Beth Mooney celebrates a stellar season Australian cricketer and Brisbane northside local, Beth Mooney, has had another stellar year playing cricket for Australia. In January 2019, Beth was an integral part in Brisbane Heat’s Women’s Big Bash League final against the Sydney Sixers, taking out the win and being selected as Player of the Final. Just 11 months later, Brisbane Heat took out the final against the Adelaide Strikers, with Beth hitting 56 from just 45 deliveries to guide her team to victory – and being selected as Player of the Final for a second year. It’s been a huge 12 months for the 26-year-old, who started out playing cricket in the backyard in her hometown of Hervey Bay with her brother and sister. When Beth was asked to fill in for her brother’s cricket team, it kick-started her love of cricket and it’s grown from a hobby to a full-time profession. “I’m not sure why I enjoyed it so much – it’s like watching paint dry for a kid,” says Beth. “But I learnt that the game itself is actually quite challenging. As I played more, I liked the challenge of trying to be better every time I went out.” Initially, Beth didn’t consider cricket as a full-time role. “I thought cricket would be a hobby and I’d have to have a job on the side. Sometimes it feels a bit surreal to have had the opportunity to make a career out of it and hopefully continue that for a few more years." Beth has now been part of the Queensland team for ten years, and the Brisbane Heat team for five years.

“The interest in women’s cricket is exciting people are talking about it a lot more now. The games are getting televised on free-to-air in prime time, the final match was sold out, the media is getting on board, it’s a whole host of things.”

Photo: Bradley Kanaris, Getty Images

After a huge 2019 season, things aren’t slowing down for Beth in 2020. “In 2020 we have the T20 International Tri-Series and then the T20 World Cup. Then we’re off to South Africa for another series, then to England to play in a domestic tournament,” says Beth. Beth, who recently purchased her first home in Virginia, misses home when she’s on the road. “I have a few favourite things about the Northside area – everyone is so friendly and up for a chat,” says Beth. “Kedron Brook’s not far so I take my dog Ruby every day I can. Chapel Park Café in Nundah does the best coffee, and I go to the gym at PLC Northgate, which has a really cool atmosphere.’ Beth’s next match will be in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Warm-Up on Saturday, 15 February at Allan Border Field, Brisbane.

Move over Cancer For the rising number of cancer survivors worldwide, there is growing and irrefutable evidence that exercise is an essential part of recovery. The Clinical Oncology Society of Australia has recommended that “Exercise be embedded as part of standard practice in cancer care and be viewed as an adjunct therapy that helps counteract the adverse effects of cancer.” In particular, they have endorsed the referral of someone diagnosed with cancer to a health care professional who is experienced in cancer care.

We can assist you with individual tailored care to minimise negative effects by: • Reducing cancer-related fatigue • Improving and maintaining a healthy body weight • Managing side effects of surgical and medical treatment • Reducing nausea, anxiety and depression • Improving muscle mass and strength • Reducing the risk of cancer recurrence For more information or to start your tailored care program, call The Joint. VISION & LEARNING

with Nicole Stimson from Eyecare Plus Nundah

Children’s Vision

The type of person to call Nundah home

With about one in five Australian children suffering from an undetected vision problem, it’s important to be aware of possible signs your child may have a vision problem. Some of these can include:

The backgrounds of the people I meet each week at our open homes and inspections are incredibly diverse. I meet all family dynamics, empty nesters and retirees, executive couples and singles and first home buyers. The reason for this is because Nundah offers a wide array of different housing options. There are fully renovated Queenslanders, entry-level character homes, new and old townhouses, and plenty of different shapes and styles of units.

• Coming home from school with headaches, red eyes • Rubbing eyes, particularly during close activities • Adopting a close working distance for any close tasks • Poor attention span How can I tell if my child has good vision? Children often assume that how they see is normal. A visit to Nicole, who has over 30 years’ experience in testing children’s eyes, will check that their eyes are healthy and all visual skills are developing as expected.

From the conversations I’ve had with these prospective purchasers, the main reason they are selecting Nundah is predominately based on lifestyle and convenience.

We recommend that all children have a routine vision examination with an optometrist before starting prep and regularly (at least every two years) as they progress through primary and secondary school. Reading and learning can be frustrating for students with undetected vision problems.

Nundah is extremely well supported from this perspective, with two major shopping precincts (Nundah Village and Toombul Shopping Centre), ample public transport options, day care and schooling options, cafes, restaurants, and proximity to Brisbane Domestic and International Airports. With median house prices in neighbouring suburbs like Clayfield and Hendra over $1M, I understand why Nundah is such an attractive investment option for so many! Marketing Tips for 2020

What’s your why?

The definition of what we consider as “marketing” is constantly changing and becoming broader.

