We're with you...

...For Life's Journeys From supply chain innovation to shifting culture and work force, this issue celebrates the innovators and their relentless commitment to change with the times. Welcome to our inaugural issue of Journeys. Thank You for joining us in recognizing true grit, innovation and adaptation from some of our area's most impactful small business leaders, who many of us are proud to call partners, and friends. Business owners can design a strategy and agree how to implement. But when there's no game plan, no precedent, an influx of variables all at once that are beyond anyone's control, that's when resilience and moxie shine through the best.

As you read these true stories you'll begin to see the patterns worth emulating. It's our ambition to not only shine a light on the actions and beliefs helping some owners truly thrive, but also share insights about how we can all raise our game if we work together. It's always been a part of who we are at Seneca Savings. Do you have a good story to tell? We want to hear it and celebrate with you. Because wherever you're at on your unique path, we're with you...

WHAT'S IN A NAME? When you're born with the name Maximilian Leo, you know you're destined to do great things. So it's no surprise that Lion Construction has ascended to become one of the leading demolition and environmental contractors in the northeast.

ENGAGING ‍"If I picked one word to describe Seneca Savings it’s engaging. They engage the customer, they engage with our business. They engage with me one-on-one, and they do a great job of really looking at our company as a whole," says Max.

THE LION DIFFERENCE ‍This company's reputation for integrity and responsibility has been built with each completed project. "I pride myself on the company’s record of safety while maintaining efficiency to meet every deadline and protect our clients' interest," says Leo.

FREEDOM TO FOCUS ON BUSINESS “Max felt that at his prior bank, he was handcuffed because of the requirements,” says Angelo Testani, SR VP of Commercial Lending. "You have to look at the business as a whole. It’s more than just numbers with us.” Max finishes by adding that “Seneca really has gone above and beyond. It’s allowed me to focus on my business and not on the banking.”

Providing full service in-house demolition means Lion plans start-to-finish logistics for trucking, equipment and waste disposal. This allows them to be more efficient and react quickly to changing situations. It minimizes cost to clients, maintaining total control over the entire process, from the design through close-out.

COURAGE IN THE WORK From asbestos abatement to full demolition, Lions' continous commitment to build mutual trust and deliver impeccable work is clear... and a testament to Max's vision, and conviction.

Clifton Recycling has nearly doubled their business over the last six years. "It's a testament to what can happen when companies work together," says owner Randy Reynolds.

Mulch Moving ofacross CNY Mountains

Randy Reynolds with Clifton recycling has been moving mountains for over 30 years. Clifton Recycling, Incorporated (CRI) is a locally owned and operated business that started in 1991, focused on snow removal. Their specialty today? Manufacturing wood mulch. This has developed and expanded into several other profitable areas of business. CRI now provides landscaping materials, tub grinding green waste and various types of material trucking and equipment hauling. They service a broad range of customers from homeowners to large municipalities. When you're growing a small business, you need to surround yourself with strong partners. "We started out with one truck and have grown

to a fleet of over thirteen trucks plus over twenty pieces of large equipment. We've gone to several banks over the years," says Randy. "When we sat down with Seneca, it felt very comfortable and family-oriented. They were always willing to talk with us, give us their outlook and push us in the right direction." "Randy and I met almost twenty years ago," says Angelo Testani, SR VP of Commercial Lending at Seneca Savings. "Over the years, he's needed to expand, acquire more equipment. So we came up with a plan to help him. Randy has stuck to that plan and knows we're with him every step of the way." Every small business owner understands when you're in business long enough, there are bound to be potholes. "Seneca has always been there for our growth over the years. They've been here this last year when things were tough, they've always been supportive," says Randy. When you're moving mountains, mulch or any other... you don't have to do it alone.

