The Scoop on Ciao Gelato After moving to the area, local residents Jane and Indi felt that there was something missing in Nundah. “I have always had a sweet tooth and I was disappointed when we moved to Nundah and could not find a dessert café,” says Jane. “So, we decided to open our own!” Jane and Indi selected a range of sweet treats for the cafe, including handcrafted popsicles, brioche and croissant gelato sandwiches, mini Dutch pancakes and over 24 gelato flavours.

New Health Hub in Nundah Kristie Clarke, Clinical Psychologist, has been practicing in Nundah for the past 11 years, and is expanding her clinic to provide an integrated healthcare service to the local community. “When I started my business KCPsych (formerly KCPsychological) in 2005 the health landscape and the area was very different. But with changes in healthcare needs, and the growth in Nundah it has presented the opportunity to provide a more integrated healthcare service.” Kristie and her growing team have established the Brisbane North Health Hub, a team of local health professionals who work together under the one premise with a vision of providing an integrated and holistic healthcare service to the community. “The Health Hub’s goal is to provide tailored healthcare solutions to meet the specific needs in the community,” says Kristie. “This includes mental health, disabilities, aged care, paediatrics and chronic disease.”

Since opening in late March, Jane has been surprised by how popular some of the menu items have been. “The pistachio, macadamia and ferro gelatos have been popular and the amazing brioche gelato sliders!”

Call the Brisbane North Health Hub on 3128 2225 to discuss your healthcare needs.

FITNESS

Property

with Matt Rutley Stage 6 Health & Fitness

with Clint Devereaux Northside First National Real Estate

Would you rather be healthy or just look healthy? Have you ever asked yourself why people work out? The individual answers will vary but when you distill them all, it’s almost always about health. People generally work out because they want to be healthy and enjoy life as much as possible for as long as possible. Whether the goal is to lose weight, gain weight or look good naked, it all comes down to health. The ironic thing is that much of the fitness industry isn’t interested in health, or even fitness for that matter; it’s about how you look. The marketing and sales techniques, magazines, reality TV shows, the “fitspiration” they’re all based on showing you images of digitally/chemically/surgically altered people and convincing you THAT is what fit and healthy looks like. In reality, fit and healthy can’t be accurately predicted on looks alone. Fit and healthy for one person can look vastly different to fit and healthy for another. There is no cookie cutter template for what a healthy person looks like. A better indication of true health and fitness is how well you move and how physically competent you are. Are you strong? Are you mobile? Do you know how to listen to your body? Are you largely injury free? Just a hint, “six pack” or “bikini body” isn’t the answer to any of those questions. Why not focus on training in a way that actually addresses health and fitness? Let the looks be a side effect. Are Houses or Apartments Better Investments? This argument has been debated for many years with no right or wrong answer. The most important point for any buyer is whether they are looking for a capital growth investment or a yield investment. Sure, it is possible to find an investment that delivers both (the mining boom is an excellent example), but this is a risky strategy…look at the current property climate in these towns now! Traditionally houses offer higher appreciation as the land they sit on increases in value and the more use you can get from the land the more valuable it is going to be. If you purchase an apartment you will see less appreciation because more of the value sits in the improvements, therefore offering better tax depreciation and a higher rental yield. I feel as time progresses, population continues to increase and less house and land property exist due to further redevelopment, apartments in some highly sought after inner city suburbs will follow Sydney’s trend experiencing fantastic capital growth. Just look at Bondi…it’s all about supply and demand. Personally, I am a capital growth investor and like to stick to the old adage of buying the worst house in the best street. Bringing the Magic to Nundah

