John 6:24-35
Where does food come from? ln an effort to teach our children that food didn't come from grocery stores, my husband and I helped them plant tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans in our back yard. The yield was small, but the reward was great as they tasted the work of their hands. We had somewhat more difficulty explaining the source of our protein, though they did learn how to fish. We cooked what they caught. I think they grew in appreciation of the hard work it took to put food on the table. We also learned the importance of sharing what we had by cooking for others and collecting canned goods for our local pantry. The lsraelites in the desert wondered where food was going to come from as well. The desert they wandered through was a far cry from Egypt. They forgot their enslavement and remembered only the food that they had, which seemed like a banquet compared to whatthe desert provided. There was nothing to plant and no place to plant it. The lsraelites had to rely solely on God. God did not disappoint. First he sent quail, then a miraculous bread that was as much as they needed. lt was a lesson in faith we all need to learn.
As city dwellers, we have grown to rely on the farmers, butchers, and fisherman who supply our daily food. As Christians, we again must rely solely on God for our spiritual nourishment. He sent us his Son, Jesus, who is the true bread from heaven. lf we come to him, we will never hunger. Ma

ANNUAL MISSIONS APPEAL-Message frorn Fr. Gerald Dear brothers and sisters, Just a note to thank you for all your kindness during my Mission Appeal here last weekend. Coming from a remote part of Africa, I never envisioned even having contact with Hawaiian people, much less with St. Stephen's Parishioners. I was so impressed with your deep faith and devotion at Mass, and concelebrating the Sunday Llturgy with you will be one of my most vivid memories of America. Last but not least I thank Fr. Mario for hosting me for all these days and
kindness. Furthermore, I thank everyone of you for your overwhelming generosity to my church in the Diocese of Geita in Tanzaria. In the name of my people, I am deeply grateful and I thank you for your generous heart. Be assured of my prayers hoping that we shall continue being in touch.

II{I\HALO Thank you for the opportunity to serve in many ways here at the parish, especially as your bulletin editor. We are handing over the baton to Stan Contrades. I am also grateful to Sts. Peter and Paul parish for offering me a position when the one here was terminated due to lack of funds. Please be well and my God bless all our families. (RH,)
de ar PAD Rf, Could you explain
A
the phrase, "There

I?"
.We
all have our natural talents and abilities.'[/e have our strengths and our weaknesses. It is part of the virtue of humility to know the truth about ourselves. However, our natural abilities are finite and limited.
finite and limited, we sometimes fail to do the good we would like to do, or we might even sin because we have not judged a situation correctly. H6$7sys1- thanks be to God-grace builds on nature. So if we are open to God's grace, we have access to overcoming some of the finite effects of nature. This does not mean you can fly like Superman. But it does mean you might be able to judge a situation more clearly; have insight into what is right, good, and true; or that you might have a renewed inner strengh. So when a person uses this phrase, he is not saying that the person he is speaking about is not open to God's grace, but he's acknowledging that without God's help in his own life, he could be in the same or worse situation due to his own weakness. Thus, we need to be open to the grace of God working in our lives. Because we are
