Nundah gets The Royal treatment Once known as ‘The Royal English Hotel’, The Royal has re-opened its doors after extensive renovations, unmasking a casual Italian eatery, bar and refurbished gaming room in the heart of Nundah Village. The Royal is serving up Gillian’s famous sand crab lasagne, Italian street food, stone-baked pizzas and hand-cut antipasto. There is even a menu for the ‘bambinos’. At The Royal, service is quick and food is honest, with guests watching on as chefs put on a show using a feature vintage slicing machine. The new gaming room, which features a bar, tea, coffee and snacks, has moved to an intimate downstairs setting adjoining the restaurant, with easy access via the carpark. Hotel Manager Simon Rayner said the reopening of The Royal marked a major milestone for Nundah as a developing culinary destination. “The Royal has brought something really
unique to the area by offering great Italian food in a much-loved Aussie pub,” Mr Rayner said. “The setting has a really comfortable, casual feel, and the menu has all your old family favourites. “It’s really a case of grabbing a chair, ordering a beer and digging into some honest, affordable Italian.” The Royal has customer parking available at the rear of the hotel, as well as street parking, and is in close proximity to Nundah train station and bus stops, near the Toombul Shopping Centre terminal. The Royal is currently trading all day, with the kitchen open from 12 – 9pm for lunch and dinner.
Twisted idea becomes a reality Words by Fiona heyman Over the past few months, something has been brewing in Nundah. It’s organic, unscented and a must-have for any man – available only at Slightly Twisted. BurlyWood beard balm is the creation of Patrick Boucher, who saw a gap in the market for beard grooming products. “The idea behind BurlyWood grew with Nicholas’s beard,” Mr Boucher said. “There were very few local products available for beard grooming and we saw an opportunity.” Patrick uses organic Shea butter and Moroccan oil to make the all-natural beard balm that won’t clash with your cologne. “At the moment there is only the beard balm, but we hope to evolve into a full range of beard grooming products,” he said. “Our next creation will be a moustache wax and we are looking at a few other products such as shaving oil and beard conditioning oil.”
For more information or to keep up with the latest news from The Royal, ‘like’ the Facebook page www.facebook.com/TheRoyalHotel or visit www.ourhotels.com.au/theroyal

MAX N BOO
Words by Nita Cameron
Everything has an expiry. Claire Campbell realised this and decided to make a big transition in her life. After years working in retail and administration management, she knew the time had come to pursue her own business. Her boutique store, Max n Boo opened earlier this year. What will we find at the store? A welcoming atmosphere, clothing for men, women, children and babies, giftware, home wares and furnitur - Something for everyone! What inspires you? My customers - I want to make them happy; also my children and growing my business. What has been your biggest challenge? It took a while to realise that this is actually mine! I’m not working for someone else. Also, I am educating myself on what my customers want and getting to know the market. Where did the store’s name originate? Max after my dog - he is always with me and he’s actually become a bit of an icon. Visitors to the store look for him now; Boo is for my children - family is my priority. Why Nundah? I live locally and Nundah is full of excitement and wonder. There is a feeling of anticipation about where this development is going. Claire’s store, Max N Boo, is located at 1277 Sandgate Road www.maxnboo.com
How will the Federal Budget affect our Property Market? It’s no secret that this year’s federal budget has prompted mixed opinions! BUT how will the budget affect our housing market? For a sector that seems to be increasingly important to our economy, there wasn’t a great deal of attention or detail that will directly impact the housing arm: ·A new clause enables pensioners who sell their home to hold a portion of the sale in a special account so it’s exempt from pension means testing. ·A new 10% holding tax has been introduced for overseas investors who purchase properties that cost more than $2.5 million. Looking outside the box, a big infrastructure spend should have a positive effect on local property markets and there was some good news for investors as negative gearing was left untouched. It seems the government is relying on continuing low interest rates, strong population growth, and consumer spending to help a more organic property recovery and to further grow the economy. To find out more, log onto www.youtube.com/clintdevereauxteam and watch my video on ‘Federal Budget and the Property Market’ or call me any time for a chat.

Yellow Brick Road – Variable Loan Awarded Five Star Canstar Rating Yellow Brick Road’s Empower Variable loan (80% LVR) has been awarded a five-star CANSTAR rating – their highest possible rating. CANSTAR Home Loan Star Ratings compare cost and features across home loan products, and five-star ratings are awarded to products that offer outstanding value and features to consumers. Yellow Brick Road’s Empower Variable loan has a variable rate of 4.94% p.a. (comparison rate 4.95%). This product competes with comparable loans from the major four banks, which currently offer an average variable rate of 5.23% p.a. That means that, on an average $400,000, 30-year loan, Yellow Brick Road customers would save $71 per month and $25,000 over the life of the loan. Out of the 31 CANSTAR five star rated loans in the residential variable category, only five were major bank home loan products. “Consumers are becoming savvier and are using research services to compare home loan products,” says Yellow Brick Road Nundah Branch Principal Casey Jarrett. “People can see the value in shopping around and looking outside the major banks. Yellow Brick Road is here as an alternative, and it is our job to help consumers get the best possible deal on their home loan, with personal service to match.” Yellow Brick Road Nundah can help you get the best value from your home loan. It’s hard to believe the year has flown by and we are now already in June. The latest funding round of the Caring for our Community program has been announced and I’m very happy to confirm three local Nundah organisations will receive grants valued at up to $5,000. The Nundah Community Support Group, Mates4Mates and Nundah Community Enterprise Cooperative will receive the grant to purchase essential equipment. I also recently opened the local RSPCA Million Paws Walk. Held in Nundah, the morning saw many local residents come together to raise funds for a great cause. I have always supported greater commercial and residential development within our Nundah Shopping Centre and I look forward to seeing the final result when local leases have been filled. The new vibrant-looking community is wonderful to see. I hope you are enjoying your time in our community.

Brissie cycling scene gears up to fundraise $1.5 million More than 6,000 cyclists are tackling the cool early morning temperatures in flattering lycra, all in aid of Brisbane’s most popular charity bike ride, the Enerflex MS Brissie to the Bay. After incredible community support in recent years, the fundraising goal for the Sunday 22 June ride is an incredible $1.5 million which will help change the lives of Queenslanders living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Over 23,000 Australians are living with this incurable, lifelong disease for which there is still no known cure. MS attacks a person’s brain and spinal cord, causing irreparable damage. Sadly every working day, five new Australians are diagnosed with the condition. This year to help the MS cause, riders can choose from one of four courses; the 10km, 25km, 50km or the more challenging 100km course – and ride to help fund vital research into finding a cure for MS. MS Queensland CEO Lincoln Hopper said the Enerflex MS Brissie to the Bay is always a fun event and is perfect for anyone with a bike - riders of all ages and experience. “While the 50km and 100km distances
provide a challenge for those serious riders, the 10km is a favourite with families and, best of all, a number of people living with MS are able to participate – so there really is a distance for everyone,” Lincoln said. A huge contingent of people who have been affected by MS through family or friends will also be forming teams to raise money for the cause that is so close to their heart. “We’re aiming to raise $1.5 million this year - if each participant raises just a couple of hundred dollars, we’ll reach our target and be able to pump more money into vital services for Queenslanders living with the daily struggles of this incurable disease,” he said. The average age of an MS diagnosis is just 30 and it is three times more common in women than men. So why not get on your bike and help out this great local cause? To register or donate to this year’s Enerflex MS Brissie to the Bay, visit www.BrissieToTheBay.com.au or call MS Queensland on 07 3840 0828. Registration starts at just $20. The Enerflex MS Brissie to the Bay is proudly supported by Enerflex, Di Bella Coffee, Avant Card, Scody, Planet Cycles, Australian Bananas, 97.3FM and Magic882.

Cooking up the change! Words by Nita Cameron When Tanya Bartolini left the corporate world to pursue her love for cooking, people thought, “She’s crazy - she’s lost her mind.” Undaunted, she followed her heart. After spending 14 years in accounting and finance, Tanya left it all behind to pursue her passion – and what began as a humble cookbook, swiftly evolved into a business. In 2013, Tanya wrote: ‘Blending the Cultures’, which captured her family’s Italo-Australian history and their beloved recipes. She now features regularly on 612 ABC radio, runs her website, ‘The Kitchen Bench’, and has established ‘Cooking for Change’, and online community encouraging other home cooks. From its inception, Tanya’s cookbook seemed to resonate with people. She said, “I started to think, I can really make a difference”. It was Tanya’s desire to encourage others to seek out and discover their own family recipes and to spend time with loved ones. Tanya said, “Access to information about food has increased through TV shows and the internet, but people are cooking less. Food unites families - it’s important to stop, sit and talk, to slow our lives down and be together.” With her strong focus on family, it is no wonder Tanya was approached to be an ambassador for the Queensland Purple Recipe Initiative, as part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) which occurs on June 15. WEAAD aims to raise awareness of elder abuse, and encourages people to speak out against it. Visit Tanya’s website for mouth-watering recipes: www.thekitchenbench.com.au For more information on WEAAD visit www.weaadqld.com