MAYO Arts Festival St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School will hold their biennial MAYO Arts Festival on May 27 - 28. Celebrations begin on Friday, May 27 with a ticketed cocktail evening opened by the Institute of Modern Art’s Marie-Louise Theile. Continuing on Saturday, May 28, the festival kicks into full swing as visitors are invited to enjoy a range of free and ticketed activities, workshops and performances. Angela Drysdale, MAYO Arts Festival Chair at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School, believes there is something for everyone at the festival. “Guests are able to attend workshops, browse a variety of market stalls, enjoy gourmet food and wine and be entertained by the new and emerging artists and performers,” says Angela. “We encourage our guests to roll up their sleeves and prepare to release their inner artist,” says Angela. “Or simply bring a picnic blanket and relax in the vibrant and inspiring atmosphere.” The MAYO Arts Festival will be held at St Margaret’s at 11 Petrie Street, Ascot. Tickets go on sale May 1 and can be purchased from mayofestival.com.au

Chrissy Byers, a local mother to two, has dreamt of writing and illustrating her own book since she was a young child.

Last year, Chrissy made this dream a reality, self-publishing her first book The Magic in Boxes. The Magic in Boxes is the story of two boys playing in boxes with no limits to their imagination. “I used cardboard boxes in the book as boxes are available to most families, are inexpensive and I loved the message of recycling and being kind to the environment,” says Chrissy. Chrissy credits her close friends for supporting her through the process of writing her book. “My friends pushed me along and gave me motivation when I had setbacks. I want to inspire all children to work hard to follow their dreams. It’s not easy, but boy, what a way to live!” Purchase The Magic in Boxes from www.chrissybyers.com.au

ANZAC Day Services

The Nundah Northgate RSL Sub Branch and the Nundah Northgate Community Link Remembrance Contingent invite the community to join us in the ANZAC Day commemorative services on the April 25, 2016.

The Botanical Trend If you’ve been following any of the recent renovation shows on television or picked up an interiors magazine you would have noticed that indoor plants are back in vogue! “The Botanical Trend” embraces the concept of bringing the outdoors inside and blurring the lines between interiors and exterior spaces. Adding an indoor plant is my number one “must” rule for styling interiors. Plants have a way of injecting energy and life into a room that may feel dull or lifeless. Plants can add structure, visual interest and an organic element to any space. Try to keep your choice of plant to dark green leaves with little to no flowers to achieve a strong and lush look. Once you’ve chosen your plant team it with a beautiful basket or ceramic pot and you are ready to go! You will be amazed at how much one little plant in the corner of your room will transform the whole aesthetics.

LOCAL CATCH UP

My favourite choices of indoor plants are: • Fiddle Leaf • Monsteria Deliciosa • Mother In Law Tongue • Zanzibar • Spathiphyllum • Lush Ferns (any!!!) Chris Curro | The White Bungalow Shop 1a/1208 Sandgate Road, Nundah Phone Chris on 3260 6465 or email hello@thewhitebungalow.com.au

The Dawn Service will be held at 6.30am at the Nundah Historical Cemetery, Hedley Avenue, Nundah. Service, ex-service personnel, community groups and schools are invited to take part in the march prior to the main service. The march starts at 8.15am at the St Joseph Church car park, continues onto Bage Street, Nundah and concludes at the Nundah Memorial Park.

Fun Tip: Don’t forget to forage in your own garden for lush green foliage. Simply cut and pop into a vase to add more lushness to your space!

The Main Service will begin at 8.30am at the Nundah Memorial Park, corner of Bage Street and Buckland Road, Nundah.

LOCAL PROFILE

Autumn is Beautiful at the Nundah Farmer’s Markets Wild Leaf Botanicals Local Nundah resident, Jennifer Rudd, decided to start her own range of skincare products after becoming increasingly concerned about the lack of natural Australian products available. Jennifer has been busy formulating and testing products for the Wild Leaf Botanicals range, and has worked hard to ensure her products are free from harsh chemicals, are cruelty-free and completely handcrafted in Australia. “We source all our ingredients from Australia too – some from small, family-run farms, others in collaboration with local Aboriginal communities,” says Jennifer. “It’s been great to make connections with local farmers and producers.” Jennifer believes that less is more when it comes to skincare. “Mother Nature has provided us with all the goodness we need for glowing, nourished skin, without having to use harsh chemicals. A citrus and peppermint body scrub and lavender balm on Sunday will leave you feeling refreshed and smooth for the week ahead!”