"You have to commit to delivering five star service to every customer, every time" - Dan Napolitano, Founding Partner

"Hailing from downstate NY, I've always worked with big banks. So I was kind of skeptical of a small bank. I was blown away by the Seneca Savings organization. We started working with Seneca when they became a client of ours. They're the first organization we met that treats clients the way we treat clients. And that's a pretty rare thing to feel like you're being taken care of the way you take care of others. It's been years now that we’ve been growing together, and I've never gone anywhere else." Dan Napolitano founded The Garam Group almost twenty years ago. An information technology managed services firm, Dan and his expanding team provide IT support for small to medium businesses, usually in the 30 to 200 employee range.

To thrive in today’s business world it doesn’t matter the size of your company. You really need to focus on a five star customer and employee experience where everyone prospers.

"With our organization we fill a niche providing high corporate level, enterprise level IT for smaller organizations that really don't have an IT department. We’ve enjoyed a lot of success working with a lot of business owners across the Syracuse and Upstate NY area," says Dan. There's little doubt, the world is increasingly in need of connection, communication resourcefulness, and online security. JOURNEYS | 6

FEATURE STORY Sharkey's of Liverpool Owner Jim Nichols shares why it's vital to keep learning, keep growing, and keep fostering relationships and experiences that stand the test of time.

JOURNEYS | 7

SHARKEYSBARANDGRILL.COM

Jim Nichols, along with his wife Kristin, own Sharkey's in Liverpool. Eleven years ago, Jim had the dream of opening a bar and restaurant with volleyball courts. "I knew nothing about the restaurant business. Even now, eleven years later, we're still trying to learn things about it!" says Jim.

into. I think it's important to have a group of good, regular customers that come in that I consider my friends, they consider me their friend. It’s kind of like the family picnic that happens every day here at Sharkey's. I’m very proud of what we've done here to create that for people.

Beach Life

On Stage

I built my business based on my experiences of going to the beach in Southern California. No matter what profession you were in, at the end of the day you’d stop at the beach to see if all your friends were there.

Sharkey's has twelve sand volleyball courts with leagues every day of the week in the summer. Their massive stage with pavilion hosts popular concerts. "We’ve had bands like 38 Special, Buckcherry, national acts that we’ve brought to Onondaga County, which we're very proud of. We’re still growing and still going strong.

Sometimes we'd play volleyball. Sometimes people would play cards, but you always went down there to see who you would run

"I built my business based on my experiences of going to the beach in Southern California... It's kind of like the family picnic that happens every day at Sharkey's." What makes our place special, at least to me, is knowing the people and the friends we’ve made that come and enjoy our place and we enjoy our time with them."

Inspiration Kristen, my wife inspires me. She loves working here with me, JOURNEYS | 8

most of the time anyway! She’s very much a part of what has made Sharkey’s what it is today and how it will continue to grow.

Balance By nature, I'm a very positive person. I always want to be upgrading and doing new stuff. And it's good to have someone that keeps you grounded. Kristen helps keep me in check, but then supports me when there's something that I really want to do. We make a great team.

Pick Your Passion The best thing about being an entrepreneur is that you are your own boss. It’s hard sometimes because you're responsible for everything, but the best part is when my kids were young, if I wanted to go their football game or their volleyball game or their basketball game, I could make that decision to go do that. Being able to call your own schedule, and the work that you put in and what you build is yours at the end of the day. The most important advice I can offer to anyone whether first starting out or looking to even reinvent themselves and their business… is pick something you're passionate about. Something you can really enjoy doing. Don’t pick something because you think it’s going to make you a lot of money if it's not something that you're excited about. Next is to make sure you have a proper funding to do what you want to do. As a young kid, I thought I knew everything. As you get older, you learn to ask people that have done ventures before. Ask them what they’ve learned. If they’d do anything differently. At the end of the day, a lot of your success will be about the relationships that you have with people in your industry and in the area.

