Several Brisbane northside residents and community groups received Lilley Australia Day awards on Friday, January 26. The awards, presented by Hon Wayne Swan MP, recognise volunteers and services in the community. Award recipients included Margaret Nicholas (Nundah/Wavell Girl Guides), Margaret Toovey (Be Uplifted Breast Cancer Charity, Zillmere), Versace Timbers (Virginia) and The CFQ Bookshop (Nundah).
Development application causes a stir A development application in Nundah has caused a stir among residents and visitors. Brisbane based company FTTOA lodged a proposal in January for an eight-story apartment block containing 72 apartments and 12 retail stores, which would be located on the corner of Chapel Street and Sandgate Road. Nundah resident Rachelle Willington launched an e-petition against the development, which had received over 2,000 signatures by the start of February. Rachelle created the e-petition as she believes the development will negatively impact the Nundah community and its village lifestyle. FTTOA spokesperson Jack Jameson said that
they are aware of the community’s concern and intend to retain the village feel in the development. Have your say on the development by lodging a submission at the Brisbane City Council website.

A message from State Member, Leanne Linard MP I would like to thank the community for your continued support at the recent state election. It is truly an honour to have the opportunity to continue to be a strong advocate for our community in the coming term. The new electoral boundaries have now taken effect so it is my pleasure to now represent new areas of Nundah and Wavell Heights, formerly in the Clayfield electorate. A warm welcome to those constituents!
My focus in 2018 is on continuing to deliver road safety and facility improvements at and around our local schools, securing vital funding for our local community services, programs and sporting clubs, and addressing timetable and commuter parking pressures in our local suburbs. As a community advocate, it’s most important to me that the community voice is heard and I will always take every opportunity to hear directly from local residents. My regular free community BBQs will commence on February 24 at ARC Hill Park, Virginia. I look forward to seeing you there or at the Nundah Markets or at a local community event in the near future. Fixing water stains and moulds
Being heard through the noise.
Water stains usually occur due to leaky pipes, old caulking or a problem in the roof. Identifying and fixing the cause of the stain is the primary goal. Once the issue has been resolved, use a primer over the stain before applying a topcoat. For water-based paint, use a latex-based primer and for enamel paints, use an oil-based primer.
If you’re in business (or life) it’s entirely possible that people aren’t listening closely to you any more. With so much noise, so much clutter... hoping that customers, prospects and vendors will stop what they’re doing and listen closely to figure out what you mean is a recipe for frustration. So, instead of insisting that people listen more closely, you could speak more clearly. That’s what great design and great copy do. The strategy comes down to being there with clarity in your customers Head, Heart and in the Moment they need you.
Tip - use a multipurpose product, which acts as a primer, sealer and undercoat all at once. Mould, on the other hand, occurs due to high humidity, condensation and lack of proper ventilation. A simple solution is to use bleach diluted with water to scrub off the mould. Be sure to wear a protective gear while cleaning. To avoid the mould formation in the future, use a paint that is specially formulated to resist moisture and mould. Having issues at your home? Call or visit to get 10% off paints and primers until March 31 2018. Speak to our friendly team in-store for more advice. Do you suffer from headaches? Research has shown that the cervical spine (neck) plays a key role in headache and migraine pain. The close relationship between the head and neck means dysfunction in the neck can be felt as headache and migraine pain due to a shared nerve supply. It is important to note that the brain stem extends into the cervical spine. When the brain stem becomes sensitised due to sensory overload, this results in a cervicogenic headache. Four tips for identifying headaches caused by the neck 1. 2. 3. 4.
Location: on one side or can swap sides Headache associated with neck pain/stiffness Medication doesn’t work as it would normally Headache with prolonged postures
Five tips to advance your property goals 1. Keep an eye on the market Research is key. What’s happening with interest rates? Which localities will be more desirable in the future? And why? What government policies or incentives will add value to property? 2. Reassess and refinance Many lenders have better loans than they did last year. A lower rate, allows you to pay down your loan faster and build equity. Average borrowers could save $2,000/year by switching loans. 3. Invest in your home Intelligent improvements can add considerable value to your property. A lick of paint, flooring upgrades, a touch of landscaping can all help. 4. Make the most of your equity You may have time-assisted usable equity in your property. This equity could enable you to fund an investment property or add value by improving renovations.
