READINGS
Jesus is preaching what is traditionally known as the
Beatitudes.
The
word "beatitude" means "supreme blessedness".
The mountain can be symbolic of a couple of things. First, the mountain
is
Christ's pulpit
which
depicts Him as the Creator because from a mountain
one can see all that surrounds it and thus
echoes the words from the psalmist under the guidance of the Holy Spirit: "The world is Mine and the fullness thereof' (Psalm a9 [50]:12). Secondly, as disciples of Christ, the mountain is a reminder to us that receiving the promises of the Beatitudes will be an uphill climb.
ln this Gospel passage Christ's homily is preceded by the words: "He began to teach them, saying. . ." These words are a little more instructive in the ancient texts because they translate as: "And opening His Mouth. ." These words imply that Jesus was always teaching but the ancient usage chooses to make a distinction between opening His Mouth and/or speaking versus His silence and/or actions.
The Beatitudes inform us that we will mourn; we will hunger and thirst for righteousness, be persecuted and insulted. But our faithfulness promises the Kingdom of heaven, comfort, inheritance, satisfaction, mercy, and the privilege of being called children of God.
It's interesting to contrast the ways of God with the way humanity sees things. The sufferings laid out for us in this Gospel, by human standards are all negatives in this sojourn of life; but Christ declares blessed all the victims of these sufferings. And for this reason our faith and trust in
God must exceed what we perceive as common sense. Our lives need not be bogged down by our situation - but instead lifted up because of our trust in revelation.
First Reading
-
Zephaniah 223,3tL2-13
The prophel Zephaniah spoke to a people beaten down by their enemies. But he did not call them to battle. He called them to repentance and renewal. He exhorted them to seek justice and to seek humility. The future belonged to those who observed the laws of God by cloing justice and walking humbly.
Second Reading
-
L Corinthians 1:26-31
The early church was not filled with well-born and influential people. Not many of them were wise or powerful as humankind counts wisdom and power. But God chose the lowborn and despised to drive home the point that all human good comes from God. God chose those who count for nothing to show the world the things that really count.
Gospel

Matthew 5:1-12a
Jesus taught a revolutionary faith. He found strength
in
rveakness, wealth
in poverty, joy in
sorrow,
greatness in humility. His faith was strong enough to turn any situation into an experience of blessedness. His faith was deep enough to find something good in
every circumstance.

Catholic Schools Week is a celebration of all the elements of our school that make it such a great place- students, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and the entire parish community. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2017 is "Catholic Schools: Communities of
Faith, Knowledge and Service." The
annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2017 is January 29th to February 4th. Schools typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with Masses, open houses, and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large.
The theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, schools are communities-small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of horne, church, city and nation. Faith,

The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the lnternational Union of Superiors General has designated February B as an annual day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. February B is the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita, who was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery in Sudan and ltaly. Once Josephine was freed, she became a Canossian nun and dedicated her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. She was declared a Saint in 2000. On February B, Catholics all over the world are encouraged to host or attend prayer services to create greater awareness about this phenomenon. Through prayer, we not only reflect on the experiences of those that have suffered through this affront to human dignity, but also comfort, strengthen, and help empower survivors.

Falth Formation Living Catholic in the 808: Making the Facts of Salvation Real
Welcome to our Faith Formation Ministry! This Sunday, children are invited to participate in the Children's Literacy of the Word.
There are many ways to begin to share our faith. You could invite someone to Mass, engage in an intellectual discussion, or go see a Christian movie. However. sharing your story is one of the most powerlul starting points. Your faith story is precious; God can and '*,ill use your story as an instrument of salvation in another.
What is the Children's Liturgy?
The Children's Liturgy is a sharing of the Gospel of the
Pope Francis encourages us, "Today, there is a kind of preaching which falls to each of us as a daily responsibility. It has to do rvith bringing the Gospel to the people we meet, rvhether they be our neighbors or complete strangers. This is the informal preaching which takes place in the middle of a conversation. Being a disciple means being constantly ready to bring the
day at a level the children can understand and enjoy. The children will participate in prayer, song, art, and story-telling about God's love, the humanity of fesus, the Seasons of the Church, and the understanding of
love of Jesus to others and this can happcn unexpectedly and in any place: on the street, in a city square, during rvork, on a journey. This is a personal dialogue, when the other speaks and shares his or her joys, hopes ar:d collcems tbr loved ones or so many other heartfelt needs. (Evangelii Gaudium, n. 127).
The Children's Liturgy of the Word aims to introduce children to important aspects of God's message by:
symbols in the Mass^
-Helping them understand the Word of God -Helping them receive God's Word in their hearts -Helping them to respond to God's Word in their family life and elsewhere
it has changed one person. Your personal story makes the facts of salvation concrete, real, specific and personal. The Gospel means little unless

