McAndrew Property Group McAndrew Property Group has made it on the 2015 BRW Fast 100 list, debuting at #80. The company has gone through an incredible transformation over the last two years since moving into their new premises in Nundah Village. Scott McAndrew, Director, says ‘It’s been an exciting period of growth for Nundah Village, with the new cafes, restaurants and bars to enjoy. This has brought with it not only a new sense of culture and mix of interesting people, but also an increased demand for real estate in the area, which we identified early on and looked to take full advantage of.” 1329 SANDGATE RD, NUNDAH

The ‘Caffeinators’ NUNDAH RESIDENTS are spoilt for choice with cafes - and one coffee appreciation group knows them all. The ‘Caffeinators’ have spent the last seven years visiting Nundah’s coffee shops. Now they’ve put together a list of all the coffee venues within 5km of Nundah - and there are 100 places on the list. Nundah residents Geraldine and Paul started the group with just three friends meeting at local cafes. Now, up to 10 friends meet each morning. “The group started when I first retired,” says Geraldine, “and I was overseeing the building of our house. I was meeting my builder for coffee every morning to discuss the build. When another friend retired we started having coffee regularly, and as other friends retired our numbers grew.”

“We mainly visit Nundah coffee shops. It has everything we need without having to go outside the Village. Of the 100 coffee shops in and around Nundah we have been to 97.” Geraldine says the group rates coffee shops based on convenience and parking, coffee quality, service, ambience and ‘x factor’. Geraldine and the ‘Caffeinators’ have enjoyed watching the changing landscape in Nundah, and it is a much-discussed subject at their morning catch-ups.

Made with love in Nundah.

L to R: John, Paul, Geraldine, Paul and Keith

“I have been involved in local community organisations since 1977 and I was so pleased with the tunnel diversion of Sandgate Road so that the Village could retain its atmosphere. The high-rise developments have had a huge impact with younger people moving to the area, which has seen an increase in coffee shops, restaurants, speciality stores and fitness centres.”

Geraldine says that the ‘Caffeinators’ have no plans to change their morning routine. “Each morning we catch up on Village gossip and current affairs. We enjoy catching up at other times, for dinner, movies and other activities. Having this group has helped all of us settle into retirement and we are fortunate to have formed close friendships.”

As the owner/operator of The Skin & Beauty Suite in Northgate, Eva prides herself on offering the best products and service to her clients and is passionate about sharing her knowledge of beauty with her clients. “The best skincare tip I can give is to use sunscreen - especially living in sunny Queensland! “The sun is the main cause of ageing, so I advice my clients to choose a sunscreen that contains both mineral and physical sun-blockers for the best protection.” Eva enjoys keeping up to date with the latest skincare and beauty news and can see the emerging trends for 2016.

“In skincare, I’m already seeing a big focus on results-orientated skin treatments. Clients are skinsavvy and researched. “They are shifting from fluffy facial treatments and focusing on skin resurfacing, microdermabrasions and active resurface treatments where the results are immediate. Clients want a plan and a path to achieving results in their skin and I love going on that journey with them.“

The New Year’s Resolutions

Buying Defence Housing

If you’re wanting to get fit or stay fit, you have lots of options to achieve that. Ask yourself these few questions about your current or planned exercise regime, to make sure your resolution lasts beyond January 2016.

There are some fantastic advantages in defence housing, and one of the major drawcards is that it’s a worry-free investment, DHA property is a passive investment, meaning investors are buying into a long term product that requires little management and responsibility by the investor. Routine maintenance and day-to-day management of the property are taken care of as part of the property care service. Also included is a lease end restoration that insures the property is returned in good order. The major appeal with this type of investment is the lack of vacancy risk. Regardless of whether your property is tenanted, DHA will cover your rent. However, there are some downsides you should be aware of. The management fee is 16.5%, which is much higher than the normal management fee of around 7-8%. All homes are sold with a lease-back clause (up to 6 years), you can sell your property mid lease but you need to understand that the buyer will have to take on that continuing lease until it ends. Finally, geographically you are limited to where you can buy a property. They are near defence bases in all states and territories across the country. If you’re looking for a hassle-free long-term investment and you’re happy to pay the extra fees then this could be a smart option.

