Nundah Takes The Cake King of Cakes on Station Street in Nundah has been welcomed into the neighbourhood with open arms, literally. You will not leave empty-handed. Master pastry chef, Wolfgang Kelke, is the ‘King of Cakes’ himself, enticing locals with an exquisite cake cabinet and danish display. With two successful stores already open on the southside, Mr Kelke decided that next, he wanted to introduce Nundah to his “home away from home”. The idea behind King of Cakes started 24 years ago with the aim of bringing a piece of Germany to Brisbane, driven by the enthusiasm of customers in the area. “The customers from the northside asked ‘why haven’t you got anything over here?’” Mr Kelke said. “Finally we are where we wanted to be for a long time, in Nundah.” Mr Kelke said that it was a great opportunity to bring the café to Nundah, which has a German Lutheran settlement background. Nundah King of Cakes is the first store that will be franchised, creating a great opportunity for pastry enthusiasts to “become a part of the King of Cakes family”.

Words by Fiona Heyman

Although King of Cakes is currently showcasing a new range of strudels, Mr Kelke said that his personal favourites are the black forest slice and the Esterhazy cake. King of Cakes will soon be inviting customers to join the Royal Cake Club, where points collected from purchases can be redeemed on products. King of Cakes Nundah. Shop 13, Circa Nundah, Station Street. 6:30am – 5:00pm Mon – Fri, 7am – 4pm Sat & 7am – 3pm Sun. Will the Fear of “Sardine Suburbs” become a reality?

Local Stylist - Zoe Hunt We talked with hair stylist Zoe Hunt, who has worked in top-end boutique hair and beauty salons for five years. Zoe now brings her expertise to KikiLee Hair & Beauty in Nundah. What’s the best thing about being a hairdresser? Being able to make clients feel amazing, confident and happy when they step out of your salon. How do you stay up to date with current trends? Hair is a brand of the fashion industry, so I regularly update my product, colour and cutting knowledge.

There is an increased fear that many areas of Brisbane will turn into sardine suburbs. Changes are being made to support our inevitable population growth and guide future residential development. Under the new draft city plan, Brisbane City Council is allowing some suburban properties to be subdivided into 300sqm blocks if they are within 200 walking metres of a centre zone. The proposal applies to properties that are zoned low residential on 600sqm with a minimum 15m frontage. With change comes uncertainty and many residents are asking questions… • How will this strategy impact on where we live? • Is this type of development a viable option? It’s taken people many years to warm to 400sqm blocks, so what does this mean for property prices in the future? To find out more, log onto www.youtube.com/clintdevereauxteam and watch my video on ‘Sardine Suburbs’ or call me any time for a chat.

What is your specialty? Colour creativity and classy blondes. I love the blended effect that I can achieve with my balayage clients – a very popular trend at the moment.

Call Clint Devereaux on 0431 043 556 email clintdevereaux@northsidefn.com.au visit youtube.com/ClintDevereauxTeam

What can you promise your clients? I will work closely with you to create your dream style. How do you want your clients to feel when they leave your salon? Like an ‘It Girl’, with a hairstyle that reflects their personality perfectly. Kiki-Lee Hair & Beauty - 1265 Sandgate Road Nundah, ph 3256 9326.

Gallery 51

Words by Nita Cameron

Sensuous and sumptuous are words used to describe Vicki Corser’s paintings. An artist her entire life, Vicki was 51 years of age when her passion came to fruition and the opportunity arose for her to open her own gallery in Wavell Heights. “It’s been really worthwhile, especially being located in a small community,” Vicki said. The gallery is a space where colour and texture explode and beauty resounds. It has been deliberately designed to provide a relaxed environment that stimulates the senses, incorporating sight and smell. “I love being in here… I want people to breeze in and say ‘Hi’, not feel like they have to buy – just enjoy themselves,” Vicki said. The gallery showcases vivid acrylics painted in a modern, impressionist style, using brushstroke and palate knife techniques. She loves creating pieces with natural themes. Vicki creates many commissioned pieces to suit her clients’ homes, but the gallery gives her a space to display different styles. Vicki runs classes and workshops on demand. Classes are currently held on Tuesday evenings at the cost of $50.00 for two hours tuition (all materials supplied) and she recently had visitors painting as part of a 50th birthday celebration. Visitors are always welcome at the gallery, and come and watch Vicki at work. The gallery address is 202 Edinburgh Castle Rd, Wavell Heights or she can be contacted via email: art@galleryfiftyone.com.au or vicki@galleryfiftyone.com.au.

