Boomerang Bags Create a ‘Sew-lution’ to Plastic Bag Usage A new community group has formed in Nundah, which aims to be part of the ‘sew-lution’ to reducing single-use plastic bags. Boomerang Bags is a QLD-based group that engages local communities to sew reusable bags with recycled materials. Kylie, the co-founder of the newly-formed Nundah group, is excited to share the Bring Your Own Bag message in the local area.

‘Through Boomerang Bags we start conversations, make friends, up-cycle fabrics, and work towards shifting to a more sustainable revolution of re-use,’ says Kylie. Boomerang Bags Nundah have planned two sewing bees to be held in October and November at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre. ‘Each Boomerang Bag is handmade by volunteers using donated materials,’ says Kylie. ‘Bags can be made solo at home or with a group, and sewing skills are not essential!’ Boomerang Bags Nundah 0412 615 620 (Rachel) |

What is a Physiotherapist?

Government’s tax deduction changes

Physiotherapists are the experts in human movement. They are highlyqualified health professionals who have extensive study in musculoskeletal conditions. Physiotherapists also have extensive knowledge of neurological and cardiorespiratory conditions.

The Government announced its intention to deny a tax deduction for depreciation on existing plant and equipment in residential premises as part of the 2017-18 Budget. Currently, the Bill is before Parliament and has not yet received Royal Assent. If passed, the proposed changes will impact on any taxpayers purchasing an existing property as an investment property on or after 7.30 pm on 9 May 2017.

The goals of Physiotherapy: • Prevent & repair injury • Increase strength and mobility by decreasing stiffness and pain • Improve quality of life

GPs refer more patients to physiotherapists than any other healthcare professional.

After this date, a taxpayer will only be able to claim a deduction for the decline in value of depreciable items if they: • P urchased the asset directly themselves (eg. they purchased and installed a new washing machine); or • They bought a brand-new property (eg. an off-the-plan property).

Why choose Physiotherapy? Physiotherapists work in partnership with patients, medical and other health providers to help optimise health and movement. A physiotherapist will assess the biological, psychological and social factors impacting your condition. It is this holistic approach to assessment and management that ensures all aspects of your pain, injury or condition are considered. Call 3191 4455 to speak with an expert for more information.

Watch this space for any updates on whether the proposed legislative changes are passed by Parliament.

EXPERT ADVICE

Ciao Gelato Takes the Cake When one scoop isn’t enough – Ciao Gelato has you covered with the launch of their ready-made gelato cakes and cupcakes. With a variety of vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options, there is something for everyone.

PROPERTY with Mark Roemermann

Considered off-market sales? Most agents will tell you the best way to sell property is the traditional way: take great photos, matched with appealing marketing copy, a sign out the front and make sure you have the biggest ads (because big ads get big prices … don’t they?), market to as many people as you can done well, you’ll get a terrific result. This will get your place sold and the agent benefits with greater profile paid for by you (which is why they’re trained to do this). Is this legal? Is it ethical? What is right? What price (financial and emotional) will you pay? Call me if you want to know what to watch out for.

The ready-made range of ice-cream cakes include: • Ferrero and Chocolate • Strawberries and Cream (gluten free) • Peanut Butter Chocolate (vegan, dairy free and gluten free) • The cakes are available in small for $35 (serves 6 – 8) and large for $45 (serves 10 – 12). Ciao Gelato also allows you to build your own custom cake at ciaogelato.com.au using any flavour in the cabinet (ten days’ notice required). If you’re after just a little taste of the goodness, then you can’t go past the gelato cookie dough cupcakes. Available in a variety of gelato flavours, white or dark chocolate, and with vegan options, you won’t be able to stop at one. Photo of the Week Comp! Check out /ciaogelato_nundah for your chance to WIN a weekly $10 gift voucher.*

Is there another way to sell without doing all this? Can you achieve a premium result and you only pay the agent if they deliver a result you are happy with? In Nundah recently there have been over $10 million in sales that weren’t advertised. Many of which sold for astounding prices. Off-market sales can reduce the stress and fuss associated with property sales. In the hands of a skilled passionate local agent an off-market sale might be right for you. The Road to PyeongChang – Nundah’s own Paralympian Nundah local Simon Patmore is in training for the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in South Korea. Simon, who was awarded a Gold Medal at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and a Bronze Medal at the 2012 London Paralympic Games for para-athletics, has switched his focus from athletics to snowboarding. “In 2014, the International Paralympic Committee announced an upper limb category in the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games,” says Simon. “Even though I had never snowboarded in my life, I made the decision to give it a go.” Since shifting his focus, Simon has been crowned the ParaSnowboard World Cup Gold Medallist, Para-Snowboard World Cup Silver Medallist, and was awarded the SSA Para-Snowboarder of the Year. Simon is now in training for the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in South Korea and aims to become a summer and winter Paralympian.