Supporting groundbreaking cancer research Members of The Rotary Club of Nundah recently visited Dr Fiona Simpson in her laboratory at the UQ Diamantina Institute in Brisbane. Dr Simpson’s research looks to reverse resistance to some current cancer therapies and could be expanded to enhance therapies such as Herceptin in breast cancer. After personally losing loved ones to cancer, Dr Simpson said that the researchers in the lab are here to save lives, not careers. Without the charitable support Dr Simpson receives from The Rotary Club of Nundah and other people, this important research could not happen.
COMPUTERS 4 KIDS Inc. (C4K) is a not-for-profit organisation making low-cost computers, with Windows Programs under Microsoft licence, available to disadvantaged students and charitable organisations for administration and learning tasks. Over the past ten years, C4K has distributed to PNG, Solomon Islands and Fiji. Recently, computers were also sent to Manus Island and South Africa. C4K also encourages Student Work Experience for schools and special job agencies, while refurbishing the computers.
Putting an end to polio The Rotary Club of Nundah raises money to help eradicate polio throughout the world. Friends and family in Australia have been affected by this deadly disease, and Nundah Rotarians support the eradication program as it draws to a close. Since 1985, billions of dollars have been employed towards the worldwide eradication of polio.
Make a Difference with us The Rotary Club of Nundah is looking for volunteers and new members. Come to our Rotary Information Night, 25th June, 6pm at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Property Value Doubles Every 7-10 Years some people have bought property at the right time and then managed to sell it again 7-10 years later for double the value, but this is generally a fluke of good timing, not a rule to use when buying or selling or estimating value of real estate. The reality is far more complex and unpredictable. There are numerous factors that impact on property values. One simple little formula does not hold the answer. It all depends on the individual property, its location and local facilities. Has it been renovated or at least well maintained? Was it purchased at the peak of the market, bottom of the market, or somewhere in between? Have the neighbours always parked their cars on the footpath? These are just some examples of questions that may be asked when trying to assess real estate values. The other part of the equation when realising property values is choosing when to sell. Not all property markets have been as buoyant as the current market is proving to be. There have been some tough times in real estate over the past few years where some sellers may have found it hard realising a profit. If anyone ever tells you your property will double in value over the next 7-10 years, ask them to sign a contract to buy it from you in 10 years time at double the price. I bet they won’t! Remember, at the end of the day, the real value of a property is the price a willing buyer is prepared to pay a willing seller at a given time in an arm’s-length transaction after proper marketing, where the parties had each acted knowledgeably, prudently and without compulsion.

Welcoming new community members to Nundah
THE NUNDAH COMMUNITY LEGAL SERVICE CONTINUES ITS SERVICE
At Nundah Neighbourhood Centre we often have new members of the Nundah Community pop in to find out about our neighbourhood and what’s on. Moving to a new area can be very daunting and quite isolating, especially if you have come from far away such as interstate or overseas. Although we have lots of information about services and programs in the area, we did not have this in a comprehensive format that people could easily take way. Thanks to the hard work of dedicated volunteers and students, Nundah Neighbourhood Centre has developed a new publication specifically designed for new members of the Nundah Community. The publication is a booklet packed with lots of useful information on activities, services and events in the Nundah area.
Hundreds of lawyers marched in the 2014 Legal Walk in Brisbane to raise funds for, and celebrate legal assistance to Queensland’s most disadvantaged and marginalised people. The walk was led by Queensland’s Chief Justice and Attorney-General, and members of the Nundah Community Legal Service (NCLS) also participated. In a speech after the walk, we were pleased to hear the Attorney-General, Mr Jarrod Bleijie announce the extension of funding to Queensland community legal centres, including ours at Nundah.
Nundah Neighbourhood Centre officially recognised as a Welcome Hub with Multicultural Development Association (MDA)
Nationwide fiscal constraints have impacted on the amount of funding. However, the NCLS looks forward to continuing our delivery of effective legal service to the Brisbane’s North community. We do this through advice and referrals sessions provided at:
The Welcome Hub is a partnership of resources and opportunities between MDA and Nundah Neighbourhood Centre. This is in recognition of our acknowledgement that everyone wants to feel welcome and safe, especially when they are settling into a new country, a new culture or even a new community. Since 2012 MDA has been working with local community organisations and faith groups to welcome newly arrived refugees into local communities. Welcome Hubs might offer an English class, a sewing group, a shared meal, a playgroup, a craft group, a community garden… a doorway into local community life. Sometimes they offer welcome and support while people are in transition in their settlement journey; sometimes they offer a welcoming space to people who have been living in the community for a long time, but who don’t yet feel connected… Welcome Hubs always acknowledge that welcome can be series of experiences, opportunities and connections. Welcome Hubs acknowledge that multicultural business is everyone’s business. The long term vision is a network of welcoming places which engender and grow a culture of welcome for all.
1. A Wednesday Evening Drop-in Service from 6.15pm, staffed by our Legal Administrator (Artie Dowdle) and volunteer Solicitors and students. No appointment is necessary and clients are generally seen in order of arrival, subject to availability of a Solicitor with relevant experience. 2. A Daytime Service by appointment (9.30am to 2.45pm) telephone 3260 6820. In addition, we actively provide community legal education and look forward to any opportunity to speak to schools, aged care centres and other community groups.
Community grant announcement The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre has also been successful in our application for a grant under the ‘Caring for our Community’ initiative. The funding of up to $5,000 will allow us to progress with our playground upgrade. We thank our local Clayfield MP Tim Nicholls for his consistent long term support for the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Community Legal Service.