Whv Fatima?
May 1, i. ,n" ltOOt*; anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady to three shepherd children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917.
What happened at Fatima? The story of Fatima begins in
1916,
when, against the backdrop of the First World War which had introduced Europe to the most horrific and powerful forms of warfare yet seen, and a year before the Communist revolution would plunge Russia and later Eastern Europe into six decades of oppression under militant atheistic governments, a resplendent figure appeared to the three children, (Lucia, 9, and her cousins Francisco, 8 and his sister Jacinta, 6) who were in the field tending the family sheep. "l am the Angel of Peace," said the figure, who appeared to them two more times that year exhorting them to accept the sufferings that the Lord allowed them to undergo as an act of reparation for the sins which offend Him, and to pray constantly for the conversion of sinners. Then, on the 13th day of the month of Our Lady, May 1917 , an apparition of 'a woman all in white, more brilliant than the sun' presented itself to the three children saying "Please don't be afraid of me, l'm not going to harm you." Lucia
asked her where she came from and
she responded, "l come from Heaven." The woman wore a white mantle edged with gold and held a rosary in her hand. The woman asked them to pray and devote themselves to the Holy Trinity and to "say the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end to the war."
She also revealed that the children would suffer, especially from the unbelief of their friends and families, and that the two younger children, Francisco and Jacinta would be taken to Heaven very soon but Lucia would live longer in order to spread her message and devotion to the lmmaculate Heart.

The message of Fatima What is the central meaning of the message of Fatima? Nothing different from what the Church has always taught: it is, as Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict the XVl, has put it, "the exhortation to prayer as the path of "salvation for souls" and, likewise, the summons to penance and conversion."
Perhaps the most well known utterance of the apparition of Our Lady at Fatima was her confident declaration that "My lmmaculate Heart will triumph". ...The Evil One has power in this world, as we see and experience continually; he has power because our freedom continually lets itself be led away from God. But since God himself took a human heart and has thus steered human freedom towards what is good, the freedom to choose evil no longer has the last word. From that time forth, the word that prevails is this: "ln the world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). The message of Fatima invites us to trust in this promise. "The gootl will be

The Miracle of the Sun On the day of the last apparition, 70,000 people had turned out to witness the apparition, following a promise by the woman that she would show the people that the apparitions were true. They saw the sun make three circles and move around the sky in an incredible zigzag movement in a manner which left no doubt in their minds about the veracity of the apparitions By 1930 the Bishop had approved of the apparitions and they have been approved by the Church as authentic.

he Code of Canon Law identifies the pastor as the shepherd of the parish. His duties require him to teach, sanctify, and govern the people entrusted to his care. However, canon law also envisions that he engage in pastoral care "with the assistance of lay members of the Christian faithful" (519). \ It would be fair to assert that the intention of the law is to encourage the building up of a community using the "knowledge, prudence, and integrity" of every member (228). klany issues, feelings, and even theologies make up the personalities of a parish. The one constant that needs to be present is the presumption of good will (Catechism af the Catholic Chttrch, 2478).lf that is missing, then conflict, hard feelings, and many misunderstandings will result. Without taking sides, I suggest that everyone takes a deep breath. Then eacl'r of you-the pastor included-ask yourself, "Have I attempted to interpret this person or situation favorably? Have I made any rash fudgments?" If honest and prayerful reflection reveal less-than-good intentions, now is the time to change your attitude and acknowledge that a new start is needed.