The Nundah Farmers Markets are celebrating autumn fruit and vegetables, with a range of farm-fresh produce available from local suppliers. Juicy pears and crunchy apples are popular amongst visitors, with tomatoes also at their peak - and mandarins are coming into season. The produce is fresh, with some items picked that very morning. With plenty of seating and gourmet breakfast foods, the Nundah Farmers Markets are ideal for an early breakfast bite or a leisurely brunch. See why the locals rave about the markets – with fresh flowers, freerange eggs, meats, artisan breads and gourmet treats, the Nundah Farmers Markets have everything you need to get set for the week ahead. Nundah Farmers Markets are open every Sunday from 6am – 12pm at the bottom of Station St, Nundah. facebook.com/nundahmarkets

Reverse Ink: Erasing the Past Calli Gregor has always admired the artwork and skill involved in tattooing, but knew that tattoo art wasn’t her calling. “I don’t have the artistic skill for tattooing, but I wanted to be involved in the field,” says Calli. “I started Reverse Ink, a tattoo removal company, to show people that tattoos no longer have to be forever.” Calli, a registered nurse, said it was easy to select Nundah as the location for Reverse Ink. “Nundah is a thriving little mecca!” says Calli. “Nundah has great community spirit and everyone is keen to support local industry.” The tattoo removal process is quick and easy – sessions (including paperwork, a chat and the tattoo removal) last about 15 minutes for a 50c piece size tattoo to be removed. More complex tattoos, with more detail and colour can make the process longer. Give Calli a call to discuss your tattoo removal needs today or fill out the enquiry form on the website. Jolie: Making Life Pretty Jolie is a locaL, family-owned fashion and accessories business that has expanded to Nundah for their fourth store opening. Jane Griesel, owner of Jolie, said that Nundah was the perfect location for their store. “Nundah is quickly becoming a hub of entertainment, shopping and dining - we knew it was perfect for us,” says Jane. Travelling the world for pieces for the boutique is one of Jane’s favourite aspects of the job. “I’ve had the travel bug from a young age and being able to travel AND shop for a living is pretty fantastic,” says Jane. Jane enjoys choosing items that are stylish, affordable and suited to Queensland’s tropical climate.. “We’re based in Brisbane so we have a strong focus on natural, breathable fabrics and cool styles. We’re a bit boho, a little bit global and always have a feminine twist,” says Jane. Jolie | 1/130 Ryans Road, Nundah | 0401 311 216 | www.jolie.com.au

LOCAL HISTORY

Nundah Activity Centre Celebrates 40 Years The Nundah Activity Centre is celebrating 40 years in 2016. The Nundah Activity Centre, previously called the Golden Years Centre, was opened in 1976 by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Colin Hannah. Janetta Mcdiarmid, Operations Manager at the Nundah Activity Centre, said that the centre had grown over the last 40 years and now has 400 members, 200 volunteers and 375 clients. “We have members ranging in age from 4 to 102 years who participate in our weekly activities,” says Janetta. “Our most popular activities include table tennis, card games, dancing and the Men’s Shed.” The 200 volunteers at the centre assist with a range of services for local residents, including Meals on Wheels and the Community Visitor Scheme, where volunteers spend time with local residents in person or via Skype around Australia. The Meals on Wheels program has been running since the centre opened in 1976 and has grown to now provide 20,000 meals a year. Next year, the Centre aims to provide 25,000 meals. “The increased popularity of the Meals on Wheels program means we are looking for more volunteers to assist with delivering and preparing meals,” says Janetta. Other services at the Nundah Activity Centre include gentle exercise, recreational bus trips, dancing, patchwork, craft and yoga. Members and guests can also take part in day respite, podiatry services, physiotherapy and counseling. What’s Happening at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre

Nundah Neighbourhood Centre’s Upcoming Art Show

Sewing Group Material Donations The sewing group continues to grow in popularity, with participants making very good use of the already donated materials to make clothes, pillow cases, doona covers and many other wonderful items for themselves and their families. If you have any old material, cotton, scissors, and buttons or zips at home that you no longer need and are happy to donate, we would greatly appreciate this. Just drop any donations down to the Centre between 9.30 and 2.30 Monday to Friday.

