READINGS
Saint
Joseph exhibits exemplary sanctity. He surely felt betrayed before he knew that the Holy Spirit was the Source of this Child, and yet he had no intentions of humiliating Mary or subjecting her to public . scrutiny. There's nothing in the text that suggests that Mary had any inkling as to what Joseph's intentions were, and so, we might conclude that Joseph even spared Mary's feelings by not divulging his own inner emotions.
FirstReading
This Gospel passage is preceded by the genealogy of Christ and is careful not to express that Joseph begot Jesus: "Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, Who is called Christ" (Matthew 1:16). Since that verse could leave newcomers to the Jesus story scratching their heads, the text of this weekend's Gospel explains the circumstances.
The Apostle Paul understood that Christmas is about
Joseph's appearance in this Gospel is apparent for two reasons: First, to show his legal paternity which justifies his part in the genealogy; and secondly, to show his virginal relationship with Mary and his ultimate conviction of the miraculous conception. ln ancient Jewish

husband was free to do this at any time.
It's assumed that Joseph was unaware of Mary's condition until after she returned from visiting Elizabeth (cf.
Luke 1:39-56) but before he took her into his home. lts unclear as to how Joseph found out about Mary's condition. Since Joseph had decided to quietly divorce Mary, that's pretty clear evidence he was unwilling to acknowledge the Child as his own. lt was his supernatural dream, which changed his course of action. This Child, although not biologically his, was now his more than any other man could lay claim to because Jesus was the miraculously conceived Child of Joseph's betrothed. The name Jesus or Yeshua means "Yahweh is Salvation" and the text is clear that the purpose of His birth is to save us from our sins.

REC]TATION OF THE HOLY ROSARY Monday - Saturday (11:15 a.m.) will be led in different languages as follows Monday - Filipino & English Tuesday - Korean Wednesday - Legion of Mary (English) Thursday - Chuukese Friday - lnternational Saturday for Families Sunday 5:1Spm - Young Adults OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP Wednesday following the 7am Mass MOST SACRED HEART OF JESUS DEVOTION Friday following the 7am Mass DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION & CHAPLET Friday 10:45 am, followed by Rosary & Benediction
Devotions of the Gatholic Church are ways of showing our love to the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels and the saints. These can be done privately or as communal, oral prayer. The Church has always encouraged private, personal prayer such as meditation, in which the mind, in God's presence, thinks about God and divine things.
The times listed above indicate when the communal, oral devotions should begin in order to allow time afterwards for meditation and personal reflection, including 15 minutes of silence before Mass begins.
No group or communal prayers will be allowed outside of the schedule in order to respect the time for personal private prayer.
Ministries and apostolates are encouraged to help with these devotions. Please call the parish office to indicate your interest.

Dun?qd/@, Why is St. Joseph called "the Worker?" Shouldn't he be honored primarily as the father of Jesus? evotion to St. |oseph has developed along an interesting path. It was not until the eighth century that foseph, underneath the title "spouse of Mary," was even publicly acknowledged-except perhaps as an afterthought or silent participant in the Christmas story. The Church has always acknowledged that foseph's relationship with Iesus was unique, but there was, and continues to be, reluctance to call him the father of lesus. We understand the father of Iesus is not foseph but rather God the Father. A consensus about |oseph's role in the plan of salvation seems to be in place by the early fourteenth century. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared |oseph the patron ofthe universal Church. By the early twentieth century, worldwide devotion had found a home at St. foseph's Oratory in Montreal. The title of "the Worker" was used most often by Pope Pius XI in his references to foseph as the patron of the Church's battle against atheistic communism. Pope Pius XII established the May 1 feast in 1955 to emphasize the Catholic teaching concerning the dignity of labor. Saint |oseph could be summarized best as a man who did the best he could when God's will became clear. This image and model seems the best and most helpful for deepening our understanding of and devotion to him. From Dear Padre: Questions People Ask, Liguori, 2003
