READINGS

Saint John the Baptist, as the prophesied precur$or, was given the graces to fulfill that office; and now in this Gospel

passage

he

reveals what

he

knows: First, Jesus is the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world. Secondly, even though Jesus was born after John, He existed before John and ranks ahead of John. Thirdly, John proclaims that he saw the

Spirit descend from heaven and remain

on

Jesus. Fourthly, Jesus is the One Who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. And finally, like a good mystery novel, John the Baptist saves the real jaw dropper for last: Jesus is the Son of God.

A lamb symbolizes innocence but it cannot be easily determined if John is identifying Jesus as a Victim when he proclaims Christ as the Lamb Who takes away the sin of the world. Today, all of us without hesitation could read Victimization into John's statement because we know the fullness of the Jesus story; and that being a Victim was necessary to take away the sin of the world. ln the Book of the Prophet lsaiah a cruel destiny is alluded to with the words, "Like a lamb led to the slaughter" (lsaiah 53:7): but whether John the Baptist had this in mind is uncertain. Even though Jesus was born after John, Christ is depicted as existing before John, which identifies Jesus as God and Man although the hearers of John's proclamation probably that connection. When John says, did not knors Him" most likely he means by physical visualization since John spent about twenty years of his life in the wilderness. John knew Christ was of Divine Origin even before the appearance of the Holy Spirit as a Dove because when Christ came to be baptized, John said to Him: "l ought to be baptized by You" (Matthew 3:14),

Isaiah 49:3,5-6

The ancient Israelites thought of themselves as the Chosen People of God. They took this to mean that they were the recipients of God's special love and care. But the great prophets of ancient Israel proclaimed a new understanding of the covenant. The children of God were to be a light to the nations so salvation could extend to the ends of the earth. Corinthians 1:L-3

We are called by God and consecrated in Christ to be a holy people. This means that we must be diligent in keeping our thoughts and deeds pure. We need to clear out the dark concerns of our minds and clear thc secret recesses ofour heart ofall sin. Christ gives us the strength we need to be a holy people.

Gospel

- ]ohn 1:29-34

John proclaimed that Jesus was the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. Jesus does not just cover up our sins with his saving love. He does not just cancel out of sins by his saving grace. He takes our sins arvay. They do not remain as bitter memories or embarrassing moments. FIe buries them in the sea of his forgiveness.

The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and lnternational Union of Superiors General has designated February 8 as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. February B is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped

the

as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and ltaly. Once Josephine was freed, she became a Canossian nun and dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in 2000. On February B, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phenomenon. Through prayer, we not only reflect on the experiences of those that have suffered through this affront to human dignity, but also comfort, strengthen, and help empower survivors.

The term'spirit" refers to the "nelv self" brought about by Christ's redemption and governed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10). and so on (Galatians 5:19-21). The Spirit gives rise to love, peace, kindness, self-control, and the like (Galatians 5:22-23). These fruits emerge from good works, manifest God's presence in the person doing them, and edify those who observe them. In other words, they are the visible ways in which the Holy Spirit guides and directs us and throtrgh which the Spirit touches others. The Catechism defines the frtrits of the Spirit as 'perfections," "the first fruits of eternal glory" (CCC L832). The more we renounce ourselves, our 'flesh," in imitation of Christ, the more we can bear good fruit (CCC 736; see also John 15). Fr. Daniel L. Lowery, CSsR sundaybulletin@liguori.org
