What do you do and what mediums do you work in? My background is actually in the fashion industry. I think it helps me a lot in what I do today- illustration, graphics and branding design. I create custom logo designs, beauty and cosmetic product illustrations, as well as fashion accessories drawings and the traditional fashion illustrations. I love to work in watercolour and ink.

Where does your inspiration come from? I find inspiration everyday in something different. It could be a song on the radio, walking and discovering Nundah or sitting by the ocean. Art shops can be quite inspiring and I just love colours, fabrics and yarn. A lot of my inspiration comes from my culture. I’m half German and half Romanian. I work a lot with folklore elements.

Festival NUNDAH VILLAGE STREET
Nundah’s Best Party Yet! The 2013 Nundah Village Street Festival was a marvellous success. It was an incredible day with crowds forming well before Nundah State School marching band and performers officially opened the event. This year’s Festival showcased local community groups, associations, schools and of course our many local businesses. More than 70 stalls dotted Nundah Village from Buckland Road to Wood Street where striking works were on display at the annual Art Show. Businesses and stall holders alike have commended the Nundah District Development Association on an event that many regard as
the best in the festival’s 11 year history. The expanded layout enhanced everyone’s enjoyment of the stage performances and enabled an easier flow of patrons up and down the street. It also provided more room for the roaming entertainers to perform to the delighted crowd. Parents definitely took home plenty of worn out kids who’d been spinning on the Cup & Saucer, performing for their admiring fans, having photos taken or a chat with their favourite fantasy characters or jumping for charity in this year’s Festival Fun Factory. There was also plenty for mums and dads too, with tasty treats from local cafés and the variety of
Slightly Twisted Refreshment Lounge
food vendors located along the aptly named Eat Street. Those raising funds for charity and other worthy causes were also quite prosperous on the day. Many local residents, festival visitors, local community groups and businesses of Nundah Village have asked me to thank this year’s festival organisers for a party they thoroughly enjoyed, and are truly looking forward to being a part of again in 2014. Life After ‘House Rules’ for Amy and Sean Nundah’s very own celebrity couple - Amy Garrett and Sean Cornish, former contestants on Channel Seven’s reality television program House Rules - are loving life after the show and enjoying their newly renovated property. It’s true, Amy and Sean would be happy anywhere – so long as they were together – but they particularly love the Nundah area. “Everyone is so friendly – Sean and I can see ourselves here for a long time,”Amy said. It’s easy to see why the couple was such a hit. Willing to give anything a go – they approach life with motivation, enthusiasm, energy and hard work. “If we got through House Rules, we can get through anything!” she said. With the crazy, challenging experience of filming and renovations now over, things have slowly returned to ‘normal’ for the couple, who now find themselves busier than ever as they WORDS NITA Cameron
build their business: Front Foot Personal Training (FFPT). Front Foot Personal Training offers one-on-one training, classes and boot camps, but it’s the Mums and Bubs sessions Amy runs at Kalinga Park, Clayfield that she is paricularly excited about. “The sessions provide a wonderful opportunity for mothers who struggle to find time to exercise or socialise and allows them to do both at once! All you need to escape the house is your bub and a pram,” she said. Keep a lookout for Amy and Sean’s next venture ‘Amy and Sean’s House’, a blog that will follow their progress as they tackle renovations to the back yard, which was left unfinished due to their controversial exit from the show. To find out more about FFPT visit: www.frontfootpt.com.au email: amy@frontfootpt.com.au or just keep watch for the couple at Jam, one of their favourite local cafes.

Nundah Goes All Out for Art So what do New York and Nundah have in common? A thriving art scene, that’s what! September saw the 9th annual Nundah Village Festival Art Show happen in spectacular style. This edgy suburban art show is the brainchild of three local ladies with a passion for art and desire to see local talent exhibited. Annie, Suzie and Nerida launched the festival from a vacant room of the Prince of Wales Hotel in 2004. Over the years, the art show has grown in size and stature and now resides in the Norris Motor Group Honda workshop on Sandgate Road. Paul and Michelle Norris have been great supporters of the art show and their generous sponsorship has allowed it to continue. “One of the great things about the new space is that we have cars on all the hoists in the workshop, and have the art on display underneath, which we believe makes a suburban art show just that little bit different,” said Annie Reid. The Nundah Village Festival Art Show has provided many artists with the opportunity to present their works to the public
with over 230 paintings and sculptures on display this year. The shows organisers are already looking forward to next year’s show which will be it’s 10th, with new pieces from artists such as Starr, Abramo Papp, Pete Martin, Margaret Goldsmith, Nicky Carey and plenty more. It is expected to be bigger and better than ever.