SassiCoco boutique brings unique on-trend styles Life is happy for Jade MacCallum, owner of SassiCoco Boutique. “It’s impossible not to smile when you’re working among beautiful clothing every day,” she said. The boutique, located in the Toombul Shopping Centre, is named after her daughters, Sassi & Coco (nicknames that stuck), and is home to an eclectic range of pieces. Jade feels that the range reflects her own personal style - which changes with her mood. “One day I feel Boho and the next, Biker Chic. There is definitely something here for everyone.” Having worked in the industry since she was fifteen, Jade knows fashion. She stocks on-trend pieces that are unique. Jade says that when you shop at a boutique like SassiCoco, you are guaranteed items that haven’t saturated the market. The store’s motto: ‘My Favourite Shop’ evolved from the overwhelming response of customers who enjoyed their experience. Jade says “We want people to browse and not feel pressured here.” She knows the impact a great outfit can have. “You feel amazing. You feel good about yourself. There is a spring in your step. I love bringing people through that experience. It’s nice to put a smile on people’s faces.” Stop by to check out their current sale, along with the fun, new pieces in store for this season. Or visit their website to shop online: www.sassicoco.com.au

Be smart about the future now

TOP TEN Tips for Your Super Superannuation is a fact of modern life: the government wants you to save some of your earnings for retirement, and it offers you very generous tax benefits to allow you to build a nest egg. There’s an opportunity to do very well out of super. Here are my Top Ten Tips. 1. H ave a goal: Get on the internet, find a superannuation calculator and see how much you’ll need to the save so you can live the way you want to in retirement. Start with a goal. 2. Be informed: Understand your options with industry, retail and selfmanaged funds. Investigate how the options within your fund invest in different asset classes to give you varied risk/returns. about compound: The compound effect means the interest on 3. Know your capital creates more capital, which means you earn more interest. A regular contribution from your employer further increases this effect. 4. Always Top-Up: When you add top-ups to the employer’s super contribution, the compound effect increases and you have a powerful wealth-growing tool. 5. Be advised: Even one hour with a qualified adviser is money well spent. If you’re starting a self-managed fund, you must have expert tax advice from an accountant or solicitor (SMSFs are regulated by the ATO)! 6. Spread risk: Most Australians are not well served by being 100 per cent invested in cash or equities. Think about diversifying across more than one asset class. This leaves you less exposed to a single economic force or event.

by Casey Jarrett Financial Planner AR: 451310

8. C ut costs: In superannuation, small amounts can make a big difference, so reducing costs boosts your super. The ‘MER’ quoted on each fund is the percentage of your balance paid annually to the fund manager. MERs vary from about 0.7% to 1.7%. On a balance of $100,000, that 1 percent difference means $1000 going to the manager, rather than into your savings. Also, be aware what funds charge you to lodge paperwork and alter investment options – these costs vary considerably. 9. Lift returns: Cash deposits are safe and the first $250,000 is government guaranteed. However, cash has low returns that inhibit the potential compound effect of your savings. Look at alternatives such as fixed interest and bond-hybrid funds. Find where you can get better returns for low risk. 10. P lan your estate: An important part of superannuation is providing for your family. Access cheap life insurance through your super fund, and remember to complete your binding nomination: you get to specify the beneficiaries of your super balance.

7. I nvest according to life stage: If you’re in your twenties, having all your balance in cash will not give you much growth over the years. And if you’re about to retire, being heavy in equities may expose you to too much volatility. Construct a portfolio that is life-stage appropriate, giving yourself a mix of assets that suits your plans and tax status.

Anzac Day, Friday 25th April 2014 Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch invites you and your family to attend your local ANZAC Days Services as follows: 6:30 am – Nundah Memorial Cemetery, Hedley Avenue, Nundah

On Sunday the 9th of March, Panda Pearls held their biggest Sidewalk Sunday with more than 25 stallholders drawing a record crowd. There were a variety of stalls to suit all ages, ranging from homewares to handbags, potted plants to pearls. To top it all off, Panda Pearls had 50% off selected items in store with a red dot sale. People attending the event bought coffees from The Power Station Co. coffee cart and enjoyed a special performance by the Nundah State School choir.