In supporting our members and the wider community to be happier and healthier, we encourage you to find your why. Why do you exercise? A great way to discover this is to consider what you value the most in life. For example:

Here are 3 things well worth looking at as part of your marketing plan: 1. Customer experience It’s no longer about convincing people to buy, it is about creating a customer experience that will keep people coming back for more. The number one reason customers are driven away is bad employee attitude. 2. Visualisation Research has shown that people prefer visual content to plain text. You just have to look at the growth of image-focused platforms Pinterest and Instagram to see the proof of this.

Do you value your health? Is living a longer life free from illness a goal of yours? Do you value your body? Is being free from pain and discomfort a goal of yours? Do you value family? Do you desire to keep up with your kids or to model to them a healthy way of living?

3. Goals + Measurement

Do you value friendship and community? Is being a part of something the key to happiness for you?

Your marketing goals and objectives must align with the overall goals of your business. Once you have some goals you can work to reach them and then assess from there what works and where to deploy your marketing spend.

Whatever your why, explore it and keep coming back to it, particularly on those days when you lack energy or motivation. Your why is your compass and will guide you to make changes and choices that help you to live in alignment with it.

Cheers to local Breweries! With the recent opening of Fick Brewing Company in Northgate, our little area of Brisbane is now bursting with local breweries, with some of the best craft beers in the biz created in our backyard. There’s still plenty of warm weather around to enjoy a cold one – leave the car at home, grab your mates and catch the train to visit our five favourite local breweries. We had a chat to the local brewery teams to see what’s in store for 2020.

Aether Brewing

All Inn Brewing Co. Closest train station: Nudgee Station (5 minute walk)

Closest train station: Northgate Station (4 minute walk) After successfully launching the taproom in November last year, Dave Ward and his team are enjoying engaging with locals and the craft beer community in general. “It has been a long and arduous task getting the approvals we needed and we will be trying to get an outdoor area licensed and extended hours to better cater for the area,” says Dave. Aether Brewing recently launched a Summer of Sour series, which has been received extremely well with the QLD summer heat and humidity. In addition they are working closely with the creative community and incorporating art with the beers they love to create.

2020 will see All Inn Brewing Co celebrating their 7th birthday in July. The birthday celebrations will kick off with their annual (and very popular) Locals Brew Day in June, where locals are invited to take part in the brewing process to make the perfect birthday beer. Lyndo n Pasztor, of All Inn, said they continue to support home brewers and are excited about seeing their one-off seasonal brew in bottle shops soon. “We’re supporting home brewers by making lots of FWKs (home brew kits) and are also rolling out a series of one-off seasonal brews alongside our core range,” says Lyndon.

Hub Brewing Closest train station: Geebung Station (2 minute walk)

Fonzie Abbot

Photo: Lewis Lotherington

Closest train station: Albion Station (10 minute walk) Fonzie Abbott isn’t just a brewery – they are also a coffee roaster and distillery, making them a one-stop shop for all your drinks. After winning a slew of awards in 2019 (including Gold at the Australian Gin Awards, Silver at the Tasting Australian Spirit Awards and Bronze at the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show), they are continuing to improve, with plans for some ‘weird and wonderful’ beer and spirit concoctions in 2020. They have just made the switch to their containers for their Wishbone Gin and Vodka, which are now available in pretty cool tins.

8

2020 will see ‘The Hub’ (as the locals call them) doing what it does best – pouring plenty of fresh beer and enjoying a stellar line-up of food trucks on the weekend. They brew all beer onsite in small batches, so there is always something new to try. Hub Brewing will be partnering with local metal sculpture artist Rastra Lyall, and will host its inaugural art exhibition on March 1. Coinciding with their monthly Sunday Session, the exhibition will showcase Rastra’s unique metal sculptures and paintings. There will be live music, low-nslow BBQ and a special exhibition release ‘Rastra’ beer on tap. Hub Brewing 20 Morrisby Street, Geebung

FICK Brewing Company Closest train station: Northgate Station (9 minute walk) The latest brewery to open in the local area is Fick Brewing Company. Owners Nadresha and Fabrizio are excited that in 2020 they will be brewing onsite (they first brewed their beers offsite while waiting for final approvals). Nadresha is looking forward to 2020 and trying new things at Fick. “We’ll be brewing a wide range of beers, with a couple of Belgian styles first up,” says Nadresha. “We’re really open to anything - we want to experiment with hops to put modern twists on traditional styles but also nail some of the classics,’ says Nadresha.

Love is in the Air! Local marriage celebrant, Tara Rowe from Tie the Knot by Tara, is gearing up for a busy year with Valentine’s Day and the leap year happening in 2020. Although women can propose at anytime they wish, an old Irish tradition sees an influx of women proposing to their partners on February 29, in a tradition set in the 5th century. Tara works with couples for wedding ceremonies, wedding renewals, commitment ceremonies and naming days. “Getting married is a big event in your life,” says Tara. “As such, it does come with some legal forms and requirements. I can help couples through the legal necessities, while still ensuring the ceremony is a reflection of those involved and the life they are starting together.”

