Sts:

Petii and Fatil Chuich

Etieffi$Er4;.12.0.1,6 READINGS

Saint John the Baptist was the last of the Old Testament prophets and precursor New Testament. His desert lifestyle makes him the perfect model for the eremitic way of life. As he was to be the dividing line between the Old and New Testament, his form of baptism was also the dividing line

the

of the

between the Jewish ceremonial bath known as a "mikvah" and Christ's ordination of the Sacrament of Baptism. lt has the characteristics of the Jewish ceremonial bath as well as a quasi rebirth. The acceptance of John's form of baptism was an admission that the Kingdom of God was indeed at hand along with a willingness to remedy past faults, thus earning God's grace.

John proclaims his baptism for repentance but there will be One Who will come after him, Who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. Here John intimates about the Divinity of Jesus. lnteresting also is that this is exactly what happened at Pentecost reminding us that among other things John the Baptist was indeed a prophet.

John the Baptist also states that he is not worthy lo carry the sandals of Jesus. This statement would have been very understandable to the people of his day because it was customary for a slave to carry a change of sandals for his master. Therefore, John, in complete humility proclaims his unworthiness to even be a slave for Jesus Christ. In a way, like John the Baptist, we are called to be precursors ourselves. We are the children of God set apart to proclaim the glorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ by the example of our lives; helping each other by word and deed, heralding Jesus as the Way and only Way to eternal salvation - a gift we are sent to proclaim while at the same time being fully aware of our unworthiness to be recipients of it. .......-....--....i

Isaiah 77:1-70

The prophet Isaiah provides a wonderful synbol for Advent, a shoot growing out of a dead stump. This season reminds us that life is always open to change and renewal. Isaiah understood that his peoples' lives were not yet over. And our lives are not over, even when our dreams have died and our hopes have vanished.

Second Reading

- Romans

75:4-9

If

peace is ever to be achieved, the world must see that harmonious living is possible. Demonstrating such harmony is one task of the church. As newborn people spiritually, we are called to be a o'new humanity," a community in which human differences do not divide us.

Gospel - Matthew 3:7-72 John the Baptizer appeared with a stern waming.

It

rvas that the kingdom of God has nothing to do with ethnic identity, or class standing, or even religious affiliation. All of those who genuinely

reform their lives and live in peace and justice are citizens of the kingdom of God.

What identifies a steward? Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generous giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more. As Christian stewards, we receive God's gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly in justice with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. TIME-TALENT-TREASURE A THANKSGIVING THANK YOU!

We thank the members of the Legion of Mary and the Pastoral

Council for the

wonderful Thanksgiving celebration. We were so happy to see over 100 Kupuna and parishioners enjoying the company of each other. This.was a marked contrast to the 20 who celebrated the first Thanksgiving at our church last year! This Thanksgiving we were able to continue one of our Outreach traditions with Foodland gift cards and food bags. We thank you again for the non-perishable food you share with the poor, vulnerable and to those in need. The gifts God gives to us is so generously shared with others. Mahalo!

Devotions of the Catholic Ghurch are ways of showing our love to the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels and the saints. These can be done privately or as communal, oral prayer. The Church has always encouraged private, personal prayer such as meditation, in which the mind, in God's presence, thinks about God and divine things.

The times listed above indicate when

the communal, oral devotions should begin in order to allow time afierwards for meditation and personal reflection, including 15 minutes of silence before Mass beqins.

No group or communal prayers will be allowed outside of the schedule in order to respect the time for personal private prayer.

Ministries and apostolates are encouraged to help with these devotions. Please call the parish office to indicate your interest.

Officially called "Misa de Aguinaldo". These are nine days of masses at dawn (before daybreak; before Christmas day to offer thanksgiving to God for the gift of His Only Begotten Son, the lncarnate Word. lnterchangeably "Misa de Gallo" (Mass of the Rooster) and "simbang Gabi" are also used but originally both referred more to the Midnight Mass of the Nativity. The Misa Aguinaldo was introduced in the Diocese of Honolulu more than two decades ago and the number of parishes offering has increased years. through the lt was first introduced at Sts. Peter and Paul in 2O14 and this is the 3'd year that our parish will celebrate these 9 days dawn

it

masses.

Aside from asking

for

perseverance and

preservation of the Catholic faith, symbolically we can add that for nine days we accompany the Blessed Virgin Mary waiting for the celebration of the birth of her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, the true Sun that will never set. After all, the United States of America is under the patronage of Our Blessed Mother under her title as the lmmaculate Conception and the titular of the Diocese of Honolulu under her title as Our Lady of Peace.
