Circa One - Changing the Game Property Solution’s Circa Nundah Village is proving a real game-changer for one of Brisbane’s oldest residential suburbs. Since its launch in 2009, the exciting $270 million, urban village upgrade has altered perceptions and driven new demand for city-style living in a village atmosphere, close to every conceivable amenity. Property Solutions has put to work its experience in developing The Barracks, James Street New Farm and SW1 at South Bank, to transform and complement the heart of Nundah Village. Already completed is the Woolworths shopping centre, the commercial tower with major tenants Energex and the 3000-member Go Health Club. Now the foundation has been built for Brisbane’s

hippest new boulevard, the Aspinall Street precinct. The Circa One residential tower has welcomed its first owners and tenants, with three new fullyfurnished display apartments now open as part of the developer’s final push to sell the remaining few apartments. Equally strong sales in the second 102 apartment tower DOS, has triggered the start of construction by leading Queensland builder Hutchinson Builders, with less than a third of apartments still on the market. A successful sales campaign will enable the launch of a further 120 apartments in a third tower. The Aspinall Street precinct will change minds on Nundah forever. 25 retail tenancies, from restaurants, coffee shops, deli/bakeries, Spa, fashion,

banking and more will create the “new James Street”, with handpicked tenants now vying for space and already eight signed up. Circa Nundah Village has also inspired the expansion of neighbouring Royal English Hotel, which has commenced extension work on Station Street to integrate itself into the project. This is a project that all Nundah locals can be proud of, with the likely legacy of bringing even more enthusiastic businesses and residents to the area. Find out more information about Circa Nundah Village at www.circanundah.com.au. Visit the display centre - Aspinall Street, Nundah.

Extraordinary Local Ballet Talent

WORDS BY NICOLA CURRY

This past year has been an exciting year for one of our local ballerinas, Bianca Scudamore. Only thirteen years old, Bianca has graced the stages of numerous theaters winning local and international ballet competitions. Hand picked by Queensland Ballet’s former director, Francois Klaus, she performed the title roles of Alice and Aurora in Queenland Ballet’s productions of “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Sleeping Beauty” respectively. Bianca’s parents recognized her love for dancing at a young age. “She always loved dancing around the house to all different types of music,” her mother explains. Inspired by Russian superstar, Svetlana Zakharova of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, Bianca enrolled in local classes, later progressing to Queensland Ballet’s Junior Extension Program. This year, she began high school and started a new ballet school. Her school schedule is tailored to her ballet schedule allowing her to train at an advanced level. In April, she attended an intensive ballet program in Melbourne and was asked to join The Australian Ballet School’s full-time program beginning in 2014. In addition, Bianca was accepted into the prestigious three week summer program at the Royal Ballet School in London. The remainder of this year promises exciting challenges as well. Bianca will be performing the role of Silky in The Brisbane City Youth Ballet’s premier of “The Magic Faraway Tree” at The Conservatorium Theater in Southbank from September 27-29. In addition, she will be performing a child in Queensland Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” in December. The Magic Faraway Tree Sept 27-29 - Tickets via Qtix or visit www.bcyb.com.au.

The ‘Ton-Up Boy’ counterculture erupted in Britain in the 1950s, and embodied all things rock & roll and café-racer, making it the perfect name choice for the café. Is there a Quick Fix for Fitness? In a microwave society that’s dominated by convenience and quick fixes, the obesity epidemic is quickly becoming the leading cause and contributing factor of death amongst Australians. Within our fast paced world, it is easy to create excuses and find distractions, plunging us into a vicious cycle of poor eating and a sedentary lifestyle. The harsh truth is there are no magic pills or quick fixes to having a long and healthy life. Unlike many gyms in the market, Outfit 24 is designed to fit your lifestyle, fit your needs and most importantly fit your budget, having low fees and no contracts. There is no better time to start than now….Outfit 24 is offering a “3 for 1” membership until September 30th. Lotus has an Extreme Makeover Lotus Wellbeing and Beauty has had an extreme makeover. After residing in their present location in the Nundah Central building for the past nine years, we speak with the owner, Angela, about the salon’s complete renovations and what these improvements mean to the life of her salon. What renovations have been made to the salon? We’ve completely redesigned the Lotus experience ‑ new floors and cabinetry have been installed, and we have replaced some of the walls with heavy block out curtains, enabling us to open them to create more space. A separate spray tan room has been added along with new manicure and pedicure workstations. How will this help provide the products and services at Lotus? We have improved the space to accommodate both new and existing treatments. The change will enable me to employ more staff and potentially open for longer hours in the future. What should clients expect after the renovations? We are maintaining most of our existing treatments and will be introducing new

