Where caring people are cared for.
Sts. Peter and Paul Church
lf obsession for riches leads to hating God, can there be any more motive to serve God? What is the end result of chasing after
what Saint Paul calls corruptibilem caronam corruptible crown (ct.
a 1
Corinthians 9:25)? Anxiety over life in the here and now has a way of pulling one's heart and soul away from God. The treasures of are enticing and could deceive one into thinking that they are the answer to all of life's problems - that is, what will ultimately lead to happiness. Any joy or comfort received from this life is all too fleeting because nothing in this life can last forever.
ln our liturgy's translation we read: "Do not worry about your life" - the Latin text translates as: "Be not solicitous for your life" and is understood to mean "too solicitous" - in other words, "don't worry about your life too much." The very essence of life on planet earth renders cause for concern.
An ltalian Jesuit Scripture scholar named Giovanni Stefano Menochio wrote these words in the seventeenth-century: "Christ does not prohibit all care about temporal concerns, but only what hinders us from seeking the Kingdom of heaven in the first instance; or what rnakes us esteem
more the things
of this world, than those of
First Reading - Isaiah49:'1,&15 There are times when we feel forsaken and forgotten by God. But a loving mother would sooner abandon her newborn child than God could forsake or forget us. He always cares for his own beloved sons and daughters. Second Reading - 1 Corinthians 4:L-5
The world sees only natural law and human agency behind the overall scheme of things. But
God is at work in the depth of things, bringing about his eternal purposes. We Christians have the joyous task of sharing in God's hidden care for the whole creation. Gospel - Mafthew 6:2*34
We would all live with a lot less fear and a lot more joy if we took these words of Jesus to heart. We are not left to struggle alone against an uncaring world and indifferent society. God is at work in the shadows keeping watch over his own.
the
next." Thus, living a worry-free life is virtually unattainable except perhaps for the supernaturalty gifted soul immersed in constant prayer. Such a soul lived in our modern time Saint Pio of Pietrelcina or as he is perhaps rnore affectionately referred to simply as Padre Pio. ln fact, among the phrases that is said to have flowed from his lips is: "Pray, hope, and don't worry."
Our Savior tells us that today has enough burdens of its own and worrying about tomorrow will only add to the load of today. Referring again to William Hessels van Est or Esfius, the Pauline epistles' commentator, he leaches us something about the great gift of faith - he wrote: "lt is the curse of the envious and wicked to be self'tormented, while they who live by faith, can always rejoice in hope, the true balm of every Christian's breast, the best friend of all in distress."

ln Christianity, Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday" and also known as Carnival and Shrove Tuesday) is the last day before the beginning of Lent, a period of fasting and repentance leading up to Easter, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Traditionally, rich foods such as eggs, meat, oils and butter were strictly prohibited during the 40 days of Lent. So, it became customary to eat all that remained of these foods in the house and enjoy one last feast on the day before the 40-day fast.

Carnival, also refers to this last enjoyment of rich foods. Some believe it derives from the medieval Latin carnelevarium, which means to take away or remove meat. The name "Shrove Tuesday" derives from the practice of "shriving," or the confession and absolution of sin, that takes place on that day.

DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION & CHAPLET Friday 10:45 am, followed by Rosary & Benediction
Devotions of the Catholic Church are ways of showing our love to the Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the angels and the saints. These can be done privately or as communal, oral prayer. The Church has always encouraged private, personal prayer such as meditation, in which the mind, in God's presence, thinks about God and divine things. The times listed above indicate when the communal, oral devotions should begin in order to allow time afterwards for meditation and personal reflection,

Children who are preparing for Confirmation and First l{oly Communion received their Rite of Reconciliation this Saturday. How will I know if my child is ready for Confirmation? Readiness for Confirmation cannot be separated from readiness for Eucharist, and sacramental readiness is never about learning, but about faith. As you child prepares for Confirmation and Eucharist, here are three things to keep in mind:
o o o o o
The baptized need the sanctifying grace of Confirmation earlier, not later in life. Sacraments are always a beginning. As you child matures in faith, he/she will grow in his/her understanding of Confirrnation and experience of the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the culmination of the three Sacraments of Initiation. Your child is now welcomed as a fully participating member of the church. .At any age, completion of the Sacraments of Initiation-Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist-in signals graduation. Rather it is the beginning of a lifetirne of being 6, ':, no " . way :"-' ::?"-.'" nourished at the table of the Lord.

am reminded of Paul's personal struggle as expressed in Romans: "What I Ido, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.... Now if [] do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me....Miserable one that I am!Who will deliver me...?" (7:15,20,24). Remain faithful to your religious practices, and don't get down on yourself. Having immoral tendencies does not make you a hypocrite; it makes you human. All people experience the struggle between good and evil within themselves in one way or another. It may be helpful to find a spiritual director or counselor who can help you deal with your weaknesses. You could learn how to be more disciplined in prayer and how to overcome your preoccupation with pornography. Keep trying to accentuate the positive and deal with the negative. You say God is holding on to you. Remember that Francis Thompson called God "the Hound of Heaven." God does not let go easily. Fr. Daniel L. Lowery, CSsR sundaybulletin @ liguori.org