Our Physiotherapists have completed further training in the assessment and treatment of cervicogenic headaches. We utilise a range of different techniques including: manual therapy, dry needling and specific motor control exercises to treat and resolve headaches. 5. Supercharge your deposit Saving to buy a home? Give yourself the best chance. Budget and find ways to reduce spending on niceties you can live without. If you save a 20% deposit it should help you avoid paying mortgage insurance. Mark Roemermann & Andrew Emms Phone Mark on 0413 877 230 or email markroemermann@atrealty.com.au

Locally made soft furnishings Opulent Soft Furnishings, located just off Sandgate Road in Nundah Village, is a family-owned business specialising in custom-made curtains, blinds and upholstery. Brett Small, owner of the design studio, enjoys being able to create custom designs for clients, using the best Australian materials.
“As we do all soft furnishing manufacturing onsite, not outsourced, we are able to maintain and control the quality of our products,” says Brett. “This helps us work within our client’s budget and taste requirements.” Brett is already noticing new trends emerging in furnishings for 2018. “This year, trends will focus on stylish simplicity, earth elements with splashes of bold colour and design in statement pieces,” says Brett. “Our clients are well educated with social media and home renovation television programs. They know what they want and are prepared to take more risks with colour and design.” Opulent Soft Furnishings has on-site parking and will be introducing new product lines throughout the year. A clean green Nundah The 29th Clean Up Australia Day will be held on Sunday, March 4. With over 3,000 clean up sites registered across Australia, and sites registered in Nundah, Wavell Heights, Hendra and Nudgee there is no excuse for locals not to take part. We asked Nundah local and eco warrior, Rachel Long, what Nundah locals can do to become more environmentally aware. Rachel, who documents her clean up efforts on her Instagram page @memoriesandmud, shared her top five tips to help our local area.
Five Tips to become more environmentally aware: 1. E ducate yourself. Grab a copy of the Brisbane City Council Recycling Guide for Households from the Nundah library, your local council ward or via the council website. Visit one of Brisbane City Council’s environment centres.
Rachel Long, local eco warrior
2. Ditch disposables and invest in items that you can reuse. Start with one or all of the ‘big four’ – coffee cups, shopping and produce bags, bottles and straws. Find out which local cafes accept clean reusable cups for take-away orders by asking them - some places even offer a discount if you bring your own coffee cup. Be prepared for the Queensland bag ban, which begins on 1 July 2018. Remember to take your own reusable shopping bags, box or carry basket instead of relying on the single-use bags provided in-store. Did you know that there are also plenty of reusable produce bags available to carry loose fruit, vegetables and dried goods in? 3. Set a good example for others by ensuring you put your rubbish in the right bin. Go a step further by picking up litter that you find whether it’s in your street, at work, on the beach, near the park, in the school playground or along the local bikeway. Consider volunteering with Keep Queensland Beautiful, Sea Shepherd, Take3 or a local catchment group.
Espresso Train offers a 50c discount if you BYO cup
“Ditch disposables and invest in items that you can reuse. Start with one or all of the ‘big four’ – coffee cups, shopping and produce bags, bottles and straws.” Nundah Neighbourhood Composting Hub (photo: Adam Allan)
4. Recycle your kitchen scraps. Consider starting a compost bin, worm farm or joining the community composting hub at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre. 5. S upport local community groups and organisations such as Bikes4Life (located at the Nundah Activity Centre), the Cystic Fibrosis bookstore, second hand stores and Boomerang Bags Nundah. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE NUNDAH NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE
War Memorial Refurbishment THE NUNDAH NORTHGATE RSL Sub Branch Inc is pleased to advise that the application for funding support for the project to refurbish the War Memorial in Nundah Historic Cemetery through the Queensland Anzac Centenary Spirit of Service grant program has been successful. The project will see the existing Memorial refurbished and provide an appropriate and respectful location for the community to honour and remember those who have served and to hold our annual Anzac Day Dawn Service. Work on the project will commence after Anzac Day 2018 and will be completed prior to Remembrance Day. This project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government.