8:30 am Nundah Memorial Park, Bage Street, Nundah

The next Sidewalk Sunday will be on the 4th of May, one week before Mother’s Day! 99 Buckland Road, Nundah. Words by Fiona Heyman

What’s Happening at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre

Goodbye Tracey! It is with sadness that we farewell our Administrator Tracey who has worked hard to streamline the NCLS and assist our Brisbane North community. However, Artie has joined us in that role. He will be known to some already as he has been a volunteer for a couple of years. We welcome Artie to the team!

Nundah Festival Youth of 2013

the Year quest The Nundah Lions Club hosted the Youth of the Year quest at Nundah Activities Centre recently. Young people aged between 15 and 19 are eligible to enter Lions Youth of the Year. This prestigious event boasts many highprofile Australians among the ranks of former entrants, including Kevin Rudd and, Peter Beattie. Through entering the quest, entrants have the opportunity to experience an interview situation in a friendly atmosphere and a chance to practise their public speaking skills. Two students from St Margaret’s School participated in this Club event and guests were treated to some interesting responses to the impromptu questions and also their prepared speeches. The photo below shows the winner, Olivia Duce, with Lion John Reason, and runner-up to the other entrant, Charlotte Adcock. The Club is looking forward to next year’s event, and we hope to see more contestants representing more schools/colleges in the area. For more information, please contact Pat Carbis on 0417 708 262 regarding the quest. The Nundah Lions Club meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at Prince of Wales Hotel, Nundah 6.30pm with a dinner meeting.

“I’m Arthur Dowdle and I’m the new Legal Administrator for the Nundah Legal Service. I’m in my 4th year of a dual Law/Arts degree majoring in philosophy. I have been volunteering here as a law student for the past 2 years, and have recently been appointed to this new role. I am truly excited to help out the legal service and to help move Nundah into the future!”

Community Garden Update

NUNDAH COMMUNITY LEGAL SERVICE COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY LEGAL EDUCATION SEMINARS

The Community Garden has seen a lot of activity since the last report. Five enthusiastic volunteers have been busy restoring the garden beds and the compost area, resuscitating existing vegetable plants, and sowing a new range of vegetables. Where practical, the gardening team grows the vegetables from packet seeds, but occasionally we purchase punnets of seedlings. The main challenge for the gardeners over the last few months has been the extremely dry conditions which required regular hand watering using the Centre’s tank water supply. The dry conditions did affect yields. Despite this, the garden produced quantities of eggplant, butternut pumpkin, beans, sweet potatoes, cherry tomatoes, chilies and a range of herbs, including coriander, chives, basil and mint. The selection of vegetables grown in the Community Garden is mainly aimed at popular staple vegetables generally used in the family home. Choice of vegetables is also aimed at satisfying the needs of the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre’s multicultural clientele and contributing to the Community Lunch which is held at the Centre every Friday at 12.00 noon. Our garden volunteers are now focusing on growing popular winter vegetables and fully utilizing all available gardening space.

The Nundah Community Legal Service will continue to provide a series of collaborative CLE Seminars in 2014. These Seminars provide relevant legal information, along with referrals to other community support programs. Bookings: Email admin1@nundahcc.org.au or phone 3260 6820. This project is funded by Legal Aid Queensland. Upcoming sessions are: Tuesday 29 April 2014 – 5.30pm Neighbourhood Issues & Disputes: - Fences - Trees - Boundaries - Resolving Disputes - Information from the Dispute Resolution Centre Tuesday 20th May 2014 – 5.30pm Family Law: - Divorce - Property Settlement - Parenting after separation - Mediation - Information from the Family Relationship Centre Tuesday 3rd June 2014 – 5.30pm Employment Law: - Unfair Dismissal - Redundancy - Discrimination - Workplace Laws - Rights and Conditions - Information from the Fair Work Omsbudman - Prevention of Abuse

Celebrating the Power of Volunteering! Here at the centre, we have almost 50 volunteers who help the Neighbourhood Centre provide essential services to the community. Our generous volunteers give their time, energy and enthusiasm on a weekly basis, and we would not be able to do what we do without their support. We can’t thank them enough! The 12th – 18th May is National Volunteers week, and we will be finding ways throughout that time to say a massive thank-you to our many wonderful volunteers. We want to acknowledge the enormous input they have had to our communities and our lives. We are always looking for people with great skills and a passion to help the community. If you’re interested in volunteering at NNC, please contact the centre.