Do you enjoy it? Physical activity can and should be a joy, not a punishment. Whatever you do, make sure it brings a smile to your face. If you enjoy it you’re far more likely to stick with it. Will it help you BE better or just LOOK better? Focus on improving health, happiness, confidence, mobility and strength - the looks will take care of themselves. Your appearance should only ever be a side-effect of what you do. Is it a lifestyle change or a quick fix? As tempting as they may be, don’t get fooled into Biggest Loser style shortcuts and bikini body transformations they’re the fitness equivalent of yo-yo dieting. In this case, slow and steady does win the race. Real results aren’t quick and quick results aren’t real. If you can tick these boxes you’ll be more likely to stay the course and get results. If you didn’t score so highly on the above questions, don’t fret, just look at some other options. Don’t know where to start and need some help? Just ask. LO C AL H ISTORY

Cadogan House Medical Centre celebrates Golden Anniversary THE CADOGAN HOUSE MEDICAL CENTRE celebrated 50 years in Nundah on the 15 November 2015. The building, which is over 80 years old, was previously the Nundah Private Hospital. In 1933, the landscape was very different, with a dirt path leading to the building and a local pineapple farm located nearby. When the Hospital closed down, Dr Newton Chalk, a local pediatrician, purchased the building and established Cadogan House in 1965. Dr Chalk saw a need for patients to have more convenient access to medical services outside the City, so he invited specialists, pharmacists and general practitioners to Cadogan House. At the time, specialists were mostly located at Wickham Terrace in the city and it was difficult for many families and residents to travel in for specialist appointments and treatment. Cadogan House flourished in Nundah, with residents traveling from all over Brisbane to visit. Roz Smith has worked at Cadogan House for over 30 years and believes that people visit Cadogan House now for the same reasons they did in 1965.

“Patients come to Cadogan House for the convenient location, the free parking and the range of services available. Although the specialists have changed over the years, there is always a variety of services offered at Cadogan House.” Roz says that the community knows Cadogan House well and the staff enjoy getting to know patients who attend for treatment. “We have patients tell us that they were born in this building or had their tonsills or appendix removed. Some adult patients tell of how they used to see Dr Chalk when they were children.” As the building has heritage significance, the major refurbishment and extension of the building in 2002 was a costly and long process as the roof tiles, windows and brick work needed to be in keeping with the original structure. “Visitors are pleased to see that the historical elements of Cadogan House have been preserved and enjoy seeing the historical images that feature in the hallways.” The building is now able to accommodate more services with 25 visiting specialists, general practitioners and various allied health servoces in the Cadogan House Specialist Suites, including an audio clinic, pathology, sleep clinic and a café.

L & L Film Productions

CELEBRATE EVERY DAY Win a Christmas Feast!*

L to R: Lauren and Leticia

Loving Nundah sat down with Lauren and Leticia from L & L Film Productions, a Brisbane-based film company specialising in creative business content, community funded events, not-for-profits and social media marketing. Lauren lives locally and has produced videos for the Nundah Village Street Festival and Ultra Cafe.

Just imagine not having to worry about your Christmas catering... Have it all prepared by experts and delivered to feed 20 people! Simply spend $20 and present your receipt/s at Customer Service to enter. *Terms & Conditions apply, one entry for every $20 spent, combined receipts accepted, ends 4pm 13/12/15 see www.toombulcentre.com.au.

