MARDI GRAS Join us for an evening of fun and fellowship! Tuesday, February 28,2017 " 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sts. Peter and Paul Church Courtyard

Food Beverages, Bingo, Movie, Raffle Prizes, Pifrata for the children, Blessing of the Palms

The meaning of Mardi Gras: ln Christianity, Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday" and also known as Carnival and Shrove Tuesday) is the last day before the beginning of Lent, a period of fasting and repentance leading up to Easter, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Traditionally, rich foods such as eggs, meat, oils and butter were strictly prohibited during the 40 days of Lent. So it became customary to eat all that remained of these foods in the house and enjoy one last feast on the day before the 40-day fast. Another common name for the holiday, Carnival, also refers to this last enjoyment of rich foods. Some believe it derives from the medieval Lalin, carnelevarium, which means to take away or remove meat. The name Shrove Tuesday derives from the practice of "shriving", or the confession and absolution of sin, that takes place on that day.

Sts. Peter and Paul Church What is offered here by our Savior are admonitions for the banner of authentic Christianity: to forgive one another and to bear our sufferings with patience. These are not easy w<jids to hear from our Lord, and perhaps it's

worth mentioning that these

words

were also difficult, if not more difficult to hear, by the witnesses of lesus' teaching, because of how they understood the old Law.

READINGS

First Reading - Leviticus 19:'L-2,17-18 Our heavenly Father is calling us to be like Him ho1;r. We may irave an idea as to what constitutes Iioliness, but to be holy like God is holy is beyond our full uudcrstanding. and ',vithout Him, completely irnpossible. The word of Cod encollrages us to reprove onr brotliers iind sisters in the Lord to avoid halboririg hatred lor them in our heart.

One of the great weaknesses of being lruman is our stubborn inability

to accept a

dlfferent take on something that has already

been

engraved into our minds. ln action/adventure movies, for example, we like to see the bad guy get what he deserves in the end. To see the victim forgive hislher assailant makes for a disappointing conclusion to the movie.

ln this Gospel passage and otlrers, this is the Jesus in which we are tempted to keep a safe distance from. lt's a blast to follow Him from

town to town and read about the miracles He performed; but suddenly we get a Jesus Who is delivering difficult words

-

not only

- but He wants us to embrace them. After all, a watered down Christianity is much easier to live - isn't it? But really difficult to hear

what Jesus is saying to us is that the way of the world is not the way of God, and we, therefore, have to be radically different. True

discipleship demands that each day, little by little, we are being transformed into the lmage of Jesus. What makes the diificult sayings of Jesus so difficult is that we're not divine beings; but, what makes not being divine bearable is that there is a sacran'tent of healing. Otherwise, Iove {or Jesus could end up in an abyss of disappointment and self-pity due to our failings. Christianity is a courageous act. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: "Christ Jesus always did what was pleasing to the Father, and always lived in perfect communion with Him. Likewise Christ's disciples are invited to live in the sight of the Father Who sees in secret, in order to become perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect" (CCC 159j).

Our Redeemer's words are about love - not pacifism. Every lruman being has dignity and is loved by God. Thus, to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect requires love. We're well-trained at voicing four letters words at those who perpetrate something contrary to decency. Our heavenly Father, however, looks at such a person with

love and sees him/her as someone who

in

human

weakness

succumbed to evil. That is love and that is perfection. lsn't that really the point of Christ being tempted in the desert: to dralv out into the daylight the one wlio hides in darkness, who crawls under rocks and gets others to do his dirty work

*

in other words, the real enemy?

1 Corinthians 3:16-23

Saiul Paul is trying to sell the idea that \ye are a tempie of * aird ho1y. The holy apostle surely understood this apparent contradiction by writing: "Let no one deceive hiniself-." lt is only by the grace of God. dwelling within us. that \ve are able to guard ourselves f1'om the things u,hich deceptively seek our ruin. Jesus came to make knorvn the glory of God and all His perfections, to which He calls us to share in. Eaclr of ns, as baptized members of the body of Christ, are disciples, like Paul and Cephas. God

Matthew 5:3848

As ne are loved and forgiven by God, we are to love and forgive others. God the Father sent his son, Jesus, to rvin our salr, ation and reveal the rvay u,e need to live. that u,e rnighl come to share etemal life in heaven. The teachings of Jesus make it clear that Cod loves us without limit, and is evcr-lvilling to forgive. llhus, to rvalk in God's tvay of iove rve must strive to love all people, including our enelnies, arrd be lviiling to forgive.

Devotions of the Catholic Church are ways of showing our love to the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels and the saints. These can be done privately or as communal, oral prayer. The Church has always encouraged private, personal prayer such as meditation, in which the mind, in God's presence, thinks about God and divine things. The times listed above indicate when the communal, oral devotions should begin in order to allow time afterwards for meditation and personal reflection, including I-5_ mrnUtg_S- ,ol s[e_gg1 befglq l[qqq begi.11s.

No group or communal prayers will be

allowed outside of the schedule in order to respect the time for personal private prayer.

Ministries and apostolates are encouraged to help with these devotions. Please call the parish office to indicate your interest. ASH WEDNESDAY is on March

'A sharp tongue is the only edge[d] tool that grows keener with constant use," wrote Washington Irving. In other words, if we constantly and carelessly misuse God's name, we may stop feeling sorry that it offends him. That irreverent attitude is more offensive-and more dangerous-than the vocabulary.
