toombul Branch, Officeworks Virginia, The Brisbane Airport Corporation, Bunnings, Synergy, Woolworths, Toombul Bowls Club, and All Inn Brewing all of which are just a few of the local businesses who supported the Centre over the year. Thank you to our local representatives, Adam Allan; Councillor for Northgate Ward, Leanne Linard; Member for Nudgee, Tim Nicholls; Member for Clayfield, and Wayne Swan and Anika Wells; Federal Members for Lilley. All of our local representatives have been great champions of the Centre and we greatly appreciate their recognition of the valued role we play in our local community. We would also like to thank all of the volunteers at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Brisbane North Community Legal Service. Volunteers continue to play a very significant role at the Centre and without the commitment of their time, skills and creativity, the many programs offered would not be available. Finally, thank you to Ben Tibben and the team at Loving Nundah who very generously donate two professionally edited pages of the Loving Nundah Magazine to the organisation in each issue.

We Care Week is one week in November where the local community is asked to contribute their time, resources or donations to support a range of community projects. The aim of We Care Week is to identify the needs of local notfor-profits, community groups or individuals in crisis/extreme need and empower locals to help. This year, local initiatives included: • Providing self-care packs for people who have survived domestic violence • Collecting emergency food supplies for the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre

• Hosting a dinner for the young residents at The Lodge • Refurbishing the Virginia State School grandstands for the Community Swimming Club

• Creating scholastic packs for families in need

• Hosting a pamper day for women who have survived domestic and family violence

• Transforming the Centacare Northgate Centre

• Providing kids Christmas gift bags for families in need

Thank you to everyone who donated their time, resources and finances to make We Care Week a huge success. We Care Week is a local initiative by Majestic Church Brisbane. If you would like to know more or would like to get involved in 2020, visit: www.wecareweek.com.au
