This Week's Mass schedule
Everything we know about the husband of Mary and the foster
father of Jesus comes
from
Scripture and that has seemed too
little for those who made
up
legends about hrm.
We know he was a carpenter, a working man, for the skeptical Nazarenes ask about Jesus, "ls this not the carpenter's son?" (Matthew 13:55).
Despite his humble work and means, Joseph came from a royal lineage, lndeed the angel who first tells Joseph about Jesus greets him as "son of David,' a royal title used also for Jesus. We know Joseph was a compassionate, caring man when took Mary as his wife. We know Joseph loved Jesus. His one concern was for the safety of this child entrusted to him. Not only did he leave his home to protect Jesus, but upon his return from Egypt settled in the obscure town of Nazareth out of fear for his life. We also know that Joseph treated Jesus as his own son for over and over the people of Nazareth say of Jesus, "ls this not the son of Joseph?" (Luke 4:22\ PASTORAL TEAM Rev. Khanh Pham-Nguyen Rev. Continuing with
Saint
Augustine's homlly, he says: "Jesus asks her for a drink. He is in need as One Who will accept, He abounds, as One Who will satisfy. Jesus said, 'lf you knew the gift of God.' God's gift is the Holy Spirit but He still speaks to
her in a veiled language,
and
gradually He enters into her heart.
The water in which He was about to give to her is surely the water referred to in the words, 'With You is the
fountain of life.' Jesus was promising her plentiful nourishment and the abundant fullness of the Holy Spirit. The woman said to Him, 'Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.' Need drove her to this labor, while her frailty
recoiled from it. How wonderful if she heard the invitation, 'Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.' That was what Jesus' words to her meant an end to her labor; but she did not yet understand their meaning."
Jesus tells her: "The hour is coming, aird is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth." The Catechism explains that worship in Spirit and truth of the New Covenant is not tied exclusively to any one place. What matters above all is that, when the faithful
assemble in the same place, they are the living stones gathered to be built into a spiritual house. For the Body of the risen Christ is the spiritual temple from which the source of living water springs forth: incorporated into Christ by the Holy Spirit, we are the temple of the living God (ct. CCC 1179). Jesus was not in any way suggesting that Christian worship should have no use of external signs towards God, for that would take away all sacrifice, sacraments and
READINGS
First Reading - Exodus 17:*7 Moses brought his people out of Egyptian bondage, but they found themselves in a dry, waterless land. They turned on Moses, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to kill us . . . with thirst?" Moses cried, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me?" God gave Moses assurances of his presence rri,ith the people and they'were lead on their way.
Second Reading
-
Romans 5:1-2, 5-8
Paul writes eloquently cf the grace that came from God through Christ. There is peace that comes from being justified by faith, and this grace is a cause of rejoicing. There is also strong hope for the future. Why'? While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Gospel - ]ohn 4:542 or 4:5-15, 19b-26,39a,4042
To speak of "living" water seems strange. But it is a phenomenon that a person has to experience to truly understand it. Water is critical to our physical wellbeing, of course, and the 'oliving" water we find in Christ is a transcendent experience we find by faith.
prayers.
The Samaritan woman tells Jesus: "l know that the Messiah is coming, the One called the Christ; when He comes, He will tell us everything." Even the Samaritans, at that time, expected the coming of the Messiah. Jesus said to her, "l am He," which He proclaimed to the Samaritan woman, first by His words, but perhaps even more by His grace, which would have convinced her heart that He was indeed the Messiah. The disciples were amazed that He was talking to her and experiencing this may have taught them something about the humility of Jesus. The Samaritans looked for the Messiah because they had the books of Moses, in which Jacob foretold of the world's Redeemer: "The scepter shall not depart frorn Judah or a ruler from his thigh, till He that is to be sent comes" (Genesrs 49:1a).

We have a vibrant Young Adult Ministry in Saints Peter and Paul Church. ln February 26,2017 the Young Adults Ministry did blanket distribution at Kaka'ako Park. While it was a fun activity for the young adults, the people who received the blankets were blessed by the thoughts and the generosity of all those who donated the blankets. We thank you for your continued support. They also volunteered to help clean the church last Saturday morning, as they will continue to do so every second Saturday of each month.
There will be no more Sunday evening meetings for the next couple of weeks. Rather, on Friday March 17th at 6:00 pm, the Young Adult Ministry will be leading the Stations of the Cross, under the special theme of Human Trafficking.
On the last Sunday March 26th, they will be volunteering with the Aquarium again, this time to help get rid of invasive algae. ln the meantime, the Young Adult Ministry want to start offering free tutoring to help those who would like help with school subjects up to GED, or even just with Engtish. lf you know anyone who would be interested in participating, please let them know. What is Sin? "Sin is an act conkary to reason. It wounds man's nature and injures human solidarity" (Catechism o1'the Catholic Church, I872) Mortalvs. Venial What constitutes "mortal sin"? ooFor a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: "Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with fuli knowledge and deliberate consent" (Catechism, I 857). The Catechism continues ( I {l5U): o'Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young rnan: 'Do not kill; do not commit adultery; dc not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.' The gravity of sins is more or less great: Murder is gmver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: Violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger." In addition, "Mortal sin requires full knowledge and complete consent. It presupposes knowledge ofthe sinful character ofthe act, of its opposition to God's law. It also implies a consent sufficiently

Sometimes a priest at Mass skips (or forgets) the blessing after t}lre Confiteor: "May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life." I learned this prayer is important because it prepares us to receive the Eucharist. Is that correct? he penitential act at Mass concludes with the priest's absolution, but it "lacks the efficacy of the Sacrament of Penance" (GIRM 51).In The Tridentine Missal, the Confiteor was followed by a version of the formula in use today and a second formula: "May the almighty and merciful Lord grant us pardon, absolution, and remission of all our sins." This second, quasi-
absolution is omitted in the current rite, along with the sign ofthe cross that accompanied it. Jesus told Simon and his companions to lower their nets after they had caught nothing. When their boats began to sink with so many fish, Simon fell at fesus' knees and said, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man" (Luke 5:8). Often, when entering God's presence, we are so filled with awe that we become aware of our own sinfulness. Yet our primary purpose in gathering for worship is not to acknowledge our sins but to acknowledge God's mercy. Thus, the penitential act exists to unite the faithful as a community and to prepare them to listen to God's word and to celebrate the Eucharist (GIRM 46). Fr.