The Pandemic The last two years have been filled with guidelines, restrictions, which were all necessary during the pandemic. Hopefully we'll be moving past all of that. It hasn’t been easy for anyone. Staffing is always an issue for us, as it is for so many; finding good staff to deliver great service to our patrons. It's an ongoing issue. We work to hold high standards in our business. Now, with costs going up, it's hard to pass those costs on to customers because we're continuing to try and keep our prices low.

Make a Difference

Cultivating our customer service as well as a friendly, family environment here at the restaurant is always part of our future. When you have a bar and grill, people think that's not good for families. I'm very proud that on Friday nights we have about two hundred high school kids that come here to play volleyball. The parents hang out, have a salad and a beer or a glass of wine and watch their kids play. The young kids that have grown up playing on our courts are now going to college and having a good experience as a teammate in their college environment. I'm proud that we're able to be a part in helping create that.

Always There

As a community bank, unlike some of the bigger banks, Joe and his staff get to meet the person behind the business. They want to make sure that that endeavor is going to make sense. And it's something that's needed in our area. The bigger banks just look at the numbers. Numbers sometimes are not as important as the person behind the numbers.

Changing the game I’d like to think we'll continue to raise the bar and change the game of entertainment and

Opening up a new business isn’t always easy at the beginning, and when things weren't going well at first, Joe Vitale was there to support us and make sure he did everything he could to help us. Because of my relationship with Joe, we took all of our business to Seneca Savings. Remember when I said a lot of your success will depend on relationships? Even as the president of the bank, if I called Joe right now on his cell phone, he’d answer the phone and answer any questions I have. Every time. I trust him. I consider him my friend. Too much now in the banking industry is online. You need the online stuff, but it's nice to be able to talk to a person and know they're going to be there for you.

"Cultivating our customer service as well as a family-friendly environment is always part of our game plan." hospitality in Central NY. And I’d say the team that Joe Vitale leads at Seneca is doing the very same thing for small business banking. For anyone who wants to be an entrepreneur, or maybe even looking to refinance their existing business… look at Seneca Savings. Because I know they want to meet you. They'll take a look at you and your business and be there to support you throughout the years. Like they've done for me. JOURNEYS | 10

SR VP COMMERCIAL LENDING

There are some common speed bumps that can slow down a loan process. Here's how to keep the loan process rolling more smoothly...

1

A complete personal financial statement

It doesn’t need to include every penny of every asset the business owner has, but including major assets is a must. Leaving sections blank makes us go back and forth to get the needed information. Some business owners feel as if they don't have to share these details. But it truly provides the lender with a more detailed picture of the borrower.

How can we help?

ATestani@SenecaSavings.com

2

Being Prepared Ahead of Time, Saves Time

Another speedbump that can delay your loan approval is not providing information when requested. Lenders will always request at least three years of personal and business tax returns. So, if you can have them ready, you'd be amazed how much time that saves in your process.

Complete Tax Returns

When we strive to partner with you on our commercial loan, we will want to see all the schedules and attachments with each return. Providing only the first few pages will slow the process down. JOURNEYS | 11

JOURNEY TO A NEW HOME with Jeff Roney I'm Jeff Roney with Keller Williams Realty Syracuse, and I'm a licensed associate broker in real estate. I've been in the business for 35 years. I help buyers and sellers of residential property achieve all their real estate dreams by helping people with marketing, negotiating, pricing and identifying the right house. Right after I graduated from college at SUNY Oswego, I moved to New York City. My first job actually was in formal wear sales. Then I got recruited by the owner of a real estate company who was a customer of the formal wear store.

So I went and I got licensed. The next thing I knew I was in real estate, in Manhattan, on the upper east side with an office on 86th street and Lexington Avenue. That's where I cut my teeth in real estate spending my first six years in sales, leasing, and in a sales management role. Shortly after I got married in the early 90’s, my wife and I moved to Syracuse. I'm a native of Syracuse. Eventually in 2006, I made my way over to Keller Williams where I am now. So, it's been a long journey. I guess you'd call me a real estate lifer. I love it! JOURNEYS | 12

What I Love Most The thing I love the most about being an independent contractor, being in business for myself, is that I get to make decisions, and I get to steer the ship in order to tailor my business the way that I want to. I can do what I think is necessary to really help my clients and my customers. I really like being in charge and being able to chart my own destiny and design what my career and my life is going to look like.

