King of Cakes flagship store opens at Circa One The new King of Cakes store is officially open and Nundah residents are in for a treat. Situated at the Circa Nundah Village near the train station, King of Cakes is also only minutes from Brisbane CBD. It is the perfect location as customers have been clamouring for the famous bakeshop to open a store on Brisbane’s north side. It is the third King of Cakes café and bakery and offers the same German goodies that people have come to expect. Proprietor and owner, Wolfgang Kelke uses traditional artisan baking methods and a team of
European pastry chefs. The recipes have been handed down through generations of Kefke’s family, and with his own secret blend of spices and creative flair. You’ll be enjoying a little piece of Germany with every bite. Unique products include classic German breads like Bavarian sunflower and sauerkraut bread; bretzels, a baked snack twisted into a knot shape; Gugelhupf, rich doughnut-shaped teacake; the ubiquitous Black Forest Cake; and the crowd favourites Pischinger Torte and Death By Chocolate. With authentic German trimmings and Bavar-
ian atmosphere, each store also offers German mustards, chocolates, cold cuts, and plenty of delicacies direct from Europe. Di Bella coffee has partnered with King of Cakes at the Nundah store, as Wolfgang believes that exceptional baked goods should be complemented by exceptional coffee. And along with that goes exceptional service, which is exactly what you get at King of Cakes. It’s a German taste extravaganza in your own backyard. These Boots are made for Workin’ it Who decided that safety boots had to be boring? Stacey Head of Wavell Heights wants to make sure women can take their feminine side to the construction site. Stacey came up with the idea for ‘she wear’ safety work boots and accessories while visiting a building site. A nail pierced her thong, and Stacey was inspired to create a range of safety gear for women. Prior to starting ‘she wear’, Stacey had a

New name and new brand for Toombul Centre Centro Toombul is now just ‘Toombul’. After the switch to Federation Centres, who operate the centre – Toombul Centre have made a clever and logical move to simply call the centre ‘Toombul’, the colloquial name that is used to refer to the centre. In a very real way, the name change gives the brand back to the community. Look out for the new signage with the Federation Centres logo.

Welcome to the Village, Cookoo Chicken Coffee Connoisseurs why ARE locals are loving Nundah’s newest café? Despite only being open since October, café startup The Power Station Co at Circa has quickly developed a reputation for outstanding coffee and customer service. The food stacks up too, with the famed banana bread having a reputation all of its own. Based at Go Health Club, as the café’s name suggests The Power Station Co’s mantra is all about refueling and recharging according to co-owner and head barista Danny Canfyn. “Whether you’ve just finished a workout or you’re grinding through a day at work, a great coffee and fresh, healthy food offers a much needed pick-me-up,” Danny said. Using Mocopan coffee and Maleny Dairies milk was the only choice for Danny, who refuses to compromise on quality. “Mocopan coffee’s not that well known in Brisbane, but once people taste it, they love it. We have a house blend for milk-based coffees and a single origin from Ethiopia for all nonmilk coffees”, Danny said. “Maleny Diaries milk produces a far superior coffee, no question about it. We also have lactose-free and almond milk for those with
special dietary needs.” The Power Station Co offers a range of ready-to-go gourmet sandwiches, wraps and salads, as well as a range of healthy baked goods whipped up by Danny’s wife and coowner, Rhiannan. Paleo, low fat, high protein, nut free, gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free: there’s a constantly evolving selection of guilt-free treats to suit everyone. Perhaps the biggest bonus of all is that everything this cafe offers is underpinned with good old fashioned customer service. The kind of service that happens naturally, by people who are genuinely interested in getting to know you. How many names and orders has Danny memorised in the last few months? “About 150”. The rollout of fresh smoothies, juices and shakes in the coming months will simply add more reasons to love Nundah’s The Power Station Co.

Christmas Message Pastor Peter Cosgrove, North East Baptist
2013 from the desk of Tim Nicholls
Treasurer & Minister for Trade
2013 has been an exciting year for Nundah and I am so pleased to have been involved. It has been a busy year with community groups thriving, the vibrant shopping precinct continuing to grow, and an increase in residential and commercial buildings. I have been working towards improving road safety around Nundah State School and am delighted to announce the installation of flashing school zone lights in 2014. The lights will serve to alert motorists to slow down as they approach the school zone to improve safety for both students and motorists. Recently I also opened the new offices of QSuper, bringing around 85 staff to work in Nundah. I would like to extend my thanks to Sharon Gingell, Simon Penrose and Jo Bottrell for their participation as community representatives for the Clayfield Electorate at The Queensland Plan. I look forward to working closely with Nundah residents in 2014 and wish you all a Merry Christmas and safe and happy New Year. If you would like to contact my office please email Clayfield@parliament. qld.gov.au or phone 3262 8819. Please note that the office will be closed from 23 December to 6 January.
Tim Nicholls, Member for Clayfield, Treasurer and Minister for Trade
It’s that time of year again. December has come and, with it, all the joys of Christmas. But what is the real meaning of Christmas? Is it the gifts under the tree, the lights in the windows, the cards in the mail, turkey dinners with family and friends, and words of “Merry Christmas” to those who we pass? Is this really Christmas? For many people, Christmas is a time of sorrow. They don’t have the extra money to buy presents for their children, family, and friends. Many are saddened at Christmastime when they think of their loved ones who will not be able to come home for various reasons. Turkey dinners may be only a wish and not a reality for some. Yet, Christmas can be a season of great joy. It is a time of God showing His great love for us. It can be a time of healing and renewed strength. You see, Christmas is when we celebrate the gift of the Christ child. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event. They knew this was no ordinary baby. He was the gift of a saviour. This gift brings healing and renewed relationship between us and God. Accepting this wonderful gift brings peace to a life. Love, Joy, Peace is found only in the gift of Jesus. This is real meaning of Christmas.