treatments in the future. A new loyalty program will be offered providing clients with extra rewards. Promotions and client nights will be introduced to help educate and show clients the benefits of looking after their skin properly. What drew you to this industry? I originally wanted to be a massage therapist. After completing my certificate 4 in remedial massage and reflexology, I decided to combine beauty therapy with it. I have been a beauty therapist for 14 years and recently completed a Graduate Vocational Certificate in Dermal Therapies. I now have a Safety Officers Certificate that allows me to operate Laser and IPL machines in addition to allowing me to perform Chemical peels and Dermal Rolling treatments, completing our suite of skin treatments. A History of Bright Smiles for Nundah Nundah Village Dental has seen a lot of change since it opened its doors in 1981 (pictured inset) , not the least being their fresh new premises in Circa Nundah, shop 6/1231 Sandgate Rd. Nundah is in Transition Nundah is in transition. How about you? How do you react to transitions? Nothing changes. Nothing for ages. Though we might expect it, wait for it or drive it. Then something new appears. I often meet people around a transition point for them. Things were flying – going great, feeling good. Then something shifts and then you shift. You change. And somehow the pieces don’t fit. Perhaps it is a new opportunity or connection, a loss, or reaching a milestone whatever that means for you. Have you experienced it? You do that thing finally that is going to make everything just perfect. You get energy again in one area in your life, only to discover this light makes you wrestle with and question other areas of your life. A period of rediscovering or re-engineering those goals, values, activities, relationships that make up you. Transition. Often with great energy, gusto, and sometimes fear. Changes can be great, changes can be daunting. What can be strengthening is to remind yourself of things you have been through successfully, challenges met, and most of all to return to the last known sighting of ‘you’. That thing you do, that place, those connections you lost touch with that used to give you a sense of vitality, capability and joy to re-energise you through the transitions you experience and the changes you make as you move forward.

Local Artist - Graham Borough What inspires you? I have been painting now for over thirty years. The inspiration is, as always, the easy part. It’s everywhere. Putting that spark into an artwork is a way different thing. It takes years and probably more than one lifetime to get right. [me anyway] Mind you, a trip to the Samoan Islands or such really does add a whole new level of ideas. What are your greatest achievements as an artist? Staying at it. There have been some lapses, however I keep coming back to it. How would you describe your artwork? Color and Line. The mediums may change and the styles be they abstract or landscape require different techniques but the balance is always there. My biggest challenge is always trying to keep the quiet spot in an artwork. Take us through an average day for you. Paint in the afternoon. the rest is whatever has to be done and then. swim laps, take a nap and read The Australian. Really, what else can I do for a living? I’m pretty much the only person that would employ me. What are the biggest challenges of being an artist? Staying with it and trying to get each picture right. What are the biggest misconceptions about artists? That their opinions on things are more relevant compared to everyone elses. you have a favourite piece of artwork? What’s Happening at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre

Neighbourhood Centre’s Legal Service to Continue The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and Community Legal service welcomed a visit by Queensland’s Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie accompanied by his policy officer Maggie Forrest and Jan Hollingsworth, Electorate Officer to, and representing local MP for Clayfield, Tim Nicholls. We were very pleased to receive confirmation from Mr Bleijie that the state Government was providing grant of $30,000 to enable us to maintain our Friday Clinic Legal Service for one year from July 2013, which would otherwise have closed on 30 June 2013. Brisbane northside residents, based in Nundah, especially those disadvantaged and marginalised, will benefit from our capacity to maintain this vital service for another year.

