Nundah’s Favourite Day Out After a rainy start to the weekend, the clouds lifted and the sun came out to showcase perfect weather at the 2016 Nundah Village Street Festival. The weekend’s activities started on Saturday, 10 September with the Festival Art Show being held at the Northside Honda Workshop. More than 15 artists were awarded prizes at the Art Show, including Jean Blake who won the Grand Prize, with her landscape piece. As well as winning the landscape category, Jean also won the Hanger Prize. Congratulations to all who took part in the Festival Art Show. The Nundah Village Festival, held on Sunday, 11 September featured the best local food, homewares, fashion, music and performers on the Northside. The festival was officially opened by Hon. Tim Nicholls MP, Cr Adam Allan, Loving Nundah’s Ben Tibben and Nundah’s Town Crier Mark Roemermann. The main stage hosted performances from local schools, including Nundah State School, Northgate State School, Wavell State High School, Aviation High School and Mary MacKillop College. Also on stage were the Chapel 23 Rock Band, Toni Pollard Band, Eva Kohout Dance School and Peebo and Dagwood Clowns, who delighted the audience. Attendees at the Festival enjoyed performances from stilt walkers, acrobatics and street performers, who mingled in the crowd. The Nundah Farmers Markets and PandaPearls’ Sidewalk Sunday Charity Markets were also held, with the Charity Markets raising funds for the Women’s Legal Service and Orange Sky Laundry. Thank you to everyone who attended the Festival and to all businesses who sponsored and supported the event. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!

Closing the Loop at Jam Cafe Jam is working to ‘close the loop’ and create more sustainable practices at its local café in Nundah. Jam has partnered with Not Waste, a company run by Brisbane local Phil Garozzo, which takes yields from local businesses and composts them in farms and backyards in the area. This compost is then used to grow more food, which can end up back at the participating businesses. “Not Waste is about empowering cafes to realise their potential for social and cultural change around food and supporting the people who live and breathe food - the growers,” says Phil. Head chef at Jam, Geoff Abel, said it was important to participate in the program to make the café more sustainable, reduce their carbon footprint and support local farmers. “Jam will be recycling coffee grinds, eggs shells and fruit and vegetable scraps and these items will be turned into compost and used to grow more food at local locations,” says Geoff. Visit www.instagram.com/not.waste for more information on closing the loop. Jam Café | 3/1208 Sandgate Road, Nundah |

How can yoga support strength and cardio training? If you’d asked me a couple of years ago, I’d have said yoga wasn’t my thing. I’d taken classes here and there but instead of feeling enlightened, I felt lost, stiff and bored. I was far more at home on the tennis court or lifting weights in the gym. But I persisted and yoga is now a core part of my training regime. Like weight training, yoga is about slow, controlled movement. Yoga poses stretch and strengthen the muscles, and lubricate the joints, making it the perfect activity on active recovery days (professional sports players swear by it!).
I’ve noticed a number of positive (and unexpected) benefits for my strength and cardio training: • Shorter recovery time • Reduced risk of injury • Longer, leaner muscles • More effective breathing • S trong core and health spine • Better flexibility, agility and range of motion I am more focussed in my approach to training, and know when it’s time to ramp up the intensity or call it quits. On your next recovery day, try it for yourself and see what impact it has on your results in the gym. www.vitalitahealthandfitness.com Phone Sam on 0400 287 154 or email sam@vitalitahealthandfitness.com
Celebrating 24 years in the Local Area Dudley Leighton and his team at Future Auto Northgate have seen the changing landscape in Nundah and Northgate, after being based in the local area for 24 years. Originally opening at Ryans Road in Nundah, Dudley and his team have now been located on Toombul Road in Northgate for the past 19 years. “We love the location here on the northside. We’re close to the city, rail, bus and the airport. But the best bit about being located in Northgate is the people we get to meet,” says Dudley.
The Future Auto Northgate team specialises in logbook servicing, electronic diagnostics, common rail diesel, air conditioning, general servicing, brake and clutch, suspension and steering and safety certificates. “It’s our team that makes the difference - we have a group of experienced, energetic, pleasant mechanics who always have the customer in mind. We have great customers and enjoy the varied (and challenging!) work they bring us.” Future Auto Northgate | 39 Toombul Road, Northgate | Ph: 3260 7577 northgate@futureauto.com.au | www.futureauto.com.au Made with love in Nundah.
Why 70s Units Rock! Driving around Nundah and other suburbs in Brisbane you may notice a number of older style unit blocks. Some of them may not be the most attractive architecture to look at, but there is a lot to love about them. However, with so much attention being focused on constructing new apartments to stimulate the economy and encouraging our younger generation to make use of the increased ‘Great Start Grant’, these classic units have been forgotten. There are a lot of reasons why 70s units rock and buyers should look at them with a lot of confidence.
They are an affordable option for young singles and couples trying to get into the property market and a solid investment for any long-term, property investors. If you work out a price per square metre rate, they are generally below intrinsic value and well below new construction. Calculating a net return based on investment, owners are currently boasting approximately 4%, which is much better than a term deposit, plus you have the benefit of capital growth over a period of time. These 70s units offer awesome bang for your buck, so the next time you see one, don’t look past it because you may miss an excellent opportunity.