“It’s hard work being a full-time professional para-athlete, however with the support from both my family and local businesses, I’m able to chase the dream,” says Simon. Simon has been working with Stage 6, a local health and fitness centre, to prepare for the 2018 Paralympics. “I’ve been working with Matt at Stage 6 Health and Fitness to improve my agility in unpredictable and high-pressured situations. Not only has this improved my performance during a competition, but I’ve become efficient with my movements in day-to-day physical activities.” To keep up-to-date with Simon’s journey, visit www.simonpatmore.com.au /simonpatmoreathlete

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE

Sexual Violence Awareness Month Sexual Violence Awareness Month is held in October to raise social consciousness about sexual violence. It aims to uphold a clear message that violence will not be accepted within our communities, and provides an opportunity to promote the support services available to individuals who are affected by sexual violence. For further information, visit: www.qld.gov.au and search ‘sexual violence awareness month’.

Latest Centre News The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre has been fortunate in securing funding for three new programs, commencing October 1. These much-needed programs will increase the Centre’s ability to meet the needs of the most vulnerable members in the community.

As part of Sexual Violence Awareness Month, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre will be continuing the clothesline project from 2016. Stringed clotheslines will be hung up in the centre, with blank paper T-shirts for community members to write responses to the theme of consent. The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre will also be participating in the Reclaim the Night rally and march, and will host banner-marking workshops prior to the rally. For further information, visit https://rtnbrisbane.wixsite.com/rtnbrisbane

Dignity First Funding (funded by the Department of Housing and Public Works)

The Dignity First project will assist people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, to access essential needs such as food and toiletries. The Neighbourhood Centre has employed a new Project Worker, Nigel, who is working with a group of volunteers to improve the food relief program, offer extended services and programs, and find creative ways to use The Laneway. This project will run until June 30, 2018.

Community Legal Education Collaborative Funding (funded by the Department of Justice and Attorney General)

The Nundah Community Legal Service has received two years of funding to produce a number of podcasts on topics relevant to older people and people with disabilities. Each month the Centre will select a topic and members of the public will be invited to send in their questions, with a selection answered by one of the qualified Solicitors in a podcast. October’s topic is ‘Rip off traders/ phone companies and other utilities: civil and consumer matters’. If you have a question relating to this topic, send it to cew@nundahcc.org.au

Family Law Program Funding (secured until 2020)

The Palaszczuk Government has announced the allocation of $312,625 in funding for the Nundah Community Legal Service to ensure locals have continued access to free legal services. State Member for Nudgee, Leanne Linard MP, said that the funding has been allocated to support legal services that assist with family law and family violence, which are two areas of law where demand for services is rapidly growing. Ms Eleesa Johnstone, President NCSGI said, ‘This funding represents a significant achievement for our community and for women requiring tailored legal support for domestic and family violence issues. As an organisation we are extremely thankful for the opportunity this affords our service.’

Remembrance Day Memorial Service

Nundah Rotary Club Fundraising The Nundah Rotary Club in Nundah has raised more than $40,000 for good causes since the start of 2017. With a team of just 15 people, the club has organised a range of fundraisers, including sausage sizzles, art unions and the very successful Christmas in July dinner, attended by over 100 people, including the Brisbane Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress. The money raised by the Nundah Rotary Club has supported a range of programs, including: • Local people in need at the Zillmere Community Centre, the Nundah Activity Centre, Computers 4 Learning and Nundah Neighbourhood Centre • Provided women’s care packs to women unexpectedly admitted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital

Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch will hold a Remembrance Day Memorial Service in Nundah Memorial Park at 10.30am on Friday, November 11. This day marks the Armistice that ended the four years of warfare in World War I at 11.00am on November 11, 1918 and honours all who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of Australia. The Sub Branch welcomes all veterans, families and interested members of the community to attend. For any further information, please call the Sub Branch on 3256 7887.

MyTime Support Group in Ascot A MyTime Support Group has opened at the Ascot Community Centre in Brisbane’s North. The support group is for parents/carers of children aged up to 18 years who have a higher level of care because of disability, developmental delay or chronic medical condition. The support group allows participants to learn about services and support available, and to meet with other parents who understand what it’s like to have a child with a disability. A trained leader facilitates the group, with a play helper available at meetings to engage pre-school aged children.

Each term the group has speakers join in on sessions, which may cover topics including speech development, mealtimes, sensory processing and more. This group is designed to support parents and carers – it’s support for you. The group meets fortnightly on a Tuesday during school terms from 10am – 12pm. For more information, visit www.mytime.net.au or call 1800 171 882. Ascot Community Centre, 77 Kitchener Rd, Ascot