Tara, who has been a marriage celebrant for 5 years, says it’s important for couples to choose a marriage celebrant who can help them to create a ceremony that will be unique and memorable. “I have been fortunate enough to be involved in many weddings and have lots of advice and tips I love to share with couples,” says Tara. “I can’t wait to meet more couples in 2020 and work with them to give them a day they will always remember.” Speak to Tara about your upcoming wedding or event by calling 0434 609 617.

Nundah Village Dental welcomes Oral Health Therapist to the team An Oral Health Therapist has joined the team at Nundah Village Dental to provide extra services and care for patients. Shireen Smith brings 15 years of experience as an Oral Health Therapist to Nundah, and is passionate about helping develop good oral health habits to keep patients' teeth healthy for life.

Shireen will work alongside the team to provide advice on preventive dental care for patients of all ages, as well as treatment for children and teenagers. Shireen advocates regular dental appointments with teeth cleaning to maintain good oral health. One of the most important reasons for coming to the dentist regularly is the removal of plaque. This is important for a few reasons. 80% of bad breath comes from the bacterial colonies. If the dentist doesn't remove this plaque, the bacteria will cause the loss of teeth due to gum disease. Also, research shows that people with gum disease are twice as likely to suffer coronary artery disease. They are determined to do something for those in need, whether it be homelessness, struggling to make ends meet or just simply needing a friend to talk to. Olive and her husband Peni Volavola, pastors of the local church, saw the hardship and the need in the community, so together with Karen and the Nundah Activity Centre (NAC), they decided to host community meals. “It broke my heart to see that there were people in our community going hungry and doing it tough,” says Olive. “How could I just sit back and do nothing, when I've been in that situation myself." At their first community meal, they had 28 people attend. “The people who attended were so grateful for the meal. For some, it was the only meal they would have that week,” says Olive. “One person who attended told me how she had been sleeping in her car for the past five years, so wasn’t able to cook a meal.”

Since that first night four months ago, Olive and the members of Compassion4Community Unlimited have started offering two weekly dinners and two weekly breakfasts and are now feeding 70 – 100 people at each meal. “We ask for a gold coin donation to try and cover our costs, and the people attending certainly give what they can,” says Olive. The rest of the funding for the meals comes directly from Olive and the Compassion4Community Unlimited team who also volunteer by cooking, serving and cleaning each meal. “The community meals have become more like a story-telling session, where new friendships are formed,” says Olive. “We have people who need a hot meal, but also need to share their story. So I encourage all locals and their families to attend the meals, not just for the food, but to connect with people in your community.”

International Women’s Day 'Each for Equal' - 8 March 2020 International Women's Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women - while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender equality. The first International Women's Day occurred in 1911, supported by over one million people. Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist once explained, “The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." An equal world is an enabled world. We can

actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements.

The race is on for the gender-equal boardroom, a gender-equal government, gender equal media coverage, genderequal workplaces, gender equal sports coverage, and more gender equality in health and wealth ... so let's make it happen. Let's be #EachforEqual.

So put your arms out front and STRIKE THE #EachforEqual POSE to motivate others and to make International Women's Day YOUR day. Post your #IWD2020 message on social media with your "hands out" equal pose for a strong callto-action for others to support #EachforEqual also. For International Women's Day 2020 and beyond, how will you support #EachforEqual?

The Brisbane North Community Legal Service It can be easy for individuals to feel lost in the complicated legal process. Private lawyers can be expensive, and often the government legal assistance has limited resources. Despite a need for legal assistance, many cannot access affordable legal help. The Brisbane North Community Legal Service (BNCLS), help breaks the cycle of hardship and despair by providing access to justice through a free, quality, local and accessible legal service. The service is available to everyone, and especially people who are disadvantaged or marginalised. This free legal service is provided at the long-established weekly Wednesday drop-in advice service staffed by dedicated volunteer lawyers and students. Many of these volunteers have specific expertise. The Daytime Generalist Service is staffed by a senior generalist lawyer and a female family lawyer in the Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic, specifically for women who have experienced domestic violence. The Wednesday Evening Drop-in Service is supervised by our Legal Service Administrator (Jo Money) and opens at 6.15pm but Intake Sheets are taken from 5.30pm. No appointment is necessary and clients are generally seen in order of arrival, subject to the availability of a Solicitor with relevant experience.

The Daytime Generalist Service and Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic are available by appointment - call 3260 6820. Like other community legal centres, the service is not means-tested and takes a holistic collaborative approach, providing effective information, advice and practical referrals to specialist legal, nonlegal and multi-disciplinary services. However, donations are always appreciated and a receipt will be provided for donations over $2.00, which are tax deductible. Lawyers and students wishing to volunteer their services to BNCLS are always welcome. The BNCLS also provides community legal education to schools, seniors and other groups. For further information contact Jo Money on 3260 6820. The BNCLS looks forward to assisting our community in Brisbane’s North during 2020.
