GOOD NEWS }-t:- lz Corinthians S;L4-a7 / Mark +35-+t My brother, sister, and I learned to sail when we were young. Of all the lessons we had, the one I remember nearly verbatim was "Signs of an Approaching Storm." I can reel off the list as though it were yesterday: dark, low, fast-moving clouds, a sudden shift in wind direction and velocity, a sudden change in temperature.

Job 38:r,

To this day, when I experience any of these things, I close windows and make sure everything is inside. Ithink the apostles who were seasoned fishermen must have had similar training, and I have often wondered why they just didn't make for shore when they noticed the signs. But then remember that some storms move in very quickly and, if you are in the middle of the sea, you can't make it to shore easily. The apostles may have decided to ride it out and then realized they could not. I

It must have struck the apostles as odd that Jesus was peacefully asleep while they battled rising water and fierce wind. They were afraid of losing their lives. When they woke Jesus up, Scripture says that he "rebuked" the wind and the sea. The same word is used when.Jesus casts out demons. The result is peace-at least on the sea or in the person who is possessed. But for the disciples and for us, the act inspires awe and not a little anxiety: "Who then is this?" The answer unfolds for us throughout the Gospels. Jesus is Lord overthe wind and sea, over all creation, and over us as well. ln storm or calm, he brings his peace and shows us God's glory. M an1

Wednesday, June z3: Eucharistic Adr:ration from 8:3o--9:00 a.m. Thursday, June z4:

The Foftnight for Freedom is a two-week period of prayer, education, and action in support of religious liberty. The theme of this year's Fortnight is Freedom to Bear Witness, a focus on how religious freedom enables us to bear witness to the truth of the Gospel. ln a June 8, zor5 interview by Catholic Review, Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori, who chairs the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty, noted that when it comes to religious freedom, "like any blessing God has given, if we want to preserlre it and use it well, we have to pray about it." To learn more about the Fortnight for Freedom and to access materials and other resources, go to www.Fortnight4Freedom.org. A z-minute video from the USCCB highlighting how the Church bears witness to Christ can be found at https://www.youtu be. com/watch?v=Wcj4cBJorqO.

June z7 & z8 diocese will take up the Peter's Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those

who are suffering. Next

Catholics are a sacramental people. We use objects and works of art to reveal and remind us of God's presence and love acting in our lives. So we should respect statues. paintings, images, and sacred art. These items are valuable and make our churches beautiful. Sacred art helps us to enter into prayer. We do not adore these items as idols, but they help us to meditate and contemplate on God. Therefore, we should respect the sensibilities of other people. Too many items around a work of art may distract people or even damage the art. So every, thing should be kept in its right place. For example, hymnals belong in their proper place. On the other hand. items near the art may enhance our prayer experience. A prayer card that is associated with a statue may be nearby, or flowers may enhance the beauty of the art. But this should always be done tastefully and with the parish's perm ission. In this way, we keep God's house clean and in order. Everything has a reason for where it is, and everything should be in its proper place. FR. D O N KIRC H N ER, C SsR srr irri.r-r bti iict in 1i i igu"rl 11rg i

This saint was highly honored throughout the whole GrurchJrom the beginning.?roof of f his is, among other things, jhe fact that f ifteenchurchesr&ere dedicated to him in the ancient imperialtity of Constantinople. Beinglhe precursor of ourlord, hewasaccorded the same honor as the fir$ great saints of the Christian era, although he belonged tolhe OldXovenant. TheJact that Christ praised him so highly (Matthew 11, 11) encouraged, of @urse, a specialr/eneration. Accordingly, wefind a regular cycle of fea$s in his honor among the early Chri$ian churches. .. the Churdr celebrates hisnatural birth by a fe$ival of his "nativity," assigned exactly sx months beforelhe nativity of Christ, since John was six months older than the Lord. As soon as the Fea$ 0f Christmaswas e$ablished on December2s (in the fifth century) thedate 0f the Bapt ist's bi rt h was assigned to June24. htt ps://www. cat hol icorlt ure. org/cult urdl it urgicalyear/ad ivit ied vis/t/.cfm?d=1126