Bathroom Styling We’ve all endured that cringe worthy moment when unexpected guests arrive on the doorstep and the first thought that pops to our mind is – OMG the bathroom is a mess! Let’s talk about some simple and tasteful ways to add interest and elegance to your bathroom: • Carefully chosen accessories, such as beautiful glass jars and canisters, are the perfect way to functionally store your bathroom essentials. • Bathrooms can seem quite clinical and cold, so inject some life with a plant, succulent clippings or flowers. • Trays instantly make the area feel organised and grounded. Marble trays are very on trend, adding a touch of opulent style. • Add some lux by using a branded hand wash. Not only does it look great, but your guests will love the special treat. • Add accents of warmth and texture by including natural wood accessories. Texture and interest can also be added through beautifully detailed mats and towels. • My favourite ‘must have’ is a beautifully scented candle. Perfect to light when entertaining guests or when soaking in a hot bath at the end of the day. Leading the Way in Light Therapy Nundah Village Family Practice is leading the way in Photobiomodulation (PBM) Therapy - the first providers of this treatment in Queensland. PBM is a light therapy that uses LASERS and LEDs to stimulate the body’s immune cells. Through the application, inflammation is mitigated and tissue regeneration is promoted. Dr Catton introduced the treatment to Nundah in late 2015, with Leilani Wong coming on board as a specialist.
“PBM is a non-toxic, non-invasive, effective and painless therapy for the treatment of many ailments, including headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, wounds and rheumatoid arthritis,” says Leilani. “The most common conditions we see in the local area are osteoarthritis, acute ankle sprain, gout, frozen shoulder and tendonopathies,” says Leilani. Leilani has just returned from Toronto, Canada, where she engaged in further training and development with the world’s leading research clinics. “I am looking forward to using my recent training in Canada to incorporate PBM in our clients’ treatment plans.” Nundah Village Family Practice | 1262 Sandgate Road, Nundah

Friederike Kuehn
After a difficult and time-consuming experience migrating to Australia from Germany, Nundah local Friederike Kuehn decided to open her own business to assist people migrating to Australia. “After meeting my partner in Australia, I decided to migrate from Germany to stay here. To be able to stay permanently in Australia, I had to go through 4 different visa subclasses, which was a time-consuming experience,” says Friederike.
“I started Your Migration Network in 2013 to assist people migrating to Australia and used my personal experience to create an easier process for my clients.” Whether you’re an individual or family looking to migrate permanently to Australia or a business looking to employ skilled workers, Friederike can help guide and support you through this process. “The Australian immigration process can be very daunting and confusing. The difficulty of applying for some visas is often underestimated. I work with clients to guide them through the process and assist with all necessary documentation,” says Friederike. “I love my job – it is a privilege to work with people all over the world and make their dreams of migrating to Australia possible.” Your Migration Network | 0450 684 979 www.yourmigrationnetwork.com.au “My experience with Friederike was extremely professional, reliable and friendly. The Tapioca Garden Project Students at Torrens University have rebranded and relaunched a Nundah café with help from the local community. Paige Hodkinson and Juliana Ribeiro became involved in the project as part of their Commercial Design Studies course at Torrens University. They selected a local café in Nundah, Sweet Cilli, and put together a new design concept to revamp the café and relaunch as Tapioca Garden.
Paige and Juliana worked with local businesses to organise donations of products and labour as no budget for the renovation was available. Owner of the revamped Tapioca Garden, Ana Maria, was thrilled with the new design and overwhelmed with the response from generous suppliers. The new café will feature Brazilian specialties, including vegan, gluten and dairy-free tapioca pancakes, coffee and bagels. Tapioca Garden also features a Community Art Exhibition in the café where students and postgraduate artists can display and sell their artwork. Bold New Menu Be Bold Nundah has launched a new menu, with a variety of vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and organic options available. Anthony, owner of Be Bold Nundah, is excited to launch the new menu, which features more breakfast and lunch options, as well as desserts and snacks. “Our aim has always been to bring healthy, fresh and delicious food to Northside locals,” says Anthony. “Our Vegan Nachos, featuring corn chips, spiced braised beans, vegan cheese sauce, salsa and guacamole has certainly been a favourite!” Anthony and the team at Be Bold Nundah are passionate about coffee - and their close relationship with their coffee farmers.
“Our organic coffee tastes amazing and we are proud of our direct relationship with the hardworking farmers on Tanna Island in Vanuatu,” says Anthony. “We sourced this coffee because of its amazing taste, which is due to the location of the coffee bean farms. Tanna Island has an abundant water supply and highly fertile land, which produces top quality beans.” Be Bold has a Direct Trade Agreement with Vanuatu farmers, so there is no middleman, making the process of bean to cup honest and rewarding to the people on Tanna Island. “So every coffee you drink helps support the livelihood of the farming community.”