What do you like most about your job at L & L Film Productions? Leticia: I love working with people. My passion for all creative arts has always come from the collaborative efforts. Often we bring people together to tell a story or promote a message. There’s nothing like being surrounded by creative and passionate artists all with a shared vision. Lauren: I love the layers in film. A lot of people don’t see all the effort that goes into every single inch of it. Its like painting, but instead of having a 2D space and a brush with a thousand colours, you have movement, you have performance, you have emotion – and its all still on that 2D platform at the end, but its intrinsic. Leticia, you recently attended the Cannes Festival – how did this experience influence you? Leticia: Cannes was breath-taking; the energy of the festival was quite surreal. For me it reignited a lot of passion, again it comes back to the idea of being surrounded by like-minded people. The entire place felt like it was pulsing with a creative energy, everyone you walked past had a spark. What’s been the highlight of your career? Lauren: I would have to say starting L & L. There is something about knowing that we started the business despite all the odds. We can stand back and know we did something hard, and it was worth it. It’s an amazing feeling to know we are now in the position to tell any story we can dream up. Leticia: I would have to agree with Lauren, I never imagined wanting to try and start something myself. The classic dream of Hollywood feature production runs through the core of most film-lovers. It’s certainly a whole other game to start it all from scratch. What I think I am most proud of is our drive to be a voice and stand for what we both value most. What’s next for L & L Film Productions? We have a few big trips coming up in 2016, which is exciting, and hopefully some more work here at home. We can confidently say that our goal is to continue working here in Brisbane. Brisbane is beginning to thrive because of the talented people that live and work in this city and we are so proud to be a part of that. www.llfilmproductions.com /llfilmproductions

St Joseph’s Primary School Centenary Celebrations ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY School in Nundah is celebrating its Centenary in 2016 by looking at the school’s rich history and sharing memories from past students and teachers. Much has changed since the school opened its doors in 1916. School preparations started on December 15, 1915 when four Sisters of St Joseph arrived by the steamer ‘Aramac’ to establish the first Catholic school in Nundah. On January 24, 1916, Archbishop Duhig declared the school open and welcomed 81 students who were enrolled in the first year.

Now, the school welcomes over 170 students each day and has grown to accommodate the increasing Nundah population. Kerry Latimer, Principal of St Joseph’s Primary School, says that at the time, the school was the most northern of the city Catholic schools. “Children walked from Nudgee, Banyo, Northgate, Hendra and Chermside to attend school. Many came by train from suburbs on the Petrie train line some distance away.” In the early days, children enjoyed similar studies to the current St Joseph’s students, including singing, painting and drawing. However, students in 1916 also focused on plain and oriental needlework, bookkeeping and

shorthand. “Our current students are eager to learn about the school’s history and what school was like for their parents and grandparents. We are learning about many past students who have had their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews attend the school. It is wonderful to hear about the family connections at the school in the last 100 years.” Kerry says that the current students at the school will spend the year learning more about the school’s part in the history of the local area. “Our school has been a constant presence within the changing face of Nundah. We look forward to a bright future and continuing our mission of providing quality 21st-century education for local families.” The Community of St Joseph’s Primary School would like to invite past students, staff, families and friends to take part in the Centenary celebrations on Sunday May 1, 2016. The school centenary will be shared with the Sisters of St Joseph and the parish community as they celebrate the centenaries of St Joseph’s Convent and the appointment of the first Parish Priest, Fr Jordan. The Archbishop Mark Coleridge will celebrate mass with the community at Corpus Christi Church at 9.30am and then a Family Fun Day will follow, with the opportunity to share memories and see historical displays. St Joseph’s Primary School is located at 16 Leslie St, Nundah

A few minutes with Adam Allan ADAM ALLAN IS USED TO juggling a busy workload and family commitments - and now he’s also running in the next Brisbane City Council election. Adam, a father-of-three, decided to run for Councillor of the Northgate Ward to give back to the local area.