Seeking Donations WITH NO EMERGENCY relief services located in Nundah and the immediate surrounds, it is often the local Neighbourhood Centre that people turn to in times of crisis. To respond to this ever-increasing demand, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre has set up a pantry to store food, toiletries and other much needed items to give to people who are in need. We are asking our local community to help out. If you are able to donate any of the following items please contact the Centre and arrange a time to drop off either during or outside of office hours. Please do not leave items at the front door when we are closed, as these items can often not be used due to health and safety issues. • Pantry items, including tinned food, rice, pasta, sauces, cereals, biscuits, long life milk etc. (all items need to be in date) • Toiletries, including women’s sanitary items, soap, toothpaste, deodorants, men’s toiletries etc • Baby items, including nappies, wipes, baby food and unopened tins of formula
Brisbane North Community Legal Service CENTRAL TO AUSTRALIAN society is social inclusion: the “fair go” with justice being available to all. Legal problems rarely exist in isolation as individuals may also be affected by economic and political uncertainties, and social and cultural concerns. These issues can be compounded by day-to-day worries like paying expenses, jobs, caring for others, fractured relationships and domestic violence. It is easy for people to feel lost in the daunting legal process with complicated jargon, forms and procedures. Lawyers “know the system” but private ones are often expensive, while government legal assistance has limited resources. Despite need, many cannot access legal help. At the Brisbane North Community Legal Service (BNCLS), we help break the cycle of hardship and despair by providing all in the community, but especially the most disadvantaged and marginalised, with access to justice through free, quality and local legal services. The recent change of name from the Nundah to Brisbane North Community Legal Service better reflects our clients’ broad primary geographic area. We do this through either our long established weekly Wednesday drop-in advice service staffed by dedicated volunteer lawyers (many with specific expertise) and students together or with the senior generalist solicitor who sees clients in longer daytime appointments. In addition we have a newly funded dedicated Domestic
Violence and Family Law Clinic. The Wednesday Evening Drop-in Service opens at 5:30pm for intake. No appointment is necessary with clients generally seen in order of arrival, subject to availability of a Solicitor with relevant experience. The Daytime Generalist Service and Domestic Violence and Family Law Clinic are seen by appointment. Please phone 3260 6820 for more information. Like other Community Legal Centres, our service is not means-tested and takes a holistic collaborative approach, providing effective information, advice and practical referrals to specialist legal, non-legal and multi-disciplinary services. However, donations are always appreciated and a receipt will be provided for donations over $2.00, which are tax deductible. Lawyers and students wishing to volunteer their services to BNCLS are always welcome. We also provide Community Legal Education, especially to schools, seniors and other groups. For further information, please contact Jo on 3260 6820. The BNCLS looks forward to assisting our community in Brisbane’s North during 2018.
The CFQ Bookshop wins Community Service Award THE CFQ BOOKSHOP in Nundah was awarded the Ted Tremayne Memorial Trophy for Not-for-Profit Community Service at the Lilley Australia Day Awards on January 26. The Ted Tremayne Memorial Trophy is awarded to a not-for-profit organisation to recognize the important contribution made to its own members and to the community at large.
We are also seeking donations of old blankets, quilts and wadding for our Sewing Ladies who use these as fill for the quilts they make for women and children who have escaped domestic violence.
The CFQ Bookshop, located on Ryans Road in Nundah, is a volunteer-run second-hand bookshop with all proceeds going directly to Cystic Fibrosis Queensland. The Bookshop runs frequent fundraising events, story time sessions and books clubs.
Thank you for your help!