Dreaming of Pizza Growing up in Italy, Carlo Povegliano always dreamt of opening his own authentic pizzeria. After moving to Australia to be with his wife Leil, a Brisbane northside local, Carlo worked for several years in popular Teneriffe pizzeria, Beccofino. Keen to make his dream a reality, Carlo and Leil jumped at the chance to open Pizzalunga da Carlo and serve authentic Italian wood-fired metre long pizzas.
Carlo is passionate about serving authentic Italian pizzas, which are available in one metre, half metre and 33cm round sizes. “To ensure our pizzas are authentic, we imported our wood-fired pizza oven direct from Italy. This oven can fit our signature metre long pizzas and has a rotating base to ensure even cooking,” says Carlo. Carlo and Leil are excited to bring their unique pizzas to northside residents. “Nundah is definitely the foodie capital on the northside. We are excited to serve amazing pizzas to the vibrant Nundah community.” Pizzalunga da Carlo | 3 Aspinall Street, Nundah | 07 3266 9828 www.pizzalunga.com.au | /pizzalunga Carlo, Leil & their daughter

What’s Happening at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre
Thank You The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre has faced many challenges over the past few years with increasing costs and no increase in ongoing funding. To address this, staff and volunteers at the Centre have been actively seeking support from our community through fundraising and corporate sponsorship. Some of our fundraising activities this year have included the Nundah Festival and the Community Art Show, which raise a small amount of money towards direct services in the area of domestic violence and family support.
We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and willingness of Nundah businesses to give to the vital services the organisation provides to our most vulnerable community members. In particular, we would like to acknowledge Energex who gave a generous donation, Mary McKillop College, which has offered practical assistance through their social justice program, and other local businesses who have also contributed. We are also excited to announce a newly formed partnership with The Norris Motor Group, who will provide ongoing assistance and support to the Centre for our community lunch, emergency relief and drop-in services. As a long-standing well respected business, we feel very privileged to work with the staff at The Norris Motor Group in delivering these services. In particular, we would like to acknowledge Courtney Norris who has been the driving force behind the partnership and who brings her own experience and knowledge in working with vulnerable families and children. We will continue to keep you updated on the community and business support we receive and how we are using the resources given to support the local Nundah Community.
Looking for a local venue for a Christmas party? Culture in the Kitchen The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre is currently running a series of Culture in the Kitchen activities, which is a celebration of the many cultures that are a part of our community.
Remembrance Day Memorial Service
These activities provide an opportunity for one group to share their culture by way of a cooking demonstration, music, cultural celebrations and traditions.
Thank you to Brisbane City Council who provided the grant to fund the project.
Most recently the Bhutanese community cooked a wonderful meal for everyone to share, followed by music, dancing and stories about their way of life.
Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch Inc will hold a Remembrance Day Commemorative Service in Nundah Memorial Park at 10.30am on Friday 11 November 2016. The Sub Branch welcomes all veterans, families and interested members of the community to attend. This day marks the ‘Silence’ on the Western front, after four years of continuous warfare ceasing at 11.00am on 11 November 1918. For any further information please call the Sub Branch on 3256 7887.
Nundah Festival What a fantastic turn-out this year for the annual Nundah Festival! Once again the Neighbourhood Centre got involved and offered a number of activities in our car park for everyone attending the festival. This year all funds raised will go directly into providing services in our domestic violence and family support programs. The giant slide and obstacle course was very popular with kids of all ages, with many going multiple times over the day. A big thank you to Alicia and Anna, our face painters who worked all day without a break painting fairies, superheroes and animals on children attending the festival. These activities were supported by the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund. The Child Protection Week activities, including colouring in and guessing the lollies in the jar, which
was sponsored by Cloud Legal, were a great distraction for the children waiting patiently to have their face painted and gave the parents an opportunity to learn more about the essential services available to families in the local area. The raffles were also a huge success. Congratulations to the winners who were all very pleased with their prizes. A big thank you to all the people and businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and funds to help make the day a success. In particular, we would like to thank Adam Allan, Councillor for Northgate, Synergy Construction and Industrial Supply Group, Cloud Legal, Tim Nicholls Member for Clayfield, Leanne Linard Member for Nudgee, Wayne Swan Federal Member for Lilley, Bunnings Toombul and Crystal Journey Toombul.