Shifting with the Times There are always variables that come up that make you have to shift or change course. Like a lot of businesses, real estate was heavily affected by the pandemic. When it began, we spent probably five or six weeks as an industry, as a state association, as a local association of Realtors, trying to figure out how we were going to conduct business. We were getting some direction from New York State. In the beginning they said we were an essential business. Then they said that we weren't an essential business. And then they said we were an essential business with restrictions. So it took awhile for the state, and for us locally, to figure it all out.

Adapting We started doing a lot of business virtually. People were literally making offers based on video and video conferencing, rather than physically going to see a property. We weren't attending home inspections like we normally would. There were limits on the number of people that could be in a property. At one time, there were restrictions on who could attend the closing and the

attorneys were really challenged also on how to conduct closings successfully. So, we started relying more on technology and figuring out how to utilize the best solutions available.

Emotions Can Run High Real estate can be very emotional for people, it's stressful. It creates anxiety and it's not because it's a horrible thing to buy or sell a home. Often, it's the biggest investment anyone will make. You're uprooting your family. There are memories involved, there's change. And as we all know, change creates anxiety.

Getting to the Finish Line For me it's about providing some levity in the process, helping people realize we're going to get to the finish line. Getting to help guide them into their next home is incredibly rewarding! JOURNEYS | 13

Partnering with Seneca Savings I was introduced to Seneca savings through my local business networking international chapter, BNI. I knew the Seneca name, but I really didn't know anything about the business. Laurie Ucher introduced me to a service they offer called Z rent. It’s a way that landlords and real estate investors can more easily have tenants pay rent. It's a way that helps us to keep track of a stream of payments. It lets us set up leasing terms within the program and it makes life easier and it saves time. And that's really what everybody wants. At least I know that's what I want. I like to save time and do things more efficiently. Seneca has helped me to do that. Their statements are easy to read and if there's ever an issue or question that comes up, they make it very easy because you get personalized service. You don't get stuck in some kind of technology or voicemail loop where it's very difficult to talk to someone.

At Seneca they treat you like a friend. That's what I think is great about them. It’s that hometown feel that really comes through in the way they do business.

HOME SWEET HOME SWEET HOME INSPECTION'S ROSS RELYEA "...BEST MOVE I EVER MADE"

Ross Relyea grew up in Chittenango and Cazenovia, NY and received his business management degree from the Syracuse University School of Management and his MBA from Southern Connecticut State University. His fondness for troubleshooting and process improvement led to a career in Supply Chain and Operations Management for the local Welch Allyn and Hanford Pharmaceuticals and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Groton, CT. In 1998 his entrepreneurial spirit paved the way to opening the Relyea Brewing Company. Together Ross and his brewer brother Todd Relyea produced the Towpath line of craft beers, including Low Bridge Scottish Ale and the famous Hoppin’ Mad IPA. Ross’s passion for homes, particularly old and historic ones, comes in part from helping his father perform major remodeling jobs on their residences.

JOURNEYS | 15

Having owned and renovated several homes himself, Ross gained extensive experience with plumbing, wiring, repairs and remodeling. Today, combining his interest in building, troubleshooting and home improvement, he’s gotten out from behind a desk to pursue his passions. Sweet Homes Chittenango, LLC helps potential homeowners ensure that their new home is a “sweet” home. Always striving to the best in his field, Ross has completed extensive training to ensure that his “top to bottom home inspections” are comprehensive. Sweet Homes Chittenango, LLC is well-suited for servicing both the greater Syracuse and Utica areas, although Ross can inspect homes anywhere in NYS. Named to honor the history of his family and his Scottish maternal great-grandparents, Ross chose the name to reflect his goal to help ensure that all his client’s homes are “sweet homes.”