“I want to put a stronger focus on small business and building a stronger local community,” says Adam. “This is a great area to live in and I want to make sure it continues to be a great place to raise a family, run a business and retire to.” Adam was born in Brisbane and has enjoyed seeing the area of Nundah evolve into the thriving hub it has become. “I think Nundah is evolving as a community and we’re seeing more and more great restaurants and

cafes open up, encouraging people to spend their leisure time locally. People all over Brisbane are realising just what a great place Nundah is to live and they want to be part of our community.” Adam currently works in social impact investing in his strategic and commercial advice company, but still manages to find time to enjoy the local area. “An ideal day would be an early walk with the dogs along Kedron Brook, followed by a coffee at one of the local cafes and maybe a late breakfast or lunch. The Royal is great for a delicious Italian meal in the evening – and don’t forget the newly opened Fitz + Potts!” Adam credits his supportive family for allowing him to run in the next election and is grateful for their support. “A house of teenagers, young adults and a working wife means that life is full in our household, but we all help and support each other.”

CENTRAL TO AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY is social inclusion: the “fair go” with justice being available to all. Legal problems rarely exist in isolation, with individuals affected by economic and political uncertainties, social and cultural concerns compounded by day-today worries such as paying expenses, jobs, caring for loved ones; fractured relationships and domestic violence. It is easy for individuals to feel lost in the daunting legal process with complicated, jargon, forms and procedures. Lawyers “know the system” but private ones are often expensive while government legal assistance has limited resources. Despite need, many cannot access legal help.

At the NCLS, we help break the cycle of hardship and despair by providing all in the community, but especially the most disadvantaged and marginalised of Brisbane’s North, access to justice through free, quality, local, accessible, often “triage” and sometimes “last resort” legal service. We do this through a through our longestablished weekly Wednesday drop-in advice service staffed by dedicated volunteer lawyers (many with specific expertise) and students, together with an employed senior generalist solicitor who sees clients in longer daytime appointments. Like other community legal centres, our service is not meanstested and takes a holistic collaborative approach, providing effective information, advice and practical referrals to specialist legal, nonlegal and multi-disciplinary services.

THE WEDNESDAY EVENING DROP-IN SERVICE This service is staffed by our Legal Service Administrator (Jo Money), Volunteer Solicitors and Students. It opens at 6.15pm but Intake Sheets are taken from 5.30pm. No appointment is necessary with clients generally seen in order of arrival subject to availability of a Solicitor with relevant experience. The last service for 2015 will be December 9, 2015 and it will recommence on Wednesday January 27, 2016. THE DAYTIME SERVICE The Daytime Service is by appointment from Tuesday-Friday 9.30am - 2.45pm. Phone 3260 6820. The Daytime Legal Service ends on December 17, 2015 recommencing on Tuesday January 12, 2016. For lawyers and students wishing to volunteer their services to NCLS, please contact Jo on 3260 6820. Induction will take place at 6.30pm on Wednesday 20 January 2016. We also provide community legal education, especially to school and university students and to seniors and any requests for us to provide these may be made to Jo on 3260 6820. The NCLS looks forward to assisting our community in Brisbane’s North during 2016. Eugene H White – Principal Solicitor.

A Special Thanks AS WE COME TO THE END of another year the staff and Management Committee of Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Community Legal Service would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and peaceful holiday season. We would like to give special thanks to the Nundah community which provides so much ongoing support to the Neighbourhood Centre. This support has included; donations such as material for the sewing group, toys for playgroup and financial donations to assist with programs such as our domestic violence program. Local businesses have also played a significant role in supporting the Centre and I would like to particularly acknowledge those businesses which have provided sponsorship and donations for events such as the Art Show and Nundah Festival. We would also like to thank Mozmo Creative who produce the Loving

Nundah Magazine, which includes The Nundah Spirit pages, for their continued assistance in informing the community of what is happening at the Centre. Also thank you to our local representatives, Kim Flesser; Councillor for Northgate Ward, Tim Nicholls; member for Clayfield, Leanne Linard; member for Nudgee and Wayne Swan; Federal member for Lilley. All of our local representatives have been great champions of the Centre and we greatly appreciate their recognition of the valued role we play in our local community. Finally, thank you to everyone for your ongoing patience while we undergo much needed repairs to our building. We hope to be back in before Christmas and fully operational once again by the New Year. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2016 for another wonderful year of servicing the Nundah community.