Nundah Festival Nundah Fest is quickly approaching! The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre is in search of local not-for-profit organisations and community groups who would like a place to strut their stuff during the festival. The centre will hold a ‘family chill-out zone” in the back playground area which will draw a crowd through the proposed community stall area. We are in search of about 19 groups/organisations who would like to hold a not-forprofit stall or info table. Nundah Fest will be held on SUNDAY 8TH OF SEPTEMBER. Please contact the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre on 3260 6820 or email projects@nundahcc.org.au with some information on what you’d like to contribute to our community stalls space.

Sexual Violence Prevention Month.

Welcome to our Students on Placement

Thanks for vital and valued contributions

October is Sexual Violence Prevention Month. This year during October the Northside Sexual Assault Action Network (NSAAN) will be holding a 4 week group program for women who have experienced sexual violence. It will be held at the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre commencing 8th October. For further information or to register your interest in attending this program please contact the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre on 3260 6820 and ask to speak to Lisa.

For the next 6 months, the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre will be hosting 2 students, Sam and Paloma, who are here on placement as a part of their University studies. Student placement is a great opportunity for students to enhance their learning experience and get a good understanding of what it’s like to work in the Community Sector. Both students will be very busy learning all about the day to day running of a Neighbourhood Centre and working on projects that will benefit clients of the Centre and the local community.

Thank-you to Sharon and her colleagues at Energex for their generous financial donation to the Centre. Sharon holds a weekly lunchtime yoga class with her colleagues, and instead of paying for her time the group decided to collect contributions and donate them to a charity. Also a big thank you to Grill’d at Ascot who raised $100 for the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre as a part of their Local Matters fundraising program. This donation will go towards purchasing ingredients for our Friday Community Lunch.

Teaching Nundah How To Share NeeBoz is an online sharing community that brings the neighbourhoods of Brisbane together to swap and trade skills and belongings. Our recent fashion swap party at the Prince of Wales Hotel on the 18th of July was a success with a bunch of local ladies joining us, making new friends and swapping for some new treasures (some items still had the tags on)! NeeBoz offers Brisbane residents a unique, creative and simple solution to the ever-increasing problem of being time poor, by connecting neighbours to help each other and share resources. Jodie Hampson, founder of NeeBoz, says “NeeBoz is going to be an invaluable tool for residents of Brisbane. “It will not only help by providing more re-

sources and skills from their neighbours, but it will also connect them with their fellow residents and provide opportunity for relationships, something they may never do without NeeBoz. “For struggling families, and I know it’s getting tougher from personal experience, NeeBoz really will be an invaluable resource.” Sharing economy communities have already taken off around the globe, and now it is time for Brisbane to share in the resource revolution and connect with their neighbours. The next Fashion Swap Party will be held on Thursday, August 15th, 6:30pm – 9:30pm, Toombul Shire Hall, 1141 Sandgate Rd, Nundah. To find out more go to www.facebook.com/ neeboz or email support@neeboz.com.au.

Happy 175th Birthday In 1838, eleven German missionaries and five wives were granted land by the colonial government to establish a mission to the indigenous inhabitants as the first free white settlers in Queensland. This settlement has evolved into the Nundah we know and love today. Records describe the first homes as being all built in a line on blocks of 6 and 7 acres in depth. Each home was of the same pattern and size containing four good rooms and a kitchen.

How times have changed. I’d imagine those early pioneers would not expect Nundah to have million dollar homes or eight storey buildings and over 10,500 residents enjoying the amenities and easy lifestyle we have today. This years Nundah Village Street Festival will again celebrate the Nundah lifestyle. I look forward to seeing you there.