Realize you can't do it alone. Find a mentor, find resources, talk to a banker, someone you can trust. There are so many resources out there. Understanding that you can't do it alone and taking time to truly educate yourself is important. We typically tend not to talk about our stresses when it comes to money. So once you've made the decision that you want to put a plan of action in place, then all things are possible. Understand what money is. Money isn't the end all, be all. But it truly can be a powerful mechanism to help you accomplish certain goals. Learning how to leverage that power and leverage your time more effectively, can take you one step further towards those goals. Where does my income come from? How often do I receive it? Am I making purchases or spending money on things that don't align with my goals? Examine all the channels through which your money flows - both in and out. What am I saving for? What are your goals? Write them down, create a vision board, print off the pictures and put them up. It sounds simplistic, but every time you print off a picture or look at that vacation that you want to go on, it helps cement the reality that you're going to make your dream come true. Typically we tend to have short-term and long-term savings goals. So understand what it is you're saving for, and why. Your call to action. What adjustments do I need to make every single day to accomplish my dreams? Whether it's making an automatic payment to your savings account, whatever it is you need to do, you can start slow. You can start small, but start today. You'll immediately feel like you're in the driver's set and on your path to your financial freedom.

Surcharging vs. Cash Discount Cash Discounting is a program that marks up the inventory by the percentage of the surcharge. This is then discounted should the customer choose to pay cash instead of card. This is a way to incentivize the customer to pay cash. You typically see this at gas stations where they have two stated prices. More and more retail and restaurant businesses are taking advantage of this program as well. With NYS legalizing, surcharging has become the standard in card processing in the state. More and more business owners are posting signage regarding an increase in price to the consumer should they choose to pay with a credit card. There are right and wrong ways to do so.

The Business Owner's Journey In today's business world, it's more important than ever to know your options and understand where you can be more competitive, while still offering your customers a wonderful buying experience. "Wherever you're at in your processes," says Randy, "We're here to walk that journey with you."

Truly Passing on the Fee Some programs are a true passing of the fee to the consumer on credit card payments. The merchants net the original purchase price of the good or service while not paying on the credit card transaction at all. "This is huge as I see clients still on traditional billing who are collecting an extra 3-4% from the consumer," says Merchant Services Advisor Randy Dudley."Essentially, they're paying their original processing fees on more money. That's an unnecessary cost to the business owner."

Writing a New Chapter, Together

CONNECTION "When I met with Scott Farnett, President of the Board for Syracuse Habitat For Humanity (SHFH) I knew right away this was going to be a unique opportunity to support the growth of our community," says Seneca Savings Commercial Loan Officer, Angela Stivers. "I was familiar with SHFH, a well known non-profit serving those in need in the Syracuse and the surrounding area. I was excited! It’s not every day you get the opportunity to help a local non-profit who touches so many lives. "

"We're excited to begin a whole new chapter." - Scott Farnett, Syracuse Habitat For Humanity

SHFH had been searching for a new location that would meet their growing needs. They had gone through some unusual circumstances and were in need of a bank who could move quickly for them. We were able to move swiftly and get the loan closed prior to their deadline.

Common Bond

COLLABORATION

Throughout the process we deepened our relationship and found a common bond between us. Seneca Savings is passionate about the growth of our community and the small businesses that support that growth. SHFH shares that same passion. There really is truth in “Support Local, Bank Local.” Seneca Savings and SHFH are eager to grow in a partnership together. "We look forward to Seneca Savings employees being a part of the hands-on, good work that SHFH does as well," says Bank President and CEO, Joseph Vitale. We'll continue to share the unfolding story for SHFH as they forge ahead into 2022 with the right banking partnership to walk this journey with them.
