With the Nundah Street Festival upon us once again, it’s an exciting time to reflect on our unique community.

Sunday September 10 The Nundah Village Street Festival is back – and this year it will be bigger than ever!

After taking out the award for Community Event of the Year at the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Awards, the Nundah Village Street Festival promises more fun, activities and entertainment for Brisbane residents.

The annual celebration will start with a Movie Night at Boyd Park, Nundah on Friday, September 8. The community is invited to bring picnic blankets and enjoy a sausage sizzle and a firework spectacular.

The Festival Art Show will open on Saturday, September 9 at the Northside Honda Workshop, on the corner of Sandgate Road and Wood Street. Locals can view the entries on Saturday and Sunday from 10am – 3pm, with the Festival Art Show Soiree being held on Saturday, September 9 at 6.30pm.

The Nundah Village Street Festival will be held on Sunday, September 10 from 9am – 3pm. Visitors can enjoy live music, entertainment, stallholders, jumping castle, kids rides, street entertainers and performances from local schools and groups. Dine in at one of the local cafes and restaurants, or enjoy a bite from the many stallholders on the day.

The Nundah Farmers Markets will be open from 6am – 12noon on Sunday as always, with a variety of fresh produce, flowers, crafts, food trucks and more.

After flooding caused damage to one of the surgery rooms, Cameron and Mark took the opportunity to upgrade the area with brand new modern equipment.

“We would like to thank our clients for their patience during the renovations. We are pleased to now offer our patients a more modern experience,” says Mark.

Cameron also enjoyed some quality time away from the clinic in June, after his wife Vivienne welcomed their first child, Elizabeth.

With Cameron back in the office and the renovations complete, Mark and Cameron are focusing on the latest advances in dental technologies and procedures for their patients.

Inspiring a Love of Science With a desire to encourage a love of science among students, Brisbane Northside local Steve Liddell has created one of Australia’s premier science productions.

Steve launched Street Science after several years of teaching in Brisbane Northside schools.

‘I loved working in schools and I saw an opportunity to provide more hands-on opportunities in science so that children and adults could really engage,’ says Steve.

Steve started Street Science by doing science demonstrations at schools, and it steadily grew to shows at Queen Street Mall, National Science Week events and the Brisbane EKKA.“We find parents, students and teachers love the demonstrations,’ says Steve. ‘Often teachers don’t have the resources to do what we can do, so we can bridge the gap. Plus the kids have so much fun while they are learning!’

Street Science has expanded to offer school incursions, science parties and community performances.

Steve looks forward to continuing to expand the show interstate and encourage a love of science among Aussie kids.

65 Roses Art Prize Paint with a Purpose

75th Anniversary

On average, one Australian child is born with cystic fibrosis every week. It is the most common life-shortening genetic condition in Australia. There is no cure.

The 65 Roses Art Prize, organised by Cystic Fibrosis Queensland, aims to give emerging artists the opportunity to paint for a purpose.

The Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch will host a Memorial Service to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Milne Bay on Sunday, 27 August. The service will be held in Nundah Memorial Park, corner of Bage Street and Buckland Road, Nundah, commencing at 10.00am.

Students are asked to submit a single rose composition in any medium on a 30.5cm x 30.5cm canvas. A selection of entries will be exhibited in Brisbane City Hall from 14 September, prior to winners being announced at the 65 Roses Gala Ball on the 7 October.

Battle of Milne Bay

All veterans, their families and members of the community are invited to attend.

Any family members wishing to lay a wreath during the service are asked to contact the Sub-branch on 3256 7887 or email nu07770@bigpond.net.au.

The free competition is open to Year 7 – 12 students, with entries closing on the 7 September. There is over $1,200 in cash and prizes to be awarded.

Nudgee Beach Wheelchair Project The Nundah Lions Club recently became aware of a need for a specialised wheelchair at the Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre.

Working with other local Lions Clubs, including Bracken Ridge Central Lions and Brisbane Inner North Lions, Nundah Lions Club was able to raise the funds to purchase a chair that would allow students to access the mud flats and beach.

The chair assessed as the most suitable has the capacity to be used by students of varying sizes and uses large, balloon type wheels to support the occupants weight while on sand.

The local Lions Clubs raised $3,132 for the specialised chair, with The Australian Lions Foundation matching the donations and contributing $3,132.

On 13 June the local Lions Clubs were able to present the Nudgee Beach Environmental Education Centre with the wheelchair.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE

Hire this Space for your event Earlier this year, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre launched Platform 14, an exciting new event space in the heart of Nundah Village.

Platform 14 is a multi-functional laneway, available for hire by the local community. It is a great venue for celebrations, events, launches or functions and provides a fun and vibrant atmosphere.

Unlike other venues, a kitchen is available for use, which allows hosts to bring food and drink to lower the cost of events. All funds collected from the hire of this space go directly back into providing services and support to Nundah and the surrounding community.

Community Composting The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Legal Service has partnered with the Brisbane City Council to develop a community composting scheme. This allows kitchen scraps that once went in the bin, to become nutrients for soil. A large component of what is collected through Brisbane bins is food waste. By composting this food waste, it reduces the amount of landfill, reduces our carbon footprint, and creates nutritious soil for our gardens.

This program is supported by the Brisbane City Council, as well as a team of dedicated volunteers, who manage the compost and the community garden.

Registered participants of the scheme receive a free kitchen caddy from the council to collect and transport the food waste to the composting site. Following the signage, the scraps can be disposed of easily and will then turn into a resource for the community.

Our composting facility can be found at the back of our centre, at the rear of our car park.

To register for the composting scheme, head to the Brisbane City Council’s website and search for ‘Community Composting.’

The development of this space took many months of fundraising, planning, and hard work from staff and volunteers. Platform 14 was designed by Melinda Taylor and built by Scott Frost, who gave their time and expertise so this space could come to life to be enjoyed by the whole community. The Platform 14 street sign was donated by Mark Roemermann, making the laneway a landmark in its own right.

@ShareMyShoes with Toombul Centre During July, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre supported the Share My Shoes community initiative, which raises much-needed funds for Australia’s largest children’s education charity, The Smith Family.

A large collection shoebox was placed in the reception area of the Centre and in several locations across Australia with locals asked to donate a pair of shoes. Every pair of donated shoes will now be sold through The Smith Family’s retail stores to help fund education programs for disadvantaged young Australians across the country.

For those who didn’t have a pair of shoes to donate, Mirvac offered to donate $1 to The Smith Family for every shoe picture posted on Facebook or Instagram using @sharemyshoes.

The Centre thanks everyone who donated shoes or uploaded a shoe picture to raise funds for this program.

Journeys: A Group for Women The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre will be providing a free, confidential eightweek group program for women who have experienced violence and/or other forms of abuse in their intimate relationships. This group will be facilitated by two counsellors and will combine therapeutic and educational components.

The group will address such issues as:
