Are You Not The Christ?

The Solemnity of Christ the King kicks off the final week of Ordinary Time; and perhaps this scene in the Gospel might remind you more of Holy Week than the celebration of Jesus Christ as King. But that's just it! Christ is no ordinary King. It is usually the king's loyal subjects who are dying on the battlefield to save the life of the

king. Here, the King is dying for the life of His subjects, who just happen to be sinners and therefore not all that loyal.

Could Christ have come down from the Cross? Absolutely! Then why didn't He? It was not the nails that held Him to the Cross. Rather, it was His love for humanity collectively and His love for each and every one of us individually. He sacrificed Himself to defeat an enemy that we, left to ourselves, would never be able to overcome death.

A wonderful sense of hope is given to us in this Gospel because Jesus promises Paradise to the repentant criminal. Something else in this scene could also leave one with a sense of hope, which perhaps isn't as strong as the former but nevertheless does shed at the very least a dimmer ray of hope. The repentant criminal reminds the reviling criminal – and really all of us - of the condemnation we could be subject to. What does the reviling criminal see when he looks at Jesus after hearing that promise of Paradise given to the repentant criminal? Does He see that Divine Love which cannot be explained by mere words? Does He see hope for himself even after he tempted God? What we do know is that Jesus does not condemn him in this Gospel scene.

Original sin dealt us a nasty blow. We want the bad guy to get what he deserves. But the kind of love that we operate with has boundaries on all sides; and we're quite good at deciding for ourselves who should reside within those boundaries. But making God number One in our lives and trying to grow closer to Him by means of persistent efforts at climbing the often rugged terrain of the spiritual mountain could indeed begin to punch holes into those boundary walls.

It's quite natural from a human perspective to assume that the criminal pretty much made his reservations for hell by reviling Jesus. On the other hand, what he witnessed in the exchange between Jesus and the repentant criminal may have triggered the beginning of his own conversion. And since Jesus doesn't even so much as lecture this man in this scene, could it be because our Omniscient God could see changes for the better awaiting this man – even if it would come at his last breath and final heartbeat?

First Reading – 2 Samuel 5:1-3 King David did not earn the respect of his people by issuing threats of punishment or by promising the best of circumstances. Like any truly great leader, David won the hearts and minds of his people by setting a consistent example of sacrificial service and love.

Second Reading - Colossians 1:12-20 Jesus Christ is the unique and the final revelation of both God and humankind. Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creatures. We might expect such a person to be the epitome of strength and power. But the heart of our Lord is revealed to be nothing other than sacrificial, suffering love.

Gospel - Luke 23:9, 10 The taunts hurled at the crucified Christ centered in one question: “How can he save the world if he cannot save himself?” But these questions reflect the world’s understanding of power. In God’s economy of values, there is no greater power than that of sacrificing ourselves for others.

ADVENT PARISH MISSION On the 2nd week of Advent, there will be a Parish Mission here at Sts. Peter & Paul Church. The theme will be “God’s Love Awaken in Faith” and will be presented

by Fr. Raphael Bonanna, a Franciscan Friar from the Order of Friars Minor. Fr. Bonanna is from Boston. Please mark December 5, 6, & 7 from 6 – 7:30 pm on your calendar and join us for the Advent Mission in preparation for the coming of the Messiah and the celebration of Christmas. Fellowship to follow in the courtyard. (Penance service will be on December 7.)

Thanksgiving Mass & Blessing of Table Bread Thursday, November 24th at 8:00am

Thanksgiving Mass will be celebrated this Thursday at 8:00am. We look forward to welcoming visiting family and friends for the holiday as we gather in prayer along with our Sts. Peter & Paul’s parish family as we give thanks to God for His abundant blessings. We invite you to bring to Mass the bread that you will share with family and friends. Please remember to add your family’s name on the bread container as you place it on the table by the altar. At the end of Mass, we will bless the breads as a prayer of blessing for our families.

CATHOLIC CARE PROJECT Thanksgiving Food Collection We thank you for your continued support and generosity to the Catholic Care Project.

For the months of September and October, your food contributions totaled over 1,700 pounds of non-perishable items. We were able to distribute 130 bags of groceries to our Kupuna and the vulnerable. Please find the list of needed food items in the insert of our church bulletin.

We will be sorting and bagging the donated groceries in preparation for Thanksgiving on November 21st. Volunteers are welcome to join us in the Courtyard at 9am, Monday.

We are blessed to serve the vulnerable and continue to encounter God and Witness to Jesus through our Catholic Care Project. Mahalo.

One of the worldʻs most troubling open wounds is the trade in human beings, a modern form of slavery, which violates the God-given dignity of so many of our brothers and sisters and constitutes a true crime against humanity.”

--Pope Francis The Holy Father stressed that more needs to be done to raise public awareness of this scourge, to build coalitions with governmental agencies, and service providers and to care for those wounded in their dignity and scarred by their experiences. To this end, the Amistad Movement, an anti-trafficking initiative under the auspices of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops invited our diocese to attend a training conference in San Antonio, Texas on November 4 through November 6.

A team from our parish participated in this conference to learn more about the Amistad Movement and we were gratified to see that the conference was attended by more than 40 participants representing many diocese and service providers, a clear sign that there is a deep commitment to end this evil and to heal the profound suffering that it visits upon our brothers and sisters.

Since our return, we have begun to enter into dialogue with various anti-trafficking agencies and we will keep you informed as to our progress. We thank you for your prayers and support of our mission.

• DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION & CHAPLET Friday 10:45 am, followed by Rosary & Benediction Devotions of the Catholic Church are ways of showing our love to the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels and the saints. These can be done privately or as communal, oral prayer. The Church has always encouraged private, personal prayer such as meditation, in which the mind, in God’s presence, thinks about God and divine things.

The times listed above indicate when the communal, oral devotions should begin in order to allow time afterwards for meditation and personal reflection, including 15 minutes of silence before Mass begins.

No group or communal prayers will be allowed outside of the schedule in order to respect the time for personal private prayer.

Ministries and apostolates are encouraged to help with these devotions. Please call the parish office to indicate your interest.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) For the last few decades, many adults (18+) have embarked on their own journey in faith through RCIA to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Sts. Peter and Paul Church will begin another RCIA process in September. This process is for those who are not baptized or baptized in another faith and are interested in joining the Catholic Church.

For those who are baptized and have not been Confirmed or have not received their First Holy Communion, you are welcome to join us in preparing to complete your Sacraments of Initiation.

YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY

Are you between the ages of 18 – 39, in college, married or single and wish to grow more in your faith?

The Sts. Peter & Paul Young Adult Ministry cordially invites you to the Young Adult Community which meets Sundays at 7:00 p.m. after the 6:00 p.m. Mass.

Family Mass is on the 1 and 3 Sunday of each at 9:00 a.m. During the Family Mass, the homily is addressed to families and to the children, giving them a better understanding of the Scripture readings. The children read Scripture that is from a Children's Lectionary.

Our next Family Mass will be on November 20 at 9:00 a.m.

There is dismissal for Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on the other Sundays. Father will invite the children forward for a blessing. The children proceed to the reception area where a church like atmosphere is provided for them to hear the Word of God through prayers, song and readings that they are able to better understand and learn how to be disciples of Jesus. Children will rejoin their families at the Preparation of the Gifts (Offertory).

Faith Formation classes will follow after the 9am Mass. rd

We are still looking for Catechists and Aides for 3 th to 7 grades.