Due to the success of last year’s event, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre is once again hosting a Community Art Show in Nundah. This event will raise funds to run workshops, including art therapy for women who have experienced domestic violence. Last year, over 300 people attended the show and this year the Centre hopes to see more. The show will not only raise funds to implement art therapy workshops, but will also provide an opportunity for both established and emerging artists to display and sell their pieces. The opening night and awards ceremony will take place on Friday May 27, from 6.00pm to 9.00pm. The categories for entry include: • Sculpture • Photography • Works On Paper • Mixed Media • Painting • Local Novice If you are interested in submitting an art piece(s) fill in an application by visiting the centre, or visit www.ncsgi.com.au or www.facebook.com/Nundah-NeighbourhoodCentre-658994620794556. All entry forms must be submitted by 5pm May 16.

The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre is also looking for in-kind support, sponsorship and donations for the show. This could be the perfect opportunity to showcase your brand as well as your contribution in raising money for a very worthy cause. For more information about how you can contribute, call 3260 6820 or email events@nundahcc.org.au. All support and donations are greatly appreciated and will be fully acknowledged.

The Nundah Lions Club hosted the Youth of the Year Club Final at the Nundah Activity Centre in February. Six students from Earnshaw State College and St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School contested the event. The students were judged in a one on one interview and on their public speaking ability. The Public Speaking Award went to Michael Greathead from Earnshaw State College and the overall final winner was Ella Beutner from St Margaret’s Anglican School. Ella will now go on to the Zone Final in Geebung. Congratulations to all students involved.

This centre is closed every second Tuesday of the month from 12.30pm for a staff meeting. FUNDING ACKNOWLEDGMENT: The Nundah Community Support Group Inc [NCSGI] which administers the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and the Nundah Community Legal Service acknowledges its funding from Queensland’s Attorney-General’s Department and the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services; project grants from Gambling Community Benefit Fund, Brisbane City Council and others, plus donations from clients and the community. Wednesday Evening Drop In Legal Service The Nundah Community Legal Service offers a walk-in legal service on Wednesday evenings from 5.30pm. Given the significant increase in demand we advise: 1. Doors open at 5.30pm to allow clients time to complete the Intake Forms and allow staff to allocate appointments to appropriate solicitors. 2. Solicitors will commence seeing clients at 6.15pm. 3. Clients will normally be seen in order of arrival subject to the availability of a lawyer with the appropriate knowledge and experience to properly advise clients.

4. The Centre will seek to accommodate those who have been advised they cannot be seen by the Caxton, Pine Rivers or Moreton CLCs. 5. Clients arriving after 6.45pm will not be likely to be seen given the limited resources. 6. It may be that clients cannot be seen at all given a lack of resources or expertise. In such cases, they will be advised of this as soon as possible and given relevant referrals and/or offered a daytime appointment, though there is often a substantial delay for an available time for the latter.

Please note – the Centre does not provide advice over the phone or by email.

Imagine... Meals on Wheels without Volunteers

Before legal advice can be provided it is a requirement to: • Provide photographic identification • Complete a Client Intake Form complete with “Other Party’s” details and a brief description of your matter • Provide any relevant paperwork which could assist staff with your matter

Every day residents in our community rely on Meals on Wheels and we can only serve them with the help of our volunteers Right now Nundah Meals on Wheels needs kitchen hands and delivery drivers to help us serve those who depend on us for their daily nutrition. Make new friends and help bring joy into the lives of others by becoming a Meals on Wheels Volunteer. For a small amount of time, once a week, once a fortnight, once a month, you can make a big difference.