The Warm Weather is Here Already “Out of sight, out of mind”, then the warm weather hits. You are left feeling confused as to how in only a few short months you ended up looking like the Michelin Man. The piling on of winter weight and the frantic mission to lose it is an annual event. It is a behavioural instinct that is etched in our DNA. To store and hold fat for the winter months. This was a necessity for our cavemen ancestors, as food became scarce; the storing of fat was paramount for survival. In the modern age the abundance of energy rich food and poor discipline, launches our bodies into a fat storing hyper drive. The weight loss formula is very simple, energy in vs. energy out. You need to consume less food than your body requires to function.
Key Weight Loss Tips: • Drink plenty of water • Eat regularly, (as many greens as you like) • Exercise at least 3 times a week Rip into shape for summer with Outfit 24 and get 12 Casual Visits worth $120 for just $12! Goodbye Danny, Hello Mary
Past Present & Future WORDS By JOHN HUGHES - LOCAL PSYCHOLOGIST
It’s happening. Now. Right now. What do you notice? Here the sun awakens, the weather’s warming and the scene changes. What a wonderful time of year! What thoughts are popping in, feelings visiting or sensations arising? Take a pause. Notice. You don’t have to of course. You could grab a thought and think of all the ways that horrible thought might be true or come true– all the things you ‘should’ have, ‘would’ have, ‘could’ have done. Really play with that thought. Do you feel better or worse? Does it give you strength? Does it help you take action? It’s hard to stay in the present sometimes isn’t it? Hard not to fret about the future or regret the past. Anxiety is sneaky like that. It fools you. We get caught up in our thoughts about the future as though they are events happening now. Perhaps for you it is exam time and assignments are due, or maybe it’s your tax paperwork. We all have periods like this – brief moments in our total life span but a marathon-task of successive little moments. Life is much more manageable in ‘moments’. Focus on what’s actually happening right now rather than worrying about what might happen. Best wishes for whatever fills your moments. And if its exams - good luck!
For 28 years Danny ‘the Hairdresser’ has called Nundah Village home but all good things come to an end. Being one of the longest serving business in the village, not seeing Danny’s cheerful smile in his store will take a bit to get used to. It’s not all bad news though. Mary has taken over from Danny with a newly renamed O’Hair Barbers taking over Danny’s old quarters, bringing a splash of Irish fun with her. Whether it’s a haircut, buzzcut, shave or moustache maintenance, Mary ensures everyone leaves with a smile. Give Mary a warm welcome to the village, pop in for a trim and a chat. INTERNATIONAL WHITE RIBBON DAY 25th November 2013 WHERE: Carseldine Bunnings WHEN: 8am-3pm In Australia, at least one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner. The victims of this heinous violence are likely to have also endured physical, psychological and financial abuse before their lives were tragically cut short. These victims are not merely statistics; they are wives, sisters, mothers, daughters and friends. We as a community should act against violence whenever we are made aware of it. White Ribbon Day is a global initiative by men to raise awareness of this serious issue in an attempt to stop violence against women. This year the Northside Alliance Against Domestic Violence are getting behind White Ribbon Day with a sausage sizzle and White Ribbon Day Stall at Carseldine Bunnings. If you want to support this amazing cause please come along sometime between 8am and 3pm and make a pledge, grab a sausage, and meet some of our amazing men and women from Qld emergency services and Qld Police Service.

NOTICE OF NUNDAH COMMUNITY SUPPORT GROUP INC
2013 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Monday 21st October 2013 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start AT NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE 14 STATION STREET, NUNDAH PHONE: 3260 6820 FAX: 3260 7127 EMAIL: admin1@nundahcc.org.au
Multicultural Development Centre Since joining the fabulous Nundah community early this year, MDA is now enjoying the groove of our new northside home and all of those things that make Nundah such a vibrant and special place to be. We recently had the great pleasure of setting up shop at the Nundah Village Street Festival in September, where we invited festivalgoers to make a pledge as part of the ‘Racism. It Stops With Me’ campaign. The name of the game is simple; the campaign, an initiative of the Australian Human Rights Commission, invites all Australians to reflect on what they can do to counter racism wherever it happens. Participants then write down their pledge on a placard, and have their photos taken with the option of having their picture uploaded to the Commission’s website. MDA staff, volunteers and the campaign itself were warmly embraced by the Nundah community, with over 100 locals joining up and making their very own pledge!
Light refreshments will be served after the meeting. Please come and support our Association and our work. RSVP for AGM attendance and catering purposes by Monday 14th October 2013 To renew or become a member of the association please complete a membership form. This is a requirement for anyone whishing to vote and/or join our Management Committee. If you would like to nominate to be a member of the Management Committee please contact the Centre for a nomination form or if you are unable to attend and would like a proxy to vote.

Interest Rates Remain on Hold With auction clearance rates at their highest levels in years, the Reserve Bank of Australia has decided to keep the official cash rate on hold at 2.5 per cent. This news should help to keep interest rates low and support the continuing trend toward a more confident property market. Several economic factors could be influencing the RBA’s decision to keep the cash rate on hold
at its current low level. These include the high Australian dollar impacting export markets, falling commodity prices and unemployment growth. Meanwhile, home buyers are clearly enjoying the current lower interest rates, with housing prices Australia-wide indicating a recovery and loads of options available to those in the market for a home or investment loan.

Timing is Everything – Stay Prepared! We are all time conscious, but some are more so than others. Where a property owner and the local market are concerned, remaining prepared is crucial. Our 9 month old son is acutely aware that 5:30am is nappy change and feeding time. That is why my wife and I stay in touch with how many nappies we have in stock and the amount of appropriate food we have on hand to suit his age. Similarly, if you stay prepared with the right tools at your disposal, you will be in a good position to make better property choices, and make the most of opportunities There are plenty of options out there and like many important things in life, not all options will suit you personally. Getting to know the type of services we as property agents offer is a simple process and ironically it is highly valuable even though it is free with no obligation. So what should you look for in a good market report? Firstly, a report customised for you is always the best option. Details, such as the property’s location, the period for sale, its sale price, the land size and comparable property features give a clear
understanding of the property characteristics which are important to its saleability. Next, compare how similar properties in your area are listed for sale. This will provide you with an appropriate snapshot of the market near your property. Finally, be sure to have your agent put it in writing so you can review it alongside last years report. There it is; a simple and painless approach to staying in touch with your market, regardless of whether you are considering to list and sell your home. For an unbiased snapshot of the market near your home be sure to contact me soon. Darryl Finlay – Havig & Jackson As well as a local real estate agent, Darryl is a passionate member of the community.