Giving & Receiving words by John Hughes, PsYChOLOGIST
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Have you caught up with those friends you have been meaning to see? Made plans? Selected gifts? Different things are important to us at different phases of our lives. Would you agree? As a child we are receivers – Christmas means gifts! A second phase enters and we learn other values – and a joy that comes from giving. A third phase enters and we focus significantly on the gift of time. Who might we be spending time with or missing at this time of year? There are years of abundance and years of reflection. In my own family, I sit now with the memories of Christmas crowds as elderly relatives were retrieved and collected, greeted and gathered – home. These relationships still exist in my heart for me, though many have gone home in a different sense. Especially at Christmas I remember a house full of eccentric aunts and uncles and laughter and volleys of food (and plates to wash with the kitchen crew that had its own social scene going). So whether you are celebrating the joy that was, the joy that is, or the joy that will be – I wish you peace. And in a moment of peace, I know I’ll find a quiet time to make a list of experiences this year has brought. Some years it’s things learnt and sometimes events survived. This, together with my memories, helps me feel anchored and realise that, even in my most difficult years, I’m moving forward. I wonder what you might plan to celebrate the time, to focus on and to reflect on to encourage you and yours. This is, after all, a season of hope.

What’s Happening at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre
Community Garden upgrade For those that have dropped by the Centre in the last few weeks, you may have noticed our brand new shed and pergola area at the end of the Community Garden. This new area provides secure storage space for gardening tools and a cool, shaded area for volunteers to do some potting, share a cuppa, or just sit and rest. We are also building some new fencing around the garden area to provide more security to protect the garden from vandalism and theft. Volunteers also have lots of plans to grow climbing plants like beans and zucchini on the new fence which will not only look great but provide even more produce for our lunch and the clients at the Centre. We have also had some new volunteers signed up to care for our garden and, although they have only been at it for a few weeks, great progress has been made and we are really excited about what’s to come. The upgrade and new fencing is thanks to grants will provided by the Brisbane City Council Social Inclusion funding and the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Caring for our Community Grants. We greatly appreciate the ongoing support from the Community and Government for our Community Garden.
Website Redesign We have been very fortunate to secure the volunteer services of Arden Ingari to update our website. Arden is a web developer and graphic designer and has many years’ experience. We are really excited to be getting a new website which will be much more informative and interactive and a great resource for the local Nundah community. If you would like to know more about Arden and the services he provides, please go to his website at www.eastweb.com.au

Have you thought of gifting a White Elephant this Christmas?
GYMS at Nundah Activity Centre (NAC) Golden Years Men’s Shed (GYMS) was established two years ago to support the interests and needs of men in Nundah and the surrounding area. The shed continues to grow and support the local community. GYMS is looking forward to a bright future with open membership, democratic decision-making, increased funding, expanded space, improved facilities and member-driven activities. Nundah Activity Centre (NAC) Presents ‘Golden Canes’ - Brisbane’s First Ever Self-Defence and Personal Safety Club for Seniors 50+ At Golden Canes, age is no barrier to feeling safe, having fun and making new friends. More than just a self-defence club for seniors, Golden Canes embraces three fundamentals: self-awareness, self-reliance and self-esteem. Our goal is simply to build stronger Seniors in body, mind and spirit! We teach our ‘Caners’ how to take control of their environments through situational awareness, while promoting gentle exercise as a way to stay healthy, independent and to prevent physical decline. Golden Caners are not pushovers! We use the Cane or Walking Stick as a versatile and effective tool, not just for walking and stability but for self-defence as well! Classes are run every Saturday morning 8.30am-9.30am at the Nundah Activity Centre, 15 Jenner St Nundah. Cost is a gold coin donation. Our workshops operate on one simple principle: If ALL of us can’t do it, none of us should do it! So please don’t be concerned about your age or fitness level, just bring along a walking stick or umbrella, some comfy shoes and your sense of humour and you’ll have a ball! Bookings are essential - phone NAC on 3266 4500.
The season for giving is upon us and as we all anticipate Santa bringing us lots of presents, it’s a good time to clean out the old to make space for the new. This festive season, consider donating your unwanted White Elephants - those items you no longer need or want but will be of value and use to someone else. The Multicultural Development Association (MDA) on Jenner Street is again running White Elephant Day in December. The day is about collecting donations of your preloved toys, books and teddy bears for newly arrived refugees as they begin to rebuild their lives in our community. It is an easy and wonderful way to welcome our newest Queenslanders and help them have a fantastic festive season by being their secret Santa. You can drop off your donations at our office at 5/2 Jenner Street from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday (1pm to 5pm Wednesdays), before 17 December. We will then create a gift store full of all the wonderful donations for our newest Queenslanders to browse and select items.
Visit MDA’s website www.mdainc.org.au to find out more about our events.
